Looking for app to "return" to home screen (Bixby Key replacement) ... ? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: (I just realized this is the wrong forum for this posting. I didn't want to edit and have a blank post clogging up the forum so I left it... Mod's please move or remove this post as needed if not allowed here. Sorry)...
.
Good morning.
I am looking for a very simple, single purpose "app" that doesn't seem to exist
I want an app that simply returns to the home screen.
Reason:
I want to use my Bixby key on Galaxy S10 as "Home Button" (BUT):
I do not want to use button re-mappers as this is redundant and irritating.
(So that any phone's gesture or key settings that will load an "app" (but not an activity) can go to home screen without other monitoring or remapping software running).
The stock software already allows the remap of the Bixby button to a different "application" (Not activity), So I am in search of a small app that does just that - simply calls / loads / launches the home screen and closes. Period. I've read many people want the key as "back button" and a small app that does only "back" would be cool too. I wish I had time to SDK and tinker like I used to do with Windows :
Anyone know of such a thing, or willing to throw a paragraph of code into an APK for fun ? :fingers-crossed:
Thanks everyone...

[Q] change short press function Search button

Have searched extensively for this without finding a solution.
Problem: want to change SHORT press search button functionality to launch recent apps menu/chooser (which by default is assigned to long press home). I want to multitask faster, and don't want to wait on long press home. I only occasionally use long press search functionality, so I don't mind sacrificing it if necessary.
What i've found: lots of apps to change long press function. can edit the shooter-keypad.kl file located in /system/usr/keylayout, but as far as I can tell I can't assign the recent apps dialog in that file (see here and here - thanks JTNiggle).
Anyone able to help on this? Either an app that will do this, or know what file to edit?
thanks in advance. your reply, if even remotely helpful, will earn you a "thanks".
EDIT: one more thing. I know CM has this built in. I am using the ICS sense leak (MikVirgin 1.01) and am looking to get this functionality without changing ROMs (there is just some functionality I need sense for; leave it at that). this is not a sense vs CM thread. thanks.
nothing? quick bump for prime time.

[Q] Long press the home button....

When I long press the home button a semi circle comes up and Google is at the top, no other icons. Can I add different apps to this? I think I've been through every menu, I just got the phone yesterday and I am still working on it.
Thanks!

Short answer: not without modifying the firmware. There might be a custom firmware (or "xposed" module) that has this as a feature. (However, I'm not personally aware of anything on the HTC One M8 that does it.)
For future reference, single questions with shorter answers should be posted in the device's Q&A section, not the general section. (If it's an open question involving a lot of conversation, it might be okay in 'general.')
Take care

Remap App Switch To Menu

So ive been search around for a while now on how to fix this. And to anyone that chimes in and says why do you need the menu button obviously you don't use older apps, the new touch button on the screen is a huge annoyance especially since i've used my phones this way since my first S1. Regardless this is how i want it and so do many other people.
Currently this is only for a rooted phone
I have figured out how to remap the left soft key from the App Switcher/Multi window over to the old style menu key. Instructions for that can be found here
But now i don't have any way of switching to my currently open apps, after remapping the left key, the longpress now takes you to search. and long pressing on the home button also takes you to another variation of the search (both i dont use nor want). I want to be able to remap my left softkey on longpress to open up currently open apps (APP_SWITCH) and it would be nice if long pressing on Home could open the Task Manager as it did on my S3.
As far as i can tell editing of the longpress function is done via a Policy edit. Read about that HERE
Keep in mind that post is from 2014 so i have no idea if the internal code is still being handled the same way, i couldn't even find that file on my S6, but i did find a file called SEPOLICY in my root folder using ROOT EXPLORER. Do any of you know more about this and how I can go about changing this? im sure its a code level adjustment. Thanks
Long-press home button can be controlled without root easily.
Check out this app:

I use the long-press home to get to my last used app.
I wonder if I can remap my buttons to launch any other apps.. Will have to tinker around a bit.

very useful. menu for navigation is long long outdate. software nave or 3 dots is the customary way to go. adding a secondary menu button is redudant and unnecessary. my little ewww comment brought a lot to the table. you tryingt to call me out on it is less useful.

lol f off
If you guys use Dropbox, how do you get to the menu with SORT, etc.. without a menu key. This is making me crazy. I'm using nova launcher and there is no floating menu key. ????
The problem is if not every developer uses it, it's inconsistent.
It often helps if the options etc. In apps are on the top, so you don't have to fidget with your phone to reach the top or use two hands.
The menu button on every app is positioned somewhere else, so I find the op wanting it justified.
All in one gestures let's you remap every key, for some odd reason on my s4 I can remap the menu key, but on the S6 for some odd reason the option of the menu key has vanished in the same app:what:

Hi pal. Hope it helps. Make 254 button remap, then install nova launcher, in tab gestures select long press menu and then recent app. Profit! Now once tapped you have menu button, long pressed - recent apps.
So, i made it, i use it. It works.

Galaxy Tab S3 - Home Button Function

Hi,
Normally when we press home button of Samsung tab/phone it minimizes all the apps and takes us directly to home screen but for some reason when I press home button on galaxy tab s3 it opens google search and there is no way that I can minimize all apps at once.
can yo help me to change the function of home button.
Thank you.
Did you have any luck finding out how to stop the home button going to goggle assistant instead of home screen? I all of a sudden have the same issue and haven't found a solution on the web
It sounds like your home button might be sticking. Do you feel it snap back immediately after pushing it?
Hope you work it out.

There are several solutions in this thread that seem to have worked.
In order of the easiest:
1. A settings change, changing the delay for the google shortcut.
2. Remove battery (I know, not possible with the S3, but included for any phone users searching)
3. Clear cache
All of these fixes seem to have worked for various users who commented on a given fix. There are a lot of posts on that thread, many of them commenting on the fixes I've listed. I'd try one or more of these first, then read the rest of the thread if no joy.

Long press - double press - swipe up- etc. on home button (onscreen nav bar)

Dears members,
After long searches on this forum, i can't find the correct keywords for my request. My apologies if i'm not in the correct section. Let me try to explain what i'm looking for.
I would like to be able to customise the home button from my onscreen navigation bar (i have Samsung S8+) and do specific actions on this button (long press - double press - swipe up- etc.).
Actions could be: take screenshot, go back, go forward, launch application, launch shortcut, toogle option, etc.
Does it already exist apps that can perform this?
(I am not searching for an "edge launcher" application)
Many thanks for your help.
Manbboy
This is what everyone recommends, me personally I tried it, didn't like it... but give it a whirl

@wutangkillabee: thank you. I've already seen this app. Not used yet. I was expecting something else and easier to install. Any other suggestions?
There plenty of edge launcher applications.. and only one for nav bar launcher application ("Custom Navigation Bar") ?
You could try this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-custom-navigation-bar-customize-t3590967
@darksidesh007: this is exactly the same as @wutangkillabee suggested. Thanks anyway.
Other alternatives ?
Not that I kno of... But 4 you to accomplish this your going to have either root your phone or perform adb commands, really no other way around it
