I found some posts about canadian G5 roots and a universal bootloader unlock. I can't post links to them because the XDA devs in their infinite wisdom don't want to let me until I make 10 helpful posts here. But if you enter the following search terms into Google it should be the top return (androidtechinfo is the web site):
"unlocking g5 bootloader all versions androidinfotech"
I've been considering getting an LG G5 on Koodo (essentially Telus) in Canada. I don't yet have a G5 so I can't test this. It purports to be a universal bootloader unlock, another post on the same site purports to be a root for Canadian devices.
Can anyone tell me if this is legitimate? The comments on the root seem skeptical, and there are no comments at all on the bootloader unlock page, which raises a red flag for me.
Doesn't work. Nothing works right now on H831 (Telus/Koodo) - I have that phone, and while it is a great phone, I need root for a couple of applications I can't live without.

I'm right frustrated now. The G5 was my last hope. I smashed the screen almost to oblivion on my original S5. The S5 Neo dropped HDMI output, the S6 I'm not sure about HDMI but it's gimped with no SD slot, and the S7 dropped HDMI too. So it's give up HDMI, or lose control of my device. Neither of which are attractive options. Koodo doesn't offer anything else. Looks like I'm going to have to try and get a european device.
What is that article talking about? Is it true?
Hi guys, I'm yet consistently looking for a way to bypass the Samsung Galaxy S9+ Snapdragon's bootloader (SM-G965W) and root the device. Please let me know if I have missed any progress on the S9+ SD root that took place from my sight. There are few links out there, but all of them want to start with "activate OEM unlock." In my case, the OEM option doesn't even exist in the SM-G965W model (in developer mode).

Even if you flash to the U1 firmware, OEM Unlock still does not appear in Developer Options.
Based on previous history over the last few years , and lack of ANY progress in this area.
Hell will freeze over before this ever happens.
Sell the crapdragon and buy an exynos, problem solved...well other than waiting 168hrs of up time for OEM unlock to appear.

A minute variance. Not that great. However its all perspective.
I would agree on GPU for sure but if you dont game it wont matter.
I was worried about the battery life before i bought mine honestly but its been great. Close to par with my pixel 2 XL so i have no complaints.
I did mean more in the sense of not being locked down, we have twrp, root, roms , kernels etc.
The snap is a paperweight in this regard.

The U and W variants are never unlockable, and as it stands now all preexisting root methods for previous devices have been patched.
The U1 variant is not, nor has t ever been bootloader unlockable. The "unlocked" in it's name refers to the fact that it is sim unlocked and can work on any carrier.
There is however a snapdragon device that does have an unlockable bootloader. It's the 9650/9600 and last year with the s8 it was only available in China/Hong Kong, but this year with the so family they are selling it in Central and South America, so there is modem firmware that works perfectly fine in the US.
I'm writing this on one now, with 4g+ and volte on vzw using stock firmware, and oem lock off and 0x1 knox waiting for RMM status normal to flash twrp again

That will instantly hard brick your device if you are successful in flashing it (most likely, you simply wouldnt be). Samsung specifically uses different chains of trust for these devices to keep US users from doing exactly this. We had several hard bricks to edl with the s8 caused by this, and were unable to fix them ourselves until the firehose programmer popped up letting us flash from edl.

Bro im not sure how up to date you are on the US snap S9 or how much experience or past history you have with sammy but there is no option for root on that device now.
You either can wait to see if it happens which it may, but historically its broken and makes the device run terrible (s7) or limits charging (s8).
Or ditch the locked down POS and go with an exynos or a HK snap version. Which is IMO the best option which is why i went exynos.
Sorry to be blunt but those are your current options.

My guess is the 960U/965U will be rooted eventually, but as the previous commented alludes to, it wont be the same as a device with OEM unlock. Long story short, you can flash system images but not boot or recovery, and as such no one really bothers to make roms for it. For a stretch I had the only G950U/G955U rom on the site.
I agree get rid of it if you can With two options existing this year for unlocked international devices, there is really no reason to go another way if you can afford it. Return the 965U if you can, or sell it online if you cant. My only difference in opinion is I think the 9650 (unlocked snapdragon) is a better buy this year, given that:
1) The Exynos has really bad issues with CPU governing and maybe something else, and
2) The 9650 works on all US carriers (mine is sitting here on VZW with a 4g+ signal and VOLTE fully functional)
3) With the s9+ being a treble device, the specific vendor should not be nearly the same factor in running a rom, as for basically anything designed for the s9 should be compatible on either version (as you will leave the vendor partition alone)

I can see that you are from Toronto as well; FYI, I have the SM-G965W model on Rogers' network. I been rooting all my phones previously, except the LG V20 and sold that for that very reason and got this S9+. My last galaxy phone was S2, and so I didn't seem aware of the OEM lock issues on the higher galaxy models. Seriously, selling the phone is a real pain, and losing its value; that's why I'm trying to find another solution. The only reason I'm still hoping to root G965W is that I have seen people successfully converted their G965W model into other rooted versions. Please help

