On screen "Virtual" or "Soft Key" Home and Recent button not working - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

On screen "Virtual" or "Soft Key" Home and Recent button not working
I have context media 32inch wallboard that I've successfully unlocked and functioning more like a tablet. It's one of those informational screens you see in some doctors offices/exam rooms now. See thread https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/help/unlocking-32-inch-wallboard-outcome-t3936524 for details of the unit and steps taken to unlock.
The only headache now is the on screen Home button and Menu/App switch button doesn't function. They keys light up when pressed but nothing happens. I've tried serveral key remap programs, editing the keylayout .kl files in /system/usr/keylayout/ folder, but no success so far. (I've made backups of all these files of course.)
I do have a TWRP recovery, and I'm not opposed to flashing a new ROM, but I have not found one available, and I have alot of research to do, before trying to port one over myself.
I've also tried the methods linked below:
Enable soft keys: https://www.technologyhint.com/enable-soft-keys-android-phone/
Rerun Setup Wizard: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70343231&postcount=5
Any help or guidance is appreciated

Can you plz send me a link to the backup that you made as i have one also and tried to install a different rom and the screen is just black... but it will connect in loader mode on rkandroidtools 2.3.5...

Help! Stuck at Booting recovery kernel image! And NVflash doesn't work for me!

Hi all,
I am a total noob here and i will sincerely hope that you all give me some advice.
I decided to flash ClockworkMod v08 on my gtablet.
However during the flashing process, i think i screwed up somewhere.
I press the power button and +volume until i reached the unloading package symbol. Then i reached a sort of recovery screen with the bottom left saying installing updates.
I waited very long and being impatient i press the restart gtab on the recovery.
When i thought i had successfully installed ClockworkMod v08, I press power button and +volume button and i see the recovery button press and booting recovery kernel image on the 3 birds splash. It loaded for a long time.
I then press the power button and i on the power without the pressing the power and +volume button. I was able to get into the my usual stock gtablet and everythings works fine.
I then reset the gtablet to factory setting on the setting and when i reboot, i was stuck on the 3 birds splash saying booting kernel recovery image. Even when i press the power and +volume button i cannot boot into recovery.
I tried using NVflash but to no avail, my gtablet cannot go into apx and i cannot access my tab.
Please help me help help!
Go to the Viewsonic gTablet for Dummies site here http://viewsonic-gtablet-for-dummies.webs.com/ & folow the instructions.
Here are a couple links with information to help you get your G Tablet restored. The first link in the list is the same one aabbondanza provided. Start there.
If after trying the techniques documented at Viewsonic GTablet For Dummies you still can't get your G Tablet restored, then try following the guide in the second link. I wrote the guide to document the steps I went through to restore a G Tablet.

My guide contains some tips and links on APX Mode and NVFLASH.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help guys!
After i realised i pressed the wrong button (power + +vol buttons) instead of (power + -vol buttons), NVflash works for me.
However after doing the NVflash, my gtab cannot reboot as in i will need to reboot the gtab with NVflash.
I went to research on xda website and found similar problems.
I managed to solve this issue and will be willing to help out anyone who has this problem (gtab unable to reboot after NVflashing). Just PM me if needed.
Thanks!
VinMee,
I messed up the G tablet big time by flashing a ROM with a different bootloader. I spent many many hours researching posted solutions and trying them out. Towards the end of the process I too could only boot using nvflash. Almost decided to just live with it, but ended up getting that fixed too.
In an attempt to help others I posted the guide referenced previously to detail the restoration steps I used. As mentioned above, I do not need nvflash for booting anymore. When I completed the steps in the guide the limitation was fixed. However, I do not know the "hows" and "whys" behind the fix. For example which step or steps fixed it? Why does the problem occur? Is there a quicker solution if that is my only problem left?
I encourage you to post the fix that worked for you right in this post and include links and/or references to any other posts that helped. Making the information public and readily available is of greater value to someone trying to fix a problem than asking them to PM you and wait for a response. No matter how quickly you respond, it is not as quick as just having the information in the thread. A person could then PM you if they needed additional guidance.
Thanks,

I understand, djab67, and i had posted my solution that worked for me under your thread and i do not have any idea why it works for me but it's worth a try for people who are panicking out there.

LG Optimus M help

Some time ago I rooted my phone and deleted a bunch of metropcs related stuff. Since I was using the opera browser, like an idiot I deleted the default browser. As a result of that I had the android market/google play problem. I couldn't download anything because of that stupid error. I tried doing a hard reset (home key + vol. down key + power) and I partially succeeded. After choosing the language and what not I finished that set up and then I get an "the application setup wizard has stopped unexpectedly" error.

