Troubleshooting broken S6 Active - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all so I'm having trouble with the SM-G890A Galaxy S6 Active. One day the phone just kept going into a restart loop, so I took it into the T-mobile store to see what they could do to fix it as they are my current phone service provider. NOTE: The phone is originally from AT&T. They went through all the different combinations of Power + Volume Up/Down + Home buttons and could not fix the phone. Eventually after messing with it more, they stumbled on the "No command" dead android screen, at that point I just got a new phone. I took the S6 home for further trouble shooting, and was able to use Odin to flash the original firmware successfully.
However, now the phone now get stuck on "Installing update" screen (I've tried leaving it on this screen for 72 hours and it did not complete) when trying to restart the phone.
After trying going into recovery mode, the phone just restarts before I can select any options. I've tried scrolling down to factory reset, but before I can confirm pressing the power button, the phone freezes and restarts.
I've also tried letting the battery die out, and starting over, however, I'm unable to even get the battery charging screen to come up after the phone dies. The phone now always has a white/pink LED on whether the phone is plugged in or not.
I'm not sure where to go from here to fix the phone, any suggestions are greatly appreciated!
PM me for a link to an image of the recovery mode screen as I cannot yet post image links on the forums.

Hi , you can try the following steps :
- First let the battery to discharge out completely 0% if it stays on led light let him like that for 2 days to discharge the battery.
- After that put your phone to Original charger for 3 - 4 hours to be charged.
-Once your phone is charged go to the next step.
- Download this firmware :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0By7ytf2nnXE8RGREVV9VRGxjNzQ/view
- Once you download extract on Desktop with 7-Zip and put each file to odin one by one (see short video) :
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5iuIvmgitAFZFlhU3dqSTdRNm8/view
- Try to put your device into Download mode , VOl - + Home + Power button ....
Good luck

Hey Teddy, Thank you for the info. I've tried letting the battery die out and re-flashing with a G890A_G890AUCS7DRA2_ATT_USA_v7.0.1 folder found elsewhere. I'll try letting the battery die out again and re-flashing with the source you provided. Cheers.

Hey Teddy, small update, the ZIP file you linked me for the firmware is password protected, would you happen to know the password to unzip the folder?

Hi , try this password: [email protected] or just thonguyen.info .

Phone messed up?

Try this I did and it worked to get mine booting after a bad update.
I messed around with it using several methods of getting it to boot into download mode until I finally got it to do it. I think I left it plugged into the USB, powered it down until I saw the charging screen, then I proceeded to play with the different ways to hold the buttons to get it to download mode. If you are persistent enough and read a little on booting methods to get bricked phone into download mode you will succed if not then your not for the world of trial and error... the main thing is do the first steps I said before until it works
1. Get into Download Mode (WITH THE PHONE PLUGGED IN) by following the steps below
*Turn off the phone until you get to the charging battery screen (keep in mind, your phone is currently PLUGGED IN)
*Press volume up and down, and power all at once.
*As soon as the screen turns black, release your power button.
2. Unplug phone from USB
or try
2. Remove everything from your phone (SD card, sim, battery).
3. Plug your phone into your computer WITHOUT the battery, as you have already taken it out in the last step.
4. Press and HOLD vol. up and vol. down.
5. As you are HOLDING these buttons, reattach your battery.
6. You should be in Download Mode.
7. Unplug phone from USB
any how try try try until it works
Once in download mode
Get your files together for your phone, and use Odin 1.85.
Plug into Odin and make sure it shows yellow and its added!
1. Now if your files have like 3 files and the exact .pit file for your phone
I found mine here
http://www.droidevelopers.com/showthread.php?11722-Download-OPS-amp-PIT-files
2. Click the PIT button and browse to your exact .pit file for your phone *It should now have added a check in the re-partition box under the options area of the Odin window. If not CHECK IT!
***If you don't have your .pit don't worry about this unless you suspect, or have a bad partition
3. If you have just 1 file just click the PDA button and load the file. If you have 3 then you will load the PDA file in PDA, the Modem file into PHONE, and the CSC file into CSC, there are way too many phones to link all the files so get you stuff together!
4. Now hit start.
5. When done and the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever... immediately unplug the battery from the phone to shut it down.
6. Now put it back in and start it in Upload mode by pressing Vol Up, Home at the same time then the Power button.
7. As soon as the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever let go of all buttons and using the Vol Up down Choose the Clear Cache option and go through and make sure you factory reset it if you can just for good measure.
8. Reboot
9. Now when the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever take out battery again to power off
10. Now put it back in and start it in Download mode by pressing Vol Down, Home at the same time then the Power button.
11. Once in download mode Hook up to Odin again and flash it with a root kernel for your phone. Do not ask me just find it. I did it took time but I got all the files together over several days of reading and collecting the correct ones.
12. When done and the phone shows the first sign of starting up IE Logo or whatever... immediately unplug the battery from the phone to shut it down.
13. Now put it back in and start it in Upload mode by pressing Vol Up, Home at the same time then the Power button.
14. In most roots you will now have a advanced or mounting options and more options to use.
15. I cleared the Cache again, Cleared the Davilik Cache, Went into a option and actually mounted the cache formatted the Cache.
16. Use the option now to restart the phone...
And mine started up installed the apps and I am up and running, nice and smooth and no issues so far
I hope this helps out someone whos just about to go off the deep end, as I was there and patience and trial and error came up with this step by step way to recover mine. Thank me by hitting the little thumbs up THANKS button below this post.
And if your so happy your phone is up show your appreciation by buying me a Pepsi

