Unable to enable VoLTE/Wifi Calling on Ting (T-Mobile MVNO) (LG G8X) - LG G8X ThinQ Questions & Answers

I plan to keep updating this XDA forum thread with what I find out about this problem, potential solutions, and hopefully what solves it. Hopefully this will be useful to those with the same or similar problem.
Please excuse typos...
The Solution
The reality is, prevention is the best solution here, do a bunch of research to make sure you don't encounter this problem. Read the rest of the post to better understand.
Original
Thank you in advance for reading this and helping me. (I also posted this in r/LGG8X, and am posting it here because some people don't have accounts with both. The more people that see it, the better, if by chance someone has ideas, wants to help, and has time to post the ideas)
It seems like a lot of people are having this issue, so maybe someone might have an idea.
I bought this phone to replace my Xiaomi Mi 9 (which was on the fritz, turning itself off randomly), about 1.5 weeks ago. I did my research and reasonably concluded that this phone has LTE band 12 and VoLTE; also it would be foolish of LG to not to have that. I could not find the VoLTE or Wifi Calling switches anywhere in the settings app, or in the phone app. I then dialed " *#*#4636#*#* " which opened up the "Testing Settings" (as usual). I click on the "Phone Information" tab, scroll down and find both the VoLTE and Wifi Calling switches, which are, to my dismay, greyed out.
I called Ting and they said, (after getting the IMEI), that this doesn't have LTE band 12, therefore no VoLTE. That confused me, because like I said, my research before buying had already concluded that it has band 12. The Ting rep said that's all he could do for me, so we ended the call. I did another 30 mins of research, again concluded it has band 12 with VoLTE. I also called LG themselves, and the rep there confirmed that this phone has band 12 with VoLTE, they also said "we would be more than happy to verify that the phone works with you carrier through phone conferencing". I asked the rep about about the previously mentioned VoLTE and Wifi Calling switches being greyed out, and they said that's because the phone has those 2 capabilities, but the carrier has to enable them.
I really love this phone, especially in comparison to the Mi 9 (even tho the Mi 9 is a good phone). I love the software better (even with the weird quirks that it has), and the value proposition is quite good. I really don't want to have to get a 3rd new phone in one year. If anyone has any ideas/help that would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
[Edit]: P.S. I think this is partly a problem with LG, and partly with the carriers. I suspect that LG messed up with the IMEI/etc and other important identifiers as to what the device is, what exact version (i.e. LM-G850UM, etc) of a particular model (i.e. LG G8X Thinq Dual Screen, etc). This leads to the cell carrier's infrastructure seeing this phone as incompatible (doesn't see LTE Band 12, when it really is. The cell carriers, (from my own experience with 2 Ting Reps, and from what others have said on other forum threads), can't or won't solve this problem, even tho it may be solvable. From what I have seen on other forums, some got it solved by the cell carrier entering codes on the phone and doing something on their side. If LG and the all the networks would talk to each about this problem and get it solved if possible that would be awesome...
Update - 11/04/2020:
It seems I unintentionally bought a G8X with the Canadian rom LMG850UM20e. I am doubtful, but is the hardware the same or similar enough to flash the USA unlocked rom LMG850QM? Or is there something else I can do to make the Ting network allow VoLTE? As far as I can tell, the Canadian model still supports VoLTE LTE Band 12, but correct me if I'm wrong.
Update - 11/05/2020:
Ting says that my phone has LTE Band 12 and therefore VoLTE, but that will only work on ATT. A bit confusing because (like I said) the particular rom on my phone is Canadian (LMG850UM20e), so why ATT? The explanation for that, it seems is that ATT, (and Sprint), and the unlocked Canadian version have the same sub-model: LMG850UM. The USA unlocked version has a different sub-model (LMG850QM), the rest of the world has yet another sub-model (LMQ850EMW). There are around 15 different versions it seems; see this reddit post on the different models: (can't post the link yet) title: "Hey G8X owner, what is the submodel number and regional code of your unit? And where did you buy it from? I am trying to complete this list, also relating to timing of security updates and Android 10 release." posted in r/LG G8X
It seems like all the versions (LMG850......) have the same hardware, the only difference are the roms, which seem artificially disable certain capabilities of the phone. I am pretty sure my phone would do VoLTE just fine on Ting (or most other carriers). The thing wrong here, I think, is that the IMEI and other specific identifiers of the phone artificially show that the phone does not have the functionality, so the networks don't enable it. It also seems like LG made an agreement or something with ATT as well as Sprint (separately), to release carrier-specific version (as most brands seem to do), and that the phone would fully work on their respective networks and MVNOs, at least the versions in the LMG850UM sub model group, and the USA unlocked sub-model group. LG and T-Mobile seem to have come to no such *official* agreement, unfortunately. I am wondering any of the versions work with T-Mobile and it's MVNOs out of the box, some *modifications* may have to be done in order to get it working on TM towers. There may also be unintentional bugs in some or all roms that are possibly causing, or more likely, adding on to the problem.
Obviously, I am still trying to find my around this problem. I'm considering flashing a USA unlocked rom (LMG850QM sub-model), though not sure if that's possible, or if it'll change what the IMEI and the other specific identifiers tell the cell carrier about compatibility. I also wonder if carriers have the ability to override the artificial restrictions. There is also one report of T-Mobile supposedly fixing the same/similar problem with Sprint for a customer, see u/Veshtarii's comments on this reddit post: (can't post link yet) title: "LG G8X unlocked models having issues with US carriers." Posted in r/LGG8X. Another reddit user used a cheap Tracfone sim card to make his phone work on T-Mobile: (can't post link yet) title: "Tutorial: How to Update eBay Unlocked ATT / AT&T LG G8x" Posted in r/LGG8X. I am unsure if he also has VoLTE working.
Update - 11/06/2020
I'm done with this... It is pretty much impossible. I commented on the "Tutorial: How to Update eBay Unlocked ATT / AT&T LG G8x" post, and the OP responded and said he can't get VoLTE working, even with doing that update. The only thing that could possibly work, is flashing the USA unlocked sub-model onto it. However I probably don't know enough to do it right, but the bigger reason is that it'll probably brick it. I've realized, and should realized when I was doing the research for a new phone, that ATT and TMO's VoLTE/Wifi Calling work differently. They both use propriety coding, which they license to each brand to use in the models they both come to agreement on, and a similar agreement with each MVNO under their towers. LG and TMO seem to have made no such agreement for the G8X, therefore in all practicality, no G8X will work on any of their towers. Also, I called H2O Wireless just to see if my phone works with them, but they said my IMEI is not compatible; so I'm not the Canadian model that I have works in the US at all, that makes me think that not even the versions inside each sub-model aren't even compatible with each other. There is that one situation I mentioned, where the person who was having problems with Sprint before the merger, took it to TMO after the merger and the TMO tech fixed it for him. But I think he must've been having a different problem, because his phone is probably still technically running on Sprint towers. Sprint made the agreement with LG, so VoLTE would work in that instance. Flashing is practically not a solution for most people.
I should've done more research than I did before buying the phone. That is the moral of this story; make sure you do all your "homework" before buying any phone anywhere but the shop of the carrier you are using (or plan to use). That leads me to my number one complaint with phone brands and especially cell carriers as whole: they make it incredibly annoying, often difficult, and confusing to find a compatible phone that isn't on the carrier store. And the problem with that is that everything in any carriers' stores is everything is stupidly overpriced, and then they get you hooked with pricey deals you don't want. If you're reading this, you're most likely like me, you know better than to spend more than you have to on a phone and plan in the carrier store, you know (or at least kinda know) how to get past that. I get that cell carriers want to make money, but I tell you, this is too far. Anyways, the point is, there is no immediate solution, in other words, your only worthwhile solution is prevention, doing a bunch of research. I'm done with this... I'm returning this phone and getting the vanilla G8...

