i wanted to buy my wife a new phone for Christmas but it is not available yet

I live in Toronto, Canada. I got my Honor 8x yesterday. Works perfectly with Bell. I placed an order two weeks ago on ebay. A seller is in Florida.
This phone was confirmed for the USA back on September 27. It's now more than 3 months later and NOTHING. I was going to buy this phone if it was released in the USA a few months ago but by the time it gets here it will be old technology. Add in the fact that the US government hates Huawei/Honor I doubt we will ever see it. And if we do, it certainly won't see any updates.

Huawei's Honor brand has always been budget priced and so it was always "old technology" one way or another. If you want new technology, you gotta buy a Galaxy Note or similar. Having said that, I think what used to be newest technology around 2015 is basically what most people still really need to get by today.
I was certainly really interested in seeing the release of Honor 8x in the USA because that's my go-to budget brand, but if it does not arrive here, we could still have some other choices. For example, Lenovo's Moto G7. Based on speculations it should arrive some time in March.

There is a version of this phone that you can purchase (I got mine on ebay, but also available on Amazon) that will work with certain U.S. carriers. At the least, is compatible with T-Mobile bands. I'm not sure about other carriers as I use Ting (which operates on T-Mobile network, and maybe AT&T but I'm not sure so don't quote me). Just make sure the model number is JSN-L23. And also double check your carriers frequency bands it uses and make sure they and the phones' are compatible. As I said, I use Ting which uses T-Mobiles network and I get full 4G LTE signal with 50+mb/s down consistently. The only downsides are, as of right now, it is only available in 4GB/64GB format and is only available in black & blue (no red which sucks cause is the best looking imo). And for some odd reason this model does NOT have dual band Wi-Fi so keep that in mind

So I bought the M5 10.8 LTE (CRM-AL09) 4GB / 64GB and I can tell you what I bought it for and used so far. Does that qualify to your question?
Short version: I use it as a cheap LTE connected laptop.
Long version:
The problem I was solving was the weird way USA T-Mobile charges for lines meant that in the family plan I pay for, 4 lines cost the same as 3 lines and so I was left with a T-Mobile phone line SIM in a dual-SIM phone doing nothing the vast majority of the time, as I have ATT line from work, so I was looking to move my T-Mobile SIM to something which could make a difference. Most laptops or tablets with LTE require a data SIM which costs something, a big phone can use a phone SIM which is cheaper or for me effectively free.
I already owned a Nexus 10 I used when home, I'd replaced its battery so it did a good job or being at home on strong Wifi (Nexus 10 Wifi is crap) and just watch videos or just use Chrome. So a high-res 10" Wifi was covered.
I already owned a Nexus 7 2013, I'd also replaced its battery, for pocket-size 7" size.
I already had a Lenovo Tab 4 8 Plus which was a 8" Wifi. So 8" Wifi was covered.
So I figured I'd go for a basically massively big phone so when not on Wifi I got a laptop type size device, without paying for a tablet data line.
That means for me its a laptop when on the move which is independently LTE connected. I have a 128GB SD card so its got lots of downloaded media.
Entertainment... Internet, YouTube, videos, ebooks, private mail.

