In the future, Cocos will also cooperate with Huawei in all aspects and continue to access more high-quality services from Huawei HMS Core and AppGallery Connect.
HMS Core connects developers and users to facilitate efficient application development
HUAWEI AppGallery is an application distribution platform pre-installed on Huawei phones, dedicated to providing rich, high-quality, and safe applications to users in more than 170 countries/regions around the world. As of Q2 of 2020, its global monthly active users (MAU) have exceeded 460 million.
HMS Core is a hub for Huawei Mobile Services and serves as a toolkit for app development on Huawei devices. It is a bridge connecting developers with Huawei users. HMS Core focuses on three parts: development, growth, and monetization. Each piece has various accessibility (Kits and APIs) that aim to help developers achieve efficient application development, rapid growth, and flexible monetization and accelerate developers to provide Huawei end users with high-quality applications and services.
In the development stage, HMS Core allows developers to develop applications quickly and efficiently. After the developer’s app calls the interface of HMS Core, it can use corresponding functions that are part of the HMS Core, saving a lot of development work. In the monetization stage, HMS Core’s Ads Kit, In-App Purchases , etc. can help app developers realize multi-channel monetization.
Quickly publish games to HUAWEI AppGallery Connect
Starting from v2.4.1, developers can access Huawei HMS Core with one click through Cocos Creator, and upload games to HUAWEI AppGallery Connect with one click.
Directions:
Developers can enable SDKHub in the Cocos Creator service panel and configure the corresponding SDK presets.
When building, select HUAWEI AppGallery Connect and select the configured SDK preset.
After the build is completed, you can upload it with one click through the upload window.
Help games break through the boundaries of imagination
On June 29, Huawei released HMS Core 5.0 based on enhancing the original capabilities of the service and added multiple services in various fields such as graphics and media, further improving Huawei’s core-device-cloud high-quality software and hardware capabilities, and making it open to global developers.
HMS Core 5.0 is geared toward the game field and can meet the five subcategories of game developers and publishers, including basic development, network acceleration, game innovation, operational monetization, and game security, and help game developers innovate their experience.
In the field of game development, graphics rendering technology is indispensable. The Computer Graphics Kit (CG Kit) provided by HMS Core can make developers’ applications more exquisite and rendering efficiency, and offer more immersive 3D graphics rendering effects for mobile games.
Cocos Creator will be integrated with the underlying algorithms of CG Kit, based on Huawei chips and equipment, to release greater graphics rendering performance, helping game developers create high-quality, innovative applications that enhance the gaming experience.
Huawei Mobile Services Ecosystem
Provide rich support for games
Up to now, Huawei has users in more than 170 countries around the world, and 1.6 million developers have joined the HMS ecosystem.
NEED ENGLISH SLIDE
There are also more than 200 million Huawei mobile phone users in the world. If the developer’s application can be put on AppGallery, it can be exposed to 200 million Huawei mobile phone users worldwide. For the majority of developers, this is an unmissable traffic channel.
AppGallery provides developers with a wealth of support resources, including application market resources, mobile phone resources, local marketing resources, joint operation support, and revenue sharing.
In addition, retail stores around the world are an important marketing position that Huawei can provide. Currently, there are 71,400 established retail stores all over the world, and there are 6,000 flagship and experience stores that can interact closely with consumers. If developers participate in Huawei’s joint operation and have further cooperation with Huawei, their applications will appear in these activities. Through the joint operation and joint marketing, the game can quickly gain user growth.
As a world-renowned interactive digital content development engine, the categories supported by Cocos have covered many things in digital entertainment, cultural creation, online education, virtual exhibitions, e-commerce, and more, with 1.4 million content developers covering 203 countries and more than 16 billion end users.
The HMS ecosystem was born in the 5G era, and Huawei is the undoubted world leader in 5G. The continuous iteration of HMS Core allows developers to grow better in the 5G era.
The in-depth cooperation between Cocos and Huawei is bound to bring new opportunities to global games, especially Chinese games, in this 5G era. Cocos will also continue to focus on the field of interactive digital content, continue to provide developers with more convenient content creation tools, and bring reliable technical solutions and high-quality content supply to cooperation platforms.

