Lgv30ds Taiwan version - LG V30 Questions & Answers

HI,
I have searched the forums but can't find any mention of Taiwan firmware questions relating to the LG V30DS.
I purchased an LG v30ds from Amazon Australia in May 2018. Turns out it comes with the Taiwan firmware. I'm currently sitting on Security Patch Level 1 September 2019 - Android Version 9, software version V30c-TWN-XX.
My questions are:
is there a more recent security update that LG hasn't released for this version of the phone?
Would it be relatively simple to flash to a more recent firmware (preferably Australian but wouldn't rule out other versions completely)?
I realise this still won't give me OTA updates if there even are updates released from LG. I know other people who frequently get security updates on their android phones and I haven't had one in well over 6 months.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Sian (sharn)

First, you have an H930DS. It's a 128GB V30+ with dual sim. The "plus" in V30+ merely means more internal storage. There are other 128GB V30+ without dual SIM capability (like H930G, LS998, US998 V30+), and there are 64GB V30 with dual SIM (like the H930D). Just clarifying for you and others exactly what you have. By the way, most dual SIM owners don't actually need/use their dual SIM capability.

Second, no, there's no more recent that I'm aware of. Well, heard maybe some Korean V30 variants got December 2019 update, but now that's finished. And it's not compatible with H930DS, which you have.
This is a 2017 phone, and you bought it end of 2-year stock firmware updates cycle. Your Pie 30C (Android 9) update was end of the line for any firmware updates and security patches. It should have gone longer -- to at least mid-2020 based on promises LG made for Enterprise Recommended agreement with Google, and I thought would probably go to end of 2020 -- but LG has walked away.

Third, you can use the Dev Patched LGUP from any Pie KDZ thread to flash whatever H930DS firmware you wish over your H939DS. Do you want Australian firmware? You won't get any newer firmware (Australia 30C also has September 2019 security patch), but you can get closer to wherever you live. Some regional firmware is optimized for carriers in that region. In your case specifically, I don't know that you would gain any advantage by flashing Australian H930DS firmware vs Taiwan H930DS firmware -- but if you live in Australia, it wouldn't hurt.
Here's the Australia H930DS 30C KDZ:

https://lg-firmwares.com/downloads-file/20587/H930DS30c_00_OPEN_AU_DS_OP_0902
If you want to change over to this firmware, you would use Dev Patched LGUP to help you cross flash from your Taiwan firmware. Read the instructions at bottom of this H930SD Pie KDZ post #2. IGNORE that the thread is for India H930DS. It's the Dev Patched LGUP at the bottom of the post you need to read. You would want to use REFURBISH mode or PARTITION DL mode (choosing all Partitions in separate window). Do NOT use "Upgrade" mode since you would be cross flashing.

Fourth, if you bootloader unlocked and rooted you could get current security patches and even newer OS through LOS-17 (Android 10) based custom ROMs. But be aware of trade-offs (bugs like no VoLTE, no LG camera, etc). Here's current bug list for Android 10 LOS-17 custom ROMs.. That list is kept updated by @tech_infinity.
But on stock firmware with old security patch, the V30 is still a FANTASTIC phone. (I know you have V30+, but we tend to call them all "V30" (V30/V30+/V30S) unless you are discussing some specific difference. For instance, the V30S is basically a V30+ with 6GB RAM.)
I myself am still on stock rooted Oreo. The US998 Pie was too wonky for me. I have rooted Oreo with Magisk and Xposed mods to customize the phone the way I want and add other features.
If you are interested in rooting your V30+ read this. Post #1 is about rooting. Post #2 is FAQ about custom ROMs.

Frustrating Oreo LG H930DS

it's very frustrating and unfiar for LG H930DS users they didn't get yet Android Oreo updates yet. I Jaye LG always do OS updates in Korea/US users. i am not very much confident today note LG will give updates on time to everyone not only Korea model.
This guy just flashed the H930DS Oreo KDZ on his India H930DS phone, and you can too.

1) Why are you opening multiple threads to make the same complaint? If you have something to add, add it to thread you already made. You opened these two threads just two minutes apart. Come on!
https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/help/oreo-updates-t3788785
2) I don't know which DS you have, but if it's India why not post in the India thread in the first place, instead of making new threads.
3) H939DS Oreo KDZ is posted down in Development. Been released for awhile. YOU CAN FLASH IT RIGHT NOW and you will have Oreo on your H930DS.
3) If you're talking about a specific regional flavor, please clarify and don't make a blanket statement? For instance, "The Oreo KDZ for MY H930DS has not been released yet."
But you can flash the KDZ for the H930DS posted -- and before that was released, we found H930DS could even flash H930 KDZ.
However, VoLTE for India carriers doesn't work with those H930DS/H930 KDZ, which is problematic for Jio in particular. But others have flashed the H930DS and H930 Oreo KDZ and are quite happy for now until their regional Oreo is released. Depends on your situation.