[Q] GSII won't turn on

Hi. for the longest time i've been running Cyanogen 10.1 on my device. Recently I've updated to 10.2. IN the instructions, it just said flash the new zip and the gapps then reboot. I did just that and my phone initially loaded well. it was able to update and such. However, I noticed that after booting, it would hang at the lockscreen for 2-3 seconds then reboot. To end the loop, i tried pulling out the battery. I then tried turning it on but it would only stop at the sII splash screen. I then pulled out the battery again. When plugged in, it would go to the battery charging screen but would hang after awhile so i pulled the batt once again. Now, even plugged, the battery screen won't load anymore. the screen would just open w/ a battery and hang there, then the screen would close and repeat. I tried entering download mode by the button-combo or the USB jig but still none. can anyone help me?
No download mode = not good. Try searching through king_rat (xda user) posts for his method to jump start into download mode.
You can also try:
1. Pull the battery, leave it out for a minute.
2. Replace the battery, but don't turn it on.
3. Hold the button combo for DL mode.
4. Get a friend to plug in the phone charger.
On a working phone, the above procedure would boot into DL mode.
Sent from a galaxy far, far away
flashing a zip wont make ur phone dead... u should try another battery and make sure the combo u are trying to enter download mode is correct
usb jig i guess doesnt works wid jb or later (due to bootloader updates bt i may b wrong so plz pardon)

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 Bricked!!! (Help please)

Hello to all,I am in a serious trouble with my samsung galaxy player 5.0 International China version . I rooted this with super one click. And it was successful and there was no problem. But as soon as I overwrote a file in lib folder of system,it got stuck.I tapped the power key and the screens light was gone.I again tapped but there was no response. So I held the power key for a while and the device restarted. But it got stuck on samsung logo and began to restart again and again. So I took it to download mode and tried to nand erase with odin,I thought it could format the device and my device would be fixed. But it took some time and I closed odin. Then I held the power key and it restarted with a black screen containing a picture of malfunctioning connection between a phone and computer at its middle. Then I again tried to t-flash it and again closed it without completion because my notebook had no charge. After that I flashed my device with the YP-G70-Kernel-r14 and it restarted with download mode. But if I hold the power key for a while it restart and again go to the brick showing screen(I heard that this brick is called soft brick).I downloaded two stock rom STOCK_G70XXKPH_G70XXKPH_XEF and G70XXKPL_G70XXKPL_XEF.I tried to flash them in my device with odin and they succeeded. But none of them could fix my problem. They remain in download mode and if I hold the power key the device again go to the soft bricked screen. My device isn't force shutting down.If I hold the power key the screen goes and again lights up with the bricked screen. Now,my device has become very hot and after 8-9 hours it has automatically turned off.But if I connect it to the charger it again lighten up with bricked screen.
Now,I am wanting to setup a clean and clear version of android 2.2/2.3.6 in my device. Is it possible? Will this fix my problem? If it does then please explain me the steps.Or if there is any other way to fix then please help me.
N.B. I am junior about andorid root, rom etc.It is the first device I rooted successfully.
Sorry for my bad and wrong English.
Please, help.I am in a bad danger.

