Introduction
There are some myths and misbeliefs around unlocking the Xiaomi Mi 5. And as I got lucky and got my Mi 5 early and unlocked it, I will share some screenshots as well as my opinion on this matter.
What shall I do? How to increase my chances?
Right now there is no custom ROM, and if you want root access, you can get it through the Security App of MIUI. So that means you can spend the next weeks to become a Diamond member on the forum, post a bit everyday and you get it fast. As Diamond members on the MIUI forum are whitelisted, it will increase your chances.
Good to know, good to have
Your MI Account must be allowed to unlock phones

A: Not out of the box, so no.
Q: Can I lock the bootloader again?
A: Yes, the Fastboot-ROM includes a flash_all_lock script
Q: Can one Mi Account unlock several phones?
A: Yes and No. One Mi Account can unlock one phone every 30 days.
Q: Does the fingerprint scanner work after unlock?
A: Yes, I noticed no difference, so far it works like a charm.
Q: Why do I need / want an unlocked bootloader?
A: It allows you to flash custom Recovery and Custom ROMs as well as use the Mi-Flash tool.
Q: Is the Mi 5 encrypted?
A: By default it is yes. (See the following screenshot)
Screenshot of Privacy setting page (Shows that phone is encrypted)

Man, I didn't see you before on xiaomi.eu or mi2s section but guys like YOU are the reason why this community is alive. In less than a day you have cleared up all my doubts about mi5 wich I was wondering as my next purchase. Now I nearly have no doubts (only price).
So let me say you a huge THANK YOU. This start is what I call a "good star" for this device
Back on topic, I have a decent number of posts on en.miui.com and far less on miui.com do you think this is taken into consideration when evaluating the unlock request by xiaomi engineers? I've heard so. Did you receive the unlock code by sms or it was instant as shown in your slides?

I had a Mi4i (for about a month or so) and was in the MIUI Device team with ~900 Credits, but as the hardware failed I sold the Mi4i last summer. Since then I was more or less inactive on http://en.miui.com/forum.php ... When the apply for unlocking came out sometime in December / January, I asked to get the unlock allowance, but forgot about it. So I can't remember at all, and am of no help.
A friend got a Redmi Note 3 (Pro), has an MI account with only ~80 Credits and got the unlock allowance quite fast. (around a week)
He did receive a message on his phone today:
I have read that there some claim you need at least ~300 credits so that myth got proven wrong with his unlock. But I don't get the pattern. I have no idea how it works.

There is only one ROM for the Mi5 and that's the China ROM (stable). I am on 7.2.6 right now.
Mate on the second image i see "checking if your Mi Account has permission" have you made something to get permissions? Because i read somewhere that for unlocking bootloader you need a particular status on Miui forum...thanks in advance!

Is there an English version of this website?
nvm, found it:

Doesn't seem to work though
I've asked for permission with just 40 credits. Let's see what they reply in about 10 days.

Hey,
very well observed. You have to apply for an unlock. I will edit the first post and try to make it more clear.

Ha ha ha we have the same chances,i have 70 points
Just a quick question... i'm planning to buy an MI5 when the pro version will be released: i've around 170 credits on their forum, and i'm slowly grinding up to 500 in order to achieve diamond membership because i heard that if you're a diamond member your request will be more likely accepted...
Now, for example, if you get declined for the bootloader unlock can you just apply again? you have to wait some time? or you can't apply anymore?

Updated the topic a bit and added the information (you may know this already); that Diamond members are whitelisted, means they should get it faster and are more likely to get it. (It's still no guarantee)
I have never replied to any thread on their s***ty forum, got the permission after two/three weeks or sth. I don't even have any device to unlock, but maybe in the future.

