T-Mobile Visual Voicemail - LG V60 ThinQ Questions & Answers

What's the trick on T-Mobile LG V60 to get visual voicemail on the stock Android App? I even have the beta Google Phone app installed and no luck.

I use Google's Phone app/dialer on AT&T and don't have access to the native AOSP VVM app.
Hell, AT&T's own VVM app "isn't compatible" which this phone, according to the Google Play Store. And I bought the phone from AT&T. This isn't an unbranded or open-market model.
For now, I just installed the most recent AT&T VVM app from APKMirror, and that seems to be working fine. I'd love to be able to replace it with the stock Android VVM just to compare features and out of curiosity, if nothing else.
But alas, it seems as if its been AT&T's policy to force users to use their own VVM app a stock default (even if they don't actually start supporting their newest devices until weeks or months after release)!
I would guess there's a similar policy in place with T-Mo.

I don't understand your question. I'm talking about my AT&T-bought LG V60.
It doesn't support AT&T's own VVM app (according to the Google Play Store, "device incompatible").
And it's AT&T's general policy to not allow the stock ASOP VVM on most Android devices (iPhones are completely exempt).
At least it was. If something's changed in the past year or two, I certainly don't see it reflected on my phone.
I had to go to APKMirror to get AT&T's VVM app on this phone, which is ridiculous, but not unusual.
I had to do the same for my old LG V30 until AT&T finally released a new version of their VVM app on the Google Play Store that worked on the V30.
As for the Google Phone app, I have it installed on my V60 and set up as my primary phone app/dialer, and it works fine. It just doesn't have the VVM component.

That is what I'm referring to that carriers block or LG and Samsung block. I have always been able to utilize Google phone app and get visual voicemail on Pixels and OnePlus even on carrier versions without issues.

I'm sick if seeing that error message from T-Mobile Visual Voicemail app. On my carrier Pixel or OnePlus using Google phone app it doesn't have issues at all. I have jump on demand and have since it came out. I have had over 30+ Android models with various Android versions and various T-Mobile Visual Voicemail apps and have seen this message on every device. I'm extremely annoyed, we should not be forced to utilize a third party app when stock Android has this feature.

It's the U.S. carriers, not the OEMs. And it's been known about for years.
Hell, I could never get my open-market LG V30 to utilized AT&T's VoLTE hi-fi calling. My phone supported all the right bands.
Then, why? Because I didn't buy my phone from AT&T. My phone's open-market IMEI was on a blacklist.
Or perhaps, since I didn't buy my V30 from AT&T, it's simply that my phone's IMEI wasn't on a sanctioned white-list.
I know for sure that a few years ago, a Pixel with an AT&T SIM couldn't access Android's stock VVM app.
Slip in a Verizon SIM, and you could. It was, and remains, ridiculous.
Now, it could be that AT&T and Google (and, I suppose, OnePlus) struck deals in the last year or two.
But that's only for their phones. Phones made by other OEMs are typically SOL.
I mean, you can Google the issue for most big (and minor) devices out there and find pages of AT&T forum results complaining about the situation.
It's sadly well documented.

With the work around I have always been able to get this working on a lot of devices. The work around is to install the T-Mobile app, allow to fully setup, uninstall, reboot and wait a few minutes it's there. The LG and Samsungs don't work even with the work around. I am hoping if I get enough signatures the carriers will be forced to change.

Google Wallet on Kit Kat (4.4) can be installed now

Was reading new features offered on Kit Kat, and it mentioned wallet, so I went to google play and google wallet pops up on my T-mobile HTC One. I thought due to security reason T-mobile could not use wallet but Sprint, but it is nice to see wallet can be installed on our phone now. Sharing this info if you haven't tried it yet.
Google Wallet is available on all android devices now. BUT you can not use it to pay for stuff at point of service locations using NFC. That part of the secure element is still being blocked by the carriers.
Google Wallet will let you do other stuff besides just pay at a POS machine. But i dont know what they are. I think you can send money to someone, and check your google play transactions.
That's either not accurate or I'm just lucky because I specifically went with a ported ROM at first to get TAP working again and with the stock 4.4.2 update I can still use TAP. I believe Google bypassed those secure element restrictions previously offered only by Sprint devices so we can all use it. I came from Sprint and used Wallet for over a year and I was pissed when I learned there was nothing I could do till KK because available.

