Cell Signal: V20 vs V30 vs G7 ThinQ - LG V30 Questions & Answers

I currently have a LG V20. Where I work is probably 3 miles from a Verizon tower. We have very weak signal out here, and sometimes I can't even get texts for a while.
Which of these 3 phones have the best cell reception?

Depends on the Verizon bands available in your area!
If Verizon have band 46/66 support in the area, V30/G7 will be better. Otherwise they are probably gonna be all the same.

Yes. OR if Verizon soon adds support for these bands where you live
And that's because the V20 can NOT receive those bands but V30/G7 can.
Like back when AT&T started adding LTE band 5 all over the country as a supplemental band, in addition to 2, 4, 17 (now called 12). You needed a newer phone or you never saw LTE band 5... Was used in areas of congestion.
Since this is the V30 forum, my vote is on the V30 of course.

LTE Discovery app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.simplyadvanced.ltediscovery&hl=en_US
If you keep it on while you drive, it will keep a record of all bands you lock onto.
You can also use it while standing still to see what band is near where you are, of course.
CDMA SHUTDOWN
Also be aware that in six months (December 31, 2019) Verizon is dropping 3G CDMA -- so all you will have is 4G LTE. To make phone calls you will need either LTE VoLTE or Wi-Fi calling.

Somehow the ZTE Axon 7 (not even a Verizon device) has Verizon VoLTE on Lineage. (Or did a couple years ago. Have not checked recently.) It was a mystery the dev either could not explain or did not want to explain, at that time.

[Q] LG G3 au version - LG L24 on Verizon LTE Band 4

Dear, buddy:
Could I know if Verizon currently had deployed band 4 LTE already?
I am interested on the Japan version of LG G3 and it does not support BAND 13!

Well, Verizon started deploying their XLTE which uses the AWS spectrum since last year. Their latest article in September states they are in over 400 markets already. http://www.verizonwireless.com/news...ing-exalted-the-verizon-wireless-network.html. So it is pretty safe to say if you are in a big city, it is already deployed.
Thanks so much, but I am going to buy this phone, how we can confirm this?
As far as I know T-mobile also support band4 LTE, how did Verizon and T-mobile handle this?

My Verizon LG G3 gets LTE on band 4 from both Verizon and T-Mobile , depending on which sim is in. It also gets band 13 LTE when the Verizon sim is in.

Thanks, buddy, is that saying if I am using Verizon SIM card
I can use Band 4 LTE service at all states?
BTW, I am in NJ right now.
The Verizon sim means the Verizon G3 can access any available Verizon data connection anywhere. That G3 though does not support all the T-Mobile and ATT LTE bands, just some.

[Q] H830 usage on Verizon - LTE/build.prop help

Hello all,
I am having some difficulties getting my LG-H830 working on Verizon. The phone is carrier unlocked, stock rooted and BL unlocked. I've gone through the hidden menu and when I set LTE band to 2 or 4, it says SUCCESS. I've activated the SIM on another phone before moving over to the G5 and it shows up on my account.
I get bars but no LTE symbol, so I can't make calls via VoLTE (voice over LTE) and I don't have data. When I had it working on T-Mobile, there was an LTE symbol so I know it has LTE modem. I'm wondering if I need to modify build.prop to work on bands 2,4?
FYI on the lockscreen top left it says searching. A bit odd since I have four bars.
Any ideas? Appreciate any feedback!
I'm out of a phone until its working.
EDIT/UPDATE:
I'm trying to find the proper build.prop settings to get LTE working. Currently I am looking at my VZW LG G3 build.prop, however I've yet to change any settings that gets the LTE icon showing up. I've replaced the apns-conf.xml file from the G3 in order to have the proper APN configuration.
Things I'm trying (for the most part):
ro.build.target_operator=TMO (as VZW I do not get any service, with TMO it says Verizon Wireless and I get bars, but no LTE)
ro.telephony.default_network=10 (was 9)
telephony.lteOnCdmaDevice=1 (was commented out)
ro.cdma.home.operator.numeric=311480 (didn't exist)
ro.cdma.home.operator.alpha=Verizon (didn't exist)
gsm.sim.operator.alpha=Verizon (didn't exist)
gsm.sim.operator.numeric=311480 (didn't exist)
gsm.operator.alpha=Verizon (didn't exist)
gsm.operator.numeric=311480 (didn't exist)
persist.radio.volte.dan_support=true (didn't exist)
ro.afwdata.LGfeatureset=VZWBASE (was TMUSBASE)
persist.lg.data.fd=0 (was -1)
ro.com.google.clientidbase.ms=android-verizon (was android-hms-tmobile-us)
ro.com.google.clientidbase.am=android-verizon (was android-tmobile-us)
ro.com.google.clientidbase.yt=android-verizon (was android-om-lge)
I can also go into the hidden menu. Attached is what shows after selecting LTE only for the RAT.
NOTE:
Band4 confirmed in my area
A gsm phone won't work on Verizon because they are a cdma carrier you can only use it on carriers who use att or T-Mobile towers because they use gsm networks.

