Battery drain and firmware relation? - Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Questions & Answers

Hi there!
I love fresh stuff so updates of ROM, kernel and firmware are must have for me. For the better and for the worse. It happened for the worse. I've been waiting a year for stable pie roms to appear that have zero screen wake delay and Syberia was the only room with EAS support. I thought why not. So flashed Syberia Latest in may of 2019 and latest stable, global firmware from xiaomifirmwareupdater. I was very satisfied with Syberia's experience and even more it's kernel performance that I didn't have to flash a custom kernel. I've been using the rom till yesterday for about 3 months and always flashed newer updates of Syberia and opengapps pico. My mido device started to drain battery much faster. Even that much that for example when I wake up at 6:30 am and arrive at work for 8:00 10-20% battery juice is already drained even though all I did was read comics in a simple reader. Tried to solve the issue but after all my mido device is 3 years old. got the conclusion that my battery sadly went broke. Still it was extremely annoying for me that I can't read comics for more than 7 hours during my shift (I'm a seasonal pool warden so I do nothing from 8:00 to 20:00) because my phone's battery dies no matter how I try no to let it. I've had enough so I changed rom and even firmware. Flashed latest China stable firmware which arrived in july and latest Pixel Experience. See wonder now my battery drains way slower and the phone shows me that it can run for 1 day and a bit more from 100% to 0%. I'm so happy and relieved that there isn't anything wrong with my battery.
I want to find out what caused the extreme drain. I really do. Could you guys please help me find the cause? Was it the previous firmware? Syberia updates? The stock kernel? The opengapps packages?
I have a few clues but I hope there are others with more knowledge on battery factors. Thanks a lot in advance.

Maybe kernel and apps usage. You should check the in battery statistics it may mobile network standby.

I used better battery stats all the time and it showed nothing unusual. Not on Syberia, not on PE. Furthermore I used Migrate app so I have every single app on PE that I had on Syberia with exact same settings. Perhaps the high battery drain was caused by one of Syberia's system app? If yes shouldn't I've been able to see it in BBS? If it was caused by an user installed app shouldn't the problem migrate to PE as well with the apps? I still think firmware caused the battery drain but I can't belive something certainly based on my gut.

Perhaps yes. Perhaps no. I use BBS all the time and it never showed me unusual activity on Syberia. Furthermore I used migrate app so I have every single app on PE that I used on Syberia with the exact same settings but there is no bettery drain present. If user installed apps were the cause of battery drain shouldn't the drain migrated with them as well?
I still think it could have been a firmware issue.

I'd like to. I really do but I spent years on Oreo. Loved it but it was so hard for me to get used to Pie and I've waited like for a year for a working Pie rom that didn't had any issues not even screen wake delay. Now that I've migrated to Pie I'm not planning to go back...

Did you ever try to use a bugreport + Battery Historian (Google's own tool) to check what is using your battery? I put together a small article about it on Telegra.ph the other day. Which MIUI ROM's firmware are you using actually at the moment? Some ppl. says that in less LTE covered areas the firmware derived from global stable ROM V9.6.3.0 does a really good job. Did you try to up- or downgrade the firmware? Did you ever try to disable LTE and use 2G/3G preferred or 2G/3G auto mode?

No. I never hear about those tools. All I saw over the web was better battery stats and it was widely recommended. So I used that. I was using 2019/05/16 china firmware while the battery drain was noticeable. Now I'm on 2019/07/19 china firmware and the battery drain is gone. I dunno. Since I didn't find anything about cellular network signals causing the battery drain I didn't experiment with it at all. It's constantly turned on. Like for a year now. I'll try 9.6.3.0 stable firmware and report back how battery drain is.

I would never use the chinese firmwares on a global phone, especially when your are not in China.. I had issues in the past with some chinese firmware versions but never had any with the global ones (here in Hungary we use different carrier technologies than companies in PRC and as far as I know global is optimised differently for a different market, not for China).

