Link for those of you who struggled like me here is the link to a bootunlocking software that actually shows a countdown.
That was my issue i think. Miunlock showed a bunch of Chinese characters with no countdown.
KK world unofficial was the only one that showed an hr countdown.
Good luck everyone

This is an isolated case. Most of the users on this forum have unlocked their X3 using the official Xiaomi app with no issues.
I suggest people who read this post stick to the updated and official app. Unofficial apps may only serve to increase your waiting time.

I found stock miunlock did not work as I was never able to get an English countdown. I cannot be the only one who had this issue? There are all different skill levels buddy. It says senior member but I am anything but. I cannot even compile code lol.
Just trying to help.

Can't talk about other, but as a Linux user the only solution I found was xiaomitool V2

Counter-example here: with an European v1.0.4.0 stock ROM, I was able to unlock the bootloader after the customary 7 days delay with the regular Mi Unlock tool. Seems YMMV.

Well, I got about 21 days on Global Nfc then I try it again after 2 days Then Got only 92 hours.

Is there any way to unlock the bootloader under Linux? I tried to install a Windows VM and set up USB pass through to use the tool but my computer is to poorly spec'd to run a VM. During the unlock process is the connected as a USB device or does it present as a serial port?

You must do it under windows unfortunately.
Send an email to Xiaomi and put some pressure on them to develop a linux tool or simply allow bootloader unlock using fastboot.

Maybe creating a Windows VHD will run good enough for you. FYI, here's a step-by-step that may be of help...

I'm an amateur man. Cellphones are a hobby. No idea why xda have decided I'm a 'senior member' next to my name I drive forklifts for a living an enjoy custom roms. I can't even write code lol.
I just found this bootloader extremely difficult to unlock. Every other Xiaomi device I've had it has been about a week.

I got 168 hours for my bootloader unlock. I assume I can continue using my device and then use the unlock tool again in a week for a successful unlock?

Anybody? I have never had a device with MIUI so the bootloader unlocking seems strange.

Unlocked my bootloader and flashed crDroid. I get a message saying the current user is unable to edit apn setting, so I am unable to get my data working. This happens no matter what rom I install. Any way to fix this issue?

Official unlock bootloader said unlocked, but it did not work

Need advice please. Had permission to unlock phone , used mi unlock tool, unlock completed 100%, but phone is still locked. Tried unlock again, at 50% stops and says no need to unlock, so guess it thinks it is unlocked, It is the snapdragon model which according to what I have read should unlock on global stable 7.2.3.0.
Tried to request new unlock from mi, their system will not let you request second one,I have read the unofficial method, I'm reasonable on flashing but the warnings put me off. Any ideas how to proceed? Thanks

Found a way of checking my bootloader from the following, using method 2 https://thebroodle.com/android/how-to-check-your-bootloader-is-locked-or-unlocked/, result below
(bootloader) Device Tampered: False
(bootloader) Device Unlocked: true
I guess this confirms my official unlock from Miui has worked??
I then used the following method to install twrp and root, http://www.stechguide.com/root-redmi-note-3-and-install-twrp-recovery/ this method worked but wiped out my WiFi Mac and IP address, so went back to miui 7.2.3.0 using, http://en.miui.com/thread-235865-1-1.html this reinstalled my mac and IP addresses, tried the TWRP method again, worked for a second time but still wiped mac IP address. been on this 2 days now think I will give up unless any ideas people.

What you need is make modded boot image for your ROM using "Android kitchen" its not that hard.
Please follow the first post and it has link for using it.
hxxp://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=240531&extra=page%3D5&mobile=2
Replace xx with tt.
If you have fastboot ROM then its easy to get boot.IMG, if not then boot to twrp, go to backup and select boot only. Take backup to SD card or pen drive via otg.

Had a trial run with the android kitchen, getting the hang of it, couple of questions.
1) I guess you extract the boot img from the current latest rom and not the one used in the thread.
2) once you do this, do you have to do it every time there is a miui updated ROM. Cheers

1 - yes the ROM you have flashed I guess i.e. miui 7.2.3.0.
2 - yes you have to do it as of now, I am sure developer will come with the solution.
There is one more solution, please refer to the post mentioned here about a recovery that does not need modded image. I have not personally try it but will be in near future.

[Q] How long did it take AFTER receiving the SMS to be able to unlock your bootloader

This is not aiming to know how long it took Xiaomi to send you the unlock permission via SMS.
This aims to know how long you had to wait AFTER receiving this until MiFlashUnlock would let you unlock your bootloader.
Most people get an error with the MiFlashUnlock stuck at 50% for quite some time (after receiving permission) before the unlock works as intended.
Please only answer if you actually managed to unlock your BL and not if you are still waiting.
I just want to clear up all these threads claiming you have to jump through 1000 of hoops and dance around a fireplace naked and after that the unlock will work 1000% of the time, while most likely you just have to wait some time until Xiaomi updates their servers with the unlock Info.
In mine case it took 5 days. And i was able to unlock only by older version of unlock tool.