Huawei Mobile Services, or HMS, is Huawei’s alternative to GMS, consisting of user-facing apps as well as core background services. The idea behind HMS is the same as that of GMS — to provide an experience that is consistent across devices and independent of the platform update. Much like how GMS is made up of app elements and core elements, the HMS ecosystem comprises of HMS Apps, the HMS Core, and the HMS Capabilities that the Core enables through its available APIs.

HMS Ecosystem has seen its monthly average users increase from 420 Million globally in July 2018 to a huge 530 Million by July 2019, while developers registered on this platform grew from 450,000 to 910,000 in the same time period, and HMS Core app integration grew from 20,000 apps to 43,000 apps. Google does not release figures for its GMS integrations, so getting scale here is difficult against the #1 player, but these are still impressive figures in absolute terms. According to additional figures revealed by Huawei, HMS Core has a global reach of 530 Million users in more than 170 countries (including China), while still providing features such as cost-effectiveness, a unified portal for one-stop integration, and precise user targeting through multiple promotion channels. Huawei also claims to be compliant with international security and privacy standards, including GAPP, GDPR, and local regulations within its ambit.
All of this will merely remain marketing points if HMS Core does not incorporate the APIs that GMS Core provides. In order to be a replacement for GMS Core, HMS Core needs to provide similar, if not better, functionality to developers, if it wishes to persuade them to consider itself as a valid option and migrate over from using GMS Core. HMS Ecosystem is currently limited only to Huawei devices, but even on its own, this is a massive subset of Android devices. Huawei alone has shipped over 200 Million smartphones this year so far, which is a substantially large number for app developers to take notice. As an app developer, it becomes essential to adapt to these devices as well as other Huawei devices that may not ship with GMS in the future. Even if GMS makes a return to Huawei, HMS continues to be part of Huawei’s larger ecosystem strategy, where the smartphone becomes the central focal point that is used to control connected IoT devices. So adapting your app to play well with the HMS Ecosystem does make a compelling business argument. You don’t want to make the same mistakes that Snapchat did when it ignored its Android userbase for years and only woke up to pay attention to them very recently.

By deeply integrating the HUAWEI CG Kit, Cocos can utilize the power and efficiency of Vulkan's ultimate rendering capabilities, which are based on underlying algorithms. This collaboration both improves the Cocos engine's 3D game rendering capabilities on mobile terminals, and helps developers produce great games with crystal clear frames on Cocos platforms.
Developers can utilize the lifelike materials and lighting effects delivered by the optimized CG Kit to craft true-to-life games with incredible ease.
CG Kit is a new open capability released with HMS Core 5.0. It provides Android mobile clients with the Vulkan rendering framework, so they can render plug-ins, and extensions.
CG Kit features:
l A high-performance rendering framework with atom-level capabilities, covering materials, models, lighting, and post effects, which helps developers apply Vulkan more easily when developing games.
l Rendering plug-ins leverage the anti-aliasing algorithm and multi-thread rendering components.
l Extensions including Smart Cache and Pre-rotation, which improve graphics rendering performance.
In the future, this Kit will bring revenue surprises to developers with more cutting-edge AI-powered rendering technologies on mobile platforms, including the super-resolution technology, automatic 3D face modeling, and automatic animation generation.
Building a collaborative game ecosystem
From the time Huawei announced it was fully opening the HMS ecosystem in August 2019 through to the end of Q1, 2020, the number of registered HMS developers reached 1.4 million globally, and the number of apps integrated into HMS Core jumped to 60,000, a 115% and 67% increase respectively. Access to many of the open services also greatly increased, indicating an early success in the construction of the game ecosystem.
With the release of HMS Core 5.0 on June 30, 2020, Huawei launched CG Kit for computer graphics, Scene Kit for graphics rendering, AR Engine for AR game development, and hQUIC Kit that provides faster and steadier game downloads and updates. Developers can use the new HMS Core to design more innovative gaming experiences.

Social media has long been a ubiquitous presence in most mobile users’ digital lifestyle. There are more than 4.33 billion social media users in the world with 99% of them accessing the platforms via mobile. Needless to say, competition is at an all-time high especially for incumbents who have the technology to compete but are overshadowed by its older competitors.