It installed on my TMO HTC One, although I haven't done more than just open it and look around.
Actually to clear up a few things as of android 4.4 and above all devices with NFC can use google wallet just fine including tap and pay. Google wallet no longer requires the secure element as before it's all emulated now. I been using it for a few months now on my htc one from tmobile.

I have a stock HTC One, Stock Note 3 Both TMO and Nexus 5.
The Nexus 5 Wallet app allows me to pay via tap and pay using the wallet app. However the other 2 devices allow me to load the app but NOT use it for tap and pay.

the Note 3 wont be able to use the tap and pay feature because they are using a different NFC chip as the nexus 5 and HTC Ones. once google integrates it with KK, then it should be able to work.
the TMO htc one does work as i tried it when i converted it to GPE.

Well there you go. Your NOT using a T-Mobile HTC One with Wallet.
When you converted it to the GPe you got rid of the T-Mobile blocking software, and its NO longer a T-Mobile HTC One. It is now a Google Play Edition HTC One and that unit does work with tap and pay with Google Wallet.
So back to my original statement. The T-Mobile HTC One can not use tap and pay with Google Wallet. Its still a true statement.
I think your wrong still, I work for T-Mobile and I updated and installed KK on our demo unit. Tap and pay is in fact confirmed to be working.

Interesting.
I wiped my cache from the recovery and enabled NFC again and NOW google wallet does give me the option to use Tap and Pay. But only on the HTC One.. The Note 3 still has it blocked.. Very cool. So now my Nexus 5 and HTC One can do it..
I cant argue anymore. Now i can agree it does work (at least now its giving me an option to use it like its supposed to). Ill test it out as soon as i go to a place that uses it.

B&H Unlocked V30 US998 on Sprint

Has anyone successfully activated a B&H unlocked V30 or V30+ on Sprint? I've been told it should work and 4 people at Sprint said I need a new phone with an unlocked MEID # but I suspect it's a Sprint thing. B&H has offered to exchange.
I've done a lot of googling and have found no definitive answers.
No one?
Here is the answer from Sprint on their support community board.
Re: Unlocked V30+
Good morning! Unfortunately, this device is not listed as Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) eligible device. This is because the device doesn't support all the Sprint bands so it wouldn't be a good experience for the customer to activate the phone since they won't enjoy a good service from us.
Re: Carrier unlocked V30+
Hey keithgreen66. Thanks for reaching out. Unfortunately Sprint is only accepting the LG X charge as a Bring Your Own device. This is because not all device are comparable with out Network.

Have you found a solution? The real issue here is that LG did not ship the unlocked versions with an exchange ready rom. My phone did not have the LG email client and also did not have the exchange app. Without these you're stuck. I have tried installing the APK for both, but they're not working.
My Airwatch agent enables the email client but when I go into it I have no emails and no folders. It constantly crashes amd I cannot compose emails. Not sure if there are more apps required to make this work, but right now I'm stuck using a terrible 3rd party app called touchdown. Its terrible and will cost $20 for a perm license.

Nine app is much better than Touchdown app for corporate email. I used Touchdown for several years, but a couple of years ago they got bought out by Symantec and went to crap. I dumped them and went with NINE. Yes, Nine is a paid app too, but works well. Costs less than Touchdown app.
Also chek out this list below. Says Blue handles Exchange and is free. Nine (paid app) is also on that Top 10 list...

I was going to ask about the V30+ US998 doesn't have Email for exchange. I am kinda disappointed that LG doesn't include Email app.
I am forced to use Gmail for exchange. Now my Gmail and Exchange have the same icon in the notification bar. Is there a way to change my Exchange mail to different icon in the notification bar?
I have tried Microsoft Outlook and I don't like it. Is there a risk using third party (Touchdown and Nince app) for company emails?

I also use Nine. Only down for the app is the price. (15 bucks)
Other than that, it is best app imo.
I used to use MS Outlook on the other phones, but somehow outlook does not work with LG phones on syncing contacts.
I tried on G6 and V30 but did not work. Only email part works.
I paid 15 bucks for Nine. It works pretty good!
The problem with these apps youre referring to is that they aren't accepted in our MDM server, so my only option outside of touchdown is to make my v30 use the preinstalled LG email app and dependencies to make the lg Airwatch service sync up with that email app..