You don't need to give message, just apply for unlocking permissions, look here - en.miui.com/unlock.
Once you successfully applied for approval, then wait few days, you'll get a confirmation message regarding the same, then try unlocking your phone.
I bought from gearbest, somehow my phone was already unlocked. Since it was my first Xiaomi I didn't recognize and applied for unlocking. After 4 days I received the SMS. I tried to unlock before with "fastboot devices" (used a Linux based OS) and it said the devices was locked. When I tried to unlock the official way the program stated "no need to unlock". Strangely with all the recommended drivers installed (now in Windows 10) fastboot devices showed an unlocked phone. Tried again with another RN4X a friend bought along with me and it also was unlocked. Well I'm not complaining, but didn't hear about unlocked RN4(X) before.

5 or 6 days, i don't remember.. i used the latest version of the tool. (I tried to unlock using previous versions of the tool, hell I even tried using the Chinese tool.. i tried every method out there on the internet except dancing naked in fire.. nothing worked)

Per MI forum: Mi Unlock often fails despite having bootloader unlock permission.

I see tons of people complaining that the Mi Unlock fails at 50%. I had that too, but solved it (somewhat) after downloading and using a newer version of the Mi Unlock (version 2.3).
Although I get past the 50% mark, the Mi Unlock program fails after verifying phone. [I tried to put a picture of the result below but XDA bars me from this practice until after I have submitted 10 posts.] Since XDA bans me from posting a picture of the result, I will try to verbally illustrate:
The Mi Unlock process runs the entire course - 100% - and then gives me green check mark and says, "Verified". The next step the Mi Unlock program takes is to unlock the bootloader. However it is at this step the process fails. Instead of unlocking, I get a message saying "Couldn't Unlock." Under those words is the following message, "After 72 hours of trying to unlock this device".
Anyone even know what that is supposed to mean? Is that just chinglish? Or better still, how can I get my device unlocked?
I SEE TONS OF PEOPLE WITH THIS SAME PROBLEM! Anyone have any idea what is going wrong? How do I deal with it? Am I to assume the message is suggesting we wait that particular number of hours before we can make the thing unlock the bootloader? Anyone? This IS a question that plagues many in the MIUI forum! And after going back roughly 70 pages into the forum, I see no solution; no answers! Just the same complaint over and over again and again.
I tried the unlocker a few times afterward, over the course of the day, with the same result. However curiously, there is one change to the message. It now says, "After 63 hours of trying to unlock this device". Is this suggesting I have to wait and try it in 63 hours?
Again, I see this same complaint time and time again on the MIUI forum for this phone. Anyone have any idea how to handle this dilemma?
One last question: How do I change out my MIUI ROM (currently MIUI 8.6.8.18 Beta) to a developer ROM? Ultimately I want to install a custom RR Rom or some other custom ROM. But MIUI 8.6.8.18 is android 5.0 LL; and the new Custom ROMs available are using android 7.0. My understanding is I need at least an MIUI Dev Rom with android 6.0 MM on the phone before it will let me leap over to some other Custom ROM with android 7.0. [I tried it. And though everything worked perfectly, (got my device rooted, and installed ZCX TWRP, etc.), it just bootlooped after flashing in TWRP. I tried it with several Custom ROMs - Always with the same bootloop. After exhaustive reading in web forums, the suggestion out there seems to be that I have to go back and install a DEV Rom with android 6.0 MM; then free the bootloader again, reinstall SuperSU (or similar), and then TWRP, etc. , and finally I will be able to Flash to one of the new Custom Rom's that uses Android 7.0.]
With this objective in mind, I downloaded the Dev Rom to my phone (7.7.20 - which is the latest for this phone). However, the UPDATER app on the phone won't update from the MIUI 8.6.8.18 Beta to the MIUI 7.7.20 Global Dev Rom. I select it in the updater by browsing over to it, then click "OK", but nothing happens. Instead of installing the MIUI 7.7 Dev Rom, the app just says that there are no updates...
Any ideas? Thanks

Please can you provide the exact steps you have taken?
IMHO this would help users like me who did follow the instructions to unlock the bootloader and run into this problem.
I did run into the problem, "After 72 hours of trying to unlock this device", even that I followed the instructions:
Create a Mi acoount (with my phone nr.)
Apply for unlocking, with giving reason
wait for confirmation sms
download unlocking tool
on the phone: activate dev options, switch on usb debugging, OEM unlocking and bind phone to Mi account in "Mi Unlock Status"
reboot phone in fastboot mode
run Mi Unlock prog on PC and log in
when prompted connect phone
The Mi unlocking tool stopped after verifying (green hock) at "Unlocking" with a red cross and show then "After 72 hours of trying to unlock this device".
I do not see where I went wrong...
IMHO this is a f***ed up process of unlocking the bootloader and Xiaomi should work on this.