Thanks again. If I were to sell my G965W and buy another phone, then the 9650 (unlocked snapdragon) would be your first choice? Will that work on Canadian network such as Rogers'?
Does anyone here know if the T-Mobile variant has a locked bootloader? And if so, is there any way to unlock it?
I'm wondering the same thing...I'll be going to look at it later today. Also I noticed the wifi model has the phone dialer installed so I'm wondering if the LTE T-Mobile model has phone function with the right sim installed?
I went to the T-Mobile store to look at the tab...They had no idea if the bootloader is locked or not. I'm sure it probably is but haven't seen anything about whether it can be unlocked yet. They also told me that the phone and SMS/MMS might work for a few days until the system detects it is a tablet, then those functions will be disabled. Make no sense to me why we can't have those functions on a tablet here in the US...And why even put the software on the tab if it can't be used? I told them to keep it and I'll get the WiFi tablet and just use the hotspot on my phone when I'm out and about. At least I'll get quicker updates (Maybe because Samsung) and I won't have the tons of their bloatware on the thing.

If you can go into store and view the tablet go into settings and enable developer options by tapping on the build. Then go into developer options and see if there is a switch to unlock the boot loader. I just bought the wifi model from Best Buy and the boot loader can be unlocked. I have already installed TWRP and Magisk. I think maybe the LTE version may require a 7 day wait not sure.

from almost a year back-wondering was your wifi device branded like Tmobile or Verizon? sad to see no continuity in the thread-was hoping for someone to check out the lte device in Tmobile to see if it could be unlocked or if the option was there-not many resources on internet. Does Tmobile even carry this thing anymore? thanks

Unfortunately, I think I'm being held back by the whole 7-day oem-unlock hide thing. And all the ways around it have apparently been patched by samsung. So this time next week, I'll know for sure. As of right now, I believe it can be unlocked, but I don't know for sure.

thank you so much-well I will be receiving my device tomorrow. So let the race begin-ha ha kidding will see and compare. I did not know Samsung has this 7 day wait period (like Xiaomi has a 2 week period). Oh well, time will tell Thanks for keeping me posted and do let me know what you find. I did see a post somewhere on xda for the tab s6 where the poster said he could unlock the carrier device (think it was Tmobile) but he wanted to find out if he could root it. I will find the post (again it was an old one and of course, my response (recently) has not got any response. In fact, like many, he did not follow up with any posts thereafter (several months back).

Hello Arudis I got a used Tmobile variant. But I do not see any OEM unlock option in developer settings (a prerequisite before anything can be done for unlocking b/l). Which software version is yours having? (maybe it is different because you bought directly from Samsung but does not make sense if it is branded Tmobile). Could be that you have an older version of Android-appreciate if you could let me know which software version, CSC etc yours has. I might end up returning mine if there is no progress. Thanks.!
EDIT: Returned it. Great price and condition. Just too bad-did not want to take chances with it. Good luck-seems that you should be able to unlock it per that other post I sent.

Well. I'm struggling w/ it. CSC was TMB btw. This whole ordeal has been a mess of mistakes on my part. If i can't get this unlocked in the next day or 2 then i'll be returning it myself. I'd rather have a weaker tablet w/ root and a custom rom than a great tablet that i have to run stock.
Current software version is T867USQU3BTJ1 / T867UOYN3BTJ1 / T867USQU3BTJ1.
First thing I needed to know was whether or not I could unlock the tablet for other networks and in order to do that, I inserted a sim and logged into the tablet w/ my google account. I think this is where I made my first mistake as I have a sinking suspicion that inserting the sim somehow got rid of my oem unlock toggle. I know I had seen it before I started trying 2 unlock the sim because its always the first thing I do when I get a new device. But between the sim and the unlock process I ended up rebooting too many times and it auto-updated itself to the latest firmware. Since the latest firmware, I haven't seen that toggle at all. When I try to flash twrp w/ Odin, it fails.
@ this point I've decided that I will never buy another samsung device ever. I agree but this has more to do with (if not entirely) to U.S carriers playing games with dual devices for marketing-only here does this go on, where the carriers since time immemorial have blocked calls and texts on tablets (7 and above inches) giving some bs reasons (there was a time they had this tablet "plan" and phone "plans"-those have at least merged at least for Tmobile-otherwise their servers would detect a tablet and switch you automatically to a tablet plan for your 'convenience' and maybe even 'safety' lol)....so as long as they do this, Samsung (even Apple which does the same thing worldwide anyway) have tablets that do not have phone-like functions (Samsung has this call and text pairing with other Samsung phones a.k.a buy two of our devices please AND have two plans (so both Samsung and carriers win)...) on their U.S devices (Samsung at least to their credit have this :"unlocked" cellular variants in rest of the world, Apple does not even have that-yes, I know there is Google talk and all kinds of wifi-based workarounds but that is a different topic.
EDIT-if you compare the older devices like say tab S and tab s2 (the carrier variants and the international variants you will find out that even the speaker arrangements are different. I delved deep into this and found that even the boards were different-the lengths they went to do this to keep the versions distinct is amazing!) folks here on xda etc kept thinking for a while that they could simply flash the international ROMs (never mind the b/l block or hurdles) but the partitions were not even the same let alone the modems, and the actual hardware itself!
So blame the carriers-I do. So I never get these carrier devices (first time I tried my hand at it-no more)
Having to perform a soft boot tonight I noticed an "unlock bootloader command" in the softboot menu along with "cache clear" along with the always present "factory reset". Which I have to perform anyway because network mode locked to 3G only and no option to change it back so it has major conectivity issues. I'm thinking I may try the unlock bootloader command.
P.S. Mine is the tmo version

