Issues with dark scenes in movies - Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Questions & Answers

I have had my S6 for a few weeks now. When watching movies, either streaming or on the SD card, the screen has trouble with dark scenes, especially blacks. They get digitized and blocky with lots of noise. I have tried a few different apps. This did not happen in my Tab S 10.5 with the same source material. Anyone else see this?

Give us an example? What movie and which streaming service? Can't tell you anything helpful unless we are seeing the same thing you are.

You're not having a similar issue as this are you?

It doesn't look like that. I am being sent a replacement and hope I don't get one like that.

The assault scene in Zero Dark Thirty on SD card. It's 1080. The last episode of Watchmen via Xfinity streaming. This video as well https://youtu.be/JLT4Oz5XRbc.

Not noise or artifacts in the black when the Vegas sign was on?
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk

Well its normal that the blacks are compressed harder, thats the whole deal about compression, leaving out stuff you mostly dont see, thats why that dark GOT episode sucked with the highly compression streaming services.
Maybe the S6 is just showing it brighter than your other devices?

No. I still have it. Only got it last week - I'm not convinced it's a problem with the tablet. Like someone else said, could be down to compression - If I paint the screen black in a drawing app, I don't see any issues. It's not really an issue that'll bother me much if I'm honest.

I've noticed that to, its not just you. The blacks are not the rich high contrast dark that I am used to from my captivate. I'm hoping that we will get some color screen adustments once tweaked roms get cooked up.

So what do u guys think. Bad screens or software related?
Sent from the Almighty Note!
Netflix used to do the same on my iPhone. Its definitely not the screen.

So I'm not the only one noticing, great I think. Is there an actual fix in ics for this?
Software, not hardware. Known issue in the IGN.
I think maybe its the quality of stream that netflix uses cause when I play movies from my sdcard i dont notice it..
i always notice it though if the video res is really low.

I'm not in an LTE area but I have 30/5mb speeds with wifi. Netflix looks horrible still. I'm thinking that a lot of apps just weren't made for this size screen and a simple update will fix it.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
yes i think hiii is correct. the netflix app on 2.3 series does not scale with screen size i beleve it is kept at a low resolution and that is part of the blockyness.
Use the following Netflix.apk file attached. It'll solve all the resolution problems. I've been using it for 2 days now.
Note: Do NOT update the app after you install it, or it'll go back to the one that doesn't work well.

It works better than the updated one, but it's still sort of disappointing that it doesn't look as hd as I'd expect. Thanks for the temporary fix though!

on th note
My Netflix doesn't look bad. But we need to realize that....sure the International version has been out for a while, but is only now going mainsteam with the i717. That will make app developers take notice and start optimizing for the Note screen.

Screen issues?

Has anyone who tried out this phone tested it for the screen lines/blobs issue that the S2 had?
I would also like to know this too the yellow tint issue, and black blobs. I had the issue in both my SGS 2 black and White...though in galaxy nexus it was vey negligible but still there . I hope its not in SGS 3
There seems to be a pink tint rather than yellow tint.

Should probably wait a bit before buying this phone, who knows what the probability is.
Bump. People should know about this before buying the phone.
Most of the screen won't have tint problems . But still people can check the screen using lcd test code before taking it to home

Yup! I received my SGS3 yesterday, and after seeing this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658601 I checked the Iron man Pepper Kiss video on Youtube and I did not notice any problems!
The pixelization is sometimes caused by poor encoding.
I received the phone yesterday.
Did the LCD tests.
All tests are crystal clear. RGB backgrounds look like glass and the black videos are deep blacks without pixalation of any form.
I also checked another thread talking about some kind of pixels that were appearing as different colour and this didn't occur either.
The screen works perfectly and it does look gorgeous despite that pentile screen debate.
If a phone doesn't perform as described by me (and many many others) then the phone is simply defective and will be covered by DOA.
Bumb:cyclops: sorry

Recording in Slow Motion Looks really bad

I have seen a couple of videos on here where they were recorded in slow motion and those videos looked great, however, I have tried a few times and they always come out looking really bad. (grainy, and blurry). I have tried with all the settings left on auto and also setting things up manually as well (like white balance and ISO).
Is there settings that I am missing to make these videos look as good as they do while recording at normal speed?
Here is the link to the video I shot:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjcqQhUIJq0
Also does the camera not record in HD while doing Slow Motion?
I can't help you on making it look better but it doesn't record in HD. The ending resolution ends up being 768 x 432.