I have the LMG850QM. It has no VOLTE icons while in call even if on band 12. It uses HD+ and that will be shown in dialer during call. Internet does work while in call so believe that it is working. The switches are on like yours but greyed out. Wi-fi calling does work. By turning on airplane mode and then turning back on wifi the dialer will show that calls are being made over Wifi. The OnePlus 6T has VoWifi icons in status bar and this phone doesn't. I will say that this phone gets service in buildings where neither of my 6t's would have service.

Carrier unlocking S9+'s gsm vs cdma.

This situation was dealing with the SM-G965U U.S. S9+
I recently had itekimei unlock two S9+'s. They were from xfinity mobile, which is CDMA.
The phone's work, but only on CDMA band carriers i.e. verizon, sprint. With GSM, only messaging and data work. Data barely.
Is it commonplace to be stuck with either GSM or CDMA frequency carriers after having professionally unlocked the network? Like if you had a locked T-mobile phone and had it unlocked, you'd be stuck on GSM correct?
Maybe this is a given and I am ignorant.
I didn't exactly check whether xfinity ran on cdma or gsm before I purchased them, so that was my fault, not itekimei. He's a great guy. Highly recommend him, as long as you have your radio systems correct.
Edit: I think I found the answer, and that is the U.S. S9+ is not cross compatible with GSM and CDMA. Please correct me if I am wrong and tell me how to make it happen if you know. Thank you.

The phone does work with GSM providers for calling, messaging and data. Check your preferred network type and select a different one. I replied to another thread you posted in with the setting I used that works.
Before unlocking my phone I had done an extensive amount of reading and research. If I was gonna pay for the unlock I wanted to make sure it would work for GSM networks. From what I can tell the G96U phone you have would be virtually identical to the one I have, with the exception of the carrier installed firmware. This is what would define the phone as Sprint or Xfinity. So if my phone works for calling, data and messaging on AT&T which is a GSM network then yours will too.
If needs be flash the U1 firmware to the phone as this would be the one that is on the unlocked S9 you can buy from Samsung. As a firmware for unlocked phones i believe it would be the most generically compatible with the providers for this scenario... well it's one of the reasons why I flashed it on my phone. The other is since I no longer use Sprint I dont need the Sprint bloatware.
There are tutorials on how to flash the G965U1 firmware to a g965U phone on this forum.
Also try keeping your inquiry to one thread instead of making multiple ones. Keeps all insights, discussions and etc in one spot and not multiple places.