US998u and on the sticker on the back of the phone it says ls998

Hello, i from to Argentina and I recently bought an unlocked v30+ on eBay. In the software settings it says that it's us998u and on the sticker on the back of the phone it says ls998. It is unlocked and working on cricket wireless. The only issue is that it came with Android 7.1.2 and it says it is currently running the latest version and that there are no updates available. I was fairly sure that all models of the v30 had 8.0.
You purchased someone Sprint LS998 that was bootloader unlocked, rooted, and had open market software installed instead of the Sprint software.
For all intents and purposes, it's a US998. hardware is identical. It's just 1's and 0's that's different.
It is updatable. You can find an up-to-date KDZ to flash, along with flashing software and instructions so ewhere in the forums.

May never have been bootloader unlocked and rooted. Seller just Frankenstein converted to Nougat and left there. They didn't even finish flashing Oreo. They're probably able sell it for more money with carrier unlocked US998 (works with every carrier) than locked down Sprint LS998 which is is SIM card locked to Sprint.
I think my brother-in-law bought one like that. His old HTC phone got dunked in water and he needed phone fast. He's on AT&T and I told him to buy "mint" US998 off eBay, because I don't have time right now to mess with it (to convert LS998 to US998). I'm pretty sure it was previously LS998 because it's the SAME seller I bought my two LS998 from. That's fine, seller did the work for me or most of it. It's probably on Nougat too, but my brother in law doesn't care. I'll take a look at it when I get a chance.

No, it won't stop working. Just flash to Oreo with dev patched LGUP. If you don't care about bootloader unlock and root, flash to the very latest in my US998 KDZ thread. If you do care, then first flash older Oreo, unlock the village bootloader, then flash to most recent.

Then this is what you want:
[US998][STOCK][OREO]LG V30 US998 US99820d_01_0710.kdz
Install the most recent KDZ you find in post #1, which right now is 20D. If someone finds this thread a couple of months from now, may be higher letters/numbers.
Download the KDZ and also download/install the dev patched LGUP you find attached to post #1. You want "upgrade" option. That will keep your data and you don't need anything other choices. The phone has already been converted to US998 and even Master Reset (apparently). They just didn't finish my instructions in the Frankenstein thread.

This is dev patched LGUP. You want "Upgrade" just like this shows. This shows upgrading from Nougat 10D to 20A, but you would choose 20D (or whatever is current, if you don't care about bootloader unlock.)
They converted from LS998 to US998 Nougat and put it on ebay as US998. (Which it is now.) I bought two LS998 off eBay and quickly converted them to carrier unlocked US998. But selling US998 probably gets more demand as that will work with any carrier.

Keep reading, I'm taking care of the boring stuff first.
1) I'm answering your question here in the Q&A section. Please do not ask general questions about a phone in custom ROM thread. Your question has nothing to do with that ROM, where you posted your question.
2) This is the V30 forum, not the V35 forum -- but your phone may be an exception. I'll explain in a second.
3) Kingo root app? Please. Nothing like that is going to bootloader unlock and root a V30 or V35. It's only going to try to infest your phone with malware and send your IMEI back to China. There's no such thing as 1-click roots for V30, V35, G7.
4) If you were interested in rooting your phone you would have researched here on XDA first before buying the phone. There are many phones which do not have root and will never have root (2015 Kinzie Verizon Droid Turbo 2, for instance.) Even when seemingly guaranteed root, like with LG's "open market" US998 V30/V30+, LG broke it's implied promises. Only thanks to their wonderful Oreo bootloader unlock exploit which @TxanMoe found does every V30/V30+/V30S -- except T-mobile H932 -- have bootloader unlock and root. Point is, don't buy a phone without researching first. Don't buy a phone, then come to XDA to find out whether it can or can't be rooted.
5) Now the good stuff. Japan LG phones are DIFFERENT. They demand different model numbers, sometimes different specs. Japan also still uses the 4G WiMax protocol, besides using the 4G LTE protocol. (Google if you don't know what WiMax is.) The Japan LG V20 was called the LG "V34", and had different (smaller) dimensions from the LG V20. Internally it was an LG V20, but for the Japanese market it was V34 (isai Beat).
Japan-exclusive LG V34 is a 5.2" waterproof version of the V20
The isai Beat keeps everything that’s awesome about the V20 - the secondary always on screen, the dual-camera on the back, the dual-FoV selfie cam, the quad-DAC setup, B&O branding, Android 7.0 Nougat on Snapdragon 820 with 4GB of RAM and 32GB storage.
Except, of course, the screen is 5.2" big rather than 5.7" big. Despite the smaller size, the phone kept the (presumably removable) 3,000mAh battery.
It is a mini version of the LG V20, except a little better since it is IP67 waterproof while the V20 doesn’t have even basic splash resistance.

