[REVIEW] Explorer Edition glass back door | My custom blue global Explorer edition - Xiaomi Mi 9 Accessories

Update 20-08-2019:
I bought another version, also Aliexpress. It's different than the one I previous bought and I'm sure this is a real one:
Link: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33011854891.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.18294c4dPaGLbK
It's a bit more expensive than the other ones, you can easily spot them. The shape of the protection film is different (see images below). The differences I've found so far:
-It comes with much more protection film than the fake ones, the protection film is a different shape
-It includes the same barcode on the inside as the real ones (not present on the fake ones)
-The adhesive color is the same as the original one (light grey), on the fake ones the adhesive is black
-It includes adhesive for the camera
-It has a better fit
-It has a much better shine
-The adhesive sticks super good like the oem one.

================================================================================
Old info:
So I really like the Explorer edition, but I need band 20 so it was pretty much a no go. I went with the blue global version instead. I love the phone but I had constantly the feeling I was using my wife's phone (she has a blue Mi A2). Then I stumbled across original battery covers for sale on Aliexpress, including the Explorer edition:
It arrived very quick and it even included some tools like a suction cup. It also includes new tape (already applied) for super easy installation. As expected the fake PCB that normally sits underneath the glass on the Explorer Edition was not included. However I decided to show the true internals. With some heat and a small plastic card the rear was easily removed. There was hardly any glue residue and it was cleaned of easily:
The rear cover fits like a charm. It must a be an OEM part, it's just perfect. I love the look, but I assume you either love it or hate it. I think it suits the blue very well and I like the look of that QI coil
Update:
I'll probably remove the Explorer back and reinstall the stock blue one. The tape on the stock one is still strong so it should hold again, you might ask why:
-Dust is showing, this is probably due to the fact there is no sealing around the camera, the stock back has a tape around this area, the Aliexpress cover doesn't
-On some slight pressure on the edge the tape is already lifting. The stock tape is much stronger

That looks so nice. I'd make it but I won't give up warranty..

There is no trace of it, it's all glued. If I want warranty I'll put the blue cover on that I've also ordered from the same store ?

Wait so I can just buy this transparent back and I don't need any more tools?
I have a purple one. I kind of want to do this. But also am afraid. I put a metallic skin similar to the attached image on my back cover rn. I hope I can keep my current back intact and have a separate transparent one.

The only tools you need that i'snt supplied are a hairdryer or heatgun and a small plastic card:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8JSDC4_xfY
As you see removal is super easy. You probably even could reinstall your old back if you want. However this will depend on how neatly you will pull it of as you kinda distort the tape that's behind the cover on removal. I would suggest to buy both a Explorer back and your original color so you could always return to stock easily, yes this would mean you'll need another one of those brushed metal decals too.

Hair dryer and card. EZ, I'm ordering this.
I'm in USA so I can forget about warranty lol. I imported this one from AliExpress seller. I don't need my pink back back. I have it skinned anyway XD

Also I'm confused. In it first pic, is that the stock back? With a square if transparency? Or?
Did u do anything to make it completely clear (the end few pictures) cause I thought even transparent version has a gradient
Sent from my Xiaomi MI 9 using XDA Labs

The rear is full transparant with a smoked gradient. The blueish square in the picture is the foil / masking tape on the cover that is removed before install. Good luck!

I really like the look of the transparent back and I'm thinking of doing it, too. Thank you so much for sharing!
However I dropped my phone a week ago. I just sat on a chair and it slipped out of my sleeve (this one: amazon.de/Adore-June-Handyh%C3%BClle-Extrafach-Display-Reinigungseffekt-Schwarz-Grau/dp/B01M0QJP0Z/ref=sr_1_20?__mk_de_DE=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&keywords=adore+june&qid=1560587403&s=gateway&sr=8-20 but not sure if it was the version for the iPhone 7). :crying: I love these kind of sleeves as it cleans the screen and you have the naked phone in your hand while using it. The phone was in my sleeve in my pocket and slipped out of both. The sleeve even stayed in my pocket. Now it has minor to medium scratches on the metal frame :crying: (I guess I was lucky as nothing more happened).
I found a replacement part on eBay:
ebay.de/itm/100-Original-New-For-XiaoMi-MI-9-M9-Mi9-6-39-Front-Middle-Screen-Housing-Frame/183761129187?var=691361475323
And a video how do do it on youtube:
youtube.com/watch?v=V8m2JB7y4YU&t=328s
But I think you have to dig through the whole phone to replace it and I'm not sure if it's worth taking the risks. If I do replace this part I'll add the transparent back for sure.