I see. Good to know. I've been using chinese firmware for a good while now without issues. But I flashed the adviced 9.6.3.0 global stable now. I'll take your advice and stay away from China firmware. It'd only make sense.

(HELP) Very Poor battery Standby Time on Redmi Note 3 Kenzo....

Hi there. I've Redmi Note 3 Kenzo for a month now. I've problem with my phone battery backup. It have very poor standby time. Even when I'm not using my phone it continuously looses 2/3 percent of battery per hour i.e around 40-50 % in a day . I usually turn off data, wifi , GPS etc after using even though its the same. I tried MIUI 8 Global as well as Chinese (Both stable and Beta version), even downgraded to MIUI 7 on various version, used eu.xiaomi ROM, MultiROM etc but still there is same problem. In some custom ROMS like CM 13 and RR Remix there is a bit improvement in standby time but not as it must be in 4100 mah battery. As I like using MIUI than custom ROM so my problem is still there. I am tired of flashing various ROM every now and than. Does anyone facing same problem. Can anyone help me and suggest some ways of solving this problem. Any help will be highly appreciated. Hope someone will Help. Please................

+1,
i am too tired of flashing this and that ROM,but battery is too horrible for me ,mostly with miui ,I get only 5-6 h sots with miui,
however my experience with nougat cm is quiet satisfactory ,it gives at least a reasonable sot,if u find something pleaaase pm me too.
It's most likely an app that is causing this. Are you able to see if the phone is going into deep sleep?

I tried Wake Lock Detector but couldn't find any app causing the problem. I even tried Greenify and Amplify app but no improvement. It seems its Problem In MIUI Rom cause using custom ROM i get a bit improvement in standby battery life. Any suggestion can you give like Which version of MIUI Rom is better for battery life.
Is there anyone who can help? Please.....
I'm currently on xiaomi.eu rom 6.11.3 (since it is the only one that allows for use of custom kernels with goodix at this time) and I get what I feel is good battery life. You could try this ROM if you have an unlocked bootloader.

Thanks for your reply. But i already tried that Rom. And yes i have officially unlocked bootloader. I usually get satisfactory SOT but my only problem is standby time. Battery is decreasing constantly even without using my phone. Currently using RR Remix Rom and getting a bit satisfactory result but i really like MIUI so I'm looking for a fix. Thanks again.

Idle Battery Drain (Google Services, mobile radio active) with any Custom ROM

Hello everyone,
I come with a problem that I've been having for two months now: every custom ROM I have installed (unofficial LOS13, LOS14.1, Omni 7.1, RR) has a huge battery drain of about 4-5% per hour in idle state if it's using data. It's 3G HSPA+ with the signal being mostly on the green side, mind you. This is not a problem of the battery itself, because I have switched back to MIUI and the idle battery drain is reasonable (around 2% every three or four hours). It doesn't seem to be a deep sleep problem either, as wakelock detectors have detected the phone in deep sleep and I've even used ForceDoze. I also turn off most sync options by default.
The problem seems to come when I install those ROMs with either GApps or MicroG; the battery stats show Google/MicroG Services making this huge battery drain and it's attributed to it being Mobile Radio Active.
I have tried submitting a bug report to LOS14.1's bug tracker a month and a half ago, but I've got no response at all from the maintainer, only people mentioning they have the same problem. The developer of the Radon kernel also tried to help, but in the end it seemed like this problem may not have to do with the kernel (tried his kernel on MIUI and there was no drain, but I got drain in any Custom ROMs with it, same as any Custom ROM default kernel).
I've tried everything I can think of, but I'm at a loss of what to do. I'd like to stay far away from MIUI, but at the same time I don't want to have to charge my battery every day with a very light usage. Can anyone with some technical knowledge help?
Thanks
EDIT: Should add that I've done the tests with no other app installed besides the default ones plus Open GApps Pico/MicroG.
1% every two hours isn't good either, maybe your carrier doesn't have fast dormancy and that's why you get battery drain. Might be a long shot but worth trying to disable it.
Can't help with how to do it though since I didn't look into it.

