HUAWEI AR Engine: The Whys, Hows and What’s Next - Huawei Developers

Motion tracking, environment tracking, body tracking and face tracking – while they might be basic Augmented Reality (AR) capabilities, these are the technologies that allow your app to bridge virtual world with the real world. At the core of it, what drives this brand new visually interactive user experience is the AR Engine.
Huawei has launched the HMS Core 5.0 in June last year to bring comprehensive Huawei's leading core service capabilities to developers, in return helping them elevate the user experience. One new feature is the AR Engine that offers a wide range of AR-related capabilities, giving developers the means to easily create an all-new interactive and immersive AR experiences.
The project to build the HUAWEI AR Engine began, simply enough, by considering what the next generation of consumer electronics and computing platforms might look like. It’s commonly accepted that the biggest developments in the electronics industry only occur maybe once every 10 to 15 years. Mobile phones have been around since the mid-1990s – over two decades now. Even smartphones have now been on the market for 13 years if you count from 2007 when we saw the first real breakthrough.
So, isn’t it about time we consider exactly what the next generation of technology will look like? What will be the most important new operating systems and software technology for new consumer electronics? And what will the user interaction be like with this new generation of products? It’s high time the electronics industry reflected on its changing business models, as well as changes in the habits of its users.
To answer some of these questions, Huawei tasked numerous research teams with conducting a range of comprehensive studies on the industry. After long periods of research and discussion, these teams identified AR as one of the most important new directions the electronics industry will take. After months of discussion and planning that involved even top management, Huawei engineers are now on a mission to commercialise an AR Engine.
The development team debated at great length on the potential scope of applications this new technology might have. This began with a discussion on the traditional uses of AR to date; functions like Simultaneous Location and Mapping (SLAM), light estimation, image recognition and tracking being the most notable examples. We then launched a systematic development of new algorithms, optimising performance at the system- and chip-level to improve key factors like accuracy, reliability, performance and power consumption. Finally, with the launch of the HUAWEI P20 at the 2018 Huawei Developer Conference (HDC), we were ready to release the first ever commercially available version of our new AR Engine on the HiSilicon Kirin 970.
Following that, at the launch of the HUAWEI Mate 20, we provided an in-depth showcasing of our AR 3D modelling software. Soon afterwards, new features such as the AR Lens and 3D Qmojis were successfully adopted into main product lines by both Huawei and Honor.
However, initial research returned with mixed feedback and confusion about some of these features. Established industry experts claimed that AR was yet to establish itself as a truly stand-out feature of any smartphone. Indeed, many applications of the technology were slow to take off. As an example, due to limited smartphone rendering capabilities, AR 3D modelling has struggled to guarantee the high levels of accuracy and precision that are needed to support a mobile display online in real-time. The perception of AR technology remained that it was just a “toy”, something confined to the periphery of the electronics industry, at least for the time being.
We spent a lot of time thinking about these challenges. That’s when we decided to orient Huawei’s AR 2.0 towards three digital technology areas: people, objects and the environment. Step by step, we then laid out four priority business areas, corresponding to the technology’s core capabilities, applications, ecosystem and Cloud solutions. Finally, the AR Engine 2.0 was successfully launched in 2019. This second generation helped to redefine the AR Engine as an intelligent geometric AI platform, but more clearly distinct from generic AI platforms both in terms of its construction and purpose.
The AR metrics we have created have quickly become some of our users’ favourite gadget hacks, including an AR-assisted ToF camera. In a short space of time, this tool, in particular has proven extremely popular, racking up tens of millions of users every month. The AR Lens app, combining the Huawei camera and AR Engine technology, really is great fun to use. It’s no wonder, then, that it has already accumulated over 10 million MAU (monthly active users). We’ll continue polishing these two applications to provide Huawei customers with the great user experience they expect.