Amazing. Already ordered. Thank you!

I did the same for my redmi note 5 pro.. I needed to strip down the whole device in order to place a new screen and touchpad. It was stressfull, but it all worked out really well. Never done that before

What adhesive did you used?
I want to use famous B-6000 or B-7000 but don't know if this is best choice for transparent one.

Adhesive is already applied to the cover (double sided tape) when you buy it.

I guess the simcard tray stays blue ? Is there one shipped with the glass ?

The sim tray should stay blue as the blue aluminum frame is unchanged

What kind of glue have you used? Can you share the link? Thank you

is it actual glass or just plastic?

It's the same cover as stock, so I'd say glsss

It's not the same as stock but it's glass (probably not gorilla).
I ordered 2, blue and transparent.
Blue is not even close to stock "ocean blue", just plain reflective blue without holo/rainbow effect. I know that on the real photo (store page) it was not looking like "ocean blue".
Transparent one and that dimmed effect is just a foil attached to the back side of the glass. So at least you can easily make fully transparent glass (removing dimming foil is easy).
Also brand in print is missing comma and dots, "Co Ltd" instead of "Co., Ltd." (transparent). In print is miss aligned, a little bit off horizontally (blue).
I'm not mad because I was expecting fakes for that price but still, calling it "original" is a little bit misleading.

Great eye for detail. I received the blue one earlier this week and indeed the holo effect is missing.
On the foil, thats typically how glass covers are colored, so that's nothing out of the ordinary.
On the brand print, my transparant one is printed "Co., Ltd." so it seems there are multiple versions floating around ?

[TUT] Xperia Mini - remove / replace Camera Glass + IGS file for CAD

This is just a little tutorial how to remove / replace the camera glass.
1 - First follow this steps (stop listen to page 3.3 "Disassembly"):
http://www.scribd.com/doc/87892838/Sony-Ericsson-Xperia-mini-ST15i-service-manual
2 - Now push the glass from the inside of the cover that you just removed. It will not take much effort, the glass is held in place by an adhesive ring.
(I took pictures of the steps ...)
Since I'm a CAD designer and I use CNC machines, I made from a sheet of 2mm thick plexiglass the replacement of the original glass full of condensation and scratches ...
(If you need send me an email, I'll see what I can do ...)
3 - Anyway, replace the cover, then reinsert the new glass.
The glass (plexiglass) I've done, is often little more than the original, so it is not necessary to use glues or adhesives to stop it. Just place it and close the external cover. Simple and functional.
Obviously necessary to consider that the plexiglass is not resistant such as glass, then the solution is temporary. However, once again scratched will just replace the glass with another one simply by removing the external cover.
That's all. I hope it was helpful!
(The last two photos are the tests "with" and "without" the glass (plexiglass)
The photos were only resized with photoshop.)
Remember that I am not responsible for damage that you can provide to your device.
Disassembling your smartphone void the warranty!

Why did you replaced the original glass? Don't you fear that the plexiglass is scratching much easier than mineral glass?
I'm asking because I have a strange spot in the middle of my Xperia Mini Camera glass - it looks like an antyglare film-cover of the camera glass is falling away from the glass. The glass itself doesn't seem to be affected(not scratched), but it looks with some pinky/lila spices seen while mirroring light at different angles. And in the middle of the glass this effect seems to dissappear by the probable lack of this cover - there is only the glass without colour in the mirrored light.
On the pictures the lack of this cover is seen when I take picture with a ligth coming in my direction - from a window or between the trees in the wood. So the picture looks very blurred. How can I find a new camera glass?