Sorry, I had actually came back here to delete this thread after I thought about it before I read what you wrote. I was just at work my apologies. And thank you for correcting me. I will check out how to flash the U1.

VS996 Functionality on US998 Variant (VoWiFi, HD Calling, HotSpot/Tethering)

Folks,
I know there's a mixed bag of posts among a bunch of threads that cover how to get Verizon VoWiFi/VoLTE and HD calling working with a US998 variant device and I've had success with those elements but in the process, found that Hotspot gets broken.
So, here's where I'm currently at; both VoWiFi and Hotspot are critical needs for me.
I have a Frankensteined LS998 that, on a purebred US998 ROM, Hotspot works flawlessly but VoWiFi does not and I've not had any success in getting it too either.
I ended up switching back to a purebred VS996 ROM and now have VoWiFi working but Hotspot functionality fails at the "You need to subscribe" lock out message.
I have tried to isolate what specifically is different between the two ROM's that would trigger Hotspot to fail like this in the VS996 ROM but have not had any luck.
I've played with a ton of settings via Shortcut Master, compared all the files in /system/etc/dsts/joan_vzw_170626 and tried "DF Tethering Fix" and a bunch of other random stuff based on bits an pieces I've picked up all over the web but am still coming up short.
Ideally I'd like to get VoWiFi working on a US998 ROM and, just for kicks, tried these steps https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76613814&postcount=391 but it appears there is still some key VZW software missing.
It feels like getting the Hotspot working on the VS996 ROM is perhaps just something like an APN setting away (yes, I've tried adding DUN to the APN's list with no luck) so I'd be happy with either solution.
One thing I haven't tried is just flashing just the VZW modem to US998 to see if that may just bring the VoWiFi pieces across without compromising Hotspot but before I do that, I wanted to pose the question to the knowledgeable folks in these forums in case someone already has an answer or suggestion for me.
Is there anyone out there that's had some luck in this area?
Cheers,
Windza
Like you, I tried the mixed bag of techniques posted across forums to get VoWIFI going on my US998. I have also crawled hidden apps using Shortcut Master. Although there were glimmers of hope, none of the methods gave positive results.
I do have a pair of identical V30's and have thought about doing a side-by-side comparison to see if I can find the difference. One might be the Settings app itself. The bottomline is that I just don't have the time anylong to go down these rabbit holes and my will to battle with LG is attenuating rapidly. I do not need VoWiFi but HotSpot is a must so I am mostly content using the stock US998 Oreo rom.
BTW, if you want unthrottled hotspot bandwidth on Verizon, go into the APN settings on the phone and switch both APN Protocal and APN Roaming Protocol to ipv4. Then switch the ttl from 64 to 65 on any computer or device that will connect to the hotspot.

Thanks for the response... glad to know I'm not alone on this.
In fact, I lol'd at you having identical V30's and considering looking at them side by side.
I happen to have 3 identical LS998 variants (1 with shattered screen, 1 with US998 ROM and 1 with VS996 ROM) and was sitting at the dining table yesterday doing exactly that with the 2 good phones... trolling through Shortcut Master/IMS/APN/PDN etc.
As you said, glimmers of hope but no positive results.
I found myself frustrated at my own lack of knowledge and experience with cell networks and then even really finding anything solid on the internet.
It seems like there's almost a black hole or void out there on the nitty gritty of cell network setups (perhaps it's unique per provider and considered proprietary/IP?).
It feels like the answers exist in understanding what the settings mean and using the right combinations but I'm with you in that I'm already time short and my resolve is nearly run out...
I'm going to try flashing the VS996 modem to the US998 ROM today... will report back when I know the result.
Can someone at least tell me what APN types like ia, ims, dun etc. mean specifically or point me in the direction of a resource that might?