In the first half of 2020, the AR Engine, having completed a number of important optimizations and quality-control checks, went live around the world with Huawei’s accelerated development of the HMS Ecosystem. Updates to the AR Engine are now at the forefront of HMS Core 5.0, which is expanding by over 20% per month, indicating an adjusted growth rate of over 100%. The Huawei AR Engine is supported on most phones and tablets using Huawei's Hisilicon Kirin 970/980/990 and Series 8/Series 7 chipsets.
Over the past three years, we have worked extensively, closely and openly with leading partners in a broad range of industries, including e-commerce, gaming, education, maps and ecosystem toolchain developers to create an improved AR ecosystem in China. We’ve also released Reality Studio to support the rapid development of new AR applications.

Major Challenges in Constructing the HMS Ecosystem

Google's GMS Ecosystem Is Dominant, with Strong User Stickiness
Google was founded more than 20 years ago, and gradually ascended to become the top provider of Internet services, with the exception of a few fields, such as social software and short videos. It owns the dominant search engine and map services that have become fixtures in everyday life for billions of users. Even if Huawei's HMS were to introduce competitive third-party services, it would not dislodge Google in the short-term from its dominant perch.
Long-Term Investment Is Required to Attract Vendors Outside of China
The HMS ecosystem has been developing rapidly since its debut, just a few months ago. However, its user base is still small when compared with that of GMS. This should not come as a shock, as GMS has been around for 13 years, during which it has outlasted a litany of strong, deep-pocketed competitors, ranging from Microsoft's ill-fated Windows Phone ecosystem, to BlackBerry's software ecosystem. The rivalry between Huawei HMS and Google GMS will play out over the long haul, and Huawei's greatest assets are its patience and persistence.
Mobile Device Industry Will Be Divided
Despite its substantial differences, HMS does share one thing in common with GMS: Apps that are developed via HMS service APIs are unable to run on mobile devices that do not have the HMS framework installed. The inevitable result of HMS's ascendance, will be the division of the mobile device market into separate spheres. It's reasonable to speculate that there may be three ecosystems for Android-based mobile devices:
 GMS: adopted by all mobile devices sold outside of the Chinese mainland, except for Huawei mobile devices
 HMS: only adopted by Huawei mobile devices
 Non-GMS/-HMS: adopted by all mobile devices sold in the Chinese mainland, except for Huawei mobile devices
It remains unclear if other leading brands, such as Samsung, Xiaomi, OPPO, and VIVO, will opt to have HMS preinstalled on their products. Thus far, only Huawei and Honor have announced their intention to use HMS, and the ecosystem is being designed accordingly.
In August 2019, Xiaomi, OPPO, and VIVO founded the Global Developer Service Alliance (GDSA), aiming to provide a unified portal connecting developers to the vendors' various app stores. On the GDSA registration platform, developers submit their apps, including Android installation-free apps, games, music, movie, books, magazines, and other digital content and services. Currently, GDSA services span nine countries and regions including major markets such as India, Indonesia, Russia, and Malaysia.
It's difficult to forecast the future relationship between HMS and GDSA; they might compete for the same terrain, or alternatively opt to join forces in competing against Google.

2. Super Sight: The convergence of 5G, VR/AR, machine learning, and other emerging technologies will let us see beyond distance, distortion, surface, and history, opening up new vistas for people, business, and culture. GIV predicts that VR/AR will have a user base of 337 million.
3. Zero Search: As data-driven and sensor-equipped appliances and devices begin anticipating our needs, information will find us. Future searches will be button-free, personal social networks will be created effortlessly, and industry will benefit from “zero-fault maintenance”. GIV predicts that 90% of smart device owners will use intelligent personal assistants.
4. Tailored Streets: Intelligent transport systems will connect people, vehicles, and infrastructure, creating zero congestion, rapid emergency response, and other functions that will make life smoother. GIV predicts that 15% of vehicles will have Cellular Vehicle-to-Everything technology.
