Is the trackpad on the keyboard case complete trash or did I get a defected unit? - Samsung Galaxy Tab S7 / S7 Plus Questions & Answer

2 finger scroll seems to work 70% of the time. I have no clue what clicking the button does. Sometimes it behaves as a 'back', sometimes a 'home', sometimes a left click. Doesn't seem to work when you click and drag, cuz when i click down it moves the mouse due to the sensitivity. There is zero palm rejection so I had to turn off the '3 finger tap gesture' option, but it still seems to be wonky. I've updated to the latest s7+ firmware. Not sure if there is any keyboard case update.
This being my first keyboard case with a trackpad on android... this is kind of disappointing? Hope its just a defect in the keyboard case....

been using it for the last 48 hours. this thing is absolute trash. track pad is horrible. keyboard is too flimsy and doesnt really fit straight every time its closed up.
also not a fan of how the mouse pointer doesnt really go away when watching youtube or any other sort of video app
keys are nice and clicky tho.

I love the Keyboard. Immediately after first use a firmware update for the keyboard (so its not related to the S7 plus update) came in, that might have improved performance. I haven't found a way to check for keyboard firmware updates yet, let alone to install it, but you might need an update for better performance.

interesting. looked around and don't see a way to force that.
It's not the biggest deal overall, found a BT mouse in the house that just worked better regardless lol. Still a bit of a bummer. Glad I only paid like $60ish for this.

[Q] Menu button flashing issue

Hi to everyone in this forum. I've recently received as a present a new toshiba folio 100, but, since I'm experiencing an annoying menu button flashing, I've thought of it as a software problem so I upgraded the folio using the foliomod1.3c and applied the rotate patch and also the 1.3c fix patch. The menu still flash with no apparent logic. I've tried to kill all applications running and it's still there. It seem to come up and down at random. I ask to all in this forum: do you believe it's a hardware issue or is a software issue? Because if it's a hardware issue I'm going to try to have a new folio from toshiba. I'm overall very pleased with the work that Dexter made to make the folio an usable machine but this flashing is driving me crazy. I use the folio basically as a portable scientific pdf reader so I need to concentrate on what I read and this flashing is really annoying. I would like very much to thank you all in this forum in advance for all the suggestion/help you could provide.

I have a request that serve All those who suffer MENU crazy button .
Is it possible to prepare application you can setting ON/OFF the MENU button
Most of the time useless button.
sometimes button jump after 10 minutes, sometimes after an hour
Usually I fix the problem by changing the settings with FolioButtons 1.1.
If you could add to FolioButtons on/off operation for menu Buttons was the best.
Hi teknoraver,
Can you add enabled/disabled menu button in foliobuttons application ?

I am pretty desperate about this issue, because none of the methods seem to help...
Right now the buttons work opposite- Menu button flashes mad and none of the other 3 responds...dont know how it happened
Just a thought- while the folio is booting up the menu button ALREADY flashes! I have zero understanding in there but isn't it a process that loads / starts early in the line?
I appreciate everyone's effort trying to solve this bug as it makes this handy tool a useless pile of crap.
I was wondering how many folio users are suffering of this crazy buttons madness.
Mine was crazy from the very beginning; I sent it back for repair and toshiba only did a firmware restore... Nothing changed at all!
It makes my folio almost unusable!
bye bye crazy buttons
After two weeks of testing and a complete breakdown of my folio100, I finally find the problem or just crazy buttons and freezing of the screen.
I drag a thickness in the screen in the bottom right corner of the screen to isolate the audio connector and it works better than a miracle again.
The only downside is that the screen comes out slightly from the slot but nothing really bad.
The thickness I put slightly too big or-1.4 mm I'll Demount next week to put a finer and I'll try to take pictures in passing.
Note however that the loss of waranty is innevitable.
Sorry for my bad english ;-)
I think it's a hardware issue and even a build quality issue.
If i hold my folio at the side of the buttons, i get the flashing buttons problem (even the foliobuttons app will not help), if i hold it at the other side, i've got no problems at all.
Do you have an animated background? Because I saw that some people had this issue with an animated background...
Hi Mshr73, nice first post indeed
Could you post some pictures of what you did?

I really don’t want to be too quick on this, but Dexter’s 1.4 seems to bring relief to this issue - for 2 days I have been running this mod the menu button stopped flashing!!
Any similar impressions on this?