Aaaaaand... the result is unsurprising. I know some folks were reporting anecdotal improvements after flashing the VS996 modem into US998 but I'm not seeing notable difference from where I was already at.
I was on US998 20e and flashed modem from VS996 20f but no luck... last resort is to try US998 20h and VS996 20k but I'm not holding my breath.
No matter what I override in the background, the consistent element on the US998 is the two switches in the attached s/shot are grayed out and unable to be toggled on (even though their equivalents in the background are on).
As soon as I flash a VS996 ROM, these switches can be toggled to get things working.
I will be of no help... But I'm definitely interested in this!
I've got US998 running vs996 stock pie with full functionality of Hotspot and vowifi. One thing I noticed when debloating my install was that removal of the Verizon phone app would cause the phone to not boot, so my guess is their app is one of the pieces of the vowifi puzzle.
Has anyone tried running Verizon phone app on a US998 Rom?
I am in the exact same boat.
Currently running US998 on Verizon VS996 only for hotspot. I also tried to get VoLTE running via https://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-v30/how-to/wtf-lg-v30-t3790500/post76613814#post76613814 but no luck. Was able to get the Verizon app to run but it didn't help with VoLTE. Possibly because I'm on a corporate plan so I don't have many options available in the app. Also missing RCS messaging features which I had on VS996 ROM, but maybe I need to try the "beta versions of Messenger" trick.
I also tried copying the HotspotProvision.apk and odex from US998 to VS996 rom but no luck there either.
Yet-another-'I want this'-reply. I use my phone for, in order, Tethering, maps, and phonecalls, and it's frustrating that using Verizon as a carrier means we have all sorts of compromises when it comes to functionality because they are supporting ancient network tech.
I'm just worried that in a world of folding screens and bull**** edge displays, actual good devices like the V30 are going to fall apart in the dev community. If we don't have a fix soon, I'm expecting never to get one.

See my parenthetical comments.
That answers your question. Your hotspot would work on Verizon firmware IF you paid for it, like they want. There's no mystery.
Whereas on US998, Verizon has no control over how you use your data. You get "free" tethering feature on US998 firmware.
But on US998 Verizon still has control over whether to grant Wi-Fi calling to devices on their network, and they decline to do that. Control freak Verizon makes you be on Verizon firmware for Wi-Fi calling to "encourage" you to buy their hardware (even though you didn't).
T-Mobile doesn't care and grants Wi-Fi calling on US998. So, it's not "Wi-Fi calling" issue -- it's a Verizon issue.
The difference between the two "ROMs" is one is based on firmware certified by Verizon and the other is not.

Get a V30. Heck, get a V30+! You can have tethering, maps, phone calls on US998. What you cannot have on US998 firmware with Verizon SIM card is Verizon Wi-Fi calling. T-mobile allows it, but Verizon doesn't. But you still get phone calls.
My sister and brother-in-law are both on US998 firmware (former LS998 V30+) on Verizon and they both get VoLTE.
$110 for mint US998 V30+.

ChazzMatt, here's the kicker - that seemed like an obvious and logical argument to me initially as well BUT I had issues initially with not having any of the good stuff on VS996 and ended up on the phone with Verizon.
They assured me that my phone was provisioned for everything but my SIM card was very old (true) and potentially the issue... something about it being issued well prior to VoWiFi being rolled out (likely also true based on quick Google search).
This seemed like a real stretch to me but I ended up at the store with a real decent Rep/Tech (surprising I know) who confirmed that my phone was provisioned for everything but, nonetheless, also thought the SIM was a stretch to resolve the problem.
Fast forward past him having a ton of issues with my account and nicely gaming a bunch of stuff to work around their system (using IMEI/MEID's from the recycle box... lol, I tell the truth and was impressed/shocked); I end up with a new SIM but still have nothing working and he is out of answers as well.
I came back home and started massaging settings via Shortcut Master and eventually got VoWiFi working but came up short on Hotspot which is where my OP came in.
My OP skipped this detail because I thought it was fluff but, to circle back, there may be something relevant in that for the local Rep to have to game their system might suggest Verizon has a technical/provisioning issue with my device.
It wouldn't be the first time I've had a major Telco screw my services up... (I once ended up with a $12K bill in Australia due to Telstra setting my 3G phone up for old school 2G data access which was billed at ludicrous rates - ended up resolved amicably tho I had a major initial flipout).

My brother-in-law (who could sell snow to Eskimos) and my sister recently switched from AT&T to Verizon with two former LS998 V30+ converted to US998 V30+. NOT bootloader unlocked. Just stock phones.
Yes, "US998" with Oreo 20h are carrier unlocked phones (with CDMA and LTE band 13), but I know you need an already-activated Verizon SIM card. Verizon is NOT going to activate a SIM card on former Sprint LS998 V30+...
But my brother-in-law found a store rep willing to help. The guy said, "They will tell you this phone doesn't work on Verizon, but it does." He activated two SIM cards for them, let them go drive to their neighborhood and test them out. They are switching to Verizon because the upscale neighborhood they are moving to has an AT&T black hole. Only Verizon works there. (Even AT&T microcell doesn't work well, because of size of the house and thick walls. And they don't get AT&T Wi-Fi calling because it's not AT&T branded hardware.)
Any great Verizon signal. Not sure if the rep provisioned VoLTE or not, as I haven't touched the phones recently. But they are very happy. The guy told them, "If something happens and you need help, come to the store and ONLY SEE ME. Don't tell anyone else what I've done."
Nice to find someone like that, but my brother-in-law is GREAT about finding people like that. He's a very successful salesperson and knows how to make people WANT to help him. What's really scary is when he turns his skill set against other salespeople. You should see him when shopping for a car.
"What color are you looking for, sir?"
"Doesn't matter, it's just all sheet metal to me. Color isn't important."
When he really has his eye on that cobalt blue SUV or whatever...
"Oh, that one? I guess I could drive that if you've got nothing better."
When he gets finished, it's like they've been hypnotized.
He walks out with exactly what he came to get, and at fantastic price.