5. Working with Bots: Already transforming many industries, smart automation will take on more hazardous, repetitive, and high-precision tasks – a boon for safety and productivity. GIV predicts that there will be 103 robots in industry for every 10,000 employees.
6. Augmented Creativity: Cloud AI will cut the cost and barrier of entry to scientific experimentation, innovation, and art, opening up a goldmine of creative potential that’s available to all. GIV predicts that 97% of large companies will have deployed AI.
7. Frictionless Communication: AI and big data analytics will create seamless communication between companies and customers and break down language barriers. Accuracy, understanding, and trust will underpin tomorrow’s communications. GIV predicts that enterprises will fully use of 86% of the data that they produce.
8. Symbiotic Economy: Companies across the planet are adopting digital tech and smart applications on unified access platforms – that means greater collaboration, resource-sharing, stronger global ecosystems, and higher productivity. GIV predicts that cloud technology penetration among enterprises will be 100%.
9. 5G’s rapid rollout: 5G is here and it’s landing far faster than any previous wireless generation – the potential for individuals, businesses, and society is enormous. GIV predicts that 58% of the world’s population will have access to 5G.
10. Global Digital Governance: Advancements in digital tech must be balanced by shared data standards and principles for data use. GIV predicts that the annual volume of global data will reach 180 ZB (1 ZB = 1 trillion GB).

Huawei Announces New Developer Technologies Capable of Smarter All-Scenario Experiences
Huawei Developer Conference 2020 (Together) was held today at Songshan Lake. In the keynote speech, Huawei announced major upcoming updates for HarmonyOS 2.0, EMUI 11, HMS(Huawei Mobile Services), HUAWEI HiLink, and HUAWEI Research. These improvements will empower global developers and ecosystem partners to provide enhanced and innovative user experiences for users. At the event, Huawei also unveiled six new products that will contribute to Huawei’s all-scenario experience – HUAWEI MateBook X, HUAWEI MateBook 14, HUAWEI WATCH GT 2 Pro, HUAWEI FreeBuds Pro, HUAWEI WATCH FIT and HUAWEI FreeLace Pro.
During the three days, Huawei will bring together developers from around the world through various exciting activities, including Lakeside Talks, Tech. Sessions, Tech. Hour, Codelabs and more. The itinerary will provide opportunities for developers to network, collaborate, and explore ways to bring smart all-scenario experiences to every user.

HarmonyOS 2.0: Officially Open Source with Mobile HarmonyOS Beta Available to Developers by Year End
Huawei Announces New Developer Technologies Capable of Smarter All-Scenario Experiences
Huawei announced its all-scenario experience operating system, HarmonyOS, back in 2019. Since then, a robust line-up of devices has been developed for the system, facilitating quick device discovery, instant connection, hardware collaboration, and resource sharing between multiple smart devices. HarmonyOS 2.0 is announced today, bringing a comprehensive upgrade to its existing distributed capabilities, including software bus, data management, and security. Huawei also introduced an adaptive UX framework that allows developers to quickly reach tens of millions of new devices and users.
With the latest update, HarmonyOS will officially be open-source and developers will be able to gain access to emulators, SDK packages, and IDE tools. The open source project, which is donated toOpenAtom Foundation, will be launched in stages with a mobile HarmonyOS beta release planned firstly for Chinese developers at the end of 2020. Richard Yu announced the roadmap for HarmonyOS in his keynote speech. “Starting on 10 September, HarmonyOS is open to 128KB-128MB IoT devices, such as smart TVs, wearables, cars and more. In April 2021, we will open it to 128MB-4GB devices and in October 2021, HarmonyOS will be opened for devices above 4GB,” he said.
Based on the distributed technology in HarmonyOS, the newly released EMUI 11 enables interaction beyond smartphones. The new operating system allows devices interact with HarmonyOS-based IoT devices, bringing a unique all-scenario experience to users, including using the camera of a bigger-screen device for video calling. The process is powered by the touchless connection between smartphones and HarmonyOS-based home devices, enabling screen projection and more.
