Is it possible to block an apps access to all sensors on my phone? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use an app called Torque Pro in the car to monitor all the vehicle sensors on my car via the OBD2 adapter, but Torque is also using my phones G-sensors, gyroscope, barometer etc constantly while it's open. Basically any phone sensor on my S5 G900F, it's using it all the time, but app permissions don't seem to give me an option to block this. Neither does the built in AppOps in my ROM. All I care about is my car sensors, not my phone sensors. I am currently trying to get a really efficient ROM and kernel setup in regards to battery life, but also want to be able to use my phone as normal and this needless access to my sensors would be a significant drain on the battery. Are there any apps/tools out there that can allow me to achieve this? I don't want to block all apps from accessing these sensors, just Torque's ability to constantly poll the sensors. tia

It is possible but you have to be rooted...

I am rooted. I found the sensor disabler xposed app, but that seems to disable all apps from accessing the sensors. It is however considered a Tasker plugin so I could probably make a script to only block sensors when Torque is running. I thought it would be part of the OS's app permissions as a rogue app could still get beneficial information from the sensors unrestricted.

Well HTC Sense has a built in locator, just sign into your Sense account and it was auto update your phones location. Just go to HTCsense.com and you can see it on a map.

You could try "Wheres my droid" from the market place, it doesn't utilize root but it will locate your you phone by sounding your ringtone or white noise, or even send you gps co-ordinates if lost or stolen.
Just txt your own number "GPS my Droid" to recieve gps co-ordinates or "Wheres my droid" turns up the volume if on silent and makes it ring for a set ammount of time, hopes this helps
Try "pintail"
I use Seekdroid to turn on gps remotely (requires access to the internet) and Wheresmydroid as backup just in case I can't access the internet.
It doesn't use root though and works well.
You can also push the app to system with root explorer I would use Droid lost. It's a good one. You grant it admin rights and control many many features from a website. It works real well. And by pushing to system most people would have a hard time unistalling it.

GPS is trying to fix 24/7 but I don't know why...Navigation and Map is off...help?

I did an update of many apps from market and every since then the GPS is always looking for a fix! I usually have GPS ticked so its ready when needed and stays off till I open an app that uses GPS such as Nav or map...
I havent opened any nav apps and map is also closed so why is the phone looking for a GPS fix all the time? It drains my battery...
Anybody have a clue..?
Looks like an app may have put GPS on by default when it updated. Are you rooted?
of course, I'm using primarily the EU_Shooter_rooted rom and cobra if I want a moded rom.
I've looked at quicksysteminfo and task manager but can't find the bad app...it's not showing itself
may be your rom have some problem
You can install LBE Privacy Guard and set apps to prompt you before accessing permissions such as Gps to get a better handle on what apps are doing what.

Thanks for the tip, I installed LBE Privacy Guard...Immediatly found two apps which both want a gps fix and they both want my "obtain IMEI number", how freaky...
I disbaled gps and internet for both.
What would they want with my IMEI and gps coordinates?

Either for compatibility, statistical, or just to have to track you.

[Q] Disable Location set by GPS Notification

As stated. I am using anti theft software that forces my phone to switch on wifi and GPS but as soon as it does I get that message telling me something is using my GPS etc. This looks suspicious to a potential thief in my opinion so I want to know if there was anyway at all I could remove or disable this pop up
This sounds like an issue you should ask the app developer.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
It's not an app issue though. It's an ICS notification warning you that something is using your wifi/GPS - 9/10 times this is a good thing. However there must be a way to remove it exactly the same way AOKP have removed the keyboard one
Well. I have found out that Cerberus (Another anti theft app) somehow disables this message shortly after it is displayed. However I prefer to use PhoneLocator Pro and that is the problem app for me. I contacted the developer and this is the reply
Hello !
This issue is because of your custom ROM you are running.
This is not happening in all the ROM's and you should ask developers of this rom how this issue can be fixed - maybe there is a way to disable this.
I will document myself on this, but I don't know if this can be fixed - even if you are saying that Cerberus doesn't have this behavior . Cereberus might be using a hack to turn on the GPS, a hack which I don't want to use cause Google is watching and these things can ban your app from the Play store.