I started using Nine while working for a top corporation (ranked in the top 50 of the Fortune 500). Touchdown also worked previously, but then was bought by Symantec and they ruined it. I switched to Nine and it worked EVEN BETTER. With a company that has tight security.
I've since changed jobs to another company, and my Nine configured perfectly once I put in the proper server information. But a co-worker with the Outlook app had to have one of the IT people personally configure his, even though he was using the same information I used. (They wouldn't talk about what they had to change.)
So, there's nothing wrong with the Nine app -- but apparently only your company whitelists Touchdown? Or have you tried contacting your IT department?
Yeah, they are only allowing touchdown. I have no idea why they arr that stringent. Touchdown is a horrible horrible horrible app... I'm ready to return this and buy the verizon locked v30 just to stop using TD.
I got email and exchange installed but mail keeps insisting that I need to give it "phone" permissions, but thats not an option under permissions, so I'm kinda stuck. I'll talk to our sms group in a little bit and see if I can get around this.
It all beats using the company provided iPhone though.

So far, I have not seen anyone on these threads claiming to have activated on Sprint with a US998. I am a Sprint customer looking for a new high end phone with unlocked bootloader and have been following the progress of the v30 for several months hoping it could be my next device. Based on information I've found in these threads the US998 does not support band 26 and 41 which are sprint bands. It does support band 25 but one band out of three is not going to cut it.
The quote from kgreen66 in post #3 more or less says the same thing
"This is because the device doesn't support all the Sprint bands so it wouldn't be a good experience"
This leads to my question;
Is it possible that somewhere in the future the radio software or firmware from the Sprint version for the v30 (LS998) would be able to be somehow installed on the US998 such that it would have bands 25, 26 and 41 and work with the Sprint network and maintain unlocked bootloader?
If that was somehow possible could a workaround be devised to get around the fact that the phone would still have a US998 IMEI/MEID that Sprint might not want to activate because they think it doesn't support all the right bands?
I'm just trying to determine if there is any possibility that I could ever have a fully rooted, bootloader unlocked v30 on Sprint.
If you want an unlocked bootloader don't get the Sprint ls998. The bootloader is locked, they removed fastboot, LG bridge doesn't seem to work, and all the software is provided by Sprint servers. I can't find a Sprint tot or kdz file anywhere. It's pretty locked down. Not sure if the us998 will work on Sprint with all bands.

All LG images are now signed and you can't crossflash firmware to other variants with different model numbers.
Someone with a banned Sprint V30 (there's lots of them on eBay) was able to find an "unlocking" service that "changed" his phone to a U.S. Cellular model US998. At least enough to let him use it on a GSM based carrier. It didn't REALLY change firmware, it changed an identifier -- which is illegal in some countries and banned from discussion by XDA. So, we'll leave it there.
It's ironic you want to do the opposite... You want to change a good open market (official carrier unlocked model) LG US998 to pretend to be a carrier-locked Sprint phone.
Maybe it's possible, using those same methods, but it's seems it would be harder to fool Sprint into thinking it's their own branded phone. Surely there's more metadata they can check with their own systems.

Can't get (Att) visual voicemail to work...suggestions?

Interesting, since the only real difference between the two is more internal storage.
When I went to AT&T, I had them register my phone as THEIR V30, since that phone is in their database. But that is something to suggest to them.
Although I use AT&T, I don't use their voicemail so I don't if this app works with my V30+.

The APK doesn't work with my V30+ from B&H either.
It installs just fine, and my first boot up of it seems fine too. I'm able to see and delete the default "Welcome to AT&T Visual Voicemail" vm message that the app generates.
But if I close the app and try to reopen it, it just hangs at a blank screen, completely frozen until I force close it.
Additionally, every time I reboot my phone, within seconds, I get a notification of that same stock "Welcome to AT&T Visual Voicemail" vm message.
If I click on the notification, it attempts to open up the app, and causes the same hang mentioned above.
If I delete the app and reinstall the APK, it'll once again appear to work for that first time I open it up. But nah, it's still broken.
Personally, I think AT&T just needs to update the app to support the phone.
I remember it took AGES for them to finally release (via Google Play) a version of the app that would actually install and work on my old 2015 Moto flagship (which I ordered straight from Moto instead of getting from AT&T).
I suspect we're looking at a similar situation here; though I can't imagine why it'd work on the open market V30 but not the open market V30+.