No way pal, I guess I'm in the opposite situation. It still happens to me, and sometimes I think it even got worse... well, I can always look at crazy keys as a "special feature" that no other tablet will have!!!
I just tested without thickness under the screen, with foliomod 1.4 and after a few hours I again the problem of crazy buttons.

Well, I just finished dismantling e reassembling my Folio. Following your hint, I cut a piece of paper and put it between the audio connector and the back of the screen (yes, it was metal vs metal). I'll see whether it's gonna work or not. Crossing fingers for now.
Not that I'm so confident in leaving a piece of paper stuck right where the DC input is .
BTW, did you try with a smaller thickness? Even if this is the problem, I'm wondering whether a piece of paper would be enough or not.
thyself can someone. post pictures of before and after details?
we will be much appreciated
i didn't have the crazy buttons issue this far in 2 weeks, just my home butten needs to be pressed harder. I'm pretty sure it's hardware related, i read often that users experience it when changing from an warm room to a colder one, or in regions where its verry humid(some circuit closes maybe...). so Mshr73 is on the right way as far as i can tell.

I'm looking forward to your pictures, too... because my trial simply didn't work.
I tried with both a single piece of paper and then with 2 pieces wrapped in tape. I put these spacers between the back of the display and DC/audio connector.
In both cases, the crazy keys phenomenon started to happen after 15-20 minutes of usage.
In most cases, it starts to show when I unlock the device. As soon as I unlock it, home and menu buttons light up with no apparent reason and go crazy for 10-30 seconds.
Then, I even tried to loosen just a little the screws (I read, somewhere in the forum, of a guy who said that he solved his crazy keys and screen lag problems this way). I mean, all screws are now locked but not too tight. Well, I have to say that I don't have any screen lag anymore (I even removed the piece of paper, from the battery area, which used to solve the issue before) but crazy keys still happen. I'm going slightly mad

Well ... with a piece of paper the problem Come back.
I handed a piece of cardboard and the problem disappears.
I think that to raise the screen to solve them but I'm still not 100% sure.

Keyboard Dock thoughts

Just got the dock today and wanted to share a few thoughts..
kind of clunky to attach but may just take some getting used to. Once attached feels just like a netbook
Loving the keyboard shortcuts. There's even a key to take a screenshot!
Have been trying to figure out whether there's any need to touch the screen when docked. Only thing I see so far is unlocking the tablet. You can even scroll within widgets
Wondering if there will be any apps that will allow for remapping keys. (i.e. assigning a key to custom app or shortcut
The overall feel is very nice and compact. The piece that holds the tablet looks weird when it's closed though.
The whole thing fits inside my Gtablet sleeve perfectly.
All in all, worth the money IMO. I can't stand typing on a touch screen and I can see that this will be my primary method of typing on this thing.
Post edited to remove thumbs up. Not stable at all

Have you encountered the glitches with the touchpad being activated and the keyboard suddenly not responding? a number of us have including me. Disabling the touch pad seems to prevent the disconnections but really annoying nonetheless.

I've experienced it as well. Hopefully the next update will correct the problem, since the touchpad functionality w/gestures is very nice (when it works).
BTW, how do you disable the touchpad???
not once. been using it all day, in and out of the dock

Where was you dock from?
What firmware does your dock have?
Oh great! Now I'm starting to have issues.
1st I noticed the I was missing all apps from my home sreen. Dock/Undock fixed it.
Then I notced a big time lag in my typing. No biggie still better than touchscreen.
Then while playing around in Gallery I lost dock. Dock/Undock fixed it.
Also, the wifi is beginning to intermittently turn off. hitting wifi button fixes.
Now the lag is more noticable. Typing with it now and the letters show up about 1/2 second later. Sucks cause I was just beginning to learn neat tricks with the dock. For example, I was using 2 fingers to scroll, but learned it's easier to just hold 1 finger still and use the other finger to scroll.
Hope there's firmware fix made available soon.