On the latest developer ROM you can root in the Security Center, there is no need to install TWRP, just for rooting the phone.
(But if you **** up system apps and brick it, you may want to have TWRP)

Nope, I am not sure, but assumed so.
Like what's the point of doing it only for unlocked phones? On those phones, it's easy to boot into TWRP and sideload SuperSU.
So you are on the latest Chinese Developer firmware 6.3.17 and don't see the following screen:

new to xiaomi devices

hi i just got my redmi note 3 Indian snapdragon variant and i am new to xiaomi devices.. earlier i used samsung device...
i have some queries:
1. Where to download latest Indian rom for redmi note 3 snapdragon Indian variant,, like for samsung devices we used sammobile.com.. and how to flash rom on redmi note 3 in detail would be appreciated ...
2. Will installing stable and official rom needs unlocking bootloader and voiding warranty?
3. will installing official beta miui rom needs needs unlocking bootloader and voiding warranty and can bootloader be unlocked without voiding warranty?
4. link for official stable miui 8 for redmi note 3 Indian snapdragon variant
Better asking question start exploring xda Redmi Note 3 forum. Very few have time to answer you queries. People will only help you when atleast you have done some research or googling or you post will be remain unanswered. Just an advice because I was also new to Xiaomi last month.

Unlocking will not void warranty if anything goes wrong flash MIUI rom and take RMN to customer center. Indian RMN is Locked and unlocking it isn't easy it can take 7 days or even months for some of the users after asking for permission from MIUI. Due to long process you can unlock it with unofficial procedure here. It's risky and choice is yours. And for you advance question which will come up after this if you unlock device unofficially you can flash custom rom without any problem but if you want to flash MIUI rom replace emmc_appsboot.mbn boot file with modified boot file so you can avoid relocking of bootloader. But with official unlocking you can flash MIUI rom without any hesitation. And you an also try some TWRP with modified boot in RMN forum here in XDA. Try this link for some more clarification here. Even though I also new to RMN so don't expect me to know everything.

Hi herecomesmaggi, I already received an SMS with the permission to unlock the device.
I had read in Xiaomi forum that this is fixed by installing the chinesse dev rom, but that rom is only for MTK devices, is there a chinesse dev rom for kate/special edition?

First of all lemme clear this, chinese dev rom and global dev rom are same with only diffrence of languages(chinese rom has only english and chinese) and google apps.
I faced the same problem while unlocking my bootloader. it unlocked after 8 days of getting message. You wanna try other methods so be it, but i know for sure it takes a week after message is sent.
My advice - just wait it out . if any partition or so gets messed up, you will end up having problems in custom roms like others.. fp , camera, imei problems...

Wait atleast 2 weeks then try to unlock bootloader officially, same problem was with me when I was trying to unlock my "kenzo" device, but when after 2 weeks I tried it to unlock by official method it's successfully unlocked.
When I unlocked it my phone was on MIUI Global Stable 8.1.10.
If you can't wait and want to unlock it urgently then follow the unofficial method, link provided below.

There is an easy way to know if your device can be unlocked or not
If your device details are shown correctly, INCLUDES MIUI version, under your Avatar on MIUI forum it means the device is detected properly and the bootloader will be successfully unlocked
If there is no details of your device under your Avatar, the unlocking proccess will fail

Could not find the original method i used, but have just found it again, I managed to officially unlock after suffering several 50% failures using method 2 in the following link, I managed it with global stable installed as supplied with the phone.
http://en.miui.com/thread-434406-1-1.html
I used this method on my newly bought Kate device: https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-3/how-to/method-to-flash-twrp-recovery-unlock-t3473294
Works great! Rooted and installed xposed with locked bootloader. Now i can wait patiently for my official unlock code.
Sent from my Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 using XDA Labs
this one works for me;
Go to settings>developer options>mi unlock status> and press "add account and device"
after this you can try to unlock bootloader again.

