How to unlock & root Redmi 9S & 9 Pro using official tools only - fully working
MOD NOTE: This guide is only for devices with Qualcomm Snapdragon chipsets, NOT MediaTek!
This tutorial guides you through unlocking and rooting your Redmi 9 Pro & Redmi 9S (or really any Xiaomi phone that came with MIUI11 and a Snapdragon processor) using official tools with verified sources. This is much more reliable than blindly trusting shady closed-source TWRP mods, which don't fully work or flashing pre-patched boot images, which are not meant for your phone. Note that currently there is no official TWRP for any Android 10 phone.
I have tested this myself on Redmi Note 9S Global, MIUI V11.0.8.0.QJWMIXM. Everything is working as expected, there are no issues with SU and file managers as mentioned in the other thread.
Step 1 - unlocking the bootloader
Skip this section if your phone has its bootloader already unlocked.
1) Insert a valid and mobile data enabled SIM card and sign in or create a Mi Account. This is sadly necessary, as every unlock must be approved by Xiaomi's automated system. It also forces you to wait for a full week with a countdown before unlocking is allowed. This step is necessary only once for the very first time.
2) Download Xiaomi's official unlocking tool. I encourage you to read the linked tutorial specifically the section "Unlocking Bootloader Procedure". tl;dr - you need to enable developer options, go to Settings > Additional settings > Developer options > Mi Unlock Status and apply for an unlock.
3) Reboot to fastboot recovery mode (hold Vol- and Power when powering on the phone) and run the Mi Unlock tool on your Windows PC. After jumping through a few hoops, you should arrive at the following screen saying that you have to wait for 168 hours.

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
4) Reboot the phone and keep it powered on during the following week. When 168 hours have passed, repeat step 3 and this time it should finally unlock. Note that this erases your data, which is always the case when unlocking bootloader on any Android phone.
Step 2 - installing Magisk and patching your boot image
1) Download the official ROM from here - make sure the model of your phone and the installed firmware EXACTLY match what you're downloading. If they don't, it will most likely NOT work correctly - bootloops, wifi not working etc.
2) Install Magisk Manager (.apk) on your phone from the official Magisk repository.
3) Extract boot.img (about 128MB) from the official ROM zip you downloaded and transfer it to the phone. Click "install" in Magisk Manager and point it to boot.img. This should result in a patched magisk_patched.img (about 15MB - padding was removed), transfer this file to your computer. Ideally to the Mi Unlock folder where fastboot.exe is located.
4) Reboot your phone to fastboot recovery mode. Open a command prompt in the folder of the Mi Unlock tool and run
Code:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
This flashes the patched Magisk-enabled bootloader to your phone.
5) Reboot the phone and that's it! Verify root status in the Magisk Manager app.

The SafetyNet Check outputs this:
Code:
ctsProfile: false
basicIntegrity: true
Can't verify this, but I'd say it's unlikely that you'll get things like Google Pay working reliably. From what I've read, the same goes for any rooted device.

Is this working on joyeuse too?

While I did not personally test it, it definitely should. As I said, the tutorial applies to any phone that came pre-installed with MIUI11 and likely any recent Xiaomi phone.
As long as the phone runs MIUI and has a single boot partition (ie. not A/B partitions), it will likely work. You just need to get the correct boot.img for your phone and Xiaomi thankfully provides the ROMs.

Bootloop?
Kinda new with this rooting, i reached the step 4 of part 2 and i got a successful message from the powershell after the command. I tried restarting the phone but is stuck in the boot animation (where it just says "unlocked" on the bottom of the screen and it just restarts over and over). Is this working ONLY on redmi note 9s/pro or also with the base redmi note 9? Any help would be much appreciated!

It should work on Redmi Note 9. Which factory ROM did you use to source boot.img? If you can't get the patched boot.img to work, you can always flash the original one to fix the boot loop.