Huawei Mobile Services (HMS) Ecosystem: Breaking Ground as The World’s Third Largest Mobile App Ecosystem
With the support of more 1.8 million registered developers worldwide, AppGallery and the HMS ecosystem has continued to show progress this year. AppGallery currently has over 96,000 apps integrated with HMS Core and more than 490 million global active users. In addition, it also achieved a record 261 billion app downloads and distributions between January and August 2020.
In a single year, HMS Core 5.0’s open capabilities have increased from 14 Kits to 56 Kits, while the number of APIs has jumped from 885 to 12,981 covering seven major areas, helping developers achieve innovation and simplify the development process.
For instance, the CG Kit in the Graphics field improves graphics, image quality and experience, as well as improving game screen rendering efficiency. Location kit in the App Services category meets the positioning requirements, providing centimetre to millimetre accuracy location tracking depending on the scenario.
Huawei is committed to fully opening its core software and hardware capabilities. It has opened up core software services, such as browsing, search, map, payment, advertising kits, to accelerate innovation in app development. Huawei has also open up hardware capabilities such as its world-class camera capabilities, AR map capabilities, communication and transmission tools, as well as its leading privacy and security protection capabilities. Through these, Huawei seeks to empower developers to create a new generation of well-loved innovative apps across different categories.
Huawei also has extensive support to assist developers explore business opportunities in China and other global markets, by providing relevant consulting service, localization and integration, marketing and campaign services.
Going forward, Huawei continues to expand developer services. Huawei is building three global ecosystem cooperation labs in Russia, Poland, and Germany to serve global developers and provide enablement, testing, and certification services. Five global developer service centres will also be established in Romania, Malaysia, Egypt, Mexico, and Russia, providing local services and platforms to help developers better grow and innovate.
HUAWEI HiLink: Enabling Billions of IoT Devices to Connect, Manage and Exchange
As the standardised language of IoT Devices, HiLink breaks down barriers between IoT devices from different brands and manufacturers, providing a unified platform where devices can connect easily, and interact seamlessly.
This year, upgrades to HUAWEI HiLink will be made in five key areas: connection, interaction, operation, solution provider, and authentication. The goal is to make billions of IoT devices connect easily, more convenient to manage and control, and interact seamlessly to enable an all-scenario hardware ecosystem. At present, there are 50 million active users contributing more than 1 billion all-scenario device interaction requests every day, with a cumulative 400 million downloads of the Smart Life App
Automobile is also a key tenet of the IoT industry. The HiCar platform will continue to empower automobile industry. HiCar is currently collaborating with over 150 car models with more planned so that more car owners will enjoy the new smart travel experience in the near future.

HUAWEI Research: The innovative research platform
HUAWEI Research, which focuses on front-end research, opens two key platform capabilities HUAWEI Research Kit and HUAWEI Research Cloud. These capabilities facilitate efficient innovative research processes, accelerate technological breakthroughs, incubate apps innovations as well as quickly achieve result transformation. As a result, scientific research institutions, innovation institutions, industry organisations, medical institutions and other industry partners are empowered, allowing industries from all sectors to prosper.
In the Active Health Field, Huawei assisted in heart health research by ensuring that health research data collected is accurate and diverse. In the Travel Safety Field, mobile and wearable devices intelligently collaborate with automobiles to bring new safe-driving technologies such as the collision avoidance system and driver fatigue care. Asia Pacific Developers Guild Events

Since August, the HMS Core ecosystem expansion support team, HMS Core Online Community Operation Team, and APAC frontline personnel have jointly carried out a series of APAC developer guild events and planned multiple event themes based on the overall requirements of developers in APAC and the target of increasing integration amounts. The event targets government science and technology associations, industry agencies, and universities in various countries. Huawei communicated with developers and promoted integration through 5.0 capabilities, vertical solutions, innovative AI technologies, and cooperation cases.
