On a bright day, my screen isn't visible outdoors - Sony Xperia 1 Questions & Answers

Has anyone else had problems with the screen outdoors on a bright day and/or found any setting tweaks to make the outdoor screen visible?

Do you have automatic mode activated?

Yes it's on

My screen is visible even on a bright day.
I guess your setting is wrong or your device is defective.

I have put on a cheap screen protector, and during bright days, it is not the screen problem but the reflection from the screen protector.
Once i removed the screen protector(or get a very good screen protector), the display works perfectly!

I've no problem with brightness even in harsh California summer. Screen has good visibility when auto brightness cranks it to max brighteness outdoors. It's not as bright as my Galaxy S8 AMOLED panel though.

Put automatic brightness

Can I make the Screen Brighter? I have root!

Comparing my G5 with my brothers Samsung J5 at the weekend and I was disappointed with my screen brightness. It was noticeably dimmer and harder to read in the bright sunlight.
Can this be improved?
Any information would be helpful. That's my biggest gripe with this phone

Have the same problem and dont found any answer yet.
Have you thought it might be a problem with the hardware in your phone? There is no other phone that beats the sunlight readability than my G5, Amoled screens are awful to read in sunlight and other lcd screens even worse. The G5 in sunlight is perfectly readable in full summer sun at 75 % on mine.

Sunlight legibility on this is very very good....but it must be on AUTO brightness control. If you move into bright sunlight you can see the phone brightness jump into boost mode (Like latest gen samsung phones) and it is super readable in direct bright sunlight... As bright as my s7 edge in daylight (and it is BRIGHT). Had a nexus 6P and loved it, but its AMOLED panel was utter pants in bright daylight...lucky if it hit 350 nits. The G5 (and the S7 edge) have very good daylight screens. Recommended outdoor viewing phone.
I think that the software is still a bit buggy with this feature. It works, then it doesn't. I wish I could manually enable it or at least set it to start even if the sunlight is not directly aimed at the sensor. But when it works, it is extremely bright.

But it works unreliably, I wish I could just set it to work manually, like a second slider over 100%

It doesn't make any sense.. 100% should have been the maximum. I guess LG didn't want people to use it often and drain the battery quickly.

My guess is that going over 100% it alters the colors to achieve visibility, otherwise it doesn't make any sense, I agree with you

Brightness outdoors and auto brightness?

How bright is outdoors and how good is auto brightness?
Max brightness outdoors and auto brightness was trash on OnePlus 6 (always too low) but it's been great in S8, Note 8, S9+, Note 9, etc.
anyone has the phone yet?
There's a review section that I'm sure will be full of information about this topic in due course. I'd keep an eye out there if not answered here. I'll likely be upgrading to this phone and may be able to answer for you shortly.

The screen is superb in all conditions. I think that's more impressive that note 9.

Amazing to hear that!
Does it have the outdoors mode that change contrast to improve visibility and cranks the brightness up to higher levels that can be achieved adjusting slider manually?
On the note 9 and other smartphoned that mode turns on automatically when you're under the sun. Oneplus 6 didn't have it and I hated so much

xperia 1 doesn't have super vivid mode

xperia 1 doesn't have super vivid mode is anyone interested in porting it or am i the only one who cares about this mode
Xperia 1 no need vive mode

The colors are washed out and dull, lacks some clarity and contrast. Most probably due to rendering in 1080p mode.
Hope they will bring back vivid mode.

I'd like vivid mode too
Can you change resolution to 4k at all times?
I am finding the screen to be difficult, if not impossible, to see outdoors on a very bright day.
I don't have any issues here, and I am in direct sunlight. Make sure you have auto brightness on... it hits a higher max when enabled from what I've read.
I dont have any issues like that but i am in creator mode

Xperia 1 display tech RGB/pentile

Guys is anyone aware of what type of display tech sony is using in the Xperia 1. They have traditionally always used RGB oled but given the rumours of Samsung supplying the display I have a doubt it may well be a pentile technology.
Do share your opinion. Thanks
Nop, display is rgb oled.

Wrap up: Pentile last longer, and use the fact the blue is not well perceived by the human eyes, so they reduces the number of blue subpixel. But even Samsung admitted RGB create a better image quality wise, sharper (Exemple provided in the link).
This display is a Sony Bravia oled pocket Spectacular.
I compared it to an S10+:and an iPhone xs Max and it's two levels above

Thanks to RGB the white color in Xperia 1 is really white and not yellowish like in shamesung.
Check comparisons of white Oled color over the Internet.

Well, yellowish if you're used to overly cold screen. Out the box S10 serie has a better white balance than the xperia 1. You need to tweak the red and green to at least +60 on the xperia to have a correct white balance.
+72 +68 +0 is good I think. That was tested on some labo on chinese review. A french one gave +102 +97 +0 but was a little too warm.
Well, for each their own, but out of the box sony was really blue, like a lot of other phone in fact.
Of course with time blue oled will wear out and screen will get warmer. But that the same for every oled pannel.
Most of LCD pannel are RGB and a lot have a bad white balance. Also Pentile is technically a kind of RGB, there are no white led, only red, green and blue.
The difference is in the shape of the subpixel, the pentile will induce some blur as a trade for a better life time.
This display It is addictive you do not stop looking at it

Pentile. Like most phones with OLED display nowadays.

It looks to me like a fine Samsung diamond pentile pannel. So we can say, because of pentile diamond, it's not real 4k and more blurry than a RGB 4k pannel. But sharper than 2k diamon pentile from other phones.