[Q] App for spinning class?

Does anybody know of any apps that will have compatibility with the samsung watches for spinning/cycling class? The current cycling app is completely useless because there is no option for stationary cycling, it just keeps searching for your gps movement which of course there is none. For example the "spinning indoor cycling" app on the play store has compatibility with tons of HR monitors but for some reason samsung is not one of them???
I use the running mode for step class and zumba. Maybe it would work for spin as well.

you could do what my wife does and attach it to your ankle, and put it on running, she says its decently accurate that way, by decently she says better then nothing.

Aggressive doze kills GPS (app)

Hi,
when using aggressive doze on a rooted Nexus 4 with Android 6.0.1 in my GPS tracking app (I tried several), even though whitelisted, the tracking stops after a few minutes.
The apps still show as tracking thus I suspect the GPS itself gets killed and provides no signal/values anymore.
Is it a bug or a feature?
Thanks for the great work

Uninstall Greenify and check.
If I disable aggressive doze it works.
If I uninstall the app too of course.
This is a limitation of the doze mode itself enforced by Android. I'm afraid there's no way to workaround that.
A new Tasker plug-in is added in 2.9.5 beta 1 to toggle Aggressive Doze. Hope this could do some help here.
Ah no problem, I thought it might be something like this. I'll just disable aggressive doze while using the app.
The tasker plugin would do this automatically for me, did I get this right?

Shouldn't it be enough to disable "Doze on the go" to maintain the gps sensor on?
I have this same problem, and the only way to allow a foreground sports tracking app to access the gps data is to disable both "Agressive doze" and "Doze on the go"...

No. As someone tested before, the stock Doze also disables GPS.
Hello,
I had the same behaviour. I tested something this morning : added to whitelist my navigation app + LocationServices + FusedLocation.
And while I was on the road, the gps worked till I arrived. In the agressive doze log I see that the device did'nt went in Doze during that time.
Don't know if this is directly related, I'll give it another try tonight.
Didn't work tonight, lost gps signal. Something else prevented doze this morning.
Will give a try to the beta and the toggle.
Any news on the subject? I get GPS signal lost while using maps...

I'm now using the beta + Tasker to prevent doze when my navigation apps are on. Works great.

You should probably re-enable aggressive doze with an exit task. This does not seem to be one of those system settings that will auto restore when the task terminates. Also note that this profile will not trigger if Maps or your GPS app is in the background. I am debating whether aggressive doze is worth the hassle.
I've been having the same issue for a while. I use Locus Maps to record tracks on airplanes (so it may run for 12hrs) and it turns off GPS. Sometimes its hard to tell if its lost because of Doze or I simply lost the signal.
Also, it is plugged into a power source (charging) so I believe Doze should be disabled while charging.
I see above mention of "Tasker". What is this?

The simple solution is to avoid aggressive doze which is tagged 'experimental' and is known to cause some odd device/radio/app behaviors.

I'm sorry, I should have clarified. I was broadening to Doze itself as I thought I read that it will also disable GPS (but not as fast or "aggressively").
My behavior has been a little different. I notice that if I run maps navigation at the same time as recording my track, there is no issue. but if I just record my track, then it not be able to prevent GPS from stopping.
Perhaps this should go in another forum, I'm just not sure which

Try running a GPS Status app (example) concurrent with your tracking app. Aside from helping to keep the GPS 'awake' most have a variety of useful features and functionality.
I have tried that but it does not seem to work. I'll have to check the GPS status options to see if there's something for keeping it awake.
I have noticed that if I run Navigation (not just Maps) in parallel, then the GPS will stay awake.

- as previously noted make sure Aggressive Doze is disabled as it can break cross-app/component communications
- also add you tracker app to 'white list' of you haven't done so already
- good chance Google Maps (any navigation app) is using wakelocks to keep GPS active
- assume all is well when you disable Greenify
- if true you many need to step away from Greenify or consider another app with similar functionality like Force Doze
