Updated Guide for Project Treble/GSI installing with KVT -- Install (almost) any ROM - Moto Z2 Play Guides, News, & Discussion

ABOUT VERSIONS OF kvt:
2.x is if you're coming from stock Oreo or Pie
3.x seems to be only for stock Pie (otherwise networks don't work) - Oreo modem still has to be flashed though
There is a guide for GSI, but it is outdated, no longer maintained and all links are dead. That's why I'm creating this up to date guide.
If you do not know, what is Project Treble and GSIs, google it first. Proceed only if you know what are you doing. This guide is only for those, who know what is bootloader, fastboot, recovery and TWRP. If you don't, learn that first. There are many guides (for example guides for rooting and Magisk) UNLOCKED BOTLOADER REQUIRED
Guide
1) Download needed files:
- treble recovery: https://mega.nz/#F!b8RgGQCa!48TRsDcJFpaAGNOcc9Fb-A?GxR2TCAA
(this is my mirror, as original links are dead, don't know who is the original developer)
- kvt (find lastest version here) https://androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=303096&sort_by=date&sort_dir=DESC (developer deivesj)
(this allows GSI to work on Moto Z2 Play with some of it's stock features like fingerprint gestures, device gestures, pass safety-net and more)
- if you want to use Android 9.0 Pie based ROMs and older, you might want to use V7 kvt instead:
https://mega.nz/#!7w5V1KpQ!uoCMqynn5D83trvZ6uXY30S8b9rLiBlXf1JTeMYQ0rc
- if you are coming from stock Android 9.0 Pie ROM, you will need modem from Android 8.0 Oreo
https://mega.nz/file/mxhxXCaI#nJpdQ3nPnc6urkYP8vLrVb_vc_7EsnXK7MXw3U1xohw
- you may need stock recovery https://mega.nz/#!XphFEIxK!yNdHJSakfO90K1ua92SODoqd85nvwRi7h65EA8RkOuI
-GSI of your choice (links below)
transfer kvt to your phone to external microSD, keep the rest in your PC
1) go to fastboot mode (power+volume up simulaneously)
2) flash treble recovery (using fastboot command: fastboot flash recovery 'filename.img')
3) boot to recovery and wipe system, data, cache
Note: after boot to recovery, touchscreen doesn't work. Turn screen off and on to make it work!
4) in recovery, flash kvt zip. It will guide you through
5) reboot back to bootloader
6) flash chosen GSI as system image (fastboot flash system 'filename.img')
7) if you are coming from stock Pie, flash Oreo modem (fastboot flash modem NON-HLOS.bin)
reboot
Note: If you are coming from stock ROM, decryption may fail. The easiest way is to temporarily flash stock recovery. After decryption fails, it will prompt you to reboot and format data. TWRP can't do it, but stock recovery can. After you are booted, you can flash TWRP again.
Where to get GSIs:
the biggest list is here: https://github.com/phhusson/treble_experimentations/wiki/Generic-System-Image-(GSI)-list
For Z2 Play, always download arm64 version and Aonly
There is a folder with ported stock ROMS (MIUI, Samsung, Moto...) on mirrors.lollinet but they do not work on Z2 Play. I also tried various stock ROM ports from other sources and they did not work. Custom ROMs fork fine.
Magisk:
Standard Magisk versions may not work. If you get bootloop, after installing Magisk, flash uninstaller. Then you can try phusson's version:

Magisk 20.x: https://sourceforge.net/projects/expressluke-gsis/files/Extras/phh-magisk-ten/
I am currently using Pixel Experience Plus (Android 10) GSI, I installed it with latest KVT 2.6 and most stuff works out of the box. If you come from Stock Pie you need to flash the modem file from Stock Oreo to get proper audio during calls, as the modem from Android 9 gets bugged on Custom ROMs breaking the audio during calls. http://www.mediafire.com/file/q8nbpybxc8mjyew/NON-HLOS-Z2P-STOCK-8-OREO.7z/file

Confirmation
Mate can u confirm whether this kvt fix the screen flickering issue when there are more than 3 notifications in the status bar and does it have fingerprint gestures enabled???

I don't use fingerprint gestures so I can't tell you about that. Also I had experiencing some crashes and reboots with this GSI lately, so I will try with another one once I can access internet to download anothet GSI.