Thailand:HMS Core Wrap Up
On September 10, Huawei cooperated with SF to hold an offline developer meeting event. Napat Ratanapintha, BD in Thailand, shared the success story of top CP Linemen. They achieved user experience improvement after HMS Core integration with weekly average downloads increased by 2234%. Then, Thailand DTSE Min continued to share key content of HDC live TV, including seven domains released by HMS Core 5.0 and the latest Kit capabilities,the Harmony OS mobile ecosystem.
This event attracted 112 developers from various fields. CPs who are willing to cooperate will be tracked to achieve integration willingness and provide remote and offline support.
Thailand:Innovate For All
On September 15, Thailand DTSE Polson introduced the HMS ecosystem and the 1+8+N strategy, shared the topic "5G+AI Making the World Connected Smarter" with developers, and demonstrated the HMS ecosystem's all-scenario solutions and AI-related capabilities.
Through one year's ecosystem expansion, the number of monthly active smartphones, registered developers, and HMS Core integration in Thailand have increased significantly. Among them, some service challenges what top CP Lineman and Wongnai faced before the integration and the innovative values brought by the integration, such as precise positioning, quick QR code scanning, and text recognition, attracted full discussion among onsite developers.
Malaysia:ML Special Series - UTAR Integration Training
To help more developers understand the core functions of the ML Kit in HMS Core and its application in various innovative scenarios, ML Special Series event was held with UATR on September 22, attracting more than 220 developers, including college students.
The event highlighted the core advantages of ML Kit, including "supporting multiple devices", "global use", "low integration difficulty", and "unblocked use on the cloud and device sides". It also introduced the application of photo shopping in the e-commerce field. Reverse image search changed the traditional online shopping mode, breaking through language restrictions on shopping. A large number of developers have expressed their willingness to cooperate further.
Malaysia:ML Special Series - MMU Integration Training
To improve the popularity of HMS Core in Asia-Pacific universities and attract more developers to integrate HMS Core. On September 26, ML Special Series event was held with MMU. The participants were all students majoring in program development in Malaysian universities.
Tan Wei Cong from DTSE Malaysia showed the integration process of HMS Core ML Kit, including registration verification, development preparation, HMS Core tool usage, typical Kit integration, and application release. In this event, developers became familiar with the HMS ecosystem and core functions, laying a solid foundation for subsequent integration and enablement.
Hong Kong:Economic Daily Developers Association
On October 8, Huawei and Hong Kong Economic Daily held a webinar entitled "5G Era - New Challenges vs New Opportunities vs New Ecosystem". Hong Kong DTSE Fong Ming Hou introduced the overall situation of HMS Core 5.0 and AG, enhancing the developers confidence in the HMS ecosystem. This activity attracted more than 300 participants online. More than 100 participants completed the questionnaire and provided valuable product comments. More than 60% of them expressed interest in cooperating with the HMS ecosystem.

Huawei Reaffirms Support for Developers for Global Market Expansion during HMS Go Global Ecosystem Alliance Summit

Shenzhen, 23 December 2020 – Huawei earlier this month reaffirmed its commitment and support to help Chinese developers expand into overseas app markets, as well as wider cross-border expansion into the global market, at the HMS Go Global Ecosystem Alliance Summit. During the summit, developers learned about how Huawei’s initiatives and the HMS Go Global Ecosystem Alliance are helping developers overcome the key challenges for overseas market expansion – product localisation, policy consulting, local promotion to drive user acquisition, and monetisation.
The relatively mature and advanced development of China's mobile sector has simultaneously created opportunities for Chinese developers to expand overseas and incentivised global developers to enter the Chinese market. China accounted for 38% of the global consumer spend on mobile apps and saw almost 100 billion apps downloaded in 2019. But while these numbers reflect the tremendous success of Chinese developers and the market, developers from both sides are still pinned down by pain points such as user acquisition and policy requirements regardless of the direction they are expanding towards.