I did not understand, your problem is when you have the light against?
I can not tell if it's normal, but from a camera like ours you can not expect much more...
However I can tell you that I thoroughly searched the web but I have not found the original spare part.
The only option is the Sony service, but having the device with the bootloader unlocked, so...
Since I do not have the possibility of working with glass I had to choose the plexiglass.
I understand that it is not as strong as the glass, but I can assure you that it works very well.
I have ten.
I can send you one or two.
I just want a small donation to cover expenses.
Send me a PM or an email if you are interested.

Hey, I have the same problem with my Xperia Mini... I dropped the phone and the camera lens broke :crying:
I searched for the spare part but nothing... Do you have any lens left? If you have, are you able to send them to Greece, where I live?
Thanks in advance, it's my only hope to fix this phone as I don't want to send it to Sony service
I have a Nokia 3600 slide as a backup phone. The glass of my wt19 got blurry so I took the glass from the Nokia and adapted it to the sony. Working great so far.

Hi. Long time lurker, first time poster.
I have the same problem - the glass on my ST15i lens is damaged and all the images come out blurry and unfocused. So i wanted to ask - would the WT19i replacement glass fit on my xperia mini? Does the size match? It's quite expensive with postage, would not want to order it just for kicks.
tl;dr - would the WT19i glass fit on ST15i camera?
Thanks!
nice job
I will have a try if I get the parts

HTC Droid DNA Screen Replacement Repair Guide

In the repair guide we demonstrate how to safely tear down the HTC Droid DNA to perform repairs such as replacing a cracked or damaged Touch Screen Digitizer or LCD screen.
This guide will help you to install the following HTC Droid DNA parts:
HTC Droid DNA LCD + Touch Screen Digitizer Replacement
HTC Droid DNA LCD Screen
HTC Droid DNA Touch Screen Digitizer
Tools Required:
Small Phillips Screwdriver
T5 Torx Screwdriver
Adhesive Strips
Safe open Pry opening Tool
HTC Droid DNA Repair Guide:
It is very important that you make sure your device is powered off completely before performing this repair.
To start you will need to remove your simcard and simcard tray.
Next you will need to remove the back cover of the device using a safe open pry tool to release the clips holding it in place.
Now that the back cover is removed you will need to gently remove the black protective film covering the motherboard and internal components.
Next you will need to remove 13 small phillips screws as well as the 2 Torx T5 screws as detailed in the figure below.
After all the screws have been removed you will have a total of 5 antenna cables, 4 jaw-bone connectors, 2 pop connectors, and the battery cable to remove before you can proceed.
See figure below for screw locations and flex cable connections.
{

}
The next steps you will need to take your plastic pry tool to gently lift up the motherboard so you remove it completly. (be sure all flex cable connections have been release before attempting this)
In order to remove the upper circuit board you will need to release the front camera from the housing using your pry tool.
You will now need to remove the black film covering the power button flex ribbon so you can gently peel it away from the housing.
See figure below for reference.
Now you can gently insert your pry tool under the upper circuit board to remove it completely from the device (be cautious of the power button flex ribbon as you do not want to tear it)
You can then take your plastic pry tool and lift up the lower speaker assembly to remove it.
You will now need to take a pry tool(s) to lift up the battery from the inner housing. This battery is held down with strong adhesive so you will need to be extra cautious not to bend the battery when attempting to lift it away from the device. You may find inserting a second pry tool will give you an equal amount of leverage to prevent bending the battery.
Finally you will need to gently peel away the volume button assembly from the housing and slide its flex cable through the slot in the housing.
See the figure below for reference.
Now that all necessary components have been removed from the device you can begin the process to remove the LCD & digitizer assembly.
First you will need to use a heat gun or a blow dryer to heat up the adhesive holding the screen assembly in the frame and outer housing.
Using a setting of medium heat for roughly 30-45 second intervals just a few inches away from the device. Make sure to evenly distribute heat to the outer edges of the screen as well as the back of the housing. (Be cautious not to hover over any flex cables you do not want to damage.)
Once the adhesive has been warmed up enough you can now insert your safe open pry tool in between the seam of the housing and screen assembly to gently separate them.
Work your way around the housing by sliding your plastic pry tool along the outer edges to give you enough room to completely remove the screen from the device.
See the figure below for reference.
Notice: This repair guide is for learning purposes only and you should perform this repair at your own risk.