CONFIRMED
i confirm it by flashing the flickering issue is gone and the gestures works as well this is by far the most stable KVT released kudos to developers

There are new versions of kvt available. Check the updated first post for link to deivesj's last files.
I did not experience any flickering or other graphical glitches with the new (2.X) versions of kvt (unlike the old v8 one).
Fingerprint gestures work, but not in all gsis

Thanks, I will update the guide

Could someone please give me a mirror of kvt v2.6? androidfilehost is terribly slow...

Hello,
Seem to have lost my network after flashing the pixel experience gsi from stock. imei missing as well. Any help?

It may be problem with modem.
What was your stock ROM? 8.0 or 9.0?
What version of kvt did you use? 2.x or 3.x?

How install?
how is the modem installed?

It's explained in the guide, step 7.
Wrongly flashed modem may cause WiFi, Bluetooth and SIM not to work

Kvt link is down. But you can use LineageOS with treble support now

H850 Oreo flash/Magisk fix?

Anyone have any solution for the flash to work with magisk?
If i uninstall and install SU my flash will work?
Replace the kernel with the MK2000, flashing it with TWRP after Magisk, and the flash will be back.

It's still a beta version, but on my phone is working perfectly.
You can find it here, in the same thread of the Nougat version: h850 mk2000 kernel
I installed the kernel and after magisk again but the flash light is not working again.
I get the same error.
I have to wipe everything again?
Never mind i just flashed mk again without flashing magisk again and its working.

I get the same problem.
After flashing TWRP I do this:
don't wipe Data, but "format" data (you have to type "yes" to delete encryption)
intall Magisk-v17.1.zip
install xposed-v90-sdk26-arm64-beta3 (optional)
install driver Adreno 530 rev21 non treble (optional)
install as last zip: KERNEL MK2000 v1.0 Beta5 (for OREO)
reboot system
now flashlight works fine.
So installing "no-verity-opt-encrypt" (DM-verify) is not necessary.
P.S.
I was on Fulmics 5.5 (stock 7.x) with unlocked bootloader, the correct twrp flashing for me was this:
with LGUP
flash kdz android 7.x (flag on refurbish) (I tried upgrading directly to 8.x, but the G5 was gone in bootloop)
flash kdz android 8.x (flag on upgrade)
(the bootloader still remain unlocked, so you have not flash unlock partition with unlock.bin file)
Phase 2
Boot, skip all settings, Enable Developer, enable Debug USB and accept request permissions etc...
open ADB and type
reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img
don't reboot!
remove cable, remove battery, reinsert battery
power on in recovery mode (correctly, or you have to return at Phase 2)
double yes for reset factory (to enter in recovery)
you should enter in TWRP recovery
Is there any way to fix the "flashlight" bug with the stock kernel, still with the stock recovery
and rooting with Magisk by patching the boot image beforehand and flashing it in fastboot ?
I tried using the mk2000 kernel, but no img image is provided for this, only a zip,
but I don't want to root by using TWRP and flashing zips.
Why, I want systemless root, in case OTA updates will appear.
Thank you.
Even though I'd really suggest you to install TWRP permanently (if you accidentally enter in the stock recovery, the whole internal memory gets erased permanently), you may try to install Magisk from TWRP and then flash again the stock recovery.img using fastboot.
By the way, the Magisk zip is systemless: it doesn't flash executables on the system partition; it's just packed as a zip file for convenience to be easily read by TWRP.
On the other hand, if you want both original kernel and Magisk with a working flashlight, you can't. Flashlight with Magisk only works with MK2000 kernel at the moment.
It's new version mk2000 kernel v2.0 stable version from 04 January 2019, for Oreo try it. I want to unlock BL and make root, pls tell us it is flash work ? Sorry for my English.
Wysłane z mojego LG-H850 przy użyciu Tapatalka
I din't try the latest version, but I'm currently using mk2000 with unlocked bootloader and Magisk, and everything (both root and flash) is ok.
Edit: I now have the latest version of mk2000, and I can confirm everything is ok.
My flashlight and camera flashlight are not working too. I have to back read just in case I am not the only one with the same problem. I see there is a lo of suggestion and I tried it and it worked like a charm. I used H850_v1.0-mk2000 to make it work.