Among these aspirational challengers is Likee, the short video creation platform that is making waves among mobile users globally and boasts cutting-edge video shooting and editing tools. Being a young company, they wanted a platform partner who could not only help them grow their userbase, but also offer the support they needed to enhance the overall user experience of the app.
Huawei was the ideal partner for Likee – the developer could not only onboard AppGallery, the top three app marketplaces globally, but also leverage the powerful HMS Core to improve on the app experience. As a result, the collaboration turned out to be overwhelmingly positive – the app was able to resolve its technical issues as well as grow the platform’s userbase to more than 115 million monthly active users.
"We are excited to work with Huawei and bring Likee to millions of AppGallery users,”Likee expressed .“The Huawei team not only demonstrated keen insights to our app, but also actively worked with our developers to further optimise the experience on Huawei devices. We are touched by this dedication, and we look forward to more opportunities down the road to work with Huawei again.”
Facilitating engagement with enhanced sign-up process
Prior to the partnership, both visitors and existing users had to go through a multi-step log in process before they could engage with the content on Likee. This wasn’t ideal especially for simple engagements such as editing a quick clip or even liking and commenting on a video, as the friction point risks user abandonment.
As such, the Likee team integrated the HUAWEI Account Kit which facilitates simple, secure, and quick sign-in. The Account Kit enables users to easily sign up or log in using their HUAWEI IDs, making the entire process effortless and seamless. It also offers multi-device support so that users can enjoy access across different active devices, providing outstanding convenience.
In addition, both Account Kit and HUAWEI ID are designed with users’ privacy in mind. The HMS Core capability supports two-factor authentication (2FA), and complies with GDPR as well as industry-standard protocols such as OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect. Similarly, HUAWEI ID, a service provided by Aspiegel across Europe, is awarded with the European Privacy Seal certification. With these security measures, Likee provides its users with a peace of mind which encourages adoption among them.
Delivering content to users efficiently and competently
Likee also integrated the HUAWEI Push Kit which provides Likee with a powerful push service that promises a message delivery rate of 99% within 10 minutes.
The Push Kit boasts a global coverage of more than 230 countries and regions, and a highly capable distribution channel that can handle upwards of tens of billions of messages. By leveraging its capabilities, Likee is empowered to notify users about the latest viral content on the platform in a timely and accurate fashion, incentivising users to revisit the app and facilitating greater user engagement.
Monetise traffic with quality and privacy in mind
Likee also adopted two additional HMS Core – the HUAWEI In-App Purchase (IAP) Kit and HUAWEI Ads Kit – to monetise its highly impressive app traffic.
The team at Likee was able to introduce a convenient and secure in-app payment method with the IAP Kit. With the HMS Core’s support for multiple mainstream payment methods, it creates convenience and facilitated greater volume of in-app transactions. In addition, all data involved are encrypted and anonymized, empowering Likee to provide users a safer payment environment which encourages users to make more in-app purchases.
Along the same vein, the Ads Kit offers Likee access to the HUAWEI Ads Publisher Service that enables it to display high-quality multimedia content across six distinct formats – such as Banner, Native Rewarded, Interstitial, Splash and Roll. The variety helps the developer to promote ads in novel ways, appealing to user and encouraging click-throughs
In addition, the Ads Kit uses the open advertising identifier (OAID) – a non-permanent device identifier – to help developers personalise the ads while protecting users’ privacy. The OAIDs can then be used by third-party tracking platforms to provide conversion attributions and improve the monetisation of the app. This results in a win-win situation where Likee users gain exposure to products and services that they are interested in, while the developer generates revenue to drive further app innovation.
AppGallery provides strong growth opportunities for all developers
The HMS Core integration, on all accounts, was a huge win for Likee. The team not only enhanced app features and added Quality-of-Life improvements, but they also achieved remarkable growth – the global userbase bloom to more than 115 million active users with a 30% jump in revenue. In addition, more than 80% of all Huawei users are using their HUAWEI IDs to access Likee, signalling the strong popularity of the Kit among the community.
The entire collaboration serves as a testament to Huawei’s technological capabilities as well as commitment to its partners. Throughout the partnership, Likee had access to a dedicated technical support team from Huawei that actively assisted with the technical process which allows the developer to finish the integration in just four weeks.
