Missing Google Camera Smart Burst - Google Pixel 3 Guides, News, & Discussion

Am I the only one really pissed off by the removal of Smart Burst capability from Google Camera in our Pixel 3 in Android 10?
I just can't believe it... So useful thing, just removed supposedly in favour of Top Shot, which is something that covers just part of what you could do with Smart Burst.

Glad to know.

Just found out and I am super pissed.
Worst part, I can't roll back because the USB port on my pixel 3 has been dead.
This is very messed up! I use the 3 takes a lot of sport action photos. That 1.5 sec via Top Shot is not enough time.
This update is total BS!!!

It seems in Android 10 there isn't available the remove updates option from the app info. Real bummer!

it was such a useful feature. top shot just doesn't have enough frames!

You buy a phone with a set of features... and less and a year after, Google just removes one of them... I still can't believe.

They didn't remove the uninstall updates feature, but it's instead hidden underneath the overflow menu on the app info page. You can revert the app back to the version which still includes Burst photos.

Right, or you can just uninstall it from google play which will set the version having the burst mode enabled :good:

Nope not the only one... I miss this feature a lot. As long as the quality of the "Top shot pictures" is lower than a "normal picture" (which is the case at the moment) it's no replacement for "Smart burst"..... :/
Is there a way to have the version with Smart burst still in and the latest version of the camera app installed at the same time ... Then I could at least choose the old version whenever I want to use Smart burst.

Smartburst restored!
Pixel 2 XL: I went to the Google play store and found the Google camera. I hit the "uninstall" button and Smartburst is back without losing the other updates.
Hope this works for others!

If you are okay with moded gcam, you can try the PX camera by cstark27. It has an option to Restore smart burst.

The feature wasn't really removed. They just changed how you access it. Simply press and hold the shutter button and it records a video. The video records up to 30 fps and then you can select the single frame from that recording and save it as a photo with hdr processing applied. Enjoy!

It was not that way when burst mode dissapeared... You're replying a rather old topic.
Thanks anyway.

Hi! I had just been uninstalling camera updates to get smart burst back, which worked until I updated my Android OS. So I just installed PX camera (the most recent version for Pixel 2), and I don't see an option to restore smart burst. Would you mind pointing me in the right direction to find the setting in the PX mod? After ruining a bunch of Christmas photos/videos by trying to use top shot (thinking it was just video recorder), I've spent a few hours this evening trying to fix this camera. No luck. I'd appreciate any additional help! Thanks!

I found it under the PX Mod settings just right under the 4k Time Lapse option. Though, I've never use the smart burst feature before, so I can't really tell you if it's working.

Thanks for your quick reply! I'm not seeing that OR the 4k Time Lapse option on my 8.1 version (the one recommended for the Pixel 2). I may have to try another version of PX Mod and see if it's there. Though my camera speed has greatly slowed down since I installed it, so I may just uninstall. (Or it slowed down since the forced update that came with android... not sure which one.)
Thanks for the help!

Oh, you beautiful human, Xeust! I followed a link on an old thread from October 2019 and installed that version of PX Mod. Not sure what the file version was, but when I go to "About," I have version 4.2 of PX Mod now, and I see the Smart Burst option right where you said it would be. I turned it on, and it appears to be working! Can't wait to test it in action on my kid. Thank you so, so much! I don't have to quit buying Google products now.

[APP] Panorama for Atrix (5MP support added)

A few days ago, I saw the "Sony Panorama Beta!" thread that allows other devices to use it. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work on Atrix as the app works only on NEONs. I searched for other alternatives and found out that the BlurCamera.apk from Droid X supports panoramic pictures. I downloaded the original file from here http://www.droidforums.net/forum/92...ix-update-panorama-assist-etc.html#post887590
The app actually worked without modification but I modified it for 2 reasons:
1. The package name is com.motorola.Camera which is the same as my stock Camera/Camcorder app and it is not as simple as replacing the stock Camera app in /system/app. I had to reset the data partition before my Atrix recognized it.
2. It has a lower resolution than the stock app. maximum resolution is 3MP only.
To avoid conflict, I changed the package name to “com.panorama.Camera” and the app name to “Cam-norama” (to distinguish it from the Camera app). I also removed the Launcher icon for the Camcorder since the stock Camcorder is better.
I experienced FCs when I opened "Settings" and "Switch to video" but it seems to happen only the first time after installation.
:::: By the way, the stock OlympusCamera.apk can be modified to take panoramic pictures but when I tried to start recording, I got an FC. The maximum resolution for panorama is also set at 3MP.
2011-06-29: Added BlurCamera5MP.apk to allow 5MP panorama. The highest resolution I got was 1889px height for a 2-frame shot compared to 1499px in 3MP mode. But the more frames you capture, the resolution gets lower. It should still be better than the 3MP version though.
I tried to set the panorama maximum as 5MP Widescreen but it seems like it takes lower resolution even if I select the 5MP as the current setting so I finally made it to allow 5, 3, 2 & 1 MP only.
I got it to install (and got the first time FC like you described), however I cannot find how to set it to take panoramic photos. I can take video and photos just fine.
EDIT: I'm silly, have to hit menu and then camera modes...
And now a beautiful [and kinda blurry D:] picture of my kitchen

