How does this phone's audio DAC compare to something like the Spectra USB C DAC? - LG V60 ThinQ Questions & Answers

I'm thinking about getting this phone purely for the audio DAC but there are things about the phone itself that are disappointing. I used to have an LG V30 and enjoyed the audio quality it provided, but I felt that the cameras were awful especially the front facing one and the display was underwhelming. I've been reading similar reviews about this phone. Underwhelming display and cameras so my question is...if anyone has had experience with the Spectra USB DAC dongle, how it fairs to what LG provides in their phones?

That's not what I'm talking about.
Audio still goes through Android mixer.
The extension trick actually makes the audio worse.
Many threads on this. Look in the V30 threads.

I also noticed the volume is not as loud, audio quality is good, but not nearly as good as my V30's.
I am also unable to find anywhere, as to exactly what Quad DAC they put in the V60...

I am also having issues, with 352.8kHz FLAC audio...

I disagree. At least for me are V60 miles ahead of V30. Just upgraded from V30 and V60 really shines with my Custom Art.Ei.XX. Soundstage, separation, tonality exceedes V30 by far.

Many thanks for the reply.
The sound with a set of Bose in ear head phones is phenominal.
It's not exactly at Galaxy S with Voodoo Sound levels, but it's definitely above average. Just make sure you've turned the sound enhancements off.
I use Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 IEMs on the go, and the good old Grado SR60i's at home.

Much better than my old sgs2. Tested with both Sennheiser HD555 (high impedance large supra aural) and Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5 (low impedance small iem).
It drive the senn without problem. With sgs2 i need my small fiio amp to obtain good result.

Have some Rocketfish BT headphones and use PowerAmp. The sound quality is great.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
I have never heard an ATRIX, but I found that RAZR's sound is pretty good (Ultimate Ears TripleFi 10). As said above, it is nothing like Galaxy S's Wolfson with voodoo sound, but it is AWESOME in comparison to Galaxy SII ****ty Yamaha DAC.
I sold my Galaxy SII specifically due to it's ****ty DAC, build quality and useless GPS. Razr is pretty slow and has a ridiculous screen panel (mine come with 1 dead pixel), but at least it's build quality is a thousand times better than any Samsung's phone. Oh, point to RAZR's GPS, it is insanely fast and powerful.
Well, I hope we get soon a nice ROM that sends all motorola **** to hell and unlocks the RAZR's true power.
Good luck with your RAZR.

Compared to the Galaxy S II, yes, it is noticeably slower.
Although I didn't find the S II's GPS useless, the RAZR is better in that regard, and I'd say it's the GLONASS support that does it.
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
I didn't even noticed that razr has glonass... And I must say: this russian thing rocks. GSII gps may not be useless, but it is still worse than a lot of other cellphones.
In terms of speed, razr's boot is the thing that is really annoying and makes me sad when I remember GSII extremely fast boot. At least, when everything is loaded up there's no pain in razr usability.
I think that razr's slowness is a bit due to moto**** bloatware, but specially due to worse access speed between RAM and OMAP, when in comparison to GSII RAM and Exynos. I would suggest slower flash memory, but it seems that razr's flash can be even faster in some cases. I haven't any conclusive data to this hypothesis, but based on what I know, seems to be razr's slowness reason.
Well, razr is pretty new in market yet, so there is still hope for us in getting a better software, giving us a faster phone.
Think you've hit the proverbial nail there. Moto make lovely hardware, but the software on the RAZR is rather...odd.
Although if what I've heard is true, the RAZR was rushed to get product on shelves for Christmas, and was intended to ship with ICS - both the hurried gingerbread port from the Bionic/Droid 3 flavour of Blur and the decision to release a 'GSM variant' when both the XT910 & XT912 (appear to) have exactly the same hardware with locked down radios were apparently last minute changes. Or so rumour would have it.
On the Samsung front, the Note has GLONASS support and benefits enormously from it, so that should be the end of their positioning woes going forward.

I am wanting to know how it sounds through a pair of quality earphones with a good music player, preferably play Flac's.
The Atrix is very good but I wanted a larger screen. The razr ticks most boxes but I didn't want to take step backwards in the quality of music reproduction.
Can you shed some light?
just want to share with what I noticed today.was at a local shopping center, saw a stall selling mobile accessories, they have a casing for razr, which they claim improves sound from the tear speaker.I tried it on, honestly utter improves sound quality.
What it does is that it has some tunnels running around on the inside of the casing, enabling the sound waves to propagate to appropriate exit points, resulting in surrounds like sound.. It actually works.. But the price tag its ridiculously high.. So I did not buy it.. anyone else saw this housing? Some weird China brand.. Can't seem to find or on internet.