When I close that I get a screen that's completely black with top bar. None of the buttons are working, besides ringer volume up/down. And I can receive calls. When I press the lock key and then press it again, I'm able to unlock the screen.

That's about it. Any ideas on how to fix this?
Problem solved!

Under manuals and download, click on the software update tab. Download the usb driver and the support tool. Follow the rest of the steps.
Before installing the driver make sure that you uninstall any other driver that you tried to use. This is by far the easiest process and it takes less than 10 minutes. After everything is done, you'll end up with the stock version of Android 2.2.2

[Q] VivaX TPC-7151 factory reset and recovery help

Hey XDA, you did informed me and help me a lot when I would search for a solution and find it on your forums. But now I had to make account in order to find solution for particular one here (I suppose this is a correct topic, please move if I'm wrong):
I forgot to change a really bad pattern password back to regular slide lock, and I didn't know the combination. After trying few times most combinations that I ha din my head, it suddenly asked me a google account in order to unlock it. Well, I know it, I type it and as soon as I press "sign in", a message flashes that it is loading something (just for a split second) and..... nothing. Still there, at same lock screen. I tried those without @gmail.com and null password but nothing worked, none of combinations. I read somewhere that other solution is wipe data or factory reset. Well, I'm okay with that, but how do I enter recovery mode or boot menu where I can access that?? I don't have USB debugging on, I'm sure of that, and my tablet isn't rooted (it was rooted before, but it went on service once for data wiping and it came back un-rooted I suppose)
I don't have hard reset button, but I do have physical back button on side of tablet that I can click, but I never use it. I tried with holding power button and volume up. When it shows me that image of opened android with red triangle warning sign. I release power button and now I'm stuck with that image on my screen, not knowing what to do! I can press power + volume up again to turn off tablet. Power + volume down activates safe mode and turns on tablet, atleast I discovered that feature...
If you know how to get pass that lock screen that asks for google account, anything how to wipe data with locked out tablet I would be very pleased to hear it (technically see it on here). My tablet is still in its case, locked out, and turned off for now.
Note: If I manage to get to pattern lock screen again somehow, that will also work for me. I'm sure I know correct pattern.

How to make a screenshot

I read somewhere you can make a screenshot bij clicking volume down + power. This doesn't work on my phone (maybe I disabled it while trying to root it, in which I succeeded in a way I can not reproduce).
Anyway, I searched this forum, didn't find a solution, stumbled upon a setting that does work for me:
Settings - Smart Assistant - System motion. Enable "Three fingers screenshot"
You have to hold Volume down + Power, not just click them. It has worked for me for all the custom roms I tried here.
Thanks, I know, holding it a few seconds should do the trick. Not for me.
Installing Win 10 USB-drivers, flashing TWRK-recovery and SuperSU should be a piece of cake too. SuperSu kept telling me the binaries were not properly installed. Flashing the Darksense-rom wasn't a succes either, apart from getting SuperSu installed in some miraculous way.
And on top of that I can make 3-finger screenshots now
Why is it so hard to find correct information on this? Several options haven't worked including holding down volume down + power button. Also, there is no "Smart assistant" in my "Settings" folder.

I'm on Eragon v4.8 rom now. That includes 'System motion' at the settings-tab - Enable "Three fingers screenshot" ...

noooob with nabi2 screwed it up...

hi I hope this is posted correctly... I have a nabi 2 running kitkat that was rooted with kingo root and no twrp, everything stock besides that... I deleted something I shouldn't have and when I restarted the tablet it booted fine until it got to the home screen. as of now I have no lock screen to swipe and no home screen. The home button and back button still show and also make a click noise. so I figure to do a factory reboot and everything would be fine... well I was wrong... it still boots but still no home screen.... at times the background will flash and the time and battery will pop up.
So I downloaded nabilabs thinking that would be able to help me and I believe it will but as I found out when I did a factory reset it turned off usb debugging and will not connect now. so with out screen controls how do I turn usb debugging mode on? is there a line I can send to it to connect? thanks for the help in advanced..
I did search around and found a bunch of great software and roms for it but I really haven't found a similar issue or realized that I found something close to my issue.
Do you have a photo? That would make it easier to know what you’re describing
Your firmware may be corrupted.
I put the link to a new ROM here. If you click click the hyperlink it will be at the top of the screen. Use Fastboot to flash that.
Put Fastboot Protocol on by holding down both the volume buttons and the power button, then when the letters on the top left (held in landscape) of the screen pop up, click the volume - (down) button and then click the volume + (up) button. Your computer will now recognize the device in Fastboot. Then you can flash the ROM.
See if that helps.