LG V60 5G UW (Verizon Version) on T-Mobile 5G

Howdy, y'all!
I was looking at a good deal locally to get an LG V60 UW 5G, but I'm on T-mobile. I was wondering if I could get it working for T-mobile's 5G bands (71, 66, 2, etc); or if there would be some issues as it's a Verizon phone originally (that's unlocked). From what I can tell is that it should work as it does have the correct bands. Any help or further info would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Loubar
5G may not work. I think the Verizon version of 5G uses an mm wave radio that is different from T-Mobile.
Best of luck to you though.

It doesn't work
Don't try this as I am currently stuck in this situation. I thought it would work so I bought a Verizon LG v60 and connected to T-Mobile network. Now I only have 4G and it drops to 3G to make phone calls. ? The only hope is for T-Mobile to go mm wave soon.
I have a Verizon LG-V60 UW on T-Mobile and it worked perfect on 5G in the Missouri area. I'm almost in Arkansas and I'm still getting 5-G. It used to do the shuffle where it would go from 5G down to 3G or HSPA when I would make a call which means I wasn't getting VOLTE because if I were, then it would not need to drop to 3G or anything less than 4G LTE to make phone calls. I could be wrong, but I think it's a slim chance, I suspect the deficiency is not with the hardware, i.e., the Verizon model has enough bands to support VOLTE even on T-Mobile's Sprint-T-Mobile combination of towers, (hence the ability to receive consistent 5G) but Verizon has found a way to defy the deal they signed onto when the FCC let them come in before the doors were open to bid on spectrum privately and Verizon promised to make phones that were SIM unlocked for...ever. They have been bucking that clause in the agreement ever since, but of lately they are REALLY pushing back at the FCC by locking SIMs, and the FCC has capitulated a few times IMHO by allowing Verizon to lock them under certain circumstances such as if a device is not paid off or not on their network long enough- which begs the question, what did they get from Verizon that's any different from the rest of the carriers? That is the industry standard, but I digress. Point is they want to tether their phones to their network and they have started to decide some more thoughtful ways as opposed to just defying the FCC outright by locking the SIMs, and one of them is to deny WIFI calling if you are not on their network with the V60 at least. You are directed every time the phone powers up to put in your address for 911 purposes since WIFI calling doesn't always transmit the address to the police like the E911 would on a cellular call. This is NOT a requirement, by the way, there is no law that says you can't make phone calls over wifi without appraising the police as to where to send the cops if you ever dial 911 over WiFi. But, there is no way around Verizon's interface on the LG-V60, and, as you can guess from my rant, you will never be able to successfully update your address with Verizon if you are on TMobile, or anybody else that I've seen because it will just bounce around for a few minutes of pointless waiting to come back and tell you that something went wrong and you can try again... But don't. There isn't any purpose and they know it. You won't be able to update Verizon's databases from another carrier unless maybe you still have an account with Verizon, and that's still debatable from another carrier. So no WiFi calling on other networks. Ever. Same thing goes for VoLTE. It never provisions if you are on T-Mobile. Can't, Verizon has locked the door. It did work when I first got the phone. Then, I reset the phone and since I did not have initial access to Verizon's network, it did not provision (unlock the VoLTE). Unfortunate for me, I bought my device from the internet swap site and I checked the company's IMEI checker which green-lighted the sale by giving me the false impression that the device had no blacklists for theft or financial non-payment. Then, when I tried to circumvent the new way to prevent their Verizon customers from escaping by putting in my girlfriend's Verizon SIM in long enough to provision all the barriers aforementioned, and it locked her SIM up simply because the guy sold me a phone and Verizon told me that they can say that the IMEI is good quite a while after a person sells an unpaid phone before changing their report that the phone is clear and free to it is black listed, meaning that it is almost pointless to rely on their IMEI check because anyone can sell the phone while they owe a thousand dollars on it still and then, after you give them $900, they simply quit paying and you have all the problems of a blacklisted phone even though you were told it was a-ok when you checked with them and ran the IMEI before buying the phone. It was hell trying to get my girlfriend's phone working again after they unceremoniously shut it down for punishment of putting her Verizon SIM into a Verizon phone that someone had stopped making the payments. It wasn't stolen mind you; do not put your SIM in anybody's phone if you have a Verizon SIM because they won't tell you that it offends them, they just **** your service off and now you have to contact them and if it's on s holiday weekend like it was for me, you are screwed for a couple days. I was, and I was lost- no gps and running out of gas in the middle of nowhere. Long explanation, but it could be critical if someone owns a Verizon phone or attempts to buy one and puts their SIM in it to see if it works- God can't help you if you do.
Jeesh, all that and I forgot to mention this: I now use the 5G on CDMA, but cannot make calls. I just switch the mobile network to CDMA LTE and instantly I have 5G service but only emergency calls because VoLTE is not working. Nor video calling. But when I want to make a cellular call or see my text messages I switch back to Global mode and it goes right to 3G or HSPA (most time it flips constantly between the two over and over and over) and I get my texts and am able to make non-emergency calls. It's a hassle, but what am I going to do? Verizon is the biggest bully on the block, not even the FCC can push them around, and LG bit the bullet as far as phones are concerned. SMH...
I purchased a Verizon V60 (LM-V600VM) on ebay in late December 2021 and was told by Verizon customer service this phone's IMEI will not work on Verizon's network (likely due to original account holder's non-payment fulfillment, but that private info I'm not allowed to know). I never planned to us this V60 on Verizon's network and was 99% sure it would work on both T-mobile and AT&Ts network even though it's blacklisted on Verizon's network. Well it does work on both T-mobile and AT&T networks (on Consumer Cellular plans) until just a few days ago. It now will no longer allow incoming or outgoing calls. It still does get 4GLTE data and receives/sends text messages (with photo's too). I turned on all settings I could think of but with no luck getting calls to work. I suspect calls are no longer working due to the 3G phase out requirements by the FCC to retire this frequently to make room for 5G. I also think this Verizon V60 phone does not have built-in VoLTE capability but instead uses Verizon's built-in HD voice (as a voice over network) technology to place calls when 3G is not available and used only on the Verizon network. Since this V60 is blacklisted and can never be used on Verizon's network and it looks like the 3G frequency has been retired (dropped off the face of the earth never to be resurrected again), I'm asking if anyone knows a way around my problem with not being able to place cellular calls now. I know about Google voice but that seems like a clunky patch alternative. Does anyone know if an AT&T or T-MOBILE V60 main board (motherboard) swap into a LM-V600VM Verizon phone would work in this situation???