Unless photaf has changed since I last used it a few months ago, it takes forever for photaf to stitch the photos together, and you have to really have a steady hand, otherwise it looks like crap.

The app has a guide to help you take the next shot. It is also fast at stitching the pics together.
The app is great! i took a pic from my balcony. This took 4 shots. The far end pic on the right is my satellite. I didnt realize that I would hit it.

I accidentally pressed cam-orama camera icon while my phone was connected to my pc. When I unplugged the phone and tried the app, it reverted back to the old camera app. I tried restarting and it was still the same. I reinstalled the .apk and it was still the same. I clicked the cam-orama app again in the drawer and it worked. Perhaps this is a bug. It still works good and I posted the 2nd shot above after that bug that I encountered.

Get pixel 3 / 3 xl exclusive camera features on pixel 2 / 2xl..

Some great mind ( or is it me ?) once said ... " If its a software.. then there will definitely be a hack " ...
Pixel 3 xl may haven't shipped yet.. but software bits like pixel 3 xl launcher, wall paper, etc are out.. and with that came out its amazing camera apk...
So why not run it on pixel 2/ 2 xl.. yey.. it did run.. and most of you have already installed it.. right? Beautiful ui.. ( iphone.. we literally dont want to copy your ui.. but ... ) And then raw + jpg support..
But.. we did miss that extra things .. right? Those software bits.. which google added to the cam .. exclusively for pixel 3..
Me too...
And lil disappointed.. so i give it a try.. nothing to loose ??
And guess what.. the app showed up with all those "hidden" features..
Dont belive.. take a look at ss from my pixel 2 xl
so all you have to do is...
1. using a root file explorer, edit build.prop form system folder ( not vendor folder)
a) ro . product . model=Pixel 3 XL
b) ro . product . name=crosshatch
c) ro . product . device=crosshatch
use "blueline" and "Pixel 3" .. if you want to keep your device as smaller Pixel 3
2. reboot , now your phone model will be pixel 3 xl / pixel 3
3. install the pixel 3 camera apk mentioned in this link https://www.xda-developers.com/google-camera-pixel-3-apk-download/
4. enjoy your new camera
NB:- this is a proof of concept hack, which i managed to get from a 10 min digging on last day's sleepless night.
NB :- to make portrait mode to work, first swich to front camera ( using camera switching icon) and then switch portrait mode from there. quick test gave me result that all ( or most) features are working, except the bug in switching directly to portrait mode fc the camera app( since we dont have two sensors for front camera. ), colour pop and depth adjustments work, h.265 encoding works , if you find something wont work, report. so that we can fix it hopefully.
I didn't check the rest, nor camera quality, nor anything else.. i am not that much into code writing or things.. may be some of you can pull out more..
Thank you.
What extra feature have you got to work? You get all of this by just installing the application.

I don't think so. The only down side is that all your apps will think you have a Pixel 3 XL but I don't think that would really cause a problem. I wonder what we would need to update in order to get things like the call screener to work.