I have Razr, Atrix and Defy and I find they all have very close and decent sound(through jack), unless you use dollar store head phones, you might well be plugging into your butt. Speaker phone and ear piece, another story.
When I first listened to the razr with my Grado SR80i headphones, I was rather disapointed. After that, I found out the phone had some ****ty equalizer turned on for headphones. Once I turned that off, it sounded fine.

Cool, but which one has the edge, Atrix or Razr? Which do you prefer to use to listen to on a more regular basis?
Ta
Okay, i cant give the edge to either. Both are about the same volume maxed out and neither has more lows or highs than the other. I just blast my ears for 10 mins doing various hot swaps, and prolonged listening, to one intense orchestral song with some serious tones. This was a side by side, with same headphones, and eq options off using stock motoplayer with both set to volume one notch from full. I am not a bat or dog, but perhaps they could hear the diff.

Legitimate Audio Upgrade of the S2

First off I take ZERO credit for this but after stumbling upon this on XDA today in another thread I searched high and dry and couldn't find a post about it specifically so I figured I'd post it here.
I know everyone is going bananas over the Beats thing recently and while it seems to be more an EQ than anything else I can tell you supercurio (who deserves the credit) made a nice gem for us.
For those in the know, Samsung screwed us S2 guys dropping the Wolfson chip for the Yamaha chip and it seems now Voodoo is available for the S2
I'm big into home audio (esp. headphones). I've tested so far on my ear buds (Denon AH-C560R) but most importantly my higher caliber headphones (Sennheiser HD600 and Denon AH-D7000) and this upgrade to the entire driver not only gives the headphones a higher volume output but also adds some "oomph"
It certainly has limitations as a phone compared to my other sources but it's a substantial improvement in not only sound quality but also volume.
There's NO distortion or clipping that I've noticed yet. I'm playing notorious culprit type tracks for that (hard trance/rap). Everything is a joy with this.
Once again kudos to supercurio for this and everyone else enjoy. Lastly, you NEED TO BE ROOT for this to work.
I'm running it on a custom ROM no problem (UnNamed)

It's better than Volume+ in that you don't get distortion or clipping at high volume levels. That's the beauty of this program. I've been playing with a lot of higher-end headphone as I've mentioned above and there is a difference when switching to this audio driver.
It's certainly no high-end source (the S2) but it makes it more tolerable of a device than without it.
Just bought it, and it sounds great!

Ah bummer. Although the sound through the dock isn't that bad
Purchased and tested- doesn't improve quality of sound, just overall decibels. Great for headphones, not necessary if you're using an amplifier.
Great find, could even help the hard of hearing...
just downloaded it, I like the added volume but I wasn't able to use the +6db (due to a bit of bass distortion) with my powerbeats listening to Drake. The +4db sounds amazing though, will definitely like the added volume while in the gym. Good recommendation!

I had quite the opposite of whathifi. I felt the g2 sounded warmer than the s3 (possibly why they think its laid back). Had better bass texture/response and did have a bit more clarity up top. Overall they were both very similar but the g2 felt a bit more in your face vs the s3 (which is not very laid back).
These differences were very small. I believe the international version has a wolfson dac. If that was what they were comparing then its possible what they are saying is true.
Thing is they don't list what that used to test the equipment with.
if you want to tailor the sound , try using viper4android. It really makes a huge difference in sound quality. you can also use correction filters for your specific headphones. You wont be disappointed.:good:

I think the reviewer was talking about iPhone. There are definitely some aspects I like better than GS3, the warmth, etc. The main thing I noticed missing was transparency in treble. I have been listening with RE0s lately and cymbals etc are just extraordinary with my (Wolfson) S3. Good with G2 but not magical. But I need to sit down with the two of them side by side and listen.

That would make more sense. I was trying to a/b my s3, g2 and my home headphone setup. I know its easy to get confused when a/b'n with no time off for your ears to adjust but the g2 was sounding nearly as layered and textured as my canamp and micro dac. Had me worried but i know that was just from going back and forth.
I have yet to really listen to my g2. They did sound nice with my 701s, though. Made snare hits sound more natural. I"ll have to spin them with my GR07s.
I have had only other other Android phone to compare with the G2, plus our Sansa Clip+. I use the Neutron Music Player app which has its own audio driver, runs on Neon, 64 bit, parametric equalizer et al. With good/VG quality headphones (Grado SR 60), the G2 sounds fine to me. The headphone volume output is similar to the other Android phone I had previously. We GR owners can also stream out the music through the USB OTG to a DAC, car sound system with USB input, AV receiver with USB input.
While I agree the clarity is beyond any other android phone I've owned I find the sound to feel rather compressed. I have the verizon version so I'm not sure if there are any differences there but so far I'm disappointed after reading great reviews.