Some times we have found that if you can lay down a slightly wider piece of adhesive on the inner bezel then using a SHARP x-acto knife or razor blade you are able to cut along the edges of the bezel to lay the adhesive down. Take your time if you attempt this method and be careful not to slice your finger. Hope this helps!
Is it easy to sperate the lcd from the digitizer? I've heard it can be pretty difficult? what would you rate the hardness to replace a cracked screen? And Any recommendations for who to get fixed with?.. Thanks for the comprehensive guide

It's not impossible but it can be very difficult if you are not experienced and do not have the proper tools to perform the repair. We ALWAYS suggest using the LCD+Digitizer assembly for those who are trying to repair a damaged screen themselves. The screens are bonded together and trying to separate them could lead to LCD damage or a heap of nasty glue on the LCD. Use a complete screen assembly. It may be more expensive, but it will save you a lot of hassle and potentially extra repair costs.

I regularly use 3M 300LSE tape on iPod touches. They are these really thin strips placed out on a sheet. They are really strong and don't make a mess.
so..... I dropped my phone yesterday. glass is still fine, but lcd is bad(scrambled image)...
where's the cheapest place i can get a replacement lcd assembly from? as long as it's oem(doesn't have to have verizon logo)

It was none at all. But I pulled those reflective stickers off old one and it lights a little bit now. First two are lit pretty decent. But last icon not much at all. It was a one piece guide w three squares, one for each icon. But the third square ripped off of the strip so its independant now. Could this be why the third one isn't as bright ?

Baseus smart case: cheap S-view alternative

I have been waiting long time for a cheaper alternative, and today I found this case on Ebay.
So I just ordered it through free shipping, normally it takes 2 weeks to get free shipping stuff

Nice find! I wish they wouldn't have made the bottom part of the case a different shade/color.

Even though I agree with you, I still think it is kind of unique and the colors mix is nice.
Alright here we go.. I purchased this on the 21st and got it today which is not bad considering it came from China. I'm not that great writing a product review so I hope pictures speak louder than words.
I'll just describe the product instead of listing the pros. All around this case is pure plastic, I can't put my thumb on it but it is plastic and screen side (with the window) is flexible (just like the OEM). The window is not glass so it'll be prone to scratches and finger prints. Comparing to the OEM case I feel that the window quality is pretty sturdy because the plastic window doesn't feel cheap when I bend it, tap it, or flick on it. Continuing on the front side, there is a speaker hole so you can listen on to calls. There is a indented quote "design endows product a life" midway below the case. And at the bottom.. yes it a metal button just like the metal design/quality of the home button of the actual phone.
Moving to the side, just like the OEM, there's indented prints for the + and - volume keys. Nothing much else to look here.
On the back, the Baseus logo is indeed metal and has a nice feel when you smooth your finger over it. The camera and lens is kept protected with the case on so it's not protruding out.
Functionality of the S-View: the two metal pins on the back of the case is indeed for the control of the sleep and awake feature for the phone. So when I close/open the S-view, it will awake or sleep and will show the regular OEM functions (i.e. S-View slide to unlock, camera, action memo, and music player shows up).
Cons:
three things that bug me about this case. Metal button in the front (really?), as you can see in the photos the case does not fully close all the way (won't bother me as much because the sleep function will works), and since it's flexible plastic I feel that the flap (the side plastic) overtime will wear out and rip.. well that just normal wear and tear of products.
Overall I'm actually very satisfied with this product. I didn't want to purchase the OEM S-view case and sought better alternatives for the S-view cases. I found this and I'm truly again satisfied. Try it guys.. for $20 it's worth it. It comes in different colors (I didn't find full colors, only two-toned). Let me know if you guys are getting it!!
Sorry of the pictures are showing up side ways, I'm not sure why it is. (pictures taken with Note 2)
For a Chinese product it doesn't look bad. Please keep us updated on durability. If Spigen doesn't release theirs soon I might consider this one.

In your pictures it looks as though when laid on its back the front cover holds open slightly. Is the hinged portion of the case a soft material that possibly could break in over time?