Thanks - I'm running the latest firmware as well for the tab. I'm assuming the dock firmware is what it shipped with (EP101-0207).
One other question: When the dock freaks out, does your battery status icon show a question mark over it?
No refresh button is a real bummer. I think this button is far more useful than say, the auto light button.
The backspace button is also really far for those of us who have smaller hands. But, this is something you can just get used to.
Does the hardware keyboard support languages other than English? Can you change the predictive input dictionary language and/or the keyboard layout?
Can you type, for example, German or Japanese on it? What about typographical symbols that don't have a dedicated key (like dashes)?
Delay, there are supposed to be regional keyboards available in the future.
I don't have mine yet, so I can't expound on detail regarding settings in the TF, but I doubt one will be able to simply change the language of the keyboard without changing the language setting of the whole OS. Also the keyboard will probably still output English characters.
Got my dock yesterday, and UPS just dropped off my TF a couple hours ago ( ).
Anyway, I just 'mated' the TF to the dock for the 1st time, and it did not sound good / did not go well. Didn't want to go down, and it seemed like it was getting hung up on something. I slid the latch over, and pulled the TF back out and a tiny little piece of black plastic fell onto the desk (very tiny... like 1mm x 1mm).
I finally got it to dock ok, but the little sliding latch isn't automatically sliding all the way to the right. It only goes about 1/2 way, then I have to sort of help it along to get it all the way over.
Anybody else had this problem? I'm wondering if I have a faulty dock.

Is it supposed to go all the way over? I've just assumed that it was designed to only go halfway. Now I'm really curious what other people's docks are doing.
Mine only goes halfway if my TF isn't clicking in completely to the dock. It does go all the way over as long as I push down and get both sides to click in.
I haven't had any problems with the dock yet, no problems with wifi, no problems with touchpad *knocks on wood*. I did experience some lag typing into forms, but no more so than with touchscreen keyboard on stock browser, so I don't think that was dock dependent.
The only issue I have with the dock is I don't believe there's a button to the multitasker. I want to be able to move between programs more easily while docked. I don't want to have to touch the "monitor" every time I want to multitask. Also, I need the touchpad to register pinch to zoom. I'm hoping these get updated soon.
Has anyone tried an SDXC (not SD) card in their dock yet?
Yes it is suppose to go all the way over. If it's not going all the way over for you, then the transformer is not COMPLETELY flush with the dock. Meaning that, when you close the transformer down with the dock it should be smooth all the way around.

This keyboard dock is quite abysmal as far typing quality goes

I don't know what it is but it seems be easily interfered by something. Whenever I'm typing just as I am doing right now writing this thread what happens is those two blue arrows pop-up midway while I'm writing up my sentence and the next thing I know my type cursor has jumped up two lines above and I'm writing over my previous text.
Then it's a trial to get the type character back at the end to continue typing. For some reason clicking at the end using the mouse cursor has no affect, the cursor will move right back to whatever area the cursor jumped to earlier. So I have to use the arrow keys to move it back into the right position.
Also, does anyone know a 'select all' keyboard command for Android OS? Oh it exists, but it does not work in the text box window as I'm typing this.
I can't be the only one frustrated with the extra and unneeded difficulty it is to type on this dock where it certainly feels like it could be easily remedied if ASUS done more testing with it.
It's because you're touching the mousepad while typing. Try to disable it, 4th button from the left, on the top row on the keyboard.

Nah, I'm only seeing this happen when I'm writing something big. A short line like this the problem doesn't occur. I try to key my thumbs up in the air so I don't touch the trackpad, cause lord knows I wish it did have a traditional 'mouse pad' instead. Maybe part of my hand is reaching over a bit, but I'm not seeing that as the cause. Typing on this thing just feel buggy.
and yes I'm running the latest ICS version. Got my dock on the same night ASUS pushed the 4.0.3 update.
Not experienced this on this keyboard but have experienced on other small sized boards. its always my chubby mitts getting in the way. palming the touch pad or accidental hitting arrow keys etc...
I was only thinking how well i could type on the board considering its size. Much prefer it to my old netbook keyboard.
I turned the pad into gesture mode and it doesn't seem to jump around as i could imagine it would, maybe try turning the sensitivity down, i had to do that as i found it impossible to control under the default settings.
otherwise my only gripe is that i cant work out how to change the hotkey apps, i.e. change the browser it loads
Just turn off the track pad while typing and you're all set. Problem solved.

There definitely is some kind of glitch when typing in a text input box a web page on ics. I see it on the tf prime as well as on my gnex. Sometimes you have to just accept where the cirsor has landed and delete and re type stuff. Grrr.

I get the same thing occasionally. I'll have to watch and see if I'm accidentally touching the trackpad. If not, I'll have to accept it as a quirk, because otherwise the dock is great for me.