Can you confirm if your Verizon LG-V60 UW is still able to make and receive calls while on T-mobiles network? My Verizon LG-V60 UW for some reason can not make calls now (on AT&T network). It use to without any problems about a couple of weeks ago. It now only gets 4GLTE data and receives/sends text, but calls can't go thru anymore

That's because the V60 doesn't support VoLTE anymore if you use a version of the phone not from your carrier, even then it might not work. If you use an LG v60 T-Mobile version on T-Mobile it might work, but I would count on it.
Pls LG v60 uw has; 2, 25, 41, 66, 71 SA/NSA/Sub6?
Is LG v60 uw has only 5g 260 and 261 mmwave?

I have an LG V60 from Verizon it worked awesome I got it when it first came out it always read 5G UW constantly never even saw 4G I lost that phone it got replaced and that phone worked perfectly fine as well now all of a sudden that phone got ran over and I'm on another replacement phone and it only reads 4G and it won't update my phone to Android 11 they told me something's wrong with my phone and I need to have the insurance company issue me another phone so the insurance company told me we can't send you another phone Verizon does not authorize replacement phones for Network signal or software issues. I talked to several texts from Verizon they had me reset the phone plug it into my laptop try to update the software that way none of it works it's stuck on Android 10 and they won't help me at all. And finally they telling me well your phone's going to search for the best signal it can get from the tires and that's all they can tell me so basically they're telling me it's getting the best signal it can which is only 4G I've had this LG V60 replacement phone for 6 months now and it hasn't read 5G once I'm so angry it sound real now I literally have to buy another one and make sure 5G UW works and make sure it can upgrade to 11 Android. Right now I don't know what to do other than at some point to buy another LG V60 it's the most unfair issue I've ever had with a smartphone device and Verizon is like the evil empire of carriers if you're not a business or corporate and y'all just a single person with an account take a care less in fact all they ever do is send me emails and texts to upgrade to a new phone so they can get more monthly payments out of me. I forgot to mention I bought the LG V60 when it first came out and I paid for it fully in cash. I swear because I'm not making phone payments did not quick to help at all

what wireless carrier is compatible with s10 lite? which carrier do you use with it?

So far it appears that only tmobile networks allow this phone, since at&t does not support VoLTE with this phone (must set to 3g in order to receive texts/calls). I love this phone, but tmobiles cell towers don't offer a good signal in my area (using straight talk w/ tmobile card). So this got me wondering, which wireless carriers can this actually use now days? What do you personally use with this phone, and how is the service? Verizon definetly won't work either, so it looks like I am out of options... Any replies to this would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
You sure? Here's the AT&T white list, more may have been added since...
I am positive. And yes, I have seen my phone on the list. no phone calls or text messaging when on LTE (and at&t). I looked into changing the IMEI so that I could use a random generated one that matches an s20 or some other phone that is more compatible, then gave up on it. At this point Im looking to sell my s10 lite so I can buy a oneplus 8T/Pro, just so I get better compatibility. Supposedly AT&T is also dropping support for international versions of cell phones, which this is. I went through 3 different at&t sim cards and all have the same result. I just wish there was a way to change my IMEI (or somehow spoof a different phone some other way)

