Moto G8 power BOOTANIMATION - Moto G Power Questions & Answers

Hi to all, I've got a xt2041-3 stock rom, rooted with magisk and with twrp;
I'd like to change the bootlogo (to cover the warning advice), and the bootanimation (I hate the stock one).
All the info tell me to replace the bootanimation.Zip file, but i cannot find it in root/system/media (i see onli a wallpaper folder).
I've tried also to flash some bootanimation, le dialogue confirm the correct installation, but at the reboot nothing is changed....
OT: @Admin, it miss a moto g8 power folder in the motorola devices thread.

I've found (i think) the correct path: System/product/media where i finally can see the bootanimation.zip to replace, but i cannot change the permissions to operate on the file..

The system partition cannot be mounted as read/write. They there is technically a way, but it requires lptools built for Android, and I don't have a copy of it. I believe lptools is included in Phh's Android 11 GSI.

So the tips of the bootanimation file replacing is not working with the g8 power? Any suggestions? Tnx!

Unless there's a magisk module you're out of luck.

[Q] boot animation wont change

I'm not exactly sure this is in the correct section but here goes... I have downloaded different boot animations, replaced the bootanimation.zip file using file expert, made sure the permissions were the same, but when I restart my phone, i keep getting the same old factory one. Is there an extra step that I'm missing?
I forgot to mention, that I am rooted. I thought it was the file explorer program, to I downloaded root explorer, and when I tried to change the name of the original bootanimation.zip, it says that it cant because the file system is read only. Could it have something to do with my problem?

mount the system as R/W before you do anything in /system. it's at the top of the screen in root explorer.
Thanks, that did it. But now instead of the one I downloaded, all I get is the word "android"
NVM I got it now thanks again
I noticed that after upgrading to lastest OTA that the bootanimation sound doesn't play, even the stock AT&T one. The sound files are present, but they just don't play.
Any suggestions?

is this for audio during boot? My phone never played audio during the boot process. I thought it was normal.

yes, but it will be played only if mentioned so in the desc.txt inside the bootanimation.zip at /system/media/
it is unnecessarily complicated now by changing the location to the new one while the config file resides in bootanimation.zip which originally remains at the same old place.

Z3 Custom Boot Animation

Has anyone got a custom made or downloaded boot animation for their Z3 working? Because I can't get mines to work at all and then when I placed the original bootanimation.zip back, the original boot animation no longer works either.
I use this one! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.liveboot

That looks pretty cool. But does it work on your Z3, I'm assuming it does because you said you're using it. But I would more like to use my own that I made myself and I just can't get it to work at all. I know how to make boot animations and how to ZIP them up as Store and what the values in the desc.txt mean. I just don't understand why it won't work. And even after putting back the original bootanimation.zip, I no longer have a boot animation at all.
Idk man :|
Have you tried editing an already existing one?

Yeah I actually edited a copy of the original which has the exact same number or images that I replaced in it even saved them all in the exact same image format. But what's weird is that after I realized that the one I made was no good, I placed the original back. But even after doing that I now don't have a boot animation at all.
So no one knows why custom made boot animations won't work with the Z3? I've made my own custom boot animations for both of my previous Android devices, Xperia PLAY and Xperia Z Ultra and I've never had any issues when doing it.

You mean just mount /system in RW? Because that's what I originally did to change it. And it didn't work.
EDIT: Nevermind I figured out what you meant by setting permissions to rw-r--r-- and now my boot animation works, thanks!

Use any file explorer with root functions. Boot animation came from stock i9505 lollipop.
Can I just use Flashfire and just flash the boot animation zip using that and reboot?

Would ES File Explorer be able to do this? If not, which file explorer would you recommend?
I did not see the original bootanimation.zip file under /system/media, so I renamed the four samsung files (bootsamsung11; bootsamsungloop22; bootsamsungmini33 and bootsamsungminiloop44) from .qmg to .bak, then copied the new boot animation zip file I grabbed to /system/media. I still have the Samsung audio but just black screen before it went right to home screen...no new animation. Did I miss a step? I'm not finding posts on doing this with Flashfire (which would seem logical since it would be so easy). If I go this route, I would copy the boot animation.zip to /system/media, then run Flashfire and flash it , correct? Thats it?

The boot animation i uploaded is not flashable with any recovery tools .Just use root browser/explorer. Extract all the qmg files and replace the qmg's in system>media folder.
I did NOT find a bootanimation.zip in /system/media. All the sites and videos that describe doing this refer to it. I found one place on XDA indicating that the GS4 does NOT uhave the bootanimation.zip file and instead uses only the qmg files...that was what was throwing me off.. I found the Android Lollipop bootup (that uses qmg files), replaced the existing qmg files.... and it worked.
Then I explored how to change the audio as it was silent. I made a custom .ogg file using the THX movie theatre intro (you'll recognize it instantly when you hear it) which seemed like the perfect techie bootup sound. Found a site to cut its length (its a bit too long to match the boot up animation) and Presto!! I have this amazingly cool bootup animation with the perfect audio to match! The audio file won't upload here but you can get it here: http://www.thx.com/thx-deep-note/
Use an mp3 grabber such as http://www.listentoyoutube.com/, then cut it down (I cut off the first 10-12 seconds) using http://mp3cut.net/. Convert it to an ogg (http://www.zamzar.com) and replace the existing PowerOn.ogg in /system/media/audio/ui with the new file (renamed to match). Rename and keep the old one as a .bak file in case you ever want that Samsung sound again.

Es file explorer will/can if that directory exists. Enable root mode to access system files. Be careful not to change anything unless you are very sure you know what is is.