It was ONLY released in Japan.
What does that have to do with YOUR 2017 "V35" phone? The Japanese V20 was called the V34. The 2017 Japanese V30+ is called the "V35". It is completely different from the 2018 LG V35 released here in the U.S. and to AT&T, B&H Photo, and Google Fi. The Japanese "V35" was released last November 2017 to Japan with Oreo already installed, and is exclusive to Japan. It's a V30+ for Japan market called "V35", as the successor to the V34.
If you go here, to LG.com website for Japan (note this is OFFICIAL LG website!), and use Google translate....
https://www.lg.com/jp/mobile-phone/lg-LGV35
You will see it's a 128GB V30+ with 4GB RAM and Snapdragon 835.
Towards the bottom they even mention the free VR goggles promotion for the V30+:
Let's experience the latest VR, Daydream with V30 + as soon as possible !!

So, your phone is really a V30+, it really is JOAN (not the JUDYP of the other 2028 V35). It possibly can be bootloader unlocked and rooted, and use @SGCMarkus JOAN TWRP for V30.
And yes, this is totally confusing for all the other 2018 V35 owners who have been correctly told their phone is NOT a V30 and is totally different. But using one of the CPU type apps on Google Play, you can easily see the difference is YOUR phone has Snapdragon 835 and the other 2018V35 (AT&T, Google Fi) have Snapdragon 845.
6) I had researched a little about the Japanese 2017 V35 before and thought the Japanese press was mistaken in calling it a V30+ when it was released. I thought it was just the first of the V35 which were then released here in the U.S. a few months later. No, from the LG.com website the the Japanese "V35" is indeed a V30+.
How do you bootloader unlock and root it? How do you carrier unlock it? You would have revert back KDZ with pre-July 2018 security patch for bootloader unlock and root, IF your phone has fastboot flash commands. If it doesn't then you would have to Frankenstein (convert) your V30+ to a carrier unlocked H930DS, which does has fastboot flash commands. That would also carrier unlock it, if it doesn't totally brick it. I assume you don't need the WiMax 4G stuff? Only LTE? Being "exclusive" Japanese, it might have some of the complications the Korean V30/V30+ variants have. They have to flash to H930, bootloader unlock and root, then flash to US998 to get modem back working.
Good luck!
7) You have an interesting phone -- but if it's carrier locked to a Japanese network you don't use, then it's not much use to you. Theoretically, you can bootloader unlock it, and possibly carrier unlock it. But it's going to be a lot of work and there's probability you will brick your phone. I really don't know about the Japanese V30+ variants... Whereas, you can buy "mint" LS998 V30+ on eBay for a little over US$300 and easily Frankenstein them to carrier unlocked US998 V30+, bootloader unlock and root them. See point #4. Research FIRST before buying a phone.
Japanese LGV35 is NOT "LG V35", it is named "isai V30+ (LGV35)"
LGV35 is Japanese career au's model numbers, not product name.

Exactly what I said. Japan LG V35 is really a V30+. You even posted some of the same links I posted. By the way, LG chooses model numbers -- like H930, H932, H930G, US998, LS998, VS996, H930DS, so LG also chose LGV35 -- NOT the carrier. U.S. Cellular AND open market variants are both US998. US Cellular did NOT choose that, LG did. LG also chose LGV35 for this Japanese carrier. Just as US998 is sometimes written as US 998, and LS998 is written as LS 998, LGV35 can be written as LG V35.
LG V35 officially unveiled in Japan with Android Oreo
LG Japan has officially unveiled their much-anticipated flagship smartphone of the year, AKA, the LG V35. The LG V35 is a rebranded LG V30+, which runs on Android Oreo with LG UX on the top.