Well, MIUI is kinda very bloated, and I'm using dual SIM (GSM connection to the second one), so to me it seems normal it has drain when there's so much stuff waking the device up. Anyway, I'm trying the disabled fast dormancy now on RR, but it seems like the mobile radio is still very active during doze (although it seems to me to be a bit less active than with it on). It's just a bit, but thanks for the help!
I have the exact same problem the standby time for me is great but the battery life is bad when I use my phone (SOT) with or without 3G/4G or wifi on
I'm on RR

I think atm android is reporting play services drain wrongly.
Mine shows play services kept the device awake for 2 hours but GSam shows play services held it for 47 seconds and total is 42 minutes, at least half of it was Bluetooth streaming.
So use GSam and maybe bbs to figure out what's going on and if mobile radio drains too much.

Well, the battery drain is definitely there, and it only happens when I install GApps (Open GApss Pico)/MicroG. Also, I've done these tests with no other app installed, so there's no other possible culprit that I see besides something from the system, which seems to be the case, as I only have the drain in custom ROMs and not official MIUI with Google stuff.

@Nowowo
So I'm one of those which have this exact problem.
So I have two main theories about this problem:
1-I'm beginning to think that this is not related to some kind of bug that is in the custom rom's firmware, but to SOMETHING THAT IS MISSING in every custom rom, in every kernel and in every firmware later than a certain time, that was supposed to always stay in the phone from the factory condition.
This missing thing might be the DRIVERS for the MODEMS that drive the antenna in our cell, that connects to the carriers bands.
2-It might be that our cellular carriers are switching things around (like updating to 4g networks), and since our phone is not compatible with band 20 (800 mHz) our snartphone can't receive 3g as well as before.
So, for starting to organize a real troubleshoot guide for this big problem, we need to start with small steps.
The first maybe to ask each other (the ones who refer to this exact problem) some questions, for clearing the path of trouble shooting:
1-Which is the country where you live (approximately)?
2-What carrier do you have?
3-Have you ever unlocked the phone using the unofficial way?
.Carlocarnev2000: I live in Italy, I have coopvoce carrier (a vitual carrier under TIM networks, which are most powerful here in Italy), I have always unlocked the phone with the official way.
We can stay strong and find a way to solve this!

I have tried to disable fast dormancy too... But trust me, it will just reduce your battery drain a bit, but because it's a forced way to make the cell modem to connect always with the same frequencies without changing them. Fast dormancy these days is integrated in every phone and in every firmware, and it is a wide spread technology in all over the world. It is useless to try to disable it.
We need to find why this problem affects our phones.

I agree with your point 1, maybe Xiaomi added something to their official ROM that custom ROMs are missing. As for 2, that should be a problem only with 4G in Europe, I believe, but it happens to me in 3G with voice over LTE disabled and the connection option being one of those that don't have 4G.
As for the questions, I'm from Western Europe, my carrier uses band 900 for 3G (Orange), which is the only connection I use and my phone has been officially unlocked.

It is definetily the fault of the modem drivers that are baked in every single rom.
It maybe that our modem antenna in our device is different (by version or manufacturer) and that the drivers right for our antenna are missing. @Nowowo @{s3rious}Where did you buy your kenzo's from?
I personally bought it from Gearbest almost a year ago (20/07/2016).
I'm doing some research on the antenna versions...
Oh I forgot to mention, firmware from official roms suck.
That's the one posted in official Los thread too.
I extracted the firmware from a Xiaomi. Eu rom and got a more stable signal, maybe it will solve the drain.

Yeah I think that, since we live in europe, and the developers live in eastern and western countries (like arabia and america), they have totally forgotten our device from europe, and they stopped putting in the right versions of drivers for europe.
@vkass But the point is: since TheStrix's firmware is extracted directly from the xiaomi global developer firmware without any changes.
This all means that the official Xiaomi firmware has forgotten the european users!
So now we have to tell TheStrix to somehow include the firmware from Xiaomi.eu into his version, so that in the future it will be integrated and we will not have the need to flash the one from xiaomi.eu.