Like I said in the description. The case opens out a little bit, but after a day use of it, the case gotten use to being closed completely in my pocket and now it's closed all the way now. And like I said before, I can't find the specific name for the quality, but it's flexible plastic and from what I'm seeing the cover inside material is fabric so I wouldn't think the hinge will rip that easily.

Good cover.
However on the front case there is not the hole for the home button. So the front case may not close properly.

What does that mean? Are you using a protruding home button sticker or something.
I have one of these too. I'm pleased with it, considering the price of it versus the S-view. I'm hoping over time the case will stay closed better.

Home button on ALL Samsung Galaxy models are protruding by default.
Bought one in White and Black. Really good cover. Does what the original cover does. The front of the cover does close properly for me and the home button doesn't cause the front to stay open. The only thing that was annoying me was the s view window has scratches on it already

New Zizo Bolt Holster/Kickstand Slim Armor Case

Just came across this new case while browsing Amazon to see if any new Idol 3 accessories have been produced. And to my luck there was. I was going to post this in the already created thread about posting which case you already own or want, but I feel creating a new thread informing those of new items would bring different cases/accessories more attention. Available in 10 color combinations and it includes a free tempered glass screen protector. No mention on the hardness scale of it however. Also includes a holster and kickstand. The case also has covers for the headphone jack and charging cable to prevent any dust getting in them. Anyways, here's the case:

Ordered the Red/Black combo near the end of the color selections (as they have 2 red/black cases). Hope the red is as dark as it is shown in the images.
I wish there was the same case for 4.7 but they're not going to produce it, only for 5.5

These cases seem to be newly released. Give it some time for a 4.7" version to be produced. You sound pretty confident though they won't ever release a 4.7 case. Do you know that for a fact?

They must think the 4.7 isn't as popular as the 5.5 but that's not true. I'm sure the userbase for 4.7 is just as strong as the 5.5 userbase. The phone being on Cricket shouldn't matter since the phone is available worldwide unlocked. The company must have some agreement with the carrier(s) they produce cases for that limits them.

Which color did you get? I got my case yesterday and it's great! I feel it's the best case out for the idol 3 in terms of design. I've tried a variety of cases and spent way too much money on the collection I have now because I couldn't find one I would want to use for a daily driver for long. But this case has everything. The built on dust plugs for the headphone jack and charging port is what makes it feel high end.
Good case, but...
I've had the case for a couple days now, I like the look and feel but the buttons don't go in all the way, at least not for my unit. Otherwise it would've been a fantastic case.

I'm currently rocking the black on black version of this thing and its doing the job but I would like dust plugs as my job can get quite dirty.

Nope I didn't end up with the button issues. The buttons are flush with the case so it is somewhat hard to press, but once you get used to the placement it'll be fine. It's not like you need to press with all your force to use a button. It's just like any standard case. Buy it and you'll see for yourself . I own the same black on black version of that case and it did a good job until I found this beauty of a case.

So I ordered the Zizo and the quality blows my old case out of the water. The buttons are actually more nice to press with the Zizo and I don't always accidentally change the volume accidentally while at work or working out.
The only thing I didn't like was the four fake screws they put in the back which serve no purpose other than I guess making your phone stable on flat surfaces. They make the phone super slippery when on its back though so I just popped them off pretty easily and tossed them.
Oh, and the case around the headphone jack is raised which will cause problems with larger aux cables for sure. This is a fairly common problem with a lot of cases I find though and I'll probably just cut the case away if I find it bothersome.
I have the all black and love the case! No button issues for me

Ok maybe I'm just missing the obvious but how do you get it back into it's "holster" after putting the case on it? I can see the clip should snap around it but I'm flexing it pretty hard and it's not sliding in....I don't think I should have to fight with it to get the phone to dock.

I know what you mean. I don't use the holster but for the hell of it tried putting it in the holster to see how it felt and it took a lot of pressure to get it on. On the left side of the case under the power button you'll see 2 black openings which are for the holster. I'd assume to make it easier you insert the left side of the case into the holster first and just pry the phone in completely on the right. Those 2 black openings are for the clips on the holster.

A lanyard strap that's included in the packaging. Never seen the point of keeping a phone on a lanyard so it's of no use for me. You get used to the design of it after a while.