The LG-H830 supports LTE bands 2 and 4. It also supports VoLTE (Voice over LTE) and so does Verizon. I don't believe yet that it isn't going to work.
Have you confirmed the correct apn has been setup in settings - mobile networks? These aren't always set up automatically, and if it isn't set up right, you will have a regular phone connection but no data connection.

Copied directly from my VZW LG G3 (4G). It is actually showing the radio as connected to 4G, just no 4G icon, data or calling.

I'm aware that it doesn't support band 13, however in my area I've confirmed that band 4 is in production. My LG G3 is currently connected to band 4.
I've seen that thread before, I should probably add band 13. I don't think that is my issue at the moment though. It could be that Verizon requires a connection to CDMA before 4G use is allowed. I'm not entirely sure. Theoretically it should work..
This one is for the g4, might be more compatible with the g5. Maybe it's possible to unlock the cdma bands aswell.
Good luck and please report if you succeed

I tried to use my T-Mobile LG g5 on Sprint and it wouldn't work I asked both sprint and T-Mobile they both told me it wouldn't work because the network's were different. I would love to get band 17 working on mine so I can use that band on cricket because they have a cheap truly unlimited plan but I don't think it's possible is the only band the T-Mobile LG g5 doesn't have that att uses but if you or someone figures out how to do it would love to know about it!

band 17 is a "subset" of band 12. afaik.. the at&t g5 doesnt have B17 either.. just B12.
if you can get cricket month by month it might be worth testing it.. worst case you're out a months service price.

Yeah I'm gonna try it because I know it will work for the most part I may just not have 100% of the coverage for cricket but my parents have 4 lines on cricket so they have 1 extra line they aren't using so for the truly unlimited plan it would only be $30 for a month because the 5th line gets a $40 discount so definitely worth trying out like you said and T-Mobile has already unlocked my phone but I had to pay for one more month so I won't switch til August 3rd.

Band Selection

I have V30+ (H932 /T-mobile version) I already get T-mobile Permanent Unlocked on my device.
Just realized that the bands availability for this device is not as many as Samsung Note 8 (T-Mobile version).
eg. no LTE band 8. The spec stated it has
GSM 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
WCDMA B1/B2/B4/ B5;
LTE B2/B4/B5/B12/B46/B66/B71 (USA-Tmobile)
Roaming LTE B1/B3/B7/B20/B38/B39/B40/B41
I will use this phone in the country that need LTE band 8.
by reading this thread;
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/help/increasing-data-speeds-t-mobile-t3703325
It seems , I have found a way to get into engineering mode to get into band selection option and turned on the band I need.
but I have a doubt if this phone will be working especially LTE band 8 in my destination country where I have to Travel. (there is no LTE band 8 on LG V30+ t-mobile)
Can some one confirm and test to by switching SIM card, (must be temporary /permanent unlock), let say turn on band 17 from ATT since default T-mobile version is not available,
The area where I live T mobile and ATT use LTE band 4 so it is hard for me test myself with ATT SIM card if band 17 is working after I turned on that band.
Thank you

LTE band 17 is a subset of LTE band 12. All new AT&T phones now only list band 12, because it includes 17.

No. Because LTE band 12 is listed -- therefore no need to list LTE band 17.

IF you go to the AT&T website to BUY an LG V30 H931 from them, here are the bands they show you are on the their own phone. Slightly different order from the LG.com website -- but still NO band 17. No need to show LTE band 17, since LTE band 12 is there!

The V300 I received from HK didn't have the B20 LTE band on the spec sheet.
But when i enabled it in the engineering menu, it worked perfectly with European networks.
There are some apps that give you the ability to record the bands number you encounter and log them.

Read my reply again. 17 is subset of 12. Even new AT&T phones no longer show "17", since they will now show 12. If you have 12, then you have 17. New AT&T phones will no longer show separate 17.
Even the AT&T LG V30 doesn't show 17. Why? Because 17 is already IN 12. (Like sugar is in cookies.)

There is no reason not to believe your point, as I already said "good to know"
I don't need to argue about it .
In technical point ATT band 17 is already covered by band 12 (T-mobile) which 700Mhz ( a )
for some people they just read band 17 is band 17 not band 12. and obviously they are thinking it is different with limitation of technical knowledge.
I just pointed out the frequencycheck.com
https://www.frequencycheck.com/carriers/at-t-united-states
I guessed ATT can't just stated they are using band 12 which they don't have (extended range LTE 700Mhz a)

AT&T now calls it band 12 on their phones moving forward.
Older phones will still show "17".
That site you keep giving link to is not an AT&T website and you have no idea when it was even last updated. I'm not even going to bother going to that site because I know I'm right. I really don't care what they say. They haven't kept up with current development.
It's why the AT&T LG V30 H931 on the AT&T website doesn't have LTE band 17 listed, but has LTE band 12 in the specs instead.
There are apps like LTE Discovery that will show you what bands you are on, and even keep a log as you travel around.