Out of curiosity which model number is your tmobile tab s6 lte? I have the verizon sm-t867v model which i re-flashed to the tmobile sm-t867u model using modified Odin 3.14. Unfortunately the bootloader remained locked down with no way to unlock it. Also what is this softboot menu your speaking of? I know samsung like the back of my hand and I've never heard of a softboot menu. Curious if this is something new im not aware of since I've been stuck with verizon brands the last 3 samsung devices I've owned...

This T867U definitely comes with the HARDWARE to text because i got it to work but it stopped.
So could this just be a matter of getting it 'Carrier Unlocked" so TMO cant decide what we do with our tab s6 since its payed for???

I have the same problem, I bought the device from eBay and now in Egypt, the device is locked to the T-Mobile network, and I don't know a way to unlock it. I cannot contact the seller to ask him about the T-Mobile subscription details, and after communicating with T-Mobile, they did not reply
Ok first I purchased the Note 20 decided I wanted to root it , 1 no oem switch at all not even a grayed out one. 2 my Note shows 2 separate two completely different IMEI numbers. Can anyone help with the bootloader oh I should mention the Note is a unlocked phone I purchased through Google with my Google Credit Card. If anyone has any ideas or anything on the dual IMEI numbers I would appreciate it.

If you have two IMEI's it means you got the dual sim version but can you provide your model? How are people supposed to better assist you if you don't provide model? Also this most likely means you got a model that can't get bootloader unlocked so you most likely are out of luck. Even if you do find a way to unlock bootloader it really isn't worth rooting and risking bootloops or bricks. You're better off just using the debloat app or windows debloat tool there are no custom roms these days like there used to for s7 or s8 or other older phones. So no need to root really. Even for ad blocking you can use an app that routes traffic via vpn for ad blocking from one of the lists.

Absolutely not possible. Samsung in their infinite wisdom decided to make the u and u1 (north American models) not have an OEM unlock option in the software because without that the bootloader can NEVER be unlocked and no bootloader unlock no flashing anything but Samsung software.

Absolutely not possible. Samsung in their infinite wisdom decided to make the u and u1 (north American models) not have an OEM unlock option in the software because without that the bootloader can NEVER be unlocked and no bootloader unlock no flashing anything but Samsung software.

Isn't the locked bootloader issue, at least in North America, more about the demands of the carriers? Particularly Verizon?

Nope because even if you buy it out completely from Samsung without a carrier you still can't unlock the bootloader in north America. It's baked into the firmware for all u and u1 devices that Samsung removed the ability to OEM unlock

Oh, I didn't even know that. I remember back a decade or so ago, when I first got into flashing firmware and all that, there was a lot of talk about how Verizon and (I think ATT) were basically demanding the phone producers lock the bootloaders. And they cited things like "safety" arguing that it was dangerous having people run unofficial operating systems on their networks. That kind of garbage. I guess that's not what it is anymore, which is even more sad.

It's one of the big talking points of right to repair now the right to use your device as you want because if you install what you want on something you own, do you actually own it?

Yeah for sure. Wasn't that part of what went into the Library of Congress basically making explicit it was okay to root/jailbreak your device?
I haven't been able to properly unlock a bootloader and root a phone since my LG3. The S7 had that ENG boot you could flash but that impacted your phone's stability. My S20, I know for a time you could pay people to unlock you, but that also made me sad LOL and I never did it. I miss being able to unlock and root "normally" but have learned to cope, I guess.

Unfortunately afaik it was only specified for apple devices not android
Hi I'm definitely considering on purchasing a a Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, but now that I read that US version bootloader can't be unlocked the question is which variant should I get International or Global? I live in US will these versions work properly on T-Mobile? Currently I own a OnePlus 7T Pro it's rooted and I have an awesome custom ROM on it. I was going to upgrade for a newer model and then I found out that OnePlus has made it difficult to do so, it was so easy that if you bricked your phone by a mistake to recover using MSM tool which was available publicly at no cost. The newer models not so if you happen to brick your phone you have to pay, at a hefty price to have it un-bricked remotely and even so not guaranteed to work properly after. Anyway will Global or International S23 Ultra function on T-Mobile also I'm well aware that by rooting, the Knox will be tripped. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

It should but I don't think 5g will be supported but other bands should work. But don't quote me on it.