It can also be used to attach a keychain...luckily still fits in the belt holsters I purchased sized to fit the iphone 6+. Tried the holster it comes with..still trying to get used it...easier to use if you remember to turn the screen to face INTO the holder instead of trying to mount it exposed which I was stupidly doing.
So you guys recommend the case? I just seen it the other day, ive been kinda on the fence about getting it since its more expensive and ive been through 3 other cases that ive hated, but i hate not having a case even more... I was wishing for a trident case but i doubt they will bother anymore, so this one looks like my only hope for decent drop protection.

[MOD] Clear Back Honor 8 [GUIDE][Hard MOD]

Warning: This MOD will void your warranty. You will have to open the device for performing this MOD. Only perform this MOD if you are willing to take a risk.
I took inspiration from Zack from JerryRigEverything to make a clear back MOD of our Honor 8.
It took me around and hour to do this. The only tool I used is a razor blade and scissors.

Guide:
(NOTE: I am not responsible for any damage you do to your own phone.
1. Slowly remove the rear glass by heating the glass with a heat gun and lifting it with a suction cup.
(You can find many guides on removal of back glass on YouTube.)
2. Remove the connection between fingerprint scanner and the motherboard.
3. Remove the leftover adhesive on the phone.
4. Stick transparent double sided tape around the phone. Make sure you don't cover the camera lens, flashlight and laser.
5. Clean the Glass:
-You can slowly scrape off the lamination by using your finger nails or with tip of the razor blade.
(I noticed that there is a heat shield that is present on the lamination, so by doing this MOD you will loose it.)
-If you use razor blade, the glass might get scratched easily.
-Before cleaning near the fingerprint scanner, remember the orientation of the scanner.
-Use transparent double sided tape to stick the FP sensor back into its original orientation.
-Clean the whole inside of the glass and get rid of fingerprints and stickiness.
6. Reconnect the FP sensor cable back to the motherboard.
7. Stick the glass back to the phone and apply pressure around the glass to make the glass stick firmly.
I am posting this after using the phone for 3 days and as there is no heat shield, there is not much heat on the glass.
This is so head turning that many were curious about this.

Ah, hello, fellow transparent Honor 8 user!
I just did a sin.
This sin. https://imgur.com/gallery/rD6Srsd
I put that on my phone.
But, other than that, I made my phone transparent last year, and have always been screwing around with it. Here's some advice from me:
The honor logo on the glass itself can come off. Just a *little* harder scratching and it'll come off.
The shielding on the motherboard PCB is detachable. It kinda clips in place, so it can be "pulled" off. It looks MUCH better with it removed.
In fact, a lot of things can come off and be fine. The flash diffuser can be replaced with Scotch tape, the fingerprint sensor and screen connector bracket can be removed, some metal can come off...
ok maybe I lost the flash diffuser and fingerprint connector and screen connector bracket but you get the idea.
You can put anything behind that wonderful glass. I used to have a piece of paper with my name on it, but I removed it. Now I put in, uh, an ahegao image, and it's secured nicely.
That's all I have to say. Good job on this, btw, yours looks nice and secured but my back glass keeps detaching from the adhesive, no matter how much I put on. Maybe it's because the plastic layer in between is stretched out and tries to force itself out of the phone...

Not that I know of. I've had my phone near microwaves and stuff without any issues. Most of the heat is generated on the other side of the PCB, with the SoC, but that heat gets dissipated through the aluminum frame of the phone with thermal pads. In fact, once I hit a capacitor with my pliers because there's additional metal under there that I tried to remove, and the tiny capacitor got ripped off, but my phone still works fine. No issues of any sort.

Woah, will remove those shields soon.
I'm thinking to stick a carbon fiber vinyl on the battery (just like mi 8 explorer edition), or anything cool.
Could you suggest some ?

ok maybe I lost the flash diffuser and fingerprint connector and screen connector bracket but you get the idea.

I did the same till recently got bored of it and bought a new blue glass cover, if you really wanna make sure the glass stays glued, you have to use transparent b7000 adhesive, and if you lost the plastic flash diffuser like me, with the glue, make a circle arround the flash, so dust dont come in to the camera and destroy it.