Cool! ?
The new features seem to be there, but:
- Photo Box doesn't take a picture when I smile. Does it only work with multiple people?
- How can I enable top shot? Or does it turn on automatically?
Edit: Photo Box only seems to work when I switch to the selfie camera first and then activate it. When I activate it as long as the back camera is selected, it doesn't work. May be coincidence, though

This is great, what about Focus Tracking ?
Focus tracking works. H.265 works.... Guys.. just keep in mind that ... Some features need dual front cam.. so some of those might not work in our devices..
Google lens in real time works, no need to select it, works directly in the viewfinder.
The new ar stickers (playground) still don't work.
Automatic frame rate when recording video works
Portrait mode closes cam if u switch to rear cam or choosing portrait mode on rear cam.
If u switch to front cam and using portrait, it works, but if u switch to rear cam again, it closes.
Super zoom is to use like normal zoom, yes?
Is there any chance to get a working Gcam mod on Pixel 2 XL with all features unlocked without rooting the device?

Gcam 6.1 Port with ALL CAMERAS supported in HDR+ enhanced

We finally got a version of 6.1 with the updated libraries and features (Night Sight, etc) that doesn't kill the front camera!
I've been working on this with DefconG and Cstark for a while now, trying to figure out how to fix the noise profile / black levels in the front cam so we aren't stuck with 5.1 (and its arguably inferior image quality and sharpness), and this seems to be the first major breakthrough!
https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/changelog924/
It says for Pie, but don't worry. It will install fine on Oreo. You may need to uninstall other 6.1 ports if you are having trouble installing it (on my device it conflicted with a 6.1 Arnova installation).
Front cam and both rear cams are fully supported with HDR+ Enhanced now. Night Sight is also an option. Some new funky feature too like zoom enhancements and other fun things that aren't entirely documented. Use the attached settings XML for the best V20 experience.
Definitely looks sharper, much more config options to fiddle. But after taking more than 2 photos it crashes, both with hdr, hdr enhanced, hdr off and hexagon dsp disabled.
If going for version 6 this looks like the choice.
Thanks for the good work.
Pardon my ignorance, but how do I apply the xml settings?
EDIT:
I think I got it. Writing steps for others here. Thanks man! You're the hero we need.
1. A quick search led to this: https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/f/settings09/
2. Downloading the xml seemed oddly difficult, so I downloaded it on my laptop and transferred it to my phone. It seems to be working fine

Double click the any empty black area near shutter button, it will as for the config. But be sure to copy the xml file to your \gcam\configs directory first.
I'm guessing no 7.0 support?

As far as I know, any GCam after 5.1 needs Oreo or higher, and any GCam from 6.2 on needs Pie or higher.
Sadly doesn't work on H990DS Oreo, I have version mismatch maybe because of that.
Have to go back to 5.1
Hello everyone. First off thank you so much for your work and development. I have been playing around with the 6.1 camera and I think I have everything working, but lens blur keeps force closing while processing the image.
I did download the XML file and double tap in the black area next to the shutter button change to the correct config file. But I'm still having the issue with lens blur is there something that I'm missing? Also, is there a way to make it save directly to the SD card? And any way to brighten up lens blur?
Thanks again for the awesome work. It would be really nice to only need one camera!

Haven't tried Lens Blur yet, but regarding directly saving to SD card, that's not a feature since no Google Pixel phone has an SD card slot. You'll have to rely on an automatic process to move the files for you via something like Tasker or a specific app that someone made:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-gcam-tool-automatically-photos-t3752115
In Settings I changed both front and back cameras to be 16:9. However if I press the camera switch button then the settings does not stay. It goes like this:
Main Camera (16:9) -> Front Camera (16:9) -> Wide Camera (4:3) -> Front Camera (16:9) -> Main Camera (4:3)
Is it possible to fix this behavior so that switching to the Wide camera doesn't remove my Main camera settings?

From my experience:
1. No root required
2. Xml file sets the settings/parameters which are optimal, and also somehow save the app from crashing.
Someone else might be better informed though.

There's a couple of ways to toggle the cameras which can be set in the settings menu. One is to long-press the front/back toggle button, the other is to alternate each time you go from rear cam to front cam. The long press seems makes more sense on paper, but in reality it then pauses as it resets the app. Toggling to front cam and then back to rear seems to happen faster so you are ready to take a picture sooner. But then it is confusing because taking a selfie and then back to rear you forget which camera you are on now at first. I wish there was a toggle that worked like in the stock LG app, but the quality of Gcam is so good its worth it.

Thanks for your work, really appreciate it
I've noticed that the link goes straight to the Joker version. I've tried latest one: "eldiablo" and it seems to be working fine. Should I stick with the joker version or eldiablo is just fine?
I'm on h990ds with lineage 16

I haven't tried it yet- I'm just reporting info as the guys tweaking LG cams are filling me in.
The V20 is my wife's phone, and while I spent a considerable amount of time trying to make it take awesome pictures for her, I haven't tried the latest updates. She doesn't always like me stealing her phone to tinker. Let us know how it goes?