There's an update today with more of the same. I got the other boiler plate about the "server process" and how to "be patient":
>From: service.global [email protected]

>Also, I would request you to kindly wait for some
>time regarding the authorization of the Mi Account as
>it is server process so, it may take some time. Till the
>time, I would request you to keep some patience. We

>Please get in touch with us if you need any further assistance.
I don't think we need "to be patient". We must be polite, but persistent.
So, go and ask Xiaomi for a clear and responsible attitude. If you have the bricked phone problem, don't just spend time on the forums. Send an email to the Xiaomi customer service!
Here is how:

Hi. Thousands of users, including myself {MI ID ______} , are facing the ARB-bricked Xiaomi
phones issue.
There are literally thousands of people with soft-bricked phones due to your poorly announced
and poorly executed ARB decision, which is contrary to Xiaomi's past policies and promises
of hardware openness.
The hottest topics on the MIUI forums are about Xiaomi not addressing the issue.
It is literally a flood. Here are some, and some that have been there for weeks.
http://en.miui.com/thread-3612759-1-1.html

http://en.miui.com/thread-3149410-1-1.html
Xiaomi's poor decision bricked thousands of new phones.
Some users did get authorizations, most of us were left hanging.
There are now scammers who post offers to unbrick for money, who ask
people for remote access to their PC and phone. Xiaomi is putting many, many
of its customers at unacceptable risks because of the stubborn refusal to
provide the required access in a timely manner. This is completely unacceptable.
You must not reply with boilerplate excuses, but with a solution.
Please don't stall, and explain your policy and "the server process" fairly to
everyone.
And please authorize my (and everyone else's) account for EDI flashing.
Best regards:"

It's ok to ask Xiaomi for a statement but you cant really blame Xiaomi for the bricks.
They sell 2 kind of devices :
CHINA and Global.
China are supposed to work only in china and you should not "hack" them with unlocking+flashing others rom.
Global is what you are supposed to buy if you want a Xiaomi phone.
It's simple, at least read before unlock/flash things. That's why people have bricks now. It's written everywhere, with china model you CANT relock bootloader if global is on it. Easy. If you are touching bootloader is supposed that you know what you are doing, otherwise dont do it.

Most people buying Xiaomi devices on Chinese online stores don't know that policy and the seller didn't tell anything nor Xiaomi till a few weeks.
Xiaomi should stop selling hijacked devices.

Then fun fact is that. Xiaomi dont officially sell hijacked devices.
Resellers do it.
They buy stock of chinese devices and then "hack" with some EDL or something to unlock bootloader immediatly, flashing global and "advertising" it like a Global Phone. Some tell you that is unlocked+global, others dont.
For example, my case. Mi8 from eGlobal on eBay. It should've been STOCK Cinese Phone, with locked bootloader and just english or chinese language. It arrived with unlocked bootloader and global rom on it.
You can't really blame Xiaomi...

I am getting an MI 8 from AliExpress and the phone is a China variant with unlocked bootloader + global ROM on it. I know I can't relock the bootloader as it has a global ROM.
Couple of questions:
1. After I add my MI account to the device, will I be able to debrick it if it ever gets bricked?
2. Since it was unlocked by some reseller's account, it's tied to their account and only they can unlock it if it's bricked?
3. Only way to relock is to flash the China ROM and unlock it using my MI account (after 720 hours)?
1 depends the way u brick...
2 no... after the unlock, they remove the account from the phone.
3 u awnsered your on question. if you flash china rom, u will relock.. if u unlock after that, u will unlock the boot loader again.

I think you re-locked the bootloader after flashing Global ROM. You can unbrick it in 2 ways:
1. Unlock the bootloader again and flash Global Fastboot ROM keeping bootloader unlocked.
2. Use MiPCSuite V3 and flash China ROM again.

@navin_n, @Dalendra7,
MiPCSuite V3 seems to work !... But it only accepted to flash the ROM that I already flashed via MiFlash and which bricked my phone, which is Global 10.0.2.0
So MiPCSuite V3 works but I can't install either an older global version or a Chinese version, older or more recent.
Except for EDL and test point, what are our options ?
Thanks