“Huawei firmly believes that expanding beyond borders is the key for many Chinese developers to increase their mobile applications’ user numbers and revenue, and continue the growth trajectory in overseas markets,” said Mr Wang Yanmin, President of Global Partnerships and Eco-Development at Huawei Consumer Business Group. “HMS Go Global Ecosystem Alliance was formed in September this year to realise this vision. We hope to gradually build up the Go Global Service Engine and global HMS ecosystem to enable more Chinese developers to expand their mobile applications across borders, and experience success abroad.”
Huawei provides extensive support for developers looking to expand beyond their home markets
To help developers navigate and successfully launch their apps in overseas market, Huawei and the HMS Go Global Ecosystem Alliance will offer overseas developers all-rounded assistance, from policy consulting, to product localisation, to support with user acquisition and monetisation.
Among the wide array of measures provided by Huawei and the alliance, is the HMS Core Localisation Service Solution which provides a full-cycle localisation service that touches on the entire spectrum of the development process, empowering developers to align their apps with the local culture, lifestyle, taste and habits. Additionally, developers have access to an online compliance toolkit, which aggregates useful resources and information such as case studies and directory of accreditation companies, to help them navigate the myriad of laws and regulations in their targeted markets. Finally, developers can tap on AppGallery’s vast marketing resources to reach out to their audiences easily and effectively in overseas markets.
During the summit, Huawei also shared several case studies to highlight how ecommerce developers leveraged HMS core capabilities to facilitate their global expansion strategies through precision marketing, as well as enhancing the shopping and app experience.
For instance, Banggood, one of the largest cross-border ecommerce apps in South East China, collaborated with AppGallery in a multi-regional marketing campaign to achieve over 60,000 new downloads and 1,000 new users within three weeks. Another ecommerce app, JD.com, integrated HMS core capabilities with the app to offer users a “what you experience is what you can get” Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality shopping experience. This unique feature was a resounding success with customers – it led to nearly 20% increase in order conversion, as well as a 15% jump in average visit time.
HMS Go Global Ecosystem Alliance partners share insights on developers’ overseas expansion
While there are unparalleled opportunities in expanding to overseas app markets, developers need to understand the various regulatory considerations and uniqueness of the user base.
During the summit, HMS Go Global Ecosystem Alliance partners such as SHAREit, Mintegral, and NetDragon Websoft came together for a panel discussion where they shared insights on the various opportunities and challenges that developers faced when they enter foreign markets, particularly in the era of Globalisation 2.0.
The session also touched on the key differences between Globalisation 1.0 and 2.0. The panellists highlighted that while the key to success for businesses during the previous era was centred on developing their unique competitive edge within their respective field, brands will have to go the extra mile in the Globalisation 2.0 world. Brands will have to look outward beyond their respective fields and embrace collaboration to drive greater innovation and business growth. The panel shared that this was the original intention behind the alliance formation – for developers to onboard the HMS ecosystem and collaborate with each other while exploring overseas market expansion opportunities.
The webinar also invited Tom Rafferty, Regional Director, Asia for The Economist Intelligence Unit, to share valuable insights on market conditions, as well as challenges, opportunities, and risks for developers to expand overseas in a post-pandemic world.
During the session, Rafferty shared that Chinese firms are still ahead of the rest of the world in terms of meeting the needs of the digital consumers, and the epidemic is the perfect opportunity for developers to re-examine their strategies and opportunities to prepare for the future, particularly in Southeast Asian markets where opportunities are bountiful.
Huawei has an extensive user base in China as well as a deep understanding of its domestic app marketplace. The company is increasingly looking to leverage this expertise to help international developers gain a better understanding of the Chinese market, and working alongside to help them overcome obstacles, unlock the countless opportunities of launching an app in China.