Try...turning off trackpad for a while and see how it performs.
Seriously, even if you THINK you're not inadvertently hitting the touchpad, try turning it off. I get the same thing on my HP Envy 14, and I end up turning its touchpad off when I've typing longer copy as well.
Drives me crazy, and that freaking Envy has been on the market for two years now and they haven't fixed palm rejection yet.

I think that is further evidence supporting the hypothesis that you're probably touching the trackpad. When you're writing something long, chances are you don't consciously manage your thumb location the entire time as opposed to when you type something short.
So just as everyone else has said, manually turn off the trackpad.

no my hands are quite normal size.
but to end this thread.
it's indeed maybe the over sensitive trackpad, and I noticed the button on the keyboard dock to turn it off.
Still doesn't explain away the broken select all function, but I guess that's the faulty default browser.

Actually did you ever figure out why when you click somewhere the cursor doesn't follow? This has nothing to do with the keyboard dock and I find this to be the most annoying thing I end up having to arrow over to where I was to place the cursor.

Coming from 7 months of TF101 use, I know damn well to shut the track pad off when I type. That changes exactly NOTHING. What happens with almost predictable regularity is the cursor, in these text boxes on XDA and other web sites, jumps all the way to the beginning of the text: Top left, in front of the quote, or whatever text is in the box.
I have not done enough typing in word docs etc, to know if it happens there, but I think the issue is prevalent to these text boxes... and it is annoying as hell. It did it in the last paragraph, halfway through the word "regularity wit the second part of the word ending up as the first characters in the box...
WTF!!!
Oh... and as jdbaker notes, you cannot just touch where you want the cursor to move to, with fingertip or mouse (unless youtry several times, but FIRST click into the box with finger, and... this requires toggling the trackpad on, and then off again after it does it's crappy job.
For what it's worth, I DO NOT think these issues are the fault of the Dock/Keyboard) or at least not entirely. It seems to be a poor implementation in the browser/ICS/Keyboard combo.
While I am *****ing, ICS Dictionary is crap. Ma - go read the rest up in the top left where the Cursor just jumped... AGAIN. That's the best way I can get you to share my pain, LOL! Ahem! As I was SAYING, the dictionary is sorely lacking in corrections, or ease of use. At these text sizes (yes, I know I can increase text size or zoom) it is very tricky to select the right correction consistently Sigh! Anyone notice it's hard to determine which letters the cursor is between, also?
It just needs work, these things ARE fixable. As soon as Asus gets all the BIG **** fixed, perhaps they can help with the small stuff, LOL! (Google could be fixing stuff as well)
If had no issues with the dock it kinda werid to type on but im geting use to it. But no one person is the same, so what works for me might not work for some.
I had the same problem, but as others suggested I turned off the trackpad and it was fine.
But it seems you are having a different problem correct? How is the typing otherwise, any lag? When I got my dock, there was an upgrade. This was post ICS.
Just throwing this out there, your pretty sharp I am sure you did all this...so I fail...lol..carry on

I've been using the tab all weekend, with the dock attached and had absolutely none of the problems you describe.
it's quick, it's crisp and accurate, the cursor doesn't stray and it can keep up with my typing speed (85wpm)
hate to say it but you might have a duff dock.

[Q] Touch issues even though i have the latest FW?

Hi, i have had my tablet for about 1 week, straight after starting it up i had a fw update which is 17.1.1.A.0.402 which i am assuming is the latest?
anyway i have read a lot about the new fw was supposed to fix the touch issues?
I also have the z1 which i still have and is perfect. ive recently updated to 4.4.2 on that and all my issues are fine on there.
my z2 is acting very strange, if i leave it alone for a while sometimes i will go on it and everything on the screen will be frozen, i can't tap anything, i have to press the power button and then swipe to open it again, it is then fine after that.
also i have noticed, and i think its happening a lot when my tablet is a little angled using the case, the screen will be a bit jittery, where as my z1 is really smooth, and i also sometimes have to really tap icons a few times before they register.
i play clash of clans a lot and its been a bit difficult to play as troops aren't selecting as i am tapping on them.
has anyone got any advice?
I have done a factory reset to see if that would fix any issues from the fw update but its still exactly the same.
Thanks
James