I downloaded the V11.0.4.0.QJOEUXM (MIUI11) version from the given link (checked in the phone info so i was sure to download the correct one). Then Magisk made a file and i copy/paste it into the folder with the unlocking software and fastboot.exe and i ran the command from that folder with powershell. The result was successful, so next step was to simply turn on the phone and check if everything was ok. Problem is that the phone is turning on but i can't access fastboot anymore. It just stays with "Redmi" in the middle of the screen, below it says "Unlocked" and after a couple of seconds it turns off.

You should always be able to access fastboot, even in a bootloop (by holding Vol- and Power for 15 seconds or so), unless you've overwritten it by accident. Does this work?
Also, your phone may be using a Global ROM even if bought in the EU, as was my case.

I tried multiple times to access fastboot, without success. It's like it only recognizes the power button pressed, doesn't matter if i press volume+ or volume- is just stuck in the initial screen. (if i could access fastboot i would be able to restore the stock rom to make it work again). Is it possible to delete fastboot? If i did, idk how. There are no alternatives to make it work again? (without fastboot at least).
Thank you for the quick reply btw

Yes, there are not testing in Merlin are you sure you had flashed the correct rom? Very bad that it is not stay in fastboot, I have not this phone, the important is to be defected by the PC.
Try to plugin to usb with - or + or both button pressed as you connect it, also try this with the telephone powered off.
Check you pc using Device manager if in any case is defected.

The second option is using Xiaomi's recovery, which should be accessible by holding Vol+ and Power. Are you sure the buttons are not working? I doubt you've overwritten both recoveries. It's a bit finnicky, but you just have to hold the buttons down for quite a long time and ignore the phone restarting until you get to fastboot or recovery.

That's what i used the first time i messed up, i went to fastboot and recovered the phone without issues, but now if i keep pressed power button + any volume button it just turns on and off without doing anything else. Kept the buttons pressed for around one minute each, then my fingers started to hurt a bit

Huh, that's odd, I've never seen this. I was able to launch fastboot on all the phones I've had so far, no matter what.
In any case, if you manage to solve this, please post a solution here

They should work as long as you don't modify the system partition. Applying an update will unroot your phone, so you'll have to patch boot.img after every update. I didn't have a chance to try the updates myself, I couldn't stand MIUI and flashed this much more stable version of stock Android https://forum.xda-developers.com/redmi-note-9-pro/development/gsi-t4105121 .

Redmi 3s - stuck at boot screen and only fastboot is possible now.

hi y'all
i tried to flash my redmi 3s with a official dev rom today but unfortunatelly it seems that I messed things up.
My phone's bootloader wasn't unlocked so I tried the method for locked bootloaders using miflash and getting the phone into download mode. I got all the drivers installed (at least I think so) on Win 10 64 bit (driver signature verification is disabled).
While trying to flash using MiFlash I got at approx. 20% the error message "MiFlash Error "0x80070008 max buffer sector is 256". After that, my phone didn't boot anymore. All I'm seeing is the white Mi-icon.
I also noticed that It's not possible anymore to turn the device off. When I try, it turns on by itself and is stuck at the boot screen.
Download mode isn't working either. I tried the button-combination (Vol+ and -) and the "fastboot oem edl" command from Win command prompt when the phone is in fastboot mode - which does working.
When entering "fastboot oem edl" command I only get "waiting for any device" and nothing happens.
Is there any way to unbrick my phone or can I only use it as a paperweight from now on?
I hope yomebody can help.
Thanks & regards
Connect to your computer and try the power+volume(+)+volume(-)

Thanks for the fast response. I tried this while my phone was connected to my pc. Now I see this on my phone:
http://www.techgrapple.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Unlock-Redmi-Note-3-Bootloader.jpg
and at the bottom it says pcsuite.mi.com.
When I take a look in the Windows device manager it says "Android Phone / Android ADB Interface".
Am I really in download mode now?
regards
Hi, because of that error you got installing new ROM you cant boot your phone anymore. As that happened to me before i might help you.
First, make sure you hold long enought power+VOL- buttons. Hold them for good one minute, you should be able to go into fastboot mode. Fast Boot worked for me when my Redmi had softbrick, also something messed up installing ROM.
Let me know how it goes.