I don't think that is the problem. I did one of my installs over a xiaomi.eu ROM and it stayed the same. Also, my signal is practically the same both in MIUI and LOS (as per *#*#4636#*#* phone command). It stays in the green side, don't listen to the signal bar thing because in MIUI it requires less signal strength than on LOS to show a full bar.
If it were something from the bundled firmware, I believe it would affect the official ROM, but it doesn't. I think it is the ROM, that maybe can't make full use of the firmware or is missing something.
As for me, I bought my phone off some aliexpress shop with good rating around 8 months ago.

@Nowowo What I am trying to say is that the signal fluctuaitions are a bad bug that afflicts us european users that try to use custom roms as a whole. And it's because the official miui software lacks the support for europe. In fact now I'm on miui beta (global developer) 7.6.29 and the 3g signal reception is as bad as the one from the custom roms (if not worse).
The only ones that support in some way the our device (kenzo) at a european level is the xiaomi.eu team, in fact there not only the antenna sensitivity is improoved, but also the gps and the compass is optimized for our satellites far better.
What I am trying to say is that the official xiaomi software leaves out on the most important parts such as those said before.
If it isn't at firmware level what is it then?
@vkass I'll try the latest xiaomi.eu firmware.
I bought the device from HonorBuy. So you think that it has something to do with the firmware. Have you seen any improvements after you flashed xiaomi eu firmware?

Can you upload those firmwares online, or share the steps how to export them from rom?

Wakelocks on AOSP ROMs

I have tried pretty much all AOSP ROMs and I am finding that all of them have huge number of wakelocks. At night my phone is awake for about 1.5 to 2 hours out of 7-8 hours and drains 7-10% battery over this time. Even with clean install and only minimum apps installed.
In battery useage apps they show up as Kernel (Android OS) and Linage OS System in battery usage apps. Any idea how to find and resolve this?
same for me!
This only happens on AOSP roms? Not on Lineage OS?

I included Lineage OS and everything else in AOSP - non MIUI ROMs.

So this doesn't happen in stock rom? I'm getting my Redmi 5 Plus today and i plan to flash a custom rom because i don't like bloatware and gapps, but if this is a big issue i don't know if i should for now.

I don't think so. Stand by on Stock ROM was much better for me. Lost 0% overnight.
same happens to me.
Same for me.
same here. 1% lost every hour overnight, just mobile signal, no wifi, no bluetooth no gps
Try using AppOps to deny the following permissions for the apps you have installed - keep awake, auto start, run in background. Exclude messaging, clock and dialer apps from this procedure.

These guides can help, but are most likely not longer necessary past Android 7.
I am doing a test by clean flashing, not installing any apps and not even installing Gapps to see if the same drain happens. Will report back.
Cleaned flashed, NO GAPPS, NO other apps, left phone for 8 hours, lost 8%. "Significant motion detector" was awake for 2.5 hours. Same wakelock on all ROMs, seems like an issue with this phone. I don't know if it happens on MIUI but I guess no?
It might be because all the ROMs are based on the initial work of mdeejay and tingyichen, as I understand it. All the AOSP ROMs are basically the same, only varying in tiny amounts of superficial stuff that is added to them.
Did you try the unofficial OmniROM build? It's the only non-Lineage ROM that's developed from scratch (by ex-CM devs), and to me it does feel different than all the rest, in a positive way.
use better battery stats for understanding the culprit. i am on 8.1 AEX and overnight drain is 0.5%. 0n miui it was 1%.
Sent from my vince using XDA Labs
What phone do you have ? 3/32 or 4/64? And what baseband firmware? I ask because I had same 1% per hour drain on aex too. I wonder if having encryption on makes a difference?
I am tired of trying new roms and kernels but all behave the ssme. 35% time awake
Can you try to post a Better Battery Stats log? Is your WiFi turned on during idle?

No, everything turned off, only mobile signal. Also tried in airplane mode.

Please post a Log from Better Battery Stats. The only thing I can think of is that weak signal is draining your device's battery.

