Xiaomi Mi9T/Redmi K20 Photo & Video Thread - Redmi K20 / Xiaomi Mi 9T Guides, News, & Discussio

Hello,
First of all, we glad that xiaomi produced this completed package phone with budget price.
Lets share our photos and videos experiences using this lovely device.
Currently the downside that I found in video is lack shooting 24fps video and Filmic Pro wont open.
Feel free to share your photos guys

The phone is capable of taking great pictures with the Stock Camera if you have good light conditions like you see in my sample shots. They were taken with the main camera and just point and shoot. No fiddling around in the pro menu. However in low light I would recommend using the Google Camera port. The results are night and day compared to the stock camera and also selfies come out better with the Google camera.

maybe it's some little hand movement while taking the shot, you should try to take a picture with the phone fixed so you see the real result.

I'm not a huge photographer. I really need the camera only for point and shoot scenarios and for that the cameras in this phone are more than enough. And for low light and selfies I just use Gcam.

That's actually impressive that a phone can capture that much details!! I wonder how it looks with Gcam.

GCam result look better for me, even the Night Mode. Stock cam sometimes abit blur/miss focus, dunno why... but with GCam, the contras is more stunning than the stock.
Pro mode stock app can take longer shutter speed than Moment Pro Camera app that i have.
anyone tries the video? Moment Pro Camera app video still cannot shoot 24fps, Filmic Pro cannot open the app.

Any idea why the phone doesn't support 4k60 Video? Because it can take 1080p240 Video which uses the same bandwidth .

What version and settings of Gcam are you guys using?

The IMX582 doesn't take 4K60 but only 30 frames. If you go full HD then 60 fps is ok. It is the snapdragon 730 that can't and it's the only difference with the pro version (snap 855)

the latest on that poat in this thread
MIUI Sky Filter can help changes dull sky to a blue sky ? awesome
FilmicPro team still working on issue for Mi9T, just got invitation beta tester, they say will update it soon.

Do you guys have autofocus issues while recording videos? Mine aren't smooth at all, few sporadic lags and a lot of "bounce" effect caused by the lense that fails to focus.

yes, autofocus was or maybe still is broken, especially in 60fps mode - not sure how it is now on stable roms, as am using betas.
4K video are nowhere at 30 fps, more around 20fps.
I can see that EIS is working at 4K res on 9.8.8 beta
Honestly my Pocophone is much better in video recording than Mi9T.
Still photo wise - I have made many nice shots with pocophone in past, not a single one as nice with Mi9T so far...

pro mode, 32seg expó. beautiful night

I put together a couple low light camera comparisons. The only editing done to the original photos was cropping to get things to line up as well as I could.

Thx... Looks great.
Seems like the Nexus port is the best solution
really like the slider in the sample pictures! great idea. so google camera port is the way to go.
Question: Can you also take shot in 16:9 instead of 4:3
All current media viewers like any phone or TV set is 16:9 so i prefer to shoot in that screen dimension
Essential Phone camera experience is still a mixed bag. Regular pics using stock Essential app range from very good to poor depending on lighting. Much better with Google cam port but still not as good as most current flagships or even some older phones like Nexus 6P/ 5x, original Pixel or OnePlus 3T. Using the monochrome camera on this phone is a completely different story. Black and White pics look outstanding with great detail.

For a real low light photo I'd be using a proper camera and not rely on a phone to take the photo. I have the Mate 10 and even that with its brilliant camera I don't use in real low light conditions so either way I took this photo in a pitch black room with the Essential Phone using its camera and I can't see any pixellation anywhere

I actually find that the stock app normally performs much better than GCam in mid-low light. I use GCam only in the sun.
GCam tends to try to bring out way too much detail in the image, resulting in a picture that just looks like a grainy mess.

Agreed, I find the stock camera is taking better shots than any of the Google camera apk's I've tried. Granted, most of my testing has been indoors.
How does the camera quality on snapchat look?

HDR+ Google Camera Mod

Anyone tried the ported HDR+ google camera on LG G5? If yes, how's the photo quality compared to stock?
https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-hdr-ported/
I've been using the HDR app on my G5. Works well so far. A test shot of a convenience store after close gave opportunity for vibrant colors and bright lights against shadows. The normal camera on auto mode had entirely blown out whites at the cooler. G5 HDR gained some detail there and balance overall. Google HDR+ restored much more detail in the whites, truly dynamic range. It did tend to oversaturate but it was much more accurate to the naked eye than the normal camera actually. It also darkened the shadows a bit much but again that was more accurate visually and detail was still there to recover in post processing if desired.

Is the middle photo HDR+? That looks the best to me.
I tried taking some pics with it.... Dynamic range is phenomenal but the colors aren't as vibrant nor do they pop as they do on a pic taken from the stock camera app

That was stock camera HDR in middle. On a standalone picture aesthetic I'd agree due to brightness but do note the HDR+ seemed more accurate in context of a store with no overhead lights on after midnight. Stock made it look like I was open lol.
In low light there is so much less noise with G Cam compared to other apps. Also with direct opposing sunlight I prefer the G Cam. Rest is handled better by LG Cam IMO.
I agree that the colors are not as vibrant with G Cam though.

I'll be honest, it's pretty bad, frequently off focus, poor low light, lack of stabilization, but maybe fine for the price range I guess
Redmi Note 5 is probably the better choice for photo quality
Nonetheless, I think updates might help. At least I hope

In daylight conditions pictures turns out good with good focus , saturation levels etc. But color reproduction needs work and in low light conditions noise is quite apparent. Portrait is like 7/10. Selfies turn out good after the recent update, 8.5/10.
P.S. For stabilized videos I use nokia camera app and its upto the mark .
Low-light picture quality is abominable. Zoom tears images, there is a lot of noise. Images in daylight are pretty decent. For this price range, the camera quality is justifiable (I suppose). I have a Moto G4 Plus and it takes amazing photos compared to this device. If you remove the portrait mode, Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 has nothing over the Moto G4 Plus camera.
Hope to see changes in future updates.
Yes, pretty disappointed with the camera performance. I should have got the RN5 instead but since I already got this, I'll stick with it as taking pictures is not the main thing for me on this phone. Still, the quality is far off from the various paid reviews.