You should now download MI flash program, and try to flash your device trough it. You can find tutorials on youtube.( just make sure you have lastest drivers installed.

And also have you followed the steps? Like have you installed the unsigned drivers for mi flash? To flash using mi flash tool you will need to have your to disable driver signature enforcement, there is a way to disable it with cmd, I recommend you to use that method.
And your phone's screen should be totally black when its on download mode, if it's not helping then try going to the recovery mode at first, (volume(+)+power, then from the built in recovery miui go to the download mode, hope this helps, i use redmi 3 pro, same happened to me the first time

When I press Power and Vol+ the phone is simply rebooting. There isn't no Recovery screen.
I noticed, when installing a Version of miflash, a Tutorial said that there are three Popups which ask me if I really want to install an unsigned driver. I always only got 2 of these popups when installing miflash. Is there a way to install all drivers manually?
This got to be some kind of driver issue. I tried connecting the phone on another System (win7, 32bit) in fastboot mode. Here, when in enter fastboot OEM edl, the screen Gies black and the Windows device manager Shows COM3 Qualcomm...
It just ain't working on Win10
I got it now. I messed around in the windows device manager (unsinstalled the android / adb /...devices), reinstalled the drivers. Then, in fastboot mode, I executed the fastboot oem edl command and I got into download mode. From here I had to use the older version of MiFlash (2016.04.01.0 64bit). The newest version always gave me the error "specified cast is not valid" when I clicked the refresh button. Seems to be buggy as hell but the older version of Miflash worked as a charm.
Now, my bootloader is unlocked and I'm rockin the newest global version of official MIUI.

Need help with bricked kenzo

I know there is few hundered threads with "unbrick" in title but I read them all and nothing seems to work.
Friend brings me kenzo that he gets since his cousin brick it while trying OTA.
When I power phone its start to load system and it has 3 stages:
1. Show screen with "powered by Android" and 3 dots in the bottom, usualy about 4 min and restart
2. After restart just get black screen with Mi logo in the middle, for about 30 sec and restart
3. Instead of Android with dots bottom have white line progres bar, it takes 4 to 5 min and restart again.
After that stage 2 and 3 repeat for long as you have nervs to wait .
Phone can get in recovery and fastboot mode. And when I put him in test mode just show test screen and cant do anything.
In fastboot mode MiFlash recognize phone but report "device is locked" (try with 20160401 and 20160830).
After that i put him in EDL mode (fastboot reboot-edl) and MiFlash report successful flash. But nothing changes.
I try flashing global stable v8.0.5.0, china stable v8.0.4.0, global dev v6.10.13 and at the end global stable v7.2.5.0.
Any idea welcome. Thx
Have you tried to unlock bootloader? Perhaps install TWRP and do a system/dalvik/cache wipe and install MIUI through that?

Cant do that. Even unofficial unlock need phone to be working to enable USB debbuging and accept RSA kay from PC.
Edit: Right now looking for ways to edit boot.img to unlock bootloader in attempt to get any useful recovery.
you can try this guide to flash twrp altogether with rom. after flashing, directly boot to twrp and move to custom rom

