Recover - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone!
Due to finding no Ringtones to allot to my new email, and only a lot of files in that location, I stupidly removed the files to see if the ringtones would then appear. They didn’t”! I now seem to have deleted most of my photos in my Samsung Galaxy S4 Active mobile Gallery along with all the recorded data on my S Memo pages. And, probably, many other items that I have not yet discovered as missing!
I have downloaded an App called DiskDigger for photos. It has pulled up over 1,000 photos, some of which are duplicates or more. On wading through them and choosing an awful lot to restore, I am given the following choices where to restore them to - Bluetooth, Email, 3 named emails, Save as, Save to Drive, WhatsApp, WiFi Direct. However, once again I found a problem as I cannot move the number of my selected photos to the apps as there are too many chosen photos. I therefore took the second option and selected a named file.
That done, I found that they had ‘miraculously’ appeared in my Gallery! A further search and selection will, hopefully, repeat that.
I then downloaded an app that supposedly recovers documents named, strangely enough, 'Document Recovery'! It has recovered some documents which are proving a little difficult to open successfully to read. They go to a blank page after the indication that they are - 'Loading' - 'Opening' - then nothing!
I would also seek advice about a way to recover the details previously recorded on the S.Memory pages, if possible, (an app that works like a notebook where text etc can be written and saved.) and how to successfully open the documents recovered by Document Recovery and placed in an automatically named “All Recovered Documents” file.
Many thanks in advance for any advice!
Regards,
Colin.

A few issues

Hiya
Firstly, may I say what a great resource this forum is!! I've learnt a lot and I've only had the XDA for just under 2 months!
SMS storage, is anyone closer to finding out where this is stored? I have managed to locate the messages you send OUT in the windows\messaging folder, though it's only the actual text and doesn't contain any of the timestamped stuff etc. I cannot for the life of me find where the inbox for sms should be. I know others have had similar problems.
Cleartype, I have it enabled and it looks great, but it doesn't seem to appear everywhere. ie the Today screen. I did have a program (I think it might be Pocketblinds) but I found it unstable to the point where I would turn off the pda part, then back on again to find that the custom start menu icon had disappeared. Grrrr. Does anyone know a way to make cleartype effects appear on the today screen? I've tried putting a reg entry in various places of the registry for it but to no avail.
Also, if there is a way to bind together numbers and contact info for incoming SMS messages, presumably the same would apply for outgoing ones. Does anyone know of a program to do with sent items as sms_name by paragon does for inbox entries?
Thanks in advance
Anthony
in the database 'pmailFolders' lookup the desired foldername,
then open that foldername as a database.
these folders have names like 'fldr10019e7', these likely different
on each machine.
This may seem a stupid question, as I say I'm new to the XDA and hope to start writing programs for it soon (I've been a programmer for a while but not in this style)....
how do I open it "as a database"? I've tried going into Databases and selecting it but i cannot drag it to the desktop or open it in file explorer on the phone.
Cheers
Anthony
If you are interested in enabling celartype (any many other enhancements) you should check pocket facelift.

[app]Vault-Hide SMS ,Pics & Videos

Vault—the Ultimate in Privacy Protection
Vault hides your confidential SMS messages, contacts, call logs, pictures and videos. It’s the BEST app for Android users to hide SMS messages and call history from prying eyes! It keeps your private stuff hidden, giving you complete control over your privacy and security.
With Vault, you can:
1. NEW in 2.0! Monitor who’s trying to see what’s on your phone and photograph them in the act. This feature requires an Android 2.3 (or higher) device with a front-facing camera.
2. NEW in 2.0! Hide your photos and videos so only you can see them. They’ll be encrypted and only viewable in Vault when you enter the correct password.
3. Import your sensitive SMS text messages to Vault. Strong encryption and password protection ensures they’ll be hidden from everyone but you.
4. Make your private contacts invisible. Simply add a number to Vault and any calls or messages from this number will only appear in Vault. They’ll no longer appear in your phone's native SMS folder and call logs.
TIP: We recommend adding your most commonly used contacts to
Vault. If your phone is lost or stolen, you won’t have to worry about anyone accessing your contacts or messages.
5. Protect your real Vault by creating one or more “fake” vaults. If someone insists that you give them your password and display your secret messages, you can show them the “fake” vault. Problem solved!

This app lost all of my contacts that I stored in it and since it deletes them from your android contacts I can't get them back. Photo/video seems to work but definitely would not recommend this app for anything you wouldn't want lost.