Unable to install Oreo GSI ROMs

Hello. I have an unlocked G8342, and I'm trying installing phh's GSI. But after I flashed the system image, I cannot boot my phone. It just shows "SONY" and then rebooted automatically.
I tried flashing the SW_binaries_for_Xperia_Android_9.0_2.3.2_v5_yoshino.img or SW_binaries_for_Xperia_Android_8.1.6.4_r1_v16_yoshino.img.
Before I unlock my phone, I've upgraded to the official Pie release. But what I'm installing is Oreo. Does this matter? Or what should I do in order to make it work?

if u dont backup ur TA partition before unlocking your bootloader, camera will not work on oreo gsi roms. I recommend u can try pie gsi roms, but it has worse camera quality and stability issues..

what gsi rom are you trying to flash? Do you have TWRP installed? I have a SOV36 (Japan AU version) and it boots with most of all gsi's. Currently using omni rom.
Here is my steps for flashing.
1. boot into twrp
2. goto wipe and factory reset (don't wipe data, system or cache just factory reset)
3. flash img
3a. optional: goto wipe; repair and resize system (if you want gapps)
4. flash gapps
5. flash magisk if you want root
6. reboot
Hope this helps

I have tried the Phh's latest 9.0 GSI and RR's GSI and ERFAN's Q GSI and the official q GSI from Google.
None of them work, all stuck on the Sony boot logo

latest RR gsi did not work for me either but roms like omni, bootleggers, lineage 16 all booted on my SOV 36
Flash the lastest pie ftf, then follow sinkoo1979, instructions, also be sure you only flash ARM64-A versions.. I know Omni, Bliss and bootleggers work with imo bootleggers was the nicest but the unofficial one here has ceased development.. Use open camera for your pics...
The Roms are a hit or miss...make and keep a twrp backup handy...

[NEWBIE] Root questions - not sure because of language problems

I would certainly like to root my Poco F1. However, after reading loads of topics, I'm still not sure of which way to choose, because I have a bit of a problem with the jargon.
I want the face unlock to be working
I want to get rid of MIUI and have clean Android (for example Smart Lock doesn't work with MIUI)
I want to use gestures to navigate through the phone
Hence, I am probably looking for a custom ROM?
If I understand correctly, I need to:
Unlock the bootloader, then flash TWRP, then flash the custom ROM, then flash Magisk... and everything is done (?)
If I want to revert to stock ROM, I will just wipe everything, am I right?
Would these custom ROMs do?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/poco-f1/development/rom-pixel-experience-t3857076
https://forum.xda-developers.com/poco-f1/development/rom-nitrogen-os-beta-t3857557
Thank you all!
You need to flash the appropriate vendor as well. You can find the list of vendor firmwares for download here:
downloads. akhilnarang .me/MIUI/beryllium/
Most custom roms require a specific requirement for vendor. I'd recommend flashing the latest vendor, it shouldn't cause issues.
Magisk flashing isn't a necessary step, unless you prefer root access. Make sure to back up your data because your phone will get encrypted on first boot and all your data will be lost, not to mention the data loss during bootloader unlock. You can use force encryption disabler to disable encryption. But note that you will have to flash the zip every time you flash a new ROM/vendor or else it will get encrypted again.
Also. Pixel experience is a good ROM for stock android experience, but I would recommend lineage OS unofficial over it because of the customisation it provides. I haven't used Nitrogen OS in a long time, so I cannot judge on it.
PS: don't forget gapps. Custom ROMs don't have gapps included.
Let's correct a few things in kishore1998's post. First since the OP needs to unlock his bootloader, when he does that he'll lose all data. OP, if your data is important, backup to an external source before you start. After unlocking you'll need a recovery as stated before. Next is flashing vendor/firmware. After that , flash the rom of your choice. In it's OP it should tell you whether you need gapps or not. PE doesn't require gapps. Reboot, make sure all is fine then go back into recovery and flash Magisk. I'm on vendor/firmware 9.5.6, PE-AOSP-20180507 & Magisk 19.1. NOTE: I don't use DFE nor do I need it. You only need DFE if you want an unencrypted fone. If you do flash DFE, everytime you flash vendor/firmware your _next_ step is to flash DFE. TWRP allows you to stack zips to flash so you'll choose vendor/firmware and DFE, then flash before doing rom and gapps if needed. See this link which has a useful FAQ.

hey bro . you should first unlock bootloader with miunlock .you need waiting 66 hours . after that download developer rom (pejmimx) rememeber that most be pejmimx, search in google and download the final version. install twrp with minimal adb if your poco didnt connect to your pc in fastboot mode you need to change your pc (just once time ) . flash data system cache davlik (you should have micro sd or conect flash memory with otg to your phone). install rom dev pejmimx. install your favorite custome rom . install magisk and done .(donot install oxygen os because that is ported from one plus 6t and have much bugs) my suggest is crdroid rom