I will try... but dont think it will do the job. Will post result little later.
EDIT
It dose not work, just as I think.
All that kind of method/advice need 2 things:
1. Enabled USB debbuging - You cant do that on bricked phone even if you edit boot.img ( ro.debuggable=1 ) because fastboot will not execute command since you will not have option to accept RSA kay from PC on your phone and complete that action.
2. Dev ROM - since you have to enable OEM unlock and that option you have only in dev ROMs. Even Xiaomi official unlock requires that you must do it on dev ROM and that is a reason for "stuck on 50% in unlocking".
I try all that I can think: edit boot.img file, use patch emmc_appsboot.mbn, use edited flash_all.bat and rawprogram0.xml, insert sTWRP and ZCX TWRP in fastboot ROM... and all combination of that. Did it on 7.2.5.0 and 8.0.5.0 stable and 6.8.18 dev (since its last 5.1 ROM that I have).
Most of this attempts ends with "3 stages" explained in the first post. Some just show Mi logo for few sec and restart, once even power off phone. And once I even get phone to go directly to sideload/recovery state showing picture of the phone and usb cable.
Only thing left now is to find info is there difference in accessing to EDL mode between software (reboot-edl), deep flash cable and testpoint. IMHO there is none or little difference. Since software and deep flash can be troubled with bad USB cable or connector or USB board in phone.

Root NOTE 20 5G, NOTE 20, NOTE 20+ ( Exynos )

Rooting guide for NOTE 20 series *super nooooob friendly*
Requirements - Brain, note 20, working data cable, windows laptop/ PC, magisk manager, 7Z, Firmware of note 20.
Part A
Bootloader unlocking -
1. Enable OEM unlock under developer options.
2. Turn off your NOTE 20 and make sure it is disconnected from charger or PC/ Laptop.
3. Hold volume up and volume down. While holding them connect your NOTE 20 to PC/ Laptop. When you see warning screen release both keys.
4. You should 3 options. Long press volume up until bootloader unlock prompt appears. Press volume up again to confirm bootloader unlock.
5. NOTE 20 will reset and reboot. Just setup device as usual. Bootloader is unlocked now.
This will trip knox so knox related features won't work and banking apps might not work as well.
PART B
Rooting -
1. Download appropirate firmware according to your current build number. You can check build number in settings > about > software information.
2. Extarct the downloaded firmware. You will see 4 files AP, BL, CP, CSC. Unzip AP file using 7Z 64 BIT.
3. Extracted AP will have several files. Look for boot.img.lz4 extract this file you will get boot.img
4. Install magisk manager ( canary recommended however 20.4 is also working ) on your NOTE 20, move boot.img to internal storage of NOTE 20.
5. Open magisk > click on install > select and patch file > find boot.img and select it. Wait for a while for magisk to patch it. When magisk says DONE you're good to go.
6. Go to internal storage of device > downloads/ download folder > look for magisk_patched.img copy this file to your PC.
7. Rename magisk_patched.img to boot.img and use 7Z to convert boot.img to boot.tar
8. Reboot device to download mode. ( ok this one is easy please google if you don't know how to boot your note 20 to download mode )
9. Open latest odin 3.14X under AP slot select the boot.tar ( created in step 7 ) under options is odin uncheck auto reboot and click on start. When ODIN says "PASS" in green disconnect NOTE 20 from PC.
10. Do it carefully > hold volume down + power until screen turn black. As soon as screen turn black release volume down and hold volume up + power when you see bootloader unlock warning/ samsung splash screen release powe but keep holding volume up until android recovery appears. If you don't see android recovery but you see options like recovery logs, try again, factory reset. That is fine just select factory reset confirm it and reboot device.
11. It will take 5-7 minutes to reboot. When you see setup screen setup device connect to wifi. Install magisk open it and allow additional setup device will reboot again don't worry.
12. After reboot open magisk you will have 2 green check marks.
13. Verify root with root checker. You're done.
Required files -
7Z
ODIN 3.14X
magisk manager ( canary or latest )

So its come to my attention that even though I got a F dual sim model in the US since its subsidized payment services and knox are preventing me from achieving oem unlock on my device.
Hi,
I have a silly question, I am very familiar with rooting using Magisk. I am also familiar with flashing custom rom, but not using any Samsung official rom.
If I would unlock the bootloader + root as indicated, how do we manage the rom updates from Samsung? (I see there are hardly any custom roms now for those Note 20 devices).
Does it still work to update when any update is made available by Samsung? Is there any manual actions required? etc...