It's probably the light. I think the only reason it goes to HD on the youtube video is because the beginning part might be in HD. I still see the grainy lines on the youtube video and in the slow motion videos I shoot.

I think it's HD on YouTube because the user had to edit it on the computer. (Add music) so I think he saved it in a way that YouTube thought it was HD.
I've noticed that I have to edit files in order for YouTube to have a HD option even though the phone records in HD and saves it as a .MP4.

There is a camera setting. If you touch the "A" you will see the option

Yeah, the camera does not do HD for slow motion, due to the significantly higher data rates the camera must sustain to do slow motion. It's essentially recording at 120fps or so, which is four times the speed it would record at otherwise. To record in HD, it would require four times the bandwidth and processing power that it does at normal speed.
I've had this phone since it came out and never knew it has that setting.
What is "HDR"?

There are other phones using android that CAN do slow motion HD recording. I assume that this is a software limitation on HTC's part rather than a hardware limitation as the camera on this phone is quite impressive to say the least. Even with my limited knowledge of the inner workings of the android software I would venture to guess that this can at least be brought to 720p slow motion recording. However a speedier SD card may be needed. Man I wish I knew how to dig into Android, I want this camera to be BEAST!

A lot of grain and noise on videos and pictures

I've had my note for about two months. I came from the one x. One thing i don't like about the note is the grain and noise on dark pictures and video. Guess its just due to the amolded screen. I know being under good light will fix the ones you take but anything I can do to sharpen the image on videos and pics I'm browsing?

Are you referring to recorded videos only? Make sure to change the setting for video to 1080p because I'm pretty sure it's set to 720p by default. Hope that helps.

[Q] Brighness Issues with Note 2

I just got the Note 2 a few weeks and so far it's my favorite phone I've ever owned. I love the big screen, I use the S pen all the time and the battery is tremendous.
One thing that I'm not quite fond of is the screen brightness, specially when using Netflix.
I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this with Netflix but the brightness on the phone seems to be OK but as soon as I start playing something on Netflix it's really dim. I have the brightness turned all the way up and it still looks really dim.
The quality also isn't great either, it's like it's not playing in HD or something. I've tried connecting to 4G and Wi-Fi and it still doesn't always look so great.
Wondering if there anyone knows of a solution or a hack or something?
I watch a lot of Netflix on my phone and would love to solve this.
I am rooted and I'm using JellyBeans 21 ROM.
Thanks.
Try going back to stock ROM and check if the issue persists.
I noticed that beans rom has reduced brightness overall (cannot say for sure but that was what I felt comparing against stock)

Have you adjusted your quality levels on netflix.com yet? If your not worried about data or use wifi alot crank up quality settings on the site. Then reboot and fire flix back up. As the video buffers during play quality will slowly increase. Depending on your connection it should play pretty decent quality a minute or so into the video. And if you use mx player for your video files make sure you have mx brightness turned up. Im pretty sure mx settings are independent of system. Im also running 21 but I always use beans stock kernel. And even on the puter or xbox netflix Never truly hits HD.

If you do just remember one thing.
The AMOLED screen in our phones gets burn in if your not careful. the brighter the screen the quicker the burn in, at least thats what ive been told.
I have not seen any burn in on my phone, but I know people who are always at max brightness and you can see their status bar even in full screen apps because its burnt in...
