This shouldn't be in this section, it should be in the QnA section.

No. Look up titanium backup or SMS backup and restore on the market for options on backing them up in future.

I personally use Rom toolbox pro as it's like titanium but with more features and a little cheaper.

The Lite version will also work? I didn't find difference between Pro and Lite
I suppose that with ROM Toolbox I can also freeze the apps...
I don't see the hurt in removing apps from the ROM before installation.

Never used the lite version. Try it to see what you think, but for me, it's worth the cost of pro.

The lite version of Titanium Backup does not allow the automatic restore of multiple application (for each app you have to manually press the install button to proceed to the next) and does not allow to freeze applications. For the remainder is equal to the Pro version

Never used the lite version but it's free so try it and see. Like I said, the features in the pro version make it well worth the money in my humble but correct opinion.

[Q] What's the best back-up method?

I want to factory re-set my Z1 but don't want to lose the configuration of home pages, grouped apps etc. Before, I have restored and have had to spend days, getting the machine re-personalized. Is there a back-up/restore method that keeps all the settings and configurations?
Thanks
Sorry to bump but there must be a "big-brain" out there with an answer!

Titanium backup can restore everything, even homescreen icons (restore data for Xperia Home), but the full version is not free and it needs root.

Thanks for this, I am happy to pay but not to root. If I root, I lose SkyGo!

Yep, I've looked into this a few times but I always come up against folks who say that SkyGo can't be fooled and can spot all roots.

App: Sky Go - BSkyB - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bskyb.skygo
Method: Most likely detects root via native library (built with Android NDK). Unsure of exact method, but the Java portion of the app contains "VGDRM_STATUS_DEVICE_IS_ROOTED = -41942891", and based on the library name, it's a safe bet.
Working on a solution: RootCloak Plus (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49351848)

I just got an XT1775 from Amazon, unlocked, no ads version.
Is it possible to create a stock ROM ?
I would like to try to root, but would like to make a backup first before messing around with this.
Is backing up using TWRP before rooting the same as creating a stock rom?
Link not working

It is possible if you know what you are doing. You will want to back up first and do it the smart way with backing up your stock system image. Don't just back up like normal (Sytem, data, cache, boot.img partitions)in TWRP, but make sure to grab the system image too. I would back up all partitions that TWRP allowed you to in the stock OS.
If you do not, you will be in a situation like my self. I built RR for the XT1775 and flashed it but have no data now and no way to install apn. So, your normal course would be to restore back and start over. Well, all I backed up was system and not the system image. Big mistake. Learn from my mistakes...lol...
Anyways @superR makes a kitchen that is outstanding and might be able to help you with your stock rom build. I use it and recommend it highly.

Well to make this as simple as possible the system image backs up everything, like modem and other very important stuff that your phone needs to connect. This was all mentioned in the OP as well as any videos that I have on my YouTube channel. Especially on this device but for any device that you are flashing to for the first time you always make a system image backup (if available and on this device it was, but only on the initial backup). The only way to fix this now is to go back to stock with the links in the "general" and "question and answer" forums for this device.