Click to collapse
you must return to your settings before uninstall the app... i did the same mistake first time but my luck was that i chose to hide only the videos... so before uninstalling turn back to show contacts, videos, and other things that you selected to hide
I think you have a folder on your sdcard (the app folder) and there must be the things that you chose to hide.. cheek it
i have format my hp without backup my file on vault 1st...then after format i install vault back...my old file cannot open...please help me to recover back my file...
Does anyone know of an app that can actually hide other apps?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA Premium App
free cannot, premium may offer additional feature
Needs a file explorer. I have videos that I need hidden, but the app can't find them.
Help
I accidently cleared the Data of this app… I've reinstalled it, but it doesn't show the previous ones :'(
What should I do ?
I've searched that long time
Thanks a lot

[Q] Sync folder to <x> storage

Hey everyone,
I've been googling for many hours. I've been to many shady places. But I've come up empty handed.
I'm basically looking for an app, that can provide syncronisation between a folder on my device, and a folder on <insert cloud storage here>.
I'm personally trying to migrate away from Dropbox, of which I've been a heavy user for many years. But in the light of the recent NSA gate, I thought I'd take a look what else is out there. I've chosen MEGA, as they provide (on paper) the security I like, and enough storage for my cloud-storage-needs.
I've been using Dropbox to automatically store the images I've taken with my phone camera and I take a backup of my texts every night at 2pm, which is also, automagically, uploaded to Dropbox. The official MEGA app takes care of the first, but the latter is taken care of within the backup app itself. It can be disabled, though.
I've looked for sync apps, but neither those or apps like Helium doesn't support MEGA.
So dear XDA,
Is there hope for me?
ownCloud provides universal access to your files via the web, your computer or your mobile devices — wherever you are.
It also provides a platform to easily view & sync your contacts, calendars and bookmarks across all your devices and enables basic editing right on the web.

Media sorting problem on social media apps.

I have noticed this for the gazillionth time now that every once in a while (not sure whether a new app/system update triggers it) my media files (images and videos) are sorted in a messy manner within Instagram and other social apps. It's like when you want to send an image to a friend through Instagram inbox, and browse through the files, you see them arranged in a format whereby old stuff shows at the top and the newer pictures that you just downloaded are either somewhere in the middle (for which you have to initiate a search mission) or located at the very bottom. Either way this is frustrating and I am really looking forward to find a fix for this. It merits a mention here that the gallery app itself does not have this problem as all files are perfectly sorted in there but all social media apps (fb, insta, snap, twitter) mess up every now and then.
Highly anticipating a working solution!
Thank you.

Viber scoped storage (restoring images from Android 9 to Android 11)

I'm trying to move my existing Viber install from an old device to a new one. Both devices are rooted. I was able to transfer the app, message history, etc just fine via Swift Backup - but the one issue I'm running into is that all of the images are "broken."
The previous (source) device was Android 9, when Viber still stored all its media in /storage/emulated/0/viber. Now on Android 11 (I skipped Android 10), Viber uses scoped storage. However, even if I copy the original "viber" folder to the new device, it seems the new device no longer looks there for the images, thus they're broken in the context of the message thread.
Here's a blurb about their migration: https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2020/07/bringing-modern-storage-to-vibers-users.html. It sounds like on Android 10 they were still using the "viber" folder as "read-only", but it's unclear if it actually would've migrated the images into its scoped storage. When I moved WhatsApp to Android 11, it had an explicit option to migrate the data from its original storage/WhatsApp directory. Viber seems to have no such option. So the obvious solution should be to just find where Viber now stores its media, and manually move my images there from the old "viber" folder.
However, the oddest thing, I cannot for the life of me find where they should be.
The most obvious candidates are /storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.viber.voip or /storage/emulated/0/Android/media/com.viber.voip - however, when I receive images in the new app, I cannot find any evidence of them in either place. I also checked /data/data/com.viber.voip, and likewise, I don't see the received images there. The article above says "Private media files are stored in the app-specific directory on external storage", which I think means it should be storage/emulated/0/Android/data/com.viber.voip/files, but the only thing in there are "User Photos" - which are basically my contacts avatars. It seems like they *have* to be in one of those 3 spots though, because if I backup with SwiftBackup, uninstall Viber, go on airplane mode, restore with SwiftBackup, then check Viber, the images are accessible - meaning it must be reading them from the local device, and not remotely.
So all that is to say - where on earth is Viber now storing its images, and can I manually restore my old /storage/emulated/0/viber images to that location all my media in my message history isn't broken?