Best of Android 2016 – Audio (Axon 7's not so good score)

I suggest giving the kernel that @freeza developed a try. Then report DAC Noise.
Usually AA does good articles. Article is good but can't trust the number. Axon 7 having the worst dac??? Galaxy s7 beating it quality wise? Impossible. I came from an s7 and that thing sounded horrendous. My hugest dislike was its poor quality sound from speaker and headphones.

https://youtu.be/dTsg7EyYKFM somebody make a mistake. Pocketnow or Android Authority? Pocket now clearly present at https://youtu.be/dTsg7EyYKFM?t=406 that Axon7 have -105.1Db, better than LG V10, so.... and the graphics are clear presented not only numbers.
Can't agree to that test. I'm running Firmware B08 and now B09. I would say it sounds like my LG V10 witch brings a little more Volt on Headphone output.
Way better than the Samsung S7 Edge. A least with Audio DAC enabled. Even Dolby Atmos sounds better than Samsung. When you listen to the Snapdragon DAC sucks like Samsung.
I read this as measured outputs and not actual quality. I wonder if they actually listened to any music, at all.

The problem is like on the Beoplay H6 1st edition. They sound pretty good but a lot Smartphones can't drive them properly. Still sounds really good but sometimes you like to hear a song louder and for that you need the build in amp with more than 1 Volt. And 0,5 Volt isn't enough for that.
Pixel louder then axon? Ummm no

Poor Audio Headphone Output

I just noticed that, GSMAREANA reported: "Headphones dropped the loudness to way below average, while introducing an average amount of stereo crosstalk and a bit of intermodulation distortion. Not a disastrous showing by any means, but not one worth writing home about. And if you own a pair of high-impedance headphones you might want to keep in mind that you might struggle to achieve high volume levels."
does anyone (who own the phone) notice this?
im about buying it, but i'm worried i will regret cuz i always use wired headphones and dont want go near wireless ones.

Stock sounds are pretty low, but you can use the Mi headphone enhancements to amp up the audio and also use the equaliser to tune the music to your preference. It has the same amp as the Mi A2 (or A1 if you're very used it). The only phone able to surpass this on my audio Technica high impedence headphones is the LG G7 ThinQ, which is quite obvious. It isn't very extraordinaty, but nothing to complain about. Most reviewers don't check out all features and most of all, Xiaomi hasn't made it easy to find the enhancement settings

Thanks for the response, and yeah certainly not expecting an experience at the level of LG's quad dac, but even something similar to MiA1 will be quite good
I tried it in my car using Bluetooth and output is pretty low. I had increase the volume to 15-16 to be able to hear anything.
I am planning to purchase POCO F1, and I am currently using Lenovo P2. I found it weird that in GSMArena review, the objective lab test numbers for audio are worse than that of Lenovo P2, when tested with headphones.
Now Lenovo P2 doesn't have a custom DAC as far as I know, and most probably be relying on SD625 embedded one.
1. So how can the above result of POCO F1 be correct, when it had SD845 Audio and POCO Claims it has a dedicated amp for 3.5mm jack as well as DiracHD tuning?
2. Or is there difference in output with the various modes in MIUI Headphone enhancements in settings?
Experienced hands please let us know. Thanks.
Because Xiaomi didn't implement Snapdragon DAC into MIUI. If anyone need the DAC for High Impedance output, just try Neutron or Poweramp Music Player.
But, be careful, sometimes because Hi-Res output came from DAC directly, volume can be too loud. Reduce your media volume first before trying
Don't worry about the sound. Someone will make a good mod in a month. So be patient. Sound mods will arrive soon and utilize the SD845 sound properly
My mi5 sounded much better than this packing a snapdragon 820 very let down by the headphone jack quality it lacks all the punch in base and clear highs i got from my mi5 :[§ hope someone makes a dac mod which enables the true potential of sd845
Will Neutron Player be able to exploit SD845 DAC? Or is there any other player readily available in PlayStore that can do it?

I hope Dolby support in MIUI 10 would give us also the ability to drive higher impedance headphones.
I had Mi A1 which used to have that output until Xiaomi murdered its sound quality last May.
I tried a flac song on sennheiser hd598, and compared against my LG V20, the sound quality was good and closeto what my V20 drives, on the poco had to punp up the volume a bit though.
Not really an audiophile, but the audio output was not bad by any means.
I'm using the Pocophone F1 with Beyerdynamic dt770 pro 80 ohm headphones and even if quality is not perfect as my other phone (Vivo X21UD) volume is similar

Will Neutron Player be able to exploit SD845 DAC? Or is there any other player readily available in PlayStore that can do it?

Poweramp can also do it. Until now, only those 2 players that can output Hi-Res Output directly from Snapdragon DAC.