Is VoLTE enabled etc in hidden phone settings?
Did you have AT&T reset it on their end?
Talk to AT&T advanced tech support.
If white listed it should work!
I have straight talk which gives three options: at&t, TMobile, or Verizon (so I can't call att directly). I went into the hidden menu settings and VoLTE was turned off and greyed out. I even opened a file and added a few lines (might have been build.prop or something like that, don't remember) and all that did was switch it on in the settings (but still greyed out).
When I called straight talk tech support and asked them to provision VoLTE, all they would say is that the sim card is provisioned, and that's all they can do. Phone and text used to work if I set it on 3g (instead of lte), but this was less than optimal. I also read a reddit post today from someone four hours away that said they killed off the 3g now, so I'm not going to try using another at&t card until I get a different phone that is compatible. I know this phone is capable of VoLTE but at&t sucks, and they want to force a bunch of people to upgrade to newer phones for whatever reason.
I've even had this phone work with a Verizon sim card swapped from a different phone, but after a few days it gets shut off. So it's not a question of compatibility more than it is at&t just being jerks.

Straight talk maybe the issue. I don't know for sure. Maybe it's the sim card.
Both my N10+'s N975U, N975U1 made the jump seamlessly, no changes were needed on my side.
However the N975U was configured for 4G VoLTE already.
On the new N975U1 all I did was plug the N975U sim card in and it was online.
I feel you... this was an unwanted learning curve for me and had me doing a lot of Google searches.

Emergency Calls Only on LTE

Hello!
Can someone please help me with this?
Everything was fine until 2-3 days ago. When all of a sudden I was unable to send text messages or make phone calls. All the while I could access internet without any issues.
If I switch to 2G or EDGE for the Subnetwork, I can make calls and send SMS.
How can I fix this?
Could dropping the phone have caused this?
Dropping could certainly break something, of course, but let's assume that's not it.
What carrier? Is the phone officially supported by them (ie, IMEI matches the carrier)? Are you on their official ROM? Does/did your VOLTE work (before and after the "few days ago")?
Some carriers are switching over to VOLTE-only setups, so they may be testing that to see what works/doesn't before they make it final. In other words, maybe your phone is not "officially" supported by VOLTE on the carrier, which is why it's failing? Without VOLTE, I think text may fail as well (even if you're not actively on a call?)
That would be my first guess. In my case, for example, I was on a US998 phone (per IMEI) running VS996 on Verizon. Since the IMEI didn't match a VZ phone, they refused to say it was compatible (even though it worked fine for many years). The IMEI stuff is a bunch of BS, but that's a whole separate topic... but I wonder if this is what you're running into. It's the carrier's way to force you into "their" device, even though it's not any different from any other variant (when the proper ROM is installed).

Carrier texts should theoretically still work as they are "data". It's the "voice" part of VoLTE that won't work. That's why I can still receive carrier texts on my Galaxy Note 9 with AT&T -- which still has older firmware (so I can be rooted). A few months ago, I lost the ability to make/receive phone calls on my AT&T number when 3G towers were decommissioned in my area... But luckily I have Google Voice number, which also uses "data" (VoIP) so I make/receive all my Google Voice phone calls. (That's been my main phone number for years.)
However, I no longer can make/receive AT&T phone number calls -- which is fine. I switched Google Voice settings to data/Wi-Fi only instead of piggy backing on carrier phone number. Yet, I still receive AT&T texts, which is good because my bank insists on using a "real" (carrier) phone number for SMS security code confirmation.

I'm with a company that uses T-Mobile towers. I connect just fine with 4G LTE, and get reasonably good speeds over it. But when I'm on 4G, I cannot make or receive calls or text. It says Emergency Calls Only.
So far, I've tried everything. I resettled network. I looked for different APN values that may fix the issue. When I couldn't think of anything else, I did a factory reset. (I mean, I wiped Data, and all other partitions in TWRP except for System and SD Card.) There have been no changes.
I'm starting to think the issue may be hardware, I did drop the phone a couple of times the day it stopped working. Though I usually end up dropping the phone once a day or every two days. I can't believe the screen hasn't cracked yet, at all. Could a drop from 3-4 feet on hard surface like tiles damage the antenna in such a way that only 4G data works?
I'm ready to give up and buy a new phone even though I can't really afford it. It would be awesome if I can get this to work.