Hi,
As far as I know unfortunately if you want to install a custom rom you need to replace the Xiaomi recovery with a custom one, like twrp. In order to do that you need to unlock the bootloader first. Then you can flash the custom recovery with the command "fastboot flash recovery twrp-x.x.x-x-mido.img" for the Redmi Note 4 SD for example.

how? Any link to steps? I have currently resurrection remix 5.7.4 with OFFICIALLY unlocked bootloader, but it's useless because all new ROMs require new firmware and I don't have anymore access to my Xiaomi account which had granted bootloader permission, would like to move from marshmallow to Oreo, but that would require flashing me MIUI, relock bootloader and I will get stuck there and don't wanna apply anymore for official unlock, it's PITA

Yeah, this one. Tbh, this needs to be pinned, it's often buried under other posts so people don't know how to do it.

Can anyone list the steps needed to get AOSP/Lineage OS on a clean device?

As there are different steps and threads all over xda as to how to go about rooting redmi note 3 and then installing a custom ROM, I was wondering if someone could list or direct me to the correct working method to unlock bootloader, root, and install a custom ROM.
Note: I haven't done any tampering with the device, no TWRP, no unlocking bootloader via the hack or official method. I have only installed OTA updates sent to the device via Xiaomi.

Are you suggesting that because the unofficial method is unreliable or because you think I am a beginner?
Both.. official method is simple and with unofficial u may get into firmware probs later while flashing roms which leads to soft/hard brick
Official unlock is recommended to avoid something bad for your device

Forget it if you don't have windows. Xiaomi's unlock tool does not support linux. So you can't go with official method.
And the unofficial method requires a modded fastboot ehich is only available for windows. You can't go with this way too.
So, no way out if you don't have windows.
Also don't think of unlocking it unofficially if you don't have windows because most of the unofficial unlocked devices get locked which again requires the modded fastboot to unlock it.
The last problem, seriously and sadly, doesn't have any other solution
I am unofficially unlocked and few days back i had clean installed ubuntu on my pc but now i am back on windows. Why?? Because my device got locked and i couldn't help but install windows. You have been warned!

Yes it can. Actually it hapoens mostly when we flash firmwares which have the unmodified emmc_appsboot.mbn file.
When we unlock unofficially this file is modified.
Thus flashing the firmware locks it.
I would not call it softbrick. When that happens you cannot boot anymore. Only fastboot mode is available and it doesn't allow us to flah any files since the device got locked again.
So we again need to go to edl mode which is only accessible by the modified fastboot available only for windows.
Enjoy linux?

I cannot unlock my Redmi Note 3 Pro Bootloader

I cannot unlock my bootloader for some reason now. I had applied for permission around a year and a half back, I got the permissions, unlocked the bootloader and flashed a lot of ROMS. When I flashed MIUI through fastboot, the bootloader got locked again. Now I want to try some ROMS, but I cannot unlock the bootloader. It goes all the way till 99 percentage and it then gives the message 'Current Account cannot unlock this device'. I have permissions and everything because when I go to the mi unlock site I'm directed to the download page, not to the application page. Also, when I try to bind the account to my phone in Mi Unlock status in developer options, it keeps saying 'Couldnt Verify, wait a minute or two and try again'. I've waited for a day and it still doesn't work. I only have one sim card in my phone(the one which I used to get permission) but still it keeps saying the same message again and again.
Please help!
Regards.
Hello. Though I never had the problem (was on NOS rom before I messed something and had to flash miui rom via fastboot and relocked bl, I easily reunlock again using official method like the first time).
Before unlocking, make sure your phone are locked by using cmd "fastboot oem device info" or something like that I forgot. And your phone developer option have allow oem unlocking ticked on. Make sure your phone mi account logged in and of course matched with the one on your pc/laptop. Have good usb cable, drivers, and stable internet. Also you can try unlocking using another version of miui rom (the one you used for the first unlocking).
Don't know if those helps though.
I had the same problem for almost 2 months, asked on the miui forum and nobody helped so i just unlocked it unofficially, works great! On RR N now!
Same
I have the same problem, and also I know a lot of people with it. It seems that xiaomi has banned the unlock tool I don't know why...

Yeah its not an issue with all devices, I do have colleagues who have managed to unlock it officially, but still its a problem for a lot of people.
I have the exact same problem. Stuck at 99 when trying to re unlock, on both miui 8 and 9. I didnt bother trying to unlock with developer roms, just used the method to flash twrp without bl unlock. All good now on nos 8.
I'm happy with flash twrp only without unlocking bootloader since I got root access anyway
Why are you people trying to unlock bootloader when it's not even necessary on our phone? Just look on the forums a little bit more and you won't struggle anymore trying to unlock.

Regards.

Hi , just manage to add account and device without errors on mi note 3 by using SoloVpn app from playstore set to China .
Now i am waiting 72 hour's to proceed unlocking.
Apparently the error on add account and device starting with 80xxx and some Chinese text it's blocking the unlocking tool.

Why are you people trying to unlock bootloader when it's not even necessary on our phone? Just look on the forums a little bit more and you won't struggle anymore trying to unlock.