I swear I'm not just trying to be ignorant or beat you up here by saying this, but I just thought it was kind of funny because you basically just asked a question and then answered yourself all in one sentence. Anyway to answer your question (again lol) though, yes you do need to have root in order to do this because without it the directory where the files need to be pasted will be "read only", and you will not the have the access needed in order to change it. Hope it helps [emoji106].

Any way to change boot animation

I found the file where boot animation is stored on the pixel 4a. It's not under system/media it's in product/media. None of the boot animation apps work. And the magisk module for changing animation doesn't seem to work on my device. When I try to physically put a new bootanimation.zip in /product/media it won't let me says my root directory is 100% full. I always like using a custom animation. Does anyone have any ideas how to get this done?

I have looked into this quickly. I created a magisk module to replace my boot animation but it failed. The internal format of the actual ZIP file is different to previous versions of android.
As for directly changing the file, I have only got this phone recently, but from my understanding, newer devices can not nount their system partitions as RW, so Magisk will be the only way.
When I get a chance, I will be converting my old boot animation to mimic the new format, and give that a go. If that works, I will be including/updating my app TeMeFI to be capable for my/our device.

The magisk module failed for me as well. If you do end up figuring it out would greatly appreciate your insight.
yeah im extremely interested in a solution to this.
it used to be so so so much easier to change the boot animation and boot logo etc. these newer phones are crazy locked down.
I looked into this also a few weeks ago now. I havent tried the latest magisk, and I know previously on an older magisk in oreo, it would play half the original animation then switch to the new one. Super weird. So, maybe if its brought to @topjohns attention (in giothub I think), it could get a fix.
On my previous Oreo phone, I had created a working boot animation change, so I thought it would be a simple task to do the same for A11. Not so... It didn't work. And yes, I noticed the changed location, and also converted the zip file to the new format
So, the weird thing, which kind of confirmed I was probably doing it correctly is that I had a crash which caused a soft-reboot, and on that reboot, the replaced boot animation worked! But, onnay cold boot, it failed and played the normalone. Also, if I went into /product/media on a live system and tried opening (either zip), they would be my replacement boot animation.

Magisk loads after userdata is mounted so you get the stock anim until then. I have modified system directly but the anim still "plays" twice. Not this phone, not android 11.

Well you did mention half old, half new?
Before I had this phone, I had a Mi A2 Lite and it played the boot animation twice. Once before userdata was mounted (but not to the end), then again once userdata was mounted. Magisk modules could affect the second one but not the first (since Magisk files live on the userdata partition). I only really ran Android 9 and 10 on that phone, and they both did it.
I suppose the system could have just left the static splash on the screen until userdata was mounted, but for whatever reason, that's now what my old phone did.
I haven't actually watched the Pixel booting closely enough to spot if it's doing the same thing or not
Back to the issue at hand...
I have a read-only device /dev/block/dm-2 mounted at /product but I also see something Magisk-related mounting a directory called product but the path is ... whack.
/dev/B9z84Wq/.magisk/block/product on /dev/B9z84Wq/.magisk/mirror/product type ext4 (ro,seclabel,relatime)
dm-0 is /
dm-1 is /vendor
dm-2 is /product
dm-3 is /system_ext
All of these are (apparently) ext4. Probably these are all "files" on the super partition (ie. the new dynamic partitioning). That Magisk thing makes me think a module should be able to replace files in there... but maybe the bootanimation.zip is loaded before Magisk gets a chance to do that?

But if you read that post, I also explicitly say it was an old magisk. A newer version of Magisk changed that, and it played the new one from start to finish.

I'm on derpfest a11. The first time I boot after flashing I get the derpfest boot animation (a colorful flashing owl) any time after that first boot it shows the Google logo then just the words android screen goes black then the word android again. I know this isn't a derp thread I just thought it was weird that the custom boot logo shows on first boot but not after that. When I check /product/media it's the derp-bootanimation so not even sure where the android logo is being loaded from.
Looking at the zips of the files in product/media, the files are different from normal boot-animation zips. The desc file is different, and there trim.txt files in the part folders. I haven't played with it yet, but would be nice to change change the G one.

I have managed to change the boot logo of the stock A11 firmware, I dont have time to get into it too far right now (im on my way ... socially distanced ... out)
1. I modified the bootanimation.zip to match the new format (dont know if the old format works)
2. manually created a magisc module to replace the one in the ROM
3. Added a boot script to do a soft reboot on each start-up/boot. It appears Magisc does not replace the file soon enough, so the old one plays. even though it appears changed in the running OS, obviously after the ORIGINAL had played.; which I coud not find in the ROM But there is 1 second of "Google" before my animation plays.
I also added a step to blur any area below the quick tiles, and also a few other places, such as in the reboot screen

The following is the format docs. But in itself, the location isn't correct. I personally reversed engineered the existing one using my pre-loved boot animation, and then found this doco.
bootanimation format
It also implies sound is supported.
I added my one as an example that works. its the Nexus prime boot animation. But mine plays faster and for a shorter time.
I used to make boot animation for my device, it worked fine on A10(custom rom) but on certain builds it had the same problem as yours like not enough storage or similar error I don't recall but just found out this post and tried the old files I made and working fine on A11(custom rom)
It's a bit large for a boot animation but it's so because of the gradient colours and full resolution compression of the original video file makes the quality worse. Still give it a try if the format works.
Use mixplorer with root and first copy and backup the existing files and then give this file a try. rename the file after pasting in the correct directory. refresh if it shows no files renamed

the answer is in the post below. I had mine working, now I dont bother, so I would have to scan through my history (part of the reason since I have more pressing items to expend time on), and even then, it wouldn't be a drop in magisk module, but a manually built one..

Whats up guys, I am actually bringing questions that relate to this topic and not answers for now. Does Android Studio have a tool to access & modify the boot animation directories? Or even a tool from Android Studio that helps when taking on this task?