I'm on T-Mobile towers with the US998. I don't think there is an issue with IMEI. How would I connect to data with 4G if that was the case?
I never had Volte on this phone. I do recall seeing it when I first got it but I'm running stock rooted Android 9.
When I say it used to work a few days ago, I mean it just stopped working at one point. I wanted to make a phone call, and all of a sudden, I couldn't. I noticed then that it says Emergency Only sign, so I walked around the house for about 15 mins to try to get signal. Then I went to my car and drove around, but nothing.
I messed around with Network settings, and figured out that Voice and TXT worked when I switch to a lower 'Sub-Network' setting that says, "GSM / GSPR / EDGE Only".
To get 4G Data back, I have to switch it back to "LTE/Legacy 3GPP multi"
These two are found under "GSM/UMTS Settings", after clicking on "System Select" in "Mobile Networks ".
I want to also mention that my carrier website has been talking about a data migration that would affect phones using their old SIM Card.
When I saw that, I called them and had them send me a new SIM. I thought surely this must be it, but the new SIM works exactly like the old one.
Perhaps the migration or whatever it is they did that required new SIM cards just doesn't work well with my phone? Even though, before putting the order in, the rep I spoke to did check my IMEI and said that my phone is compatible.
Agreed, it doesn't sound like an IMEI issue.
FWIW, I showed a 4G connection on a phone (I don't remember if it was my V30 or a Galaxy S10+ that I was going to replace it with). On that phone, at one point, but there was no actual connection. So, the indicators aren't always accurate. That's why I thought maybe the data isn't really working, and if data isn't working then VOLTE won't work... and with many of the carriers switching off non-VOLTE calling, that could kill the ability to make calls?
In your case, you said data worked... but if VOLTE was never enabled, and the carrier dropped non-VOLTE, then, again, you may lose calling.
In any case, these were my theories. I think you're on top of the situation but I don't have any other ideas for you to try...
Instead of buying a new phone, have you considered installing and setting up Google Voice, as ChazzMatt said? I recently had to do that because AT&T's 3G shutdown meant that I could no longer place or receive calls. My quick guide on doing that is here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-based-custom-roms-when.4138223/post-87342453
I don't know why you can't also send or receive texts, but the Google Voice app has the ability to do that, so maybe try using that after you've set it up.

There's been reports T-Mobile which is now merged with Sprint has borked the ability for VoLTE/VoWiFi calling on US998 firmware phones (native or Frankenstein'ed). Apparently they only allow it now on T-Mobile H932, whereas pre merger they were happy to give VoLTE and voWi-Fi calling to "US998" phones
First, it was reported with new SIM cards they were distributing earlier this year. Then people who kept their old SIM cards found they didn't work after a forced "security update."
This seems to have also trickled down to the T-Mobile MVNOs.
This is why we told someone else recently they should probably convert their phone from US998 on T-Mobile to Verizon VS996 firmware.
Then get a Verizon sim card or Verizon MVNO SIM card, and activate it in an old cracked screen Verizon phone off eBay, then put that already-activated SIM card into their "VS996" V30.
They will have VoLTE and VoWi-Fi calling.
Alternatively, if you really want to stick with T-Mobile network, you can do what @osprey00 suggested -- which is get a Google Voice number and use it as a tool to forward your carrier calls to it.
You can read his post, see his experiences, and see if this would apply to you.
For ME -- I've been using Google Voice for the past 10 years as my main phone number. I ported my carrier phone number at the time to Google Voice. Then got throwaway carrier numbers (whoever had cheapest plan) but never gave those to my friends. To my friends nothing ever changed. I've had the same "number" for the past two decades.
But within the past couple years, I had to start giving my bank and my cable company my carrier phone number for SMS security codes. Very annoying, because in the past they used my Google Voice number to text me with no problem.
So, even though under my current firmware (on my rooted Note 9) I cannot get carrier phone calls, I still have LTE data. And with the LTE data, I can use Google Voice (calls and texts) because it's VoIP. I also get AT&t carrier texts, as that is also data. It's just AT&T phone calls I cannot send or receive.
AT&T deactivated the SIM card in my native US998 V30+ and sent me a replacement phone, which is a Samsung Note 9. I'm staying with AT&T for a reason. Otherwise I would probably pull the "V30" Verizon trick also.
I bought both my wife and my elderly mother 64GB V35 phones -- which is basically an upgraded 64GB V30. (They previously had native US998 V30.) AT&T gives V35 VoLTE and WiFi calling, and for them there was nothing new to learn.

I think it was a hardware problem, honestly.
No matter what I did, I even tried different ROM to ensure I didn't mess around with root settings and somehow enabled or disabled something that I should not have. I tried flashing stock radios, and no, nothing would fix it.
I took my brothers phone to see if the SIM card would work with his phone, an unlocked Google FI phone. As soon as I installed the SIM, and booted up the phone, I could tell it was working perfectly even on the lock screen. Right away the status showed the name of the wireless company, and active 5G data icon on the status.
I must have damaged the internal radio or the LTE data modem when I dropped the phone last. The screen of the phone never broke even though I dropped the phone countless times, though the back glass has cracked lines all over even if the surface is still smooth and the phone continued being waterproof (I tested).
Anyway, I have since bought a new phone and the Data/Text/Talk all work perfectly on it.
I'm not sure what I'll do with this phone, as selling it wouldn't be ethical. And I doubt anyone would buy a phone with the warning that service may not work.
Ah well, I may just keep and use it as a test device.
Thanks to all who tried to help.