There are a lot of guides here that describe the things you want.
Some checkpoints:
-Unlock your bootloader and install twrp (all personal data will be deleted)
-make a backup of your phone (when you backup check all partitions and images). This is your original system in case you want to go back. There's no particular reason to get more.
-install a custom ROM (crdroid that was suggested above is great imho) FOLLOW THE ROM'S INSTALLING INSTRUCTIONS TO THE COMMA.
-install nano-gapps and above if you want face unlock (pico and micro won't have it)
-flash magisk if you want root (don't forget to install magisk apk after flashing it)
-last but not least regardless of what's mentioned anywhere use official twrp and DON'T flash encryption disabler. It's just going to make your life harder without any benefits whatsoever.
Thank you, very helpful and assuring!
One more thing though - I often use dual boot of some apps. This is a Xiaomi-only feature; Does that mean with a different ROM (but for a Xiaomi device) I will lose this possibility?
I mainly just want to get rid of the MIUI ballast that interferes with the clean Android, so if there is a possibility to keep the ROM and delete MIUI, it would be maybe even better (?)

Procedure for flashing GSI roms (LineageOS)

Hey guys, I'm trying to install LineageOS GSI (arm64 A/B) on my Mi A3 and seem to be having some trouble getting the GSI to actually boot successfully.
I have already done my research both on XDA and elsewhere online, yet most threads focused on the device seem to be of little to no use and/or filled with spam replies that only serve to confuse people looking into this.
A quick note regarding the aforementioned threads:
I don't mean to sound disrespectful to the community, but honestly, bashing somebody over why they'd rather install anything but your own fav piece of software is completely ridiculous.
Without further ado, my case goes as follows:
I'm starting fresh with the latest stock firmware, after having unlocked my bootloader ofc (critical too), I've successfully installed TWRP, wiped, installed the system image and yet after rebooting I'm just greeted with good ol' Fastboot, at which point I either directly flash the stock firmware and try again or wipe my data and whatnot (through TWRP, if reinstalled) and still end up with Fastboot.
Therefore, I have to ask you guys:
Has anyone previously successfully installed any GSI rom on the Mi A3?
Did you flash the system img while on stock firmware or a previously flashed custom rom (ie Pixel Experience)?
Is there any need for any special patch similar to the ones used for MIUI based Xiaomi phones?
Did you face any other issues while trying to flash a GSI?
My intention is to eventually install microG using Nanodroid.
Thanks for asking. I was trying to flash Havoc, crDroid and MSM-Xtended Android 10 GSIs but I can't boot the phone.
I have flashed lots of GSIs in the past, but this is really intriguing me, I can't boot on Mi A3. Wiping or formatting data does not solve, neither Permissiver or Disable Dm-verity zips did the job... :crying:
I successfully bootet the LineageOS GSI yesterday. I was not coming from stock though. I think this process should work assuming you already bootet to TWRP:
1. flash the GSI image to system partition using TWRP
2. flash the TWRP installer to keep your recovery
3. (not sure if needed) flash no fde patch
4. optional: flash some other stuff like Magisk and gapps
5. wipe data and dalvik
I think it rebooted to recovery on my first try but worked after flashing everything again. I probably made some mistake on my first attempt but just make sure to try again before giving up.
Also there's this tutorial but it's not at all what I did to get it working:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a3/how-to/tutorial-flash-custom-rom-mi-a3-t3977169

No access to stock roms

I am still not able to install latest lineage without bootloop see here:
see older xda thread
so this weekend I thought well give it a last try before selling my unlocked H850 on ebay. I want to flash it back on stock rom and do the whole process again - maybe flashing this time a different custom rom(15.1 unofficial).
The problem is it seems stock rom is no longer available.
See here
LG-H85010E-Flashable.COMPLETE.zip -> download speed is very slow and I wasn't able to finish download successfully (always connection errors )
H85010e_00_OPEN_EU_OP_0817.kdz -> get no access to this file (has LG stopped service?)
can be closed solution was first flashing Android 8 stock rom with uppercut (H85030f_00_OPEN_EU_OP_1122.kdz) than flashing custom rom based on Android 9 (lineage-16.0-20200811-X86CPU-h850 - thank you to the author) and than I was able to flash official lineage 17.1 than bootloop was suddenly fixed. Each time after flashing I just did normal wipe (confirming with yes).
official tutorial completly sucks:
https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/h850/install
-> sideload is not necessary and when you come from older Android Version you have to flash Lineage 16 before (no evidence and no image in download section).