Hi, I have 8.4" Mediapad and it's my main driver. I use it mainly for watching online videos, web browsing ect whilst on breaks at work. Also use it as phone. Best tech I've bought
It's my every day phone. I use it for everything...just wish it had an ear speaker. Great for videos and media. Call quality could be better but otherwise, a great device with 4G capabilities in the U.S. (STH-AL09.)
I bought a 7T Pro Mclaren 5G a while back off eBay, it was the T-Mobile 5G model and I live in Canada, so when I got it, I tried to unlock it and couldn't, after a long back and forth with the seller, I ended up finding out from T-Mobile that the phone was reported lost/stolen so I had to make an eBay claim, got my money back, and I was going to buy another one, but then I found the Nubia Red Magic 5G so I decided to wait it out until that released since on paper it has better specs for less, turns out it's an absolutely horrible phone and I'm sending it back because nothing works and you're locked out of changing anything.. but back on topic.
Once I get the refund from Nubia, I want to buy another OnePlus 7T Pro, I would prefer another Mclaren model and I like the way that one looks more, however, I'm even more confused now that I'm looking into root/roms for it.
Canada doesn't have 5G yet, so there's no reason to get a 5G phone other than future proofing, but honestly 4G has been fine and I have no issues, so not having 5G isn't a deal breaker, and I noticed on the normal 7T Pro forum here, there's lots of root and rom threads for the non Mclaren phone, but the confusing part now, is the Mclarens actually had like 5 different models that I know of, the HD1910 (china model). HD1911(india model). HD1913 (europe model), HD1920 (europe 5G), and HD1925 (t-mobile 5G).
From what I've gathered, the HD1920/1925 are "hotdogg", and the HD1910/1911/1913 are "hotdog" so I have a few questions, given that there's basically zero support for root/roms on hotdogg, I want to buy a hotdog variant, the non-5G model, but this forum doesn't say anything about the non-5G Mclaren model being included or not, so is the Mclaren HD1910/1913 model the same as the normal 7T Pro HD1910/1913?
I was looking up differences on the HD1910 vs HD1913 and the only thing I've found according to some other forums and sites is that the HD1910 is just cheaper with different firmware, but the global firmware can be flashed on the HD1910, essentially making an HD1913 for cheaper? There are two McLaren editions afaik. The T-Mobile branded one and the international one. There was a serious issue with updating OOS firmwares when unlocking the bootloader on the T-Mobile devices.

The HD1920 is the Internation 5G, and the HD1925 is the T-Mobile 5G, but there are also the three other non-5G models, the HD1910/1911/1913, and I'm looking at an HD1913, so that's the non-5G international model, I just don't know if having 12GB of RAM is going to cause issues if I try to root it using tools for the normal 8GB RAM HD1913 and same goes for standard 8GB RAM HD1913 specific roms, can they run on the 12GB RAM HD1913?
I'm just confused because the "Mclaren model" (hd1920/1925) has it's own forum on here, but everything there only mentions the 5G models, nothing about the non-5g Mclaren hd1910/1911/1913, and over here in the non-5G section for the hd1910/1911/1913, there's nothing about the non-5G Mclaren models, so is this phone just compatible with the normal hd1913 stuff because they're the same model number, or does having an extra 4GB of RAM actually make it different resulting in root tools and roms not working? I'm so many confused lol
From what i know is that the International NON 5G McLaren (HD1913, i own this model and i am in the Netherlands) can be seen as a normal Oneplus 7T Pro... Oneplus customer service confirmed this for me.
The OnePlus support page has a download section for roms for all of their devices, but McLaren was not present in this list. They confirmed that i can flash the 7T Pro firmware and the hardware should handle itself, and the extras like the boot animation and themes are stored somewhere within the hardware so you'll keep those as well.
In case of rooting, i think you can use the tools for it as most probably magisk is used and a patched boot img will be made and flashed from your existing firmware. However i have mayor trust issues so i did it myself, used fastboot and adb commands to pull the boot.img and patch it in magisk manager and flash it via fastboot. Just make sure after each OTA to use magisk manager and flash magisk to the inactive slot so you'll keep root after reboot.

I have the op 7tpro hd1910 non 5g and all custom ROMs from the 7tpro thread work on it. Some mods ex renovate ice work on the 5g models as of 3 days ago, but not all custom ROMs support 5g models

Okay awesome, this is exactly what I needed to know, I feel a lot more confident about buying the non-5G one now, thanks!
I'd rather wait out the whole situation about 5G and what it's dangers are for your health, as everyone is spitting out rumours about it (talking about the amount of radiation it sends out and that stuff, not the 5G causes corona bull****). Besides it will take some time for 5G coverage, just like it did with 4G so getting a device right with it in an area that is not covered yet is a bit waste of money... For me 4G is fast enough.