I don't have a samsung device myself but if you can get in download mode and you can from what you described. What happened is that you deleted a driver (from the lib folder) that was necessary for boot (something important). To get to stock go here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192488 download the right Firmware for your device. And the right pit file (pit file is the partition layout of the device). Flash using the pit file you got. You will fix that. Good luck.

So,I am in the download mode.I downloaded the firmware (XXXKPL) and the intl pit file. Now what options would be checked in odin and where will I put the firmware file(PDA or Bootloader)? The device has no charge. If I connect to the charger,it wakes up and becomes very hot than normal. And I can't turn it off.Its battery is non-removable.Thank you for your valuable help.

[GUIDE] UNBRICK TAB 3 10.1 P52xx (soft-bricken)

Greetings Guys, so after I brick my device a lot of times and i notice there is a limited guide for beginners on p52xx series. So I wrote this guide to share my experience with you guys the different types of brick i have encountered. Please correct me if i am wrong on something.
scenarios:
1) you flash something wrong, got into boot loop and you are able to get into recovery or download more. Please proceed to Odin or Recovery tutorial below, Section A Option A
2) Your device went dark after you flash something wrong, cannot boot up or you drain your battery during or right after you mod your device and it wont charge up. Please proceed to Section A Option B
3) You did nothing but drain your battery and it won't charge up after 0% and shutdown. Please proceed to section A option A *THIS IS NOT BRICKED SITUATION*
Section A: How to boot it up....
There is few options you can do,
Option A: If you didn't mess your boot partition up. you can leave it drain for like hours to days *I have tried to leave it for 7 to 9 days... and charge it again, keep charging about 30 minute to an hour when you see charging sign, then proceed to Section B if you brick your device. If you don't, just start it up normally and let it charge up to 100% before you discharge.
>Drain the battery by leaving it uncharged for days
>Charge it on, you will see charging sign
>Leave it charge for hours
>you can boot up into normal or follow the tutorial below for flashing firmwares.
Option B: If you mess with your boot partition and cause it, better follow @r2d23cpo 's suggestion.
So here is some tip.
When the device failed boot.img and goes into black screen it can make you think it is broken. But In fact it is in boot "Limbo". So because there is no feedback on the screen (image) You never know where the TAB 3 is with reference of Power OFF, Charging, Download mode Boot mode or Recovery mode.
You will be save if you can get away of the corrupt boot. Then get into download mode and use Odin or get into recovery and use a good update.zip or backup.
So our BEST tool is the Three button Start Sequence to get away from the Boot bad image. The truth is that our TAB does not requires the Home Button to be Press. SO we only use Power.,Vol- and/or Vol+.
Here is the Basic.
Get a Clock that shows seconds.
Disconnect USB Cable from TAB. Tab should have at least little battery power. Why, to ensure you get in Power Off Mode and not unknown charging mode.
* Pressing Power Button for 6 consecutive seconds should reset and bring TAB 3 to Power Off Mode. Pressing Longer can actually confuse the device, because it may go in to Boot again or just Get another reset and loop back. So the secret is to Hold Comfortable & Firm you Tab in you hand to ensure you PRESS continuously but only the required time.. Then Press Firm ONLY the Power Button lets say 7 Seconds NOT MORE then release. You do not Know but know you should be in POWER OFF.
* Now Lets go to Download Mode. For That we need only POWER + Vol- ( Vol- is the Closest to Power). Remember to Hold firm your TAB and buttons. A bad contact will interrupt the process. DO not Press TO HARD, you could damage your buttons. But Here is a tip. You want to ensure that your TAB know you Press the Vol-. For this reason you are going to press Firm FIRST the [Vol-]. Now Keep pressing [Vol-] and press [POWER]. In 3 seconds you should see The Warning and the Triangle of Download Mode. if you get there the use Odin to revive your TAB. I am Attaching an Odin Boot file.
If it fails try again. Press [Power] for 7 seconds. Release. Wait 3 seconds. Press [Vol-] then [Power] for 2 seconds. Then while keeping [Vol-] down release [Power], no more than 3 seconds later ===> Download Mode. Now use Odin file
The same goes for Recovery. But in recovery is [Vol+]
Press [Power] for 7 second. Release. Wait 3 seconds. Press [Vol+]then [Power] for 2 seconds. Then while keeping [Vol+] down release [Power], no more than 3 seconds later ===> Recovery Mode., now use your backup or the update.zip I gave you.
Now let me explain.
* Press [Power] for 7 second. ==> This in fact after 6 seconds trigger Power Off Mode.
* Release. Wait 3 seconds. ==> This ensure that you guys do not trigger Power On or even a second time Power Off.
* Press [Vol+]then [Power] for 2 seconds. ==> Please note that we first press [Vol] so that there is no doubt that you want to Power on in a special mode. You press [Power] for 2 seconds only so that it Power On and in fact do not reach the 6 second for another power off!
* Then while keeping [Vol+] down release [Power] ==> You need to release [Power] so that you do not trigger another Power Off. But need to HOLD [Vol] for about 3 seconds so that it boots in Download or recovery Mode.
Please Note the dilemma. Keeping [Power] press more than necessary will result in a unknown state, depending only in how many the devices in fact triggered Power off and or power On!! That is why you need to observe the timing.