I installed the new firmware yesterday. While I notice an improvement with the touch problem it's still present. Just install an multitouch app (like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.easylabs.multitouch), let your finger trail on the screen and it's definitely obvious (the number on the top right should be the number of fingers touching the screen and it's often not). I tried the same thing on my old Iconia A500 and that's the one thing where it's WAY better than the Z2.
I don't experience anything as strange as you do though, it's mostly usable and I hardly notice it with the new firmware.
I did experience something very strange just BEFORE updating with one specific charger and one specific USB cable , the tablet wouldn't register any touch at all while it's was plugged in. As soon as I unplugged it it would work. The cable was fine with another charger and vice versa;
Weirdest of it all:
This happened while I was testing the output current for each combination of cable/charger and this particular couple was the one giving the "best" results; consistently between 1.1A and 1.2A
I can't reproduce this behaviour with the new firmware. All in all, it's usable for me. Biggest bug would be it not charging while playing power consuming games.
I have found mine goes more weird when it goes to sleep and i then wake it up, the screens sensitivity seems to be terrible, i have topress the off button and then start it again then its fine.
it will then mostly stay fine until the screen times out again then the same thing will happen when i wake it.
James: Same with my 521...
Touchscreen response was REAL BAD after updating to .402, then it went better and better day by day; strange phenomenon.
I also occasionally experience some touchscreen "numbness" after waking up the table with a double-tap, sometimes touch sensitivity suddenly becomes quite low just without any reason; touchscreen has problems detecting touches near the screen corners or doesn't react to touches at all. Solution: Switch to standby, and back on.
At the same time, the Android symbols (Back, Home, last apps) again become difficult to hit.
You can test this by slowly swiping your finger up from the lower bezel towards one of the symbols: If the touchscreen is ok, symbols get highlighted right after your finger reaches the lower edge of the symbol. If the touchscreen malfunctions, you need to move your finger up to the center of the symbols to get them highlighted.
So it smells like a software issue.
Touchscreen problems usually occur two to three times a day of normal use; so I regard it as acceptable - but the problem still isn't fully solved.
I would say it's a hardware issue which Sony attempts to counterbalance with software patches.
Just like on the Nexus7 (2013). There sfhub released a touchscreen fix which made the problem bearable for most users (with some experimenting with different versions of the fix, because each device is different).
I wrote a PM to sfhub asking him whether he could disclose how his fix works so that Z2 Tablet users perhaps could apply a similar, variable, tailor-made fix to their individual device.
No response, unfortunately.
Perhaps some of you could send the same request to him, and perhaps then he reacts?
every now and then, after double tap to wake, the tablet is extremely unresponsive.
I also just sleep/wake up again via power button and it's fine after that.
So my but feeling it's a software issue, not hardware issue.

I never had touch problems but after updating to the latest firmware, the tablet is unusable from time to time
what's annoying me is that Sony wont seem to admit that there is an issue, i was talking on their live chat to support and they said that's the first time anyone's mentioned that and isn't on any list of any known issues
Which doesn't fill me with confidence on how quick this may get fixed.
The speed in which is gets fixed may determine if i just send the tablet back to Amazon for a full refund, unfortunately i have bought the Sony case and magnetic charger now as well
I'm just really puzzled what to do, what can i do apart from sent it back if Sony wont even acknowledge they are aware of the problem and will release a fix soon
The only thing is because i have now bought the charger and case, i kinda want to keep it.
It was a direct replacement for my Z1 which i still have, and that is also updated to 4.4.2 now, but that shows no touch issues at all.
What's very interesting and revealing:
When Sony was addressed a few days ago regarding battery problems on Tablet Z and a few phones after the Kitkat update, they immediately reacted!
They readily explained that it is a problem with the Google Play Services running amok and that a fix will come.
But it seems that just because this here is a Sony problem (and not one for which another company can be blamed like in the above one), Sony simply doesn't react at all and obviously orders the service employees to lie and say that they haven't heard at all of a touch problem.
Boooo, Sony, shame on you!

HAHA ! Exactly the same in Germany. Even after talking about that issue with the SAME person three days in a row, I still was told the problem was totally unknown.
Later, I had a more private talk with one of the support guys. He revealed to me there was an order from Sony to tell callers exactly that.
Ah, as I thought.
This is abysmal behavior by Sony, period.
Also on the Sony support forum, none of the official support staff has replied to any of the topics about touch screen issues. It seems they are just completely burying their heads in the sand...
FW .402 didnt fix the touch screen issue. It is noticeably better than any FW from before.
Gosh, the touchscreen keep going back to home when i'm in a middle of fb conversatuion.
I was testing with chromecast +youtube: those swibe action to enlarge or fade out afe 99% imprecise...
Really wondering if I can return the item to amazon to fix this problem...