Tbh 5G is a standard that includes different frequencies. If any concern can even be valid, it is millimeter wave as the other frequencies are already deployed.
And even in this spectrum it isn't harmful at all. Keep in mind we absorb slight space radiation all the time. Keeping a high wattage (I'm talking about 50W+ radiation close to your reproduction organs will do harm but that's a whole other kind of scale).
It is unfortunate that people often try to pinpoint the first thing they hear like Corona caused by 5G. It is important to remember how everything works and what is plausible and what not
Perhaps 5G isn't that harmful, i still keep my caution as i haven't had the time to inform myself fully yet... Just viewing articles that come by during lunch hours.
My first thoughts from hearing the news about people setting cellphone towers on fire because of 5G causing Corona... Wich deactivated and damaged the tower and the use of emergency numbers... What an absolute ********.

Yeah I'm not after the 5G at all, 4G has been more than fast enough for what I use a phone for. Plus, Canada doesn't even have 5G yet, that's why I'm looking for a non-5G OnePlus 7T Pro Mclaren, no point paying more for the 5G model and lose some functionality to root/roms for a service that isn't even provided yet.
As for the whole 5G thing, I think the main concern behind it was people not understanding that 5G ranges from like 24MHz to 300MHz, and it's about the frequency. So a RADIOwave goes up to I think around 1GHz, and MICROwave frequency is like 1GHz to around 300GHz. and some microwaves operate at around 2.45GHz, so already your standard wifi router in your house is already spitting out microwaves from 2.4GHz to 60GHz depending on what model you have and what frequencies you're using, the difference is the wattage, a router is basically nothing in comparison to an actual microwave oven that cooks food, those can go up to 700w for a normal household model, even more for industrial models.
So basically, we're already exposed to microwaves everyday, the wattage is just so low that it doesn't cause us any hard, and even if it would over a long period of time, our immune systems can rebuild faster than the radiation can cause harm, same as getting x-rays at the dentist, harmful, but our bodies are stronger. It doesn't cause any concern at all. Now there's known information that the US Military uses 95GHz with a custom panel that's attached to Hummers for crowd control to break up riots. The difference is that people think that the 95GHz range the military uses which is proven to produce enough microwave non-ionizing radiation to make rioters bodies uncomfortable, they over heat and get sick from heat stroke with too much exposure causing them to stop rioting, it's not life threatening and tests have shown no signs of skin cancer as a result, but it's aggressive enough to work.
The issue though, is that when people see 5G going from 24GHz to 300GHz and the military uses 95GHz for crowd control, people think that if 5G uses those higher frequencies it's capable of, it's going to cook everyone like a legit microwave oven. The only difference here is that ONE of those Hummers produces up to 2.5MEGAWATTS for a 2 second burst at full power using two diesel engine generators. So far all of the 5G towers that are being burned down, they don't have a diesel power plant at every tower, and each tower drawing power loads like that would overload the entire grid. So from everything I found when I was looking into why people are burning down towers is they just don't understand how low the wattage is on a 5G tower and there's people hyping up these hummers saying that 5G will cause you to die and Covid-19 is just a government cover up and it's actually 5G and all this other nonsense, but in reality, 5G is completely safe, if someone DID hook one up to a 2.5Mw source.. we might be in trouble lol

There were studies in Germany about just cell phone towers in general, they did a test with like 1000 people in a 400m radius of cell phone towers and the people closer to the towers were 50% more likely to get cancer from testing, and 10% observed cancer right at the towers, but this is also over the span of a 10 year test. So, ALL cell phone towers cause cancer, it's just a matter of how close you live to one and how long you've lived there, and even then, you have a 90% chance of not getting cancer, so the risks are still low. Not comforting, but low enough that I wouldn't start losing sleep over.
Here in The Netherlands we don't have 5G either, but it is planned for this summer (which is cancelled this year). There are phones already out with the specs ready... And even if it was already supported, i am not willing to pay 10 to 20 euros a month more for the speed i am not gonna use.
But does Canada only have the 5G variant in the stores? Or is the phone not available at all?
As far as i knew the concern here was that it would cause cancer or certain health issues in the long term, as it would need more transmitters/towers to cover the area for certain frequencies. I never believed in the first place it would be extremely harmful. What i do know is the closer you live to one off the towers, the more chance you get of developing cancer and a few other things. Besides, i have a high end router in my bedroom and i am not dead yet.... Maybe i should move closer to a tower so it would go quicker....
Governments do stupid stuff... but i believe they would not allow a network to be installed that would be that dangerous, or keep installed if things do turn for the worse.