Option C: Also suggested by r2d23cpo, Charge your battery separately and see if it works. *I never try that before.* You can actually open up your tab 3 10.1, here is a video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80McioNw3Os
Section B: How to restore back to original firmware with kies or odin
But aware that p5220 p5210 or p5200 are having different firmware and you need to download. So do not completely follow the tutorial in the link below, please check your device model and download the right firmware then you can pretty much follow this tutorial by @Zachisimo:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2604681

Nice job.
But I have to raise My PERSONAL VIEW. I know many devices when "leave it drain for like hours to days" to see a device recovery itself works. This devices have a FACTORY image that gets to restore them-self when they see corruption. As an example I seen some PALM devices.
But in Samsung devices you only have one and only one boot.img!!! There is no Factory recovery waiting for you. So discharging the device for me IS NOT A VALID OPTION. Believe me. On top our Device may and most likely WILL NOT charge with a corrupted boot.img. So if you leave the device to discharge you will not be able to recharge the battery unless you open the device pull out the battery and charge it alone!!!. So beware. That is my personal opinion. The rest is fine. Good job.

thanks @r2d23cpo. There is many options that they can chose. I am going to flash stock firmware, i have no choice as my battery is 0% now, it do charge but weird that after i tried option b every time it boot up it will boot up into recovery, but i will shut down again as its 0% battery. It last a bit longer now somehow its 1~2%.
After i force shutdown and i finally stop the boot looping and what i am going to do is wait for it to charge till 60% maybe and flash it with stock firmware and charge it up to 100%. I have a feelings that i will spoil the battery like this. So i have planed to get a replacement.
just now i will get into recovery by pressing (vol - and power and home) it get into recovery. But now i can get into download mode. I am not going to risk now as its still low on battery.
I actually support your view as it is a risk, or we shall call it a gambling. So your option may be safer, however i have no choice but to bet it on my option as this is the 3rd time i did that.
Thanks for the mention! But honestly I got out of this tablet because there was really no development and it was just outright slow. But if anyone needs anything I still have it!

Samsung S+ only boots to 'Download Mode' - Any guidance?

Hello,
New to the forum and all of this, so please go easy on me.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S9+ (SM-G960F).
On Thursday evening, I went to the device and it was completely dead. It wouldn't turn on and I attempted to do power key/volume down and various other button combinations I found online that would normally boot the device. Obviously, I attempted to charge the phone, but the charging light did not come on yet the phone did warm up slightly as if it was charging. After leaving it plugged in for so long, a 'Downloading... Do Not Turn Target Off' screen appeared. It also states I can restart the phone by holding volume down/power button for seven seconds. However, when I do this the phone just goes dead and doesn't boot up. After plugging in the charger again trying various buttons, I eventually end up back at the same download screen.
I've read about recovery mode, safe mode etc but I am unable to access them using the instructions I've read.
Any help would be appreciated. Ideally I'd like to be able to access my photos/videos/messages on the device and be able to use it again.