Are you sure you're not just accidentally touching the home button while typing? That happens to me from time to time, which is a downside of having the navigation buttons centered compared to having them in the corner like on pre-4.4 Android tablets. I actually think Google should add a setting to choose if the navigation buttons on tablets are in the left corner, centered, or in the right corner. Having them centered also makes it awkward to reach these buttons when holding the tablet with two hands.

General Zenfone 9 experience so far

Had the Zenfone 9 for a little while and thought I'd share some thoughts. Been using the device for as my main machine for basic work (email, document writing, ssh/remote management, video calling) and personal applications (social media, reading, watching videos, not gaming). Here's been my experience.
Size/Screen
despite people focusing on how compact the phone is it doesn't feel that small in a good way (especially compared to the iPhone mini). Screen size does not interfere with any applications I've used the phone for, even reading which I had some worries about before purchase. The biggest downside of the compact size I ran into was the typing experience, but that becomes much better with a keyboard that has good gesture support and some aggressive autocorrect. Overall it feels great in the hand as someone with large hands.
Visually the screen is sharp, has great viewing angles, and the brightness is good even for outdoor use in direct sunlight. I can't say much for the refresh rate since I keep it on 60 but I will say the DC dimming works a charm even if it's only available on 60 Hz mode. Touch is responsive and i haven't experienced any touch jitters, but the palm rejection is bad enough that I'd call the phone unusable without a case if you tend to hold the phone like I do.
Gesture Controll
As a long-time Oneplus user I do miss the 3 way switch for the ringer, but have found a compromise using the press and hold on the power button as a toggle between modes which has been working well for me. The other smart key functionality of swiping on the power button I've turned off as it's way too easy to accidentally activate when held in the right hand.
The screen off gestures for media control which I enjoyed on Oneplus are here in the Asus but are currently broken, the "ll" pause gesture instead reading out the time and not pausing the video for some reason, when that's fixed at least they are all very responsive.
The back double tap gesture is very inconsistent, I keep it on for the flashlight and haven't had any issues with false activations, but it often takes a few tries to activate.
Battery/Charging
Battery life has been good, getting through a day of heavy use without a problem on 60Hz mode. Charging is fast but does heat up the phone, I've kept mine on ultra steady charge mode which slows down charging to dispel heat and battery longevity issues (around 10W, normal steady charge is around 13W). The charger that came with the device is a C to C charger with a cable that works for data and power.
Performance
I'm not a mobile gamer so I've yet to push the processor in any meaningful way, badly optimized apps that I have had issues with in the past all work smoothly. Video playback/acceleration have been smooth as well as processing large file transfers. Boot up and restart times are very snappy.
Networking/Connectivity
No issues with my Canadian SIM, dual sim works fine. WiFi hasn't had problems with my WiFi 5 and 6 Routers even in dual channel mode which works seamlessly on dual channel networks connecting in both bands. 5G isn't widespread in my area so i haven't had a chance to test it, but 4G+ works as expected. On the physical ports side I have only been able to get USB 2 speeds out of the USB C port for file transfers which isn't really an issue for my use and the headphone jack packs a punch running my DT-770 80 ohms without a problem.
Cameras
They're definitely cameras, I'm not really a camera guy so I wouldn't know what to look for. I haven't had any noticable issues, photos do take a bit longer than my previous phones from pressing the button to the photo being taken but I assume that's because there's a lot more photo processing going on with newer phones. The back lenses do need to be wiped off most of the time since at least for me my fingers tend to naturally rest on them. Front camera also hasn't given me any issues but I'm not a huge fan of the metal ring inside which makes the hole punch more noticeable.
ZenUI
Played around with the launcher a bit before switching off of it, seems like a good relatively stock Android experience with some quality of life improvements. Hasn't given me a reason to switch away from Niagra launcher though (which works great on this device). The pull down menu looks good but could use a bit more in the way of customizability, notifications are a bit intrusive on the smaller screen but the smaller notifications option fixes that pretty well in exchange for needing to pull down the notification shade for quick access. Some other small gripes are that the bar underneath the keyboard is unable to be turned off is quite large relative to the screen height and in the activities view the app icons are above the apps which makes things like locking apps a bit difficult one handed.
Overall
This phone is definitely a purchase I don't regret, all the issues I've had thus far are definitely fixable through updates. I haven't had any of the hardware issues I've heard others mention like rattly volume buttons. Hopefully it does well enough for Asus to consider giving it longer support and the attention it needs to get its minor current issues fixed, or at least well enough to get decent support for third party roms. The price even importing the device from HK to Canada is very competitive for what you get. If there as any benchmarks people want me to run or questions they have about the device I'll keep an eye on the responses. Also if anyone has fixes for the issues mentioned I'm all ears (palm rejection, media control, etc...)
Thank you for the nice review.
I'm still waiting for my piece.
I want to ask you, since you are using 3rd launcher, I wonder if you are using gestures or navigation bar?
Purchased from mi4canada, came quick via DHL from HK and at a good price by Canadian import standards. It's unclear when the device will officially make its way to Canada, the zenfone 8 took a long while.