Moreover with Gcam you also get additional features like panorama , ar stickers and google lense.

Don't know but it is definitely better than the original Asus camera app
Earlier the photos taken from Asus were not that great as that of redmi note 5pro, but now with Google cam installed these are now coming extra ordinary, thanks for the team made possible without rooting the phone.

I installed Google camera after enabling api through fastboot but not much big effect is seen from Snapdragon camera
For example I did portrait mode on Google camera but it takes much time than Snapdragon camera and also showing images of low resolution and small megapixel (my camera support 16 MP but it showed images from 8 MP and allow motion is not working and hdr+enhanced is allowed but not working, the camera got stuck every time it is turned on
Okay at well lit conditions, not good at low light
During daylight, the rear camera photos are good.
But the phone doesn't focus properly on close objects.
The low light camera is bad. A lot of noise, less light detection, slow focus, etc.
The video quality (1080p) during day is good. But the device takes time to focus during a video recording.

Mate 10 Pro Camera

Hello,
I recently got a new Mate 10 Pro. I tested the camera and I think that the photos looks ok, but the video quality is not as good. The videos in 4K look ok, but in 1080p/30fps and 1080p/60fps the videos looks bad, noisy.
I updated the phone to Android 9 and EMUI 9 before I shoot the photos and the videos, so I don't know the quality before the update.
Another problem is that I cannot find the video stabilization ON/OFF setting. At one moment I found it, but I don't know if it was before or after the Android 9 update.
I also saw that sometimes the autofocus is not properly working when shooting videos.
My software version is 9.0.0.161.
1. Are there any problems regarding the update or my phone is broken ?
2. Does anyone also have those problems ?
Hi, I don't think you have a hardware problem. I have this phone since 16th november of 2018, with Oreo 8.0.0.157 C432-L29, i didn't have those problems. In Android Pie i think the app doesn't have the same performance like Oreo's. The AI of this app is INCAPABLE of making things right now, for me. Shooting photos is better, but videos in 1080p looks a bit weird , especially in low light condition. Maybe this is the problem. Let's hope in the next updates, they will fix it and make it better.
Thanks for the reply.
Is there anyone more with the same problem ?

1st: video has been very bad on Huawei phones for a long time. It has not gotten better, even the mate 20 pro is far behind apple and Samsung.
2nd: stabilization only works for up to 1080p30. 1080p60 and 4K do not support stabilization thus you won’t find the setting when shooting it.
3rd: the phone has improved it’s photo quality and camera app in general over the past year I have had the phone since Jan 2018. It got updates every 2 months with new features almost every time. They added handheld night mode, face unlock, 960fps slomow, improved aperture depth detection, improved AI (looks a lot less oversaturated now) it also got gpu turbo and much much more. In the span of a year i Must say huawei impressed me.
4th: it took me some time to get to know the camera. Now my shots are much better (I use raw from pro mode) so it’s mostly about the photographer.

I can't find the video stabilization settings in 1080p30. This setting (stabilization on/off) does not appear in the camera menu.
Is the described problem in the first post a software or a hardware problem ? What should I do ?

It is software since it is electronic stabilization it is software only. I have just checked and I don’t have the option in my phone either but I think it’s on automatically since there is a big crop. This is because they use the outer edges of the image sensor to make up for the movement. You can google how EIS in videos work. You can see much more when using 1080p60 so there is no EIS but when you switch to 1080p30 there is a huge crop.
Edit: I have just tested it. Eis works on 1080p30. I was walking and shaking a lot and with 1080p60 there is a lot of shaking with 30 only very little.
Hardware stabilization is optical stabilization but it does not do much (it is always on btw it is a way how the lense is built) except for removing shaking when taking photos it is especially useful in dark conditions where the shutter speed is reduced to take more light in. It will almost do nothing in videos. You can find out if a phone has optical image stabilization if you gently hit you phone close to the camera with one hand while holding it with your other there should be a little noise like there coins inside the phone.. That is because the lenses move around in order to counter camera movement from shaky hands.

Lol sorry. Well it can’t be hardware if all is well when recording 4K or taking photos. So I guess it just doesn’t live up to your standards. In general many YouTube reviews criticize that 1080p looks more like 720p upscaled. Maybe that’s what you mean also.

May I know the Android version and camera software version on your Mate during that test?

Does Oppo Reno supper Google camer?

Anyone with that phone tried google camera app?
Or no support for Google camera with oppo again with this phone?
Is still early days and I'm not sure whether the camera does raw and what level access oppo allows either
I've been checking daily but it seems there's no development for it yet. However, given that it's the same sensor as in the oneplus 7 pro, and if the phone has the same level of permissions, then you could assume gcam will work for the main rear sensor which for me is the important one.

Hi thanks for the info.
My biggest drive to use the gcam is for people. My huawei mate 10 beauties so much, even with ai turned off. Prior to huawei blocking gcam, it took great pictures.
Most cameras, especially Samsung, beautify by default which is why I'm really keen on gcam but on a great phone like the 10x zoom. My huawei smooths my kids face so much he looks like a cgi cartoon
The camera isn't that bad, better said it is quit good IMO, and it is way better than the camera on my OnePlus 5T.
Once the Gcam will be better, we can easily switch.