No. You have to manually update and reroot. It's been like that since day 1 you can never update and be rooted
Wouldn't the Part B work on a Snapdragon after having the bootloader unlocked anyway?
Hi everyone
I have fully root on my N980F exynos.
Tutorial:
- https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-20-ultra/how-to/guide-how-to-root-n20-ultra-t4147023 . If you after unlocking bootloader DON NOT have OEM unlock grey out, do this: https://www.xda-developers.com/fix-...y-s9-samsung-galaxy-s8-samsung-galaxy-note-8/
and continuing.
I root my device, flashed everything, but can not start TWRP recovery. Reboot every time. I used stock recovery for now.

Hi Krazzieboy. I was excited when I found your thread but disappointed with the lack of success everyone seems to have had with following your process. So, I wanted to ask exactly which model number and OS are you using with the Note20 Ultra 5G and where people could go to get the firmware. This would help clarify which version/model of this phone to get if someone (such as myself) wanted to get one of these. I just got a Motorola One 5G Ace and I hate it. I'd like to go back to a Samsung phone (my previous phone was a Note 4).

[GUIDE] How to unbrick Redmi 9C (or any other xiaomi device) (soft brick)

THIS GUIDE DOES NOT APPLY TO THE HARD BRICK, WHERE FASTBOOT DOES NOT WORK!!!
1) Download MI Flash: https://xiaomiflashtool.com/ (i downloaded mine from here.)
2) Download phone's original firmware. https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/miui/ (search the phone and select rom depending on your country.)
Remember to download the fastboot firmware.
3) Extract firmware to a folder, like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
I used 7-zip.
4) Open MI Flash and let it install all the drivers needed.
5) Reboot your phone into fastboot mode (hold power key + vol down key) and plug it into your computer.
6) In MI Flash select the folder when you extracted the firmware.
7) Click refresh and make sure the program detects your phone.
8) Down the window, select clean all (otherwise it will lock the bootloader)
9) Click Flash.
Done.
NOTE: if the program displays an error "error: no command fastboot lock /s" don't worry about it. The system will work anyways.
NOTE: recovery gets replaced by the stock one
NOTE: you can just use the flash_all.bat file to flash it, but i recomend using the program. The .bat file also did not work for me.

No. the Boot Loader is Locked.
There's no explanation about that in the 1st Post nor in other previous posts (that if the Boot Loader is locked then anybody doing this guide as it is being told, will surely find those error like me (Critical partition flashing not allowed),
so no wonder I get that error.
But then,... (before I tried this guide), it was because, after I did Factory Reset and Wipe Data) my phone was stucked on "MiUI 11 Logo' (on white background -where I can change Language and font size, but no further from that), (that's why then I tried this guide),,.. so (my point is) there's no way I can Unlock the Boot Loader first.
So, then, I try a step I watched on YouTube.
I put off the phone's back case, disconnected the battery, and so on and so on just like the video told, (EDL Flashing).
Success. (at least that was what the MiFlash Tools app told me on my PC screen)...
Put on everything back, try to turn on my phone.. but now it is doing boot loop... (and worse,.. now the boot loop is on MiUI logo with black background, even before where it was at the 1st time)
Can somebody help me?

First of all, thanks for your kindness to help me.
and, Yes I often edit my post, because my English is not good and I did many mistyping. (sorry).
I edit it to make it better and clearer (for anybody who'd like to help me, like you.. Thanks again in advance).
----------
*I cannot enter Fastboot now, because it seems there's other problem, that is, I ruin the plastic power & volumes buttons (maybe when I took off the back case) somehow, they don't work now.
*I didn't and haven't try that Xiaomi Official UnlockTool, because like I said in my previous post, I didn't know that to do the guide in the 1st post in this thread, my phone has to be in UBL condition first. And I was in condition where I couldn't enter my phone (to login to Xiaomi ID on my phone, for example).