I'm using gestures, they work well with 3rt party launchers. Can't get rid of the bean at the bottom but it's easy to ignore.

So my hope for Nova Launcher lives on! There was a glitch on all new mobile phones since A11. It only worked like a miracle on a couple of phones. I'm glad that Zenfone is one of them. Another reason for even greater joy.

Not that i see at a cursory look, although I'm unfamiliar with the glitch so i don't know exactly what to look for. Best i can tell it works like it should.

Just wanted to add from my experience. I've been using nova launcher prime since I got the phone (over a week ago). And I have noticed that rarley but sometimes when you press the home button or unlock the screen you will get a blank screen showing only the wallpaper and only after you press the home button for a second time will the home screen actually load.
FYI I am using the navigation bar (buttons) and not the gesture one (I just hate the incompatibility with a lot of swipe supported apps e.g. Gmail, Solid Explorer etc ) so take it with a grain of salt if you use gesture you might not encounter this problem.
I have also encountered some other minor bugs but overall I am very pleased with the phone coming from my Galaxy S10.

Like on other phones when using third-party launchers there is definitely a slight delay (a second or so) when using the home gesture until the launcher becomes responsive and starts accepting input.

Haven't experienced this issue with Niagra after over a week of use now (or on previous phones I've put it on), may be an issue with your launcher. A second delay would be very noticable.
Cheers for the review - very helpful as am considering getting one.
Looking around at the benchmarks from different reviews, the scores vary quite a bit. It looks like it depends on which performance mode it's in - high performance mode vs dynamic mode, and according to Anandtech the Zenfone 8's performance would also change depending on which refresh rate you had it in. But many reviewers haven't said what mode or refresh rate they've been using.
Could you perhaps run the Jetstream 2.0 benchmark (opens and runs in the website) and/or PCMark Work 3.0 (play store) in dynamic performance mode? In 120hz would be fantastic or in 60hz would still be good either.
It's a bit of pain and would take your time so perfectly understandable if you don't want to, so would like to say thanks for the review anyway!
@Plasmac
All of these on 120Hz, no performance modes enabled (manually disabled for pcmark which triggered an automatic one)
Jetstream 2: 128.004
Pcmark work 3.0: 16371
Geekbench 5: 1294/4075

Thank you very much for doing all those. It's really appreciated.
The non-performance mode isn't reducing the performance by much at all. That settles it for me then, the Anandtech review of the 8 put me off, but it seems tsmc 4nm has allowed good performance and decent battery life, so the 9 it is.

The old known bug is sadly also present on this phone using gesture navigation.
Sadly the standard launcher is no substitute for Nova, so pick the lesser evil

Well thank you.
Can you try the solution via tasker? (I still don't have a mobile phone at home)
I managed to use the Nova launcher on the Pppo find N thanks to the Tasker app and this instruction:
Nova Launcher
Some lucky ones who have already received it could kindly try nova launche? I am especially interested in the transition between the external and internal screen portrait to landacape. Thank you in advance 😁😁

There’s a lot to like about the way the Zenfone 9 looks. The obvious starting place is the size – thanks to using a small 5.9in display this is a small phone by modern standards, and at 169g it’s also impressively lightweight.
At 9.1mm thick it’s not the thinnest phone around, but you’d certainly not call it chunky, and that very slight extra thickness feels irrelevant once you factor in how compact the phone is overall.

Sadly didn't work either. But from what I've read it's Google's fault and may have been fixed with A13, so maybe there's hope for the Z9 too