Not possible if its happening even in Airplane mode.

Horrible battery life

Hey, I have a redmi note 4 snapdragon version and I have flashed aosp extended rom and franco kernel in it, but I am getting a very poor battery life, hardly 1 hour screen on time and the phone shuts off by the time battery gets to 30 to 20%. My phone is rooted too and i am not using any kind of battery saver app.
:crying:
I think this is an hardware issue but, I am no expert so please help me on this and let me know what should i do. Thank you.

The problem started probably when i rooted my phone on stock rom(miui 10), the very next day i cleaned every thing (including my firmware accidentally) to flash custom rom, then after flashing i found out that none of the hardware components are working and i posted a thread about it and as per the answers i flashed a latest chinese firmware for redmi note 4.And it worked except i started noticing an awfully bad battery backup(hadn't noticed before as all this happened in just 2 days. (as a matter of fact the battery went down 5% as i wrote this, oh 6 now!)
HELP

I had similar problems.
I clean flashed the latest OFFICIAL AOSPExtended, Ethereal Kernel and Global STABLE firmware.
Haven't had any issues since.
Maybe it works for you?

Cleaning everything, as you stated, including the whole firmware,
You answered your whole thread yourself, just flash stock frimware, then flash AEX like flashing any normal ROM.
I have the same problem, the battery die after 1h screen, when the battery Is on 20% the device shutdown, help me pls, i have rr with franco kernel.
hi OP. base on what you are describing, it looks like your battery is dying... nothing to do with the OS. be careful 'cause chinese batterys (like 70%) turn out to be real sh*t (on my own experiance). consider to replace battery from a confiable retailer or change device.

Question What do you think about MIUI 13 battery life?

Just upgraded to newest MIUI 13. I factory reset my device for the new OS update. I'm in doubt if battery is better or worse.
What is your experience?
Mine is 30% better
I have not noticed any difference after upgrading to MIUI 13, it seems to be the same.
Everything is better on miui 13 except dark mode for individual apps (not working). You?
Are there any bugs in miui 13?

There is no bug-free software - except the single liners like "Hello world"
But I'm questioning myself about TWRP, Magisk, Magisk modules under MIUI 13/A12

Haven't really seen any big battery improvements, except that it's true, it lasts a LITTLE bit longer.
I'm using a mi 11 ultra and since i updated it to MIUI 13 battery life went from average to terrible. I now barely reach 5h of SOT... I reset the phone and tried many things but nothing worked. I wish I had stayed under MIUI 12.5

I'm sure by flashing the MIUI 12.5 rom that you can find on xiaomi's website or with xiaomi.eu ROMs, you should be able to rehave that battery life. But, you should also install betterbatterystats, to see which process use that much battery. 5h of SOT is pretty low.
I don't want to go to through the hassle of downgrading.. I shouldn't have to do that to have the battery life i used to have... Xiaomi doesn't know how to handle updates properly. Thank you though
I found ultra battery saver mode to be very bad. It used to have 350 hours and now it's 55 hours. Rest all seems to be okay.

From the first few days of testing, I'd say it's worse, and quite noticeable. I get around 4 SoT, usually it was around 5-6 with 90hz... I did a fresh install on a factory reseted phone Tho it might be the fact that neither the miui backup nor Google backup saved any of my settings, so might be few weeks till I get my phone into it's operating window...
But then again, phone seems a lot faster to me, and cold as ice.
When will MIUI 13 come for Xiaomi 11 Lite NE 5G? Any Idea?
I got OTA notif ten days ago (but I don't want to update,)
You can find another thread and posts (search, read thread titles for 5g ne) where other users already received and updated
After all, if you don't receive in your country (who knows Xiaomi policies about updating), you can find the MIUI 13 firmware on Xiaomi Firmware Updater site, and by googling instructions how to install manually

No, I just did a classic OTA update.
At 80% (I usually don't go more than that on a regular day), I got a battery estimation around 20 hours.
most of the time, SOT 4 hours, facebook, whatsapp, messenger, twitter