It's called the "LG V35" throughout the article and I can show a dozen more news articles writing it exactly the same way.
You can write it however you like -- LGV35, LG V35 -- but LG ALSO released V35 model number months later to AT&T, Google Fi, as a completely different phone series -- so it's confusing. LG should have called the later 2018 Snapdragon 845 JUDYP something else besides V35. That name was already taken!
At least two other people have posted here about their Japanese LG V35, so it is confusing, when we keep having to tell people the OTHER V35 is not the V30 -- but there's this one exception!

Don't buy a phone, then come to XDA to find out it can't be rooted.

IF it's compatible, you'd have to flash another V30/V30+ KDZ to carrier unlock and get fastboot flash commands, by using dev patched LGUP. I do not know if any other V30 KDZ are compatible.
Basically you have to Frankenstein it to another V30/V30+. However, if it's not RSA encryption compatible, you run risk of bricking your phone.
For example, Korean carrier variants flash to H930 KDZ, unlock the bootloader, root, then have to flash US998 to get modem back.
But T-Mobile H932 is not RSA encryption compatible with other North American variants, so cannot Frankenstein to anything.
I really can't advise you to do that, that's your decision if want to risk bricking your phone.

I mentioned it in this post:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76325684&postcount=42
Just remember that post was written back in April 2018, when we were still figuring out the Frankenstein method. But these "boxes" were allowing online sellers and online unlockers to convert V30 phones to OTHER variants seemingly willy nilly. We found LS998 V30+ which had been converted to Canadian H933 V30+. Canada H933 doesn't officially have a V30+! Just like there's no VS996 V30+! But you can make one.
Once we figured out the PC based Frankenstein system with dev patched LGUP, then we could do almost the same thing ourselves. Since then, I even bought two mint LS998 V30+ myself and converted them to US998 V30+.
But when I made that post I expressed severe reservations about buying LS998 in the first place -- since they were SIM card locked to Sprint. Like I said, we didn't know everything we know now, and I've changed my mind on the topic.
Whether one of these boxes could help you or not. My understanding is it basically does what dev patched LGUP does. Maybe it does it more automatically and there's less chance for error? I don't know.

All H930DS KDZ are compatible with each other. Yes, there are some differences, like Open ESA region has India Jio Volte, and others don't.
If you're phone is compatible with other dual SIM KDZ, you could flash something like the Hong Kong KDZ. Just...
make sure You're flashing pre-July 2018 Oreo firmware.
make sure it has the word "OPEN" in the title (that link above is to H930DS20n_00_OPEN_HK_DS_OP_0416.kdz).
make sure you're flashing dev patched LGUP in DL Partition mode, with all partitions. See that link post for attached file -- dev patched LGUP, as well as instructions for installation and use. But I would probably suggest the Hong Kong KDZ to actually flash, IF you decide to do this.
But I'm warning you that you may brick your phone phone. This decision is totally up to you.

How many US998 versions are there??

Hi, there. I found that there are few numbers of US998 versions like US998 20a, 20e, 20D, 10c, 10d and maybe more.
So, what are those 3 digit numbers behind the "US998"? Will I be able to install 20a ROM on 10c device or vice versa?
As for my mine is US998 10c.

US998 is the device model
10c, 20a and so on are software versions.
20(letter) or 21(letter) and so on are Oreo (second major android version), 10(letter) is nougat (android version it was released with)
if software version letter hits "z" and there are more, the 0 will turn into a 1, and it starts at "a" again... and so forth
Pie for the V30 will be (v)30(letter). (v meaning something like version)

@SGCMarkus has answered your question about Nougat and Oreo, but to answer your question completely there's three US998 versions.
* 64GB US998 V30
* 128GB US998 V30+ (US998U)
* 128GB/6GB RAM US998 V30S (aka US998R).
We often just skip the official model number and call it US998 V30, US998 V30+ or US998 V30S.
You have USS998 with Nougat 10C. If you wish to unlock bootloader and root using the WTF method, you need to upgrade to Oreo 20A or 20B to gain the exploit to easily unlock the bootloader, so you can install TWRP and root. AFTER that, then you can update to newest firmware like Oreo and still have unlocked bootloader.