Uhmm, found it but same link. This guy got it to work, but maybe he has a US998 V30. I really don't know why it wouldn't work with US998 V30+.

yea that's me... btw the app version I'm using is 4.2.0.0028, never tried to update it since it's working as is.
So I just chatted with an AT&T customer service rep, and he indicated that I should be able to take my phone into an AT&T store, request that they sync up my device with their systems, and that should allow me to download and use the AT&T Visual Voicemail app from the Google Play Store. I don't have time to head over to a store today, nor will I tomorrow (big storm a-comin'), but I figured I'd post here to see if anyone knew anything about this process. I'll post back with my results later this week if no one beats me to it.
Just an FYI... I ran into a similar issue with Verizon's voicemail app. What I learned was that there's some security thing that Verizon does... Something like removing some key files from the APK. From my limited understanding on an official Verizon phone they install those missing files on the locked down ROM and the APK then installs fine... But if you buy a phone that's not officially supported... Such as our us998 unlockable phone... Then you don't get those files in the ROM... Which makes the APK say it's not compatible.
Due to this I had to setup Google Voice to get visual voicemail (by forwarding my voicemail to my GV number)
This is Verizon and not ATT though... And I would certainly like to be wrong and be very happy if someone managed to get Verizon's voicemail app working on a us998.

Question on the unlocked Bestbuy s9+/Microsoft Store s9+

Are any of these versions free of carrier branding or bloatware ? I remember a while back purchasing a unlocked samsung phone at bestbuy and they sold me a verizon version stating it was the unlocked version.
Wondering if the bestbuy version or microsoft store version both of which are suppose to be unlocked variants have any carrier branding or bloatware.
As always thank you in advance.
I bought my unlocked one from Bestbuy and I can confirm there is no carrier apps on it whatsoever so you should be okay!!
thank you!
I just got one of these from Best Buy as well. There are some things that I am finding that are missing from the unlocked versus the carrier branded version such as no support for AT&T wifi calling, HD Voice, & Visual voicemail. The only thing I would like to get is native support for visual voicemail and I did find a workaround by side loading the AT&T Visual Voicemail APK since the official version from the play store says it is not compatible with my phone.
I think Samsung has a visual voice mail app included with the phone. I also believe att uses this app but they require the phone be provisioned with them. Basically on their system they need the imei and they make it a smartphone plan, unlike an iphone where they make it an iphone provision for facetime etc. Worth a shot to give them a call. I had to do this when switching from my iphone to my old N8. I wonder if enhanced msging works the same.

I would hope, but I've already talked with with AT&T Tech support regarding this. Currently this option is not available on factory unlocked S9/S9+ but is being looked into for a possible future firmware update. Not sure exactly when this will happen but they say it's up to Samsung to update. So how long it will be or even if it will be done is anybody's guess. Perhaps there might be a way to load the Carrier (SM-G965U) firmware to the unlocked (SM-G965U1) model. I've seen it's possible to go the other way but I'm not of the reverse.

Android 8.0 privacy and security

Hi all,
Im a still a bit green around the edges when it comes to dealing with android os.
I have 2 lgv30 (tmobile) and my goals are.....(this is what i need help with)
1. I want to run everything locally, no cloud, no sync, no backups, no services, nothing. I paid for these phones so i shouldnt have google or tmobile in my grille mining my personal data.
2. I dont care if google apps work or not....like i said im trying to get all my stuff on my phone working from my phone and not shared.
3. I have to use microsoft outlook and the home screen launcher microsoft makes is nice... Not intrusive like the google services stuff.
Im trying to clamp down on this privacy securitu stuff thats run amok with google... Copperhead OS is great and i would use it if my phone would work with it.... I dont login or sync any google accounts but i would really like to strip down and know how to achieve my goal with android 8.0.... The bloat, the privacy invasive crap, etc.... Looks like with 8.0 you can lockdown per app per permission....
Any thoughts or ideas?
Thanks
J

LOL. Do you even imagine why RIM and their BBOS vanished? And Meego too? Because Uncle Sam wants your data, not because Android was somewhat better than they or Win Mobile 6.5. With WinMobile 6.5 you could store all your data locally, but seems that now only option is either to disable all google apps on your phone or better get root and flash some Gapps-free ROM.
You may want to read such topics maybe you'll find there more helpfull advices