There's a couple of ways to toggle the cameras which can be set in the settings menu. One is to long-press the front/back toggle button, the other is to alternate each time you go from rear cam to front cam. The long press seems makes more sense on paper, but in reality it then pauses as it resets the app. Toggling to front cam and then back to rear seems to happen faster so you are ready to take a picture sooner. But then it is confusing because taking a selfie and then back to rear you forget which camera you are on now at first. I wish there was a toggle that worked like in the stock LG app, but the quality of Gcam is so good its worth it.

Quality of this camera is rather impressive, better than the other 6.1 I had. Is it OK to use eldiablo version or should we use joker one? Thanks

New photo Pro app available

Guys, just seconds ago, I found, that there's the (from what I guess) new photo pro app from xperia 1 III is available here apkmirror.com
I tried to install and it worked!
Not able to take a screenshot as it's forbidden by system (not really necessary, sony). It has the new basic mode, that was shown on press release.
What are the differences with the mark II version? Difference in image quality or options?
From my guess, what sony is going to archive in future models, is to combine the normal and the pro-app, so there would be no need to develop and maintain two different apps - that saves money for them.
The linked app is already combined, some settings are slightly different insinde the pro-modes. You can switch to effects from basic-mode. I'm going to try to abandon the normal app and see, if the new one misses anything.
Thanks for posting that. I've tried it and it's great except that I normally open photo Pro in manual mode but this new app defaults to the basic camera app so you then have to change it to the camera pro app yourself. A small thing but just one more step that we didn't have previously when the two were separate apps. I see no setting to change how it opens by default so if anyone else does...
On a positive note, I may be imagining a slight thing but I think quality has maybe improved fractionally. To be specific, everyone has raved about this phone taking RAW files that you can develop yourself ( even though I think most flagship phones do now ) but I have always found that indoor shots with this phone in RAW always require a tripod which means you are just as well getting your real camera out. The ISO has to be low otherwise there is so much noise that even tools in lightroom struggle to fix it. But I think I see less noise now in handheld shutter speeds in low light.
But thanks to OP for spotting this app & bringing it to our attention.
BTW, how does anyone know this is the app from Xperia 1 iii when it's not released yet? Is there information on Sony website?
Many thanks.

I always open the Pro app with a push on the camera button. The new Pro app can be configured to open in Pro mode when pressing the camera button, so it works great for me.
Thanks very much. Ye, I saw you can choose the default in new settings too. I'm enjoying the new app.
Good find. Works well on the Xperia 5II as well.

The is a setting for "Open in last mode used". Since I always use the Pro Mode that works for me.
After installing the APK, can't choose the photo pro as option with camera key.
What I need to do to choose the photo pro as default?
Had to remap power button gesture to use the photo pro app. Camera button does not have photo pro option after installing this APK

That's what I've done too, with button mapper app. Howerver, it does not work when screen is off for my non rooted device. Don't forget to set photopro bypass in button mapper when photopro is active.
Tap tap app is also an interesting option.
For now I removed the update and reverted to the original Pro app.

So the old PRO app was not able to be used wiht the front camera, right?
Is there a way how to downgrade to original Photo Pro w/o root? I fear the answer is no.
It seems this upgrade broke eye AF at least on 70mm camera. All pictures of my wife and daughter focused on eye are out of focus. . Also manual object tracking seems not to work at all.

Yes, it's easy. Go to settings, apps. Find the Photo Pro app in the list, click on it. From the menu, choose "remove updates". That's it.

I really hope that Sony will provide the new photo pro app on our device with the Android 12 update...
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/can-someone-dump-the-stock-camera-apk-pretty-please.4300387/ someone posted this IV used it on the 5ii works like if you hit camera button it opens the none pro version also has a wheel like basic mode this is from Xperia 1iii
If you want to open the new (Xperia 1/5 III) PhotoPro app with the camera button, even from locked screen, you can check my simple method here (since it's the same for Xperia 5II): https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/updated-camera-pro-app.4283199/post-85866439

Unfortunately, on our device Xperia 1II, this new photopro app tends to take photos out of focus...