There ARE updates for your phone, you are just not seeing them for some reason. You can manually install the updates, using LGUP. I have them posted in the US998 KDZ thread. Just don't update too far initially before unlocking the bootloader or then you have to downgrade back to 20A/20B.
TWRP comes later after you unlock bootloader.
To update from Nougat to Oreo in US998 is extremely easy, just use "Upgrade" option in LGUP. All the US998 Oreo KDZ are listed here:
[US998][STOCK][OREO]LG V30 US998 US99820e_02_0910.kdz
I have a dev patched LGUP attached to that thread. Dev patched LGUP is more powerful, has more functions than the regular LGUP. You may not need all that functionality right now (you just need simple upgrade) but you might need it in the future.
This is the WTF bootloader unlock thread. Once on Oreo 20A/20B on US998 you don't have to "convert" to anything else so the hard work is already done.
Most of those instructions are to get people all to the same place: fastboot flash commands (which the US998 already has) and Oreo bootloader exploit (which US998 20A/20B has)

Luckily someone wrote a guide just for that...
FRANKENSTEIN - CONVERTING ANY NORTH AMERICA V30/V30+ (except T-mobile H932) TO US998 OREO

(I don't speak for ChazzMatt but think I can help you a bit)
Once any device has been modified (boot loader unlocked / rooted / twrp) you will no longer receive (or at least be able to install - it may come over the air - but it won't update) OTA updates.
So yes, you would have to install them manually. Keep in mind though, because the V30 is modifiable, quite a few ROM's and other development is going on. So there will be help to do updating and even some debloated roms available.
Cheers

His isn't bootloader unlocked, I don't think... It's just he has AT&T H931 which doesn't receive updates unless you're on AT&T network. AT&T also doesn't release KDZ, they only do OTA with an AT&T SIM card.
Best thing to do is convert to US988 and then update at will.

No, he probably won't get US998 OTA. But right now on H931 firmware, there's no updates at all -- if he's not an AT&T customer.
Personally, I prefer full image KDZ vs partial image OTA update.
With US998, takes 5 minutes every couple of months to manually install update via LGUP in Upgrade mode. (Updates are released about every two months.). That would be for people who are NOT bootloader unlocked, have TWRP custom recovery.
For people who have TWRP custom recovery, then just Install the most recent US998 TWRP FLASHABLE zip ROM.
Whether KDZ or TWRP flashable zip...
* US998 updates are readily available,
* US998 firmware is debloated.
* US998 firmware has fastboot flash commands.
* US998 firmware is guaranteed carrier unlocked.
I'm not entirely familiar with the US carrier setups but shouldn't an update be available on Bridge at least? Or your carrier locks disables that?
I don't recall seeing this problem on the G5 while we were waiting for oreo. Seems like every other major variant was bridge upgrade capable save for a few models that didn't get the oreo update.

AT&T H931 and Sprint LS998 will not show updates via LG BRIDGE. They ONLY do OTA while connected to that carrier's SIM card.
So when you buy a "carrier unlocked" H931 -- which people only want because they are not an AT&T customer -- that precludes them from ever getting updates while on H931 firmware, which they don't need anyway because it's AT&T bloated firmware.
Instead you convert to debloated carrier unlocked US998 firmware to free your phone. Get easy updates via LGUP, get fastboot flash commands.

And that's where you will stay forever unless you convert to another variant that has publicly released KDZ -- or unless you become an AT&T customer.
US998 is on March 2019 Oreo security patch.

OK, try that. Tell me how it works for you. Then read the instructions and do it right.
If you read that entire post, I tried going straight to Oreo. I detail it all in the "long" version lower down in that post. With Oreo, LG put in a block to try to prevent our North American Frankenstein variant conversions, but they can't prevent us from downgrading to US998 Nougat THEN upgrading back to US998 Oreo.
To my knowledge, there's only one North American variant which can still go straight from their Oreo to US998 Oreo -- and I don't mention it in the Frankenstein instructions, because then everyone will try it and mess up their phones and waste time hoping theirs is also an exception.

Back to the thread topic... You successfully converted H931 to US998 20H?
I'm not a big fan of benchmark tests. But here's what I got (on US998 20G).
Your old Nokia 8 has 6" 1440p OLED, Quad DAC, Qi wireless charging, IP68, stereo FM radio? DTS 3D surround sound (with root)?
Didn't think so. I could probably list more stuff...
https://m.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8712&idPhone2=8522
My phone isn't slow, doesn't lag with the stuff I do, and I'm more a fan of premium features than benchmark tests which can be rigged.

Drop to res to FHD in settings before you game or start your game and use game settings (the one in the phone, not the game) to adjust for the performance level you want. Hasn't failed so far even with PUBG ( installed for testing purposes )

Something to do with yer phone then. Mine has it. Just reinstalled it to be sure..
Btw, app scaling only shows apps that can't support the native 18:9. Most apps using updated to the new APIs already do.
Just realized screencaps don't grab the nav bar. Here's game tools in PUBG...
I've got it to show in all games I tried installing.