Let's hope you don't have a T-Mobile exclusive V30 then, because that one is unrootable, bootloader not unlockable, etc. (the only one out of all V30 that can be customized pretty extensively)
1. k, just flash e.g. lineageOS, RR, AEX, dot os, etc. and leave gapps away (only flash the ROM)
2. You want to minimize Google tracking ? Install AdAway as a basis with its 4 blocking lists to be added to your hosts file, then install Blokada - use the "Mother of All ..." (the XDA extensive blocking list), install firewalls (best opensource based) and block off internet access to apps. With "App Ops"/"Privacy Guard" you can fine-grained tweak which apps run in background, at boot, keep your device awake and other things (e.g. location permissions). There's others but that's it for now
3. See if you can get an app or functionality (via XPosed, etc.) that lets you see if there is more internet communication with Outlook & MS Home Screen Launcher than there should be and block it via firewall or add it to hosts file, the extensive blocking list on Blokada might be too much and prevent Outlook from functioning properly so you might need to go with a less aggressive option
Privacy/Security wise it's not only Google, it's Microsoft, Google, FB, Twitter, etc.
It's all companies together and a pretty wide surveillance net.
In any case use a Browser that supports adblocking, disabling of Javascript and additional features (thinking about tracking cookies, invisible image trackers, etc. etc.)
Yeah, there are more things you can tweak related to permissions with 8.0
The following might be interesting:

So in that case we might need location spoofers or anything related (if those even work)
Well....?????
I do have the TMobile LG V30.
looks like im going to have to wait a couple months before it can be rooted???? From what im reading its still being worked on? Unfortuneatley i didnt have the option to go with the unlocked versions.
I definately want to move to Lineage...
Any suggestions or further info regarding rooting and unlocking bootloader would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Won't ever be done. I'll be glad to be proven wrong, of course. I'm just stating probability. T-mobile H932 was released October 2017. This is now mid-August 2018.
1) RSA encryption on H932 is completely different from other North America variants.
2) Other phones are coming along which gets developers' attention. No one is really working on the H932 specifically, because of point #3...
3) There's no need since every V30/V30+/V30S on the planet -- EXCEPT for the T-mobile H932 has easy bootloader unlock, TWRP, root. Use one of those on T-mobile.

Why not? Somebody held a gun to your head? Lots of T-mobile users are using the unlocked versions on T-mobile. No one forced you to buy the H932 specifically.
The carrier unlocked US998 (or the H931, H933, VS996, AS998, LS998 CONVERTED to US998) runs just fine on T-mobile. Plus, the carrier unlocked V30S.
So, there's SEVEN different North America V30/V30+ variant choices for you to buy to run on T-mobile. Mint LS998 V30+ is $315 on eBay right now, and eBay often gives 10% to 20% flash sales to bring the price even lower. Lots of people in this forum bought for 20% off for Father's Day sale, including me.
I've been on AT&T since 2012 and I've NEVER owned an AT&T branded phone. I always buy carrier unlocked phones.
So are you saying i can install lineage os on my tmobile lg v30?
My company has a contract account with tmobile....similar to goverment accounts. Tmobile supplies the phones we have to use..They wont activate any phone except the ones they provide. However, phones can have custom roms and still be used.
I also have employees that have the need for two or more phones due to seperating phone from tethering needs and new bandwidth coming from tmobile. Tmobile provided ALL the phones at huge discounts, no money up front and low monthly payments.
Not everyone has money to throw around......And im guessing here....perhaps like you can? Maybe your the richest man in the world? It must be nice... If someone did hold a gun to my head at our time of purchase we would all be dead because we dont have trust funds like you might have? Its really wonderful you can purchase 2 lg v30 on ebay or amazon and drop 2k with no issues....my employees cant....

I'm saying you can NOT. H932 does not have the fastboot flash commands necessary to install TWRP and root, using the LG Oreo bootloader unlock expoit @TxanMoe found. The other North America variants can be "converted" to US998 for the necessary fastboot flash commands. For some after that, you can even convert back to original model if you wish.
H932 has different RSA encryption than the other North America variants so it's impossible.

Then you didn't read what I wrote. I suggest you read before replying. How does $252 per phone on eBay = $2,000? I'll post again since you didn't read. I'll even do the math for you:

$315 - 20% = $252.
Convert that to US998, root, use on T-mobile with custom ROM. Lots of people use them on T-mobile. It's called Bring Your Own Phone. T-mobile allows non-branded phones to be used on T-mobile -- example Google Pixel phones or ANY compatible phone.
If your company's contract prevents that, too bad. Personal accounts do not prevent that.
Can you buy a another V30 phone and put your company T-Mobile SIM card in? Then root?