On my US998, here's the bands I am getting as I travelled to work yesterday morning. I was getting LTE bands 2 and 12. As expected it's now LTE band 12, not "17" -- because AT&T doesn't call it Band 17 anymore (except older phones will still show that). All new AT&T phones or new phones compatible with AT&T (like the US9998) will show LTE band 12.
https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/47blo3/eli5_band_12_vs_band_17/
Band 12 consists of the frequencies 698-716 and 728-746. This band is the only band that covers the 700a block that T-Mobile uses, and also happens to cover the b-block and lower-c-block that AT&T uses.
AT&T is upgrading its network so that it can handle Band 12 phones, since Band 17 is a subset of Band 12. This means that people will be able to use T-Mobile phones on the AT&T network.
Additionally, AT&T's phones will begin coming with Band 12, which means they can be used on the T-Mobile network.

LS998 > US998 V30+ not working on Jio LTE in India :/

I'm a little confused as to why I am currently having this issue.
I'm on 20H US998 firmware currently in India and have unlocked band 40 using the T-Mobile hidden menu so theoretically I should be able to get full LTE coverage around India on this device but I am not able too.
My theory is that the US version of the V30 doesnt actually have the required firmware to operate on Jio with LTE at all.
I've verified this by flashing Lineage OS and getting the same issue.
SIM detected, jumps on network, no LTE = no VoLTE
Before you tell me I have the APN settings skewed im 99% sure I am right on that, however if anyone has any settings they would like me to try I would be happy too as currently I'm using my iPhone SE and I miss my 1440p OLED when I'm out and about

Jio VoLTE only works on two firmware -- ESA (India) H930DS and recent EU H930. I've only heard it working on H930DS phone, while using one of those two firmwares.
Just because you "unlocked" a band in hidden menu doesn't mean it's actually working. Same with unlocking the T-Mobile LTE band 71 on rooted US998.

So what should I do? Is there anyway to get a regular LTE **data** connection, or am I stuck with the iPhone?

Jio uses LTE bands 3, 5, 40. You're not going to get LTE band 40 on the US998, but you can get LTE bands 3 and 5. If you are in area where Jio has LTE bands 3 and 5, you should get a regular data connection. Do you live in an area where Jio uses only LTE band 40?

I don't think you understand. I'm able to get service where other devices I own are connecting to 3, and 5. However, the LTE icon never shows, preventing me from getting LTE connectivity altogether. I'm observing the same behaviour with my US SIM card which shows bars, but once more no LTE.

That sounds like an authorization issue, with Jio. Where you can see bars but not actually connect it's because the carrier is not letting you connect.

Maybe it’s my Sprint IMEI number??? Idk. I just tried to flash the H930 EU TWRP zip and restored my US998 modem, but SIM wasn’t detected. Maybe I need LGUP.

I was double check the APN, and contact Jio technical support. Maybe they need to do something on their end for your US998 to connect.

Jio technical support...that's kinda a joke tbh lol.
Assuming I find an agent who speaks English, what would I tell them?

Hope you get data working on LTE bands 3 and 5.

Do at&t customers need to flash back to h931 to get the right bands after us998 root?

1st, I'm trying to purchase a v30, but I'm not sure if the ls998 from sprint will work fine on att, what I've read seems to suggest that it is all the same hardware and will work fine unless it's taken to verizon.
2nd, I'm on att prepaid. Does that mean I need to flash back to h931 after rooting with us998 to get all the bands on att LTE?
If I don't flash back, what bands am I missing? 29 and 30? How detrimental is that to service? I travel my region a lot.

My wife, my, my sister, my brother in law, my mother, three other friends are all on AT&T and using US998 (either native or converted from LS998). None of us need AT&T LTE bands 29 and 30.
IF 29 and 30 are like LTE band 5, they are just supplemental to the workhorse LTE bands 2,4 12(17).
I doubt there's any places that have ONLY LTE band 29 or 30. (Unless someone can prove it to me.)
Even then if there is one or two places, you still have HSPA.
Don't obsess about AT&T LTE bands 29 and 30.
See here, other AT&T customers agree. Not important:
https://forums.att.com/t5/Network-Coverage/Importance-of-Band-30/td-p/5524401
This person below HATES AT&T LTE band 30 and will NOT but buy a phone which has it:
https://forums.androidcentral.com/t...and-30-going-push-me-into-having-leave-t.html
Does anyone at AT&T realize how terrible their service is since they implemented LTE band 30? I have been fighting this problem for a year now, the only way I found around it is to only use unlocked phones that do not have band 30.
I have tested this with multiple phones (6 different phones). What were they thinking when they added such a high frequency band and the worst part is once your phone latches onto band 30 it's like a dog with a bone, I get better signal strength inside a concrete and steel building on bands 5 and 2 the I do outside in a good signal area on band 30.
Now even newer unlock phones are coming with band 30 on them and they do the same thing. I'm going to try T-mobile on pre paid for a month, if that works then I'll leave AT&T after 16 years

Your posts are so informative! Thanks. Based on another post you made about aosp, I searched ebay for an ls998, us998, as998, or vs996 and picked an ls998 with some wear for less than 100 bucks. I'm think I'm going to be super happy thanks to everything I've learned from you over the last few days
