It's probably happened to you before: You're scrolling through Instagram, and see a friend's post about their recent vacation. You notice they're wearing a beanie, but can't figure out the brand. This is where visual searches can step in.
What is a visual search?
Visual searches are backed by a power-efficient hardware architecture, a suite of advanced AI technologies, and some very complicated algorithms. For instance, artificial neural networks, such as a convolutional neural network (CNN), a deep learning algorithm, are commonly used in the process of image recognition and processing. These technologies help visual search engines understand and identify objects in photos and even videos, in order to generate related search results.
A visual search engine mimics the human brain's ability to recognize objects in images, using data collected from cameras and sensors. Whether you're trying to identify a plant in your yard, or a cute little puppy on the street, you can easily do so, just by taking a picture – without having to type words to describe what you're looking for in a search box.
A couple of things a visual search can do:
- Perform a search faster than a typed search
- Allow you to easily compare prices between different stores
- Support searching for multiple results simultaneously
Performing visual searches in Petal Search
Huawei has introduced visual search technology into Petal Search, to provide a better searching and shopping experience. All you have to do is snap a photo, and the app will identify the object and find information on it. You can search for a wide range of content across different categories, such as animals, food, clothes, and furniture.
To search by image, simply open Petal Search, and tap the camera icon in the main search bar. You can take a photo with your camera or choose one from your gallery. When you search for a product – let's say a houseplant – Petal Search picks out details of the plant from the photo you upload to the engine, and then processes the image data. It can consequently discover information such as how much it costs, where to buy it, and can even return images of other plants that are visually similar.
Better yet, Petal Search is capable of searching for and detecting multiple targets in an image at a time. For instance, when you take a photo of a sofa with a blanket and cushion on it in a furniture showroom, Petal Search can identify all three items at the same time and deliver comprehensive search results in a single list. This saves you the hassle of having to take tons of photos and search them one by one. Visual search technology has made shopping so much easier.
So, next time when you're trying to identify a plant in your yard, a bag you've seen your coworker carry, or solve a math problem, simply take a photo, and Petal Search will find it in a matter of seconds!

Breaking Barriers of Online Shopping with HUAWEI MeeTime Calling

"See this coat? ""Which one?
"But look at those negative reviews." "Let me see... Where is it?"
"Wait, don't buy it now! Get the coupon first!" "I can't see it. Where do I get it?"
"The red one's better." "Which red one? Red 2901? Red 2902? Rose 5411? Or..."
Sound familiar? This is what happens every time my girlfriend asks me to help her choose clothes online. I get nervous because I just can't keep up with her! Her eyes hit 200 rpm as she collects every last bit of information about each dress, and her keyword capture rate is probably about 93.6%: she's become a shopping bot.
As a mere mortal, there's no way I'm going to be able to keep up with her. She even has a lot of other crazy ideas about how to optimize our shopping experience:
She wants to voice chat because I type too slowly.
She doesn't want to hold her phone to her ear the whole time.
She wants to be able to share her phone screen in real-time.
She wants to be able to doodle and make annotations on the screen, so I don't overlook the important stuff…

Part of me wants to say “forget it, you can go shopping, but leave me out of it…”
But… part of me is curious, too. What if there was some kind of technology which could do all of this? I could finally keep up with her!
So I did some research, and… Yes, it is possible! As long as you're both using Huawei phones.
In some shopping apps on a Huawei phone, you'll see a small button on the product page.
With this button, you can activate a HUAWEI MeeTime call. Touch it, and a list appears showing all the contacts you can connect with.
Select a contact (for example, your girlfriend), and a message will appear, asking if you want to share your screen. The other party will also see a similar message on their phone.
Once you're connected, a floating status bar will appear on the screen. Your contact will be able to see your screen, or you can ask them to share their screen.
Now, if you're like me and you always get confused about the colors and versions your girlfriend is talking about, you can stop worrying! Just touch the brush button on the status bar, and the screen magically transforms into a drawing board, so you can leave annotations and doodles, and no-one will miss any vital information!
This feature is really cool, and can help solve a lot of problems when you're shopping online – it's not just for shopping! So if you have a Huawei phone, it's worth giving it a go!
Also, as this is a system-level feature, it's smoother than most third-party apps with similar functions. And it's more secure and reliable too!
Huawei calls this capability HUAWEI CaaS Kit. It realizes system-level audio and video calling among Huawei phones, apps, and partner devices. So, if you're thinking "I wish this function could be used in situations other than shopping", it definitely can! CaaS Kit Lite is now open to developers, so any app which have audio and video calls can integrate CaaS Kit Lite and make system-level calls. If you're interested, you can find more on the Huawei Developer website:

Okay, that's all I have time for. My girlfriend wants to share screens again…

PeakLens on HMS vs GMS

PeakLens on HMS vs GMS
PeakLens is an app that lets you explore mountains and peaks using AR. By pointing your camera at a mountain, you'll be able to learn more details about it. It's a good tool for anyone who loves to explore the outdoors and go mountain climbing. PeakLens uses artificial intelligence to estimate the position of nearby peaks. It is designed to be used with mountain peaks that are visible from where you're standing.
So how does the app PeakLens work on GMS as opposed to HMS? Let's take a quick look and find out.
PeakLens on GMS
On your first launch of PeakLens, you'll be taken through the quick setup process. The app requires several permissions from your GMS phone, including camera access, photo, and video recording access, and location permission. To begin using the app, you'll calibrate the compass by waving your phone in a "figure 8" motion.
Once the app is running, you'll be able to point your phone at visible mountain peaks and see their names and elevation. Your preferred unit of measurement can be changed in the settings section. The app works as it's supposed to, being a very simple way to gather quick information about your surrounding mountains.

PeakLens on HMS
Getting this app for your HMS phone is simple, as it's hosted on the Huawei AppGallery. During the setup process, the HMS version of the app was able to calibrate much quicker than the GMS version, finishing about 15 seconds before the GMS version. This is significant since the app requires you to calibrate it every time you use it. Those additional 15 seconds save you a lot of time.
Since the HMS version of the app is made primarily for the Chinese market, you'll find that the names of targeted mountain peaks are shown in Chinese. Right now there isn't an option to change the language in the settings menu of this app.
With PeakLens running on HMS, you can expect it to function just as well as the GMS option. The app does not suffer from the lack of GMS, but rather it benefits from better performance on HMS.
Interesting. But it need an option to change the language.

Instead, you can open three windows at the same time, and drag and drop files between them. Three windows means triple the efficiency!
Shopping has never been easier
In the past, shopping online meant endlessly switching between different apps to compare prices and reviews. It was exhausting to be confronted with all this information. Now though, thanks to Multi-screen Collaboration, you can now open several shopping apps on the computer at the same time, and compare information easily.
A more flexible video experience
If you get a call while you're watching a video, you generally need to exit the video, open WhatsApp, and reply to the message. This can be really annoying when you're in the middle of a video. Now, with Multi-screen Collaboration, you can watch videos and chat to your friends at the same time.
Try Multi-screen Collaboration now, and discover a smarter way to live and work.

AI Color from HMS Core Video Editor Kit Rejuvenates Old Photos

Since 1839 when Louis Daguerre invented the daguerreotype (the first publicly available photographic process), new inventions have continued to advance photography. Its spike reached a record high where people were able to record experiences through photos, anytime and anywhere. However, it is a shame that many early photos existed in only black and white.
HMS Core Video Editor Kit provides the AI color function that can liven up such photos, intelligently adding color to black-and-white images or videos to endow them with a more contemporary feel.
