I bought the last Samsung Galaxy Note.
After news broke out about Samsung not releasing an update for the Note series this year and enabling pen support on Samsung S21 Ultra, I decided it was time for me to upgrade my old Note 8 to the Samsung Galaxy Note 20.
I much prefer the smaller size compared to the Note 20 Ultra with the flat screen and plastic back. Together, with the ESR metal kickstand case, this will be my workhorse for a few more years.

Took the Samsung Note 20 5G out to the lakeside with the Realme 7 5G for a quick camera comparison to test out how big the differences is between a budget midrange phone to a premium phone that is almost 3 times it's retail price.
Disappointed with the Note 20 selfie camera video in daylight and low light test. Rather soft, lacking details and stabilization is horrible.
Also, battery on the Exynos 5G model is totally bad!
Go to bed with 100% woke up with 80%... I had to force deep sleep to many app only managed to achieve 90% next morning.
Anyone facing this issue do drop some suggestions below on how to reduce the battery usage during standby. It's even worst than my old Note 8!

Photo quality

Say "cheese", then rate this thread to express how photos taken with the Xiaomi Mi A2 come out. A higher rating indicates that photos offer rich color (without over-saturating), sharp detail (with all subjects in-focus), and appropriate exposure (with even lighting).

The camera (software) of the Mi A2 is once again a disappointment, Xiaomi still isn't even close to the competition.
Here's a medium/low light composition (100% crop) taken with my old Redmi Note 3 Pro (Samsung Sensor) and the Mi A2.
I've taken more samples with the A2, hoping for better sharpness and contrast and selected the best ones - but only that single image on the Redmi Note 3 Pro.
The Redmi Note 3 (as well as the Note 4X and Mi A1 with Google HDR+ Camera) easily outperform the Mi A2 in a few hundred shots I've taken so far in all situations, except for:
- Daylight action shots (still close but in most situations the shorter aperture helps)
- Extremely low light (the Redmi Note 3 still has the edge on sharpness and focus accuracy, but the A2 wins with a bit less noise and better contrast / dynamic range)

That sounds like my experience as well. I'm currently comparing this phone (for my dad) against my Nexus 5X, and straight out of the box images even with HDR just can't be compared.
However, I specifically bought this device for the price point + androidOne combo. With the google camera port and camera2api enabled, this is just about on-par with the Nexus 5X. I'd almost consider getting this for myself!
I noticed in your Redmi sample, you had used a google cam port. Try a google cam port on the A2, it's quite the improvement. I'll have opportunity to post some samples in the next few days, since I just got the A2 yesterday

Particular characteristics noticed:
- autofocus isn't always on-point if you just shoot from the hip (aka double-tap power, then immediately single tap volume button); for best results you should wait like a second to lock focus
- some google camera ports allow you to tweak highlight and shadow saturation; explore around!
- colours aren't 100% accurate, but could just be a simple white-balance adjustment in snapseed, etc.

Maby you are on "low quality" mode.
Go to the camera settings and select the "high quality" option.
Both cameras have its own settings, so if you want to change the resolution of the frontal camera, you are gonna have to swipe to that camera and then acces to the settings.

No, it was on high quality. Changing it to 4:3 fixed it and made the photos produced to 12mp instead of 8mp.

Why is the potrait mode resolution on my mi a2 is 16mp and 20mp....i thought the camera resolution is 12mp on the primary camera
Why there is so much difference between mia1 portrait and mia2 portrait ? i like mi a1 blur co'z they look close to natural like dslr blur and a2 blur seems to artificial why?

Honest review: I agree with @Benjamin_L
My previous phone was Redmi 3S. With Google Camera it produced more sharper images than Mi A2 with Google Camera. It looks like there's some kind of pixel binning thing happening even with the primary sensor. Edges are not crisp/sharp. Dynamic range is good though with GCam ports in every phone it no longer matters.
Only place where it wins from other phones is its low light performance due to the aperture. Otherwise the camera is not really that great, as speculated in every blog. Sure, in stock camera comparisons with other phones, Mi A2 is the better one. However once we move to GCam, other phones are at par with Mi A2, in fact better, in Daylight.

Honor 20 Pro vs Galaxy S10 Snapdragon 855

Hello!
I'm trying to choose between the 2 phones right now. H20P is cheaper, but does not have an OLED screen and I'm not sure about the camera (especially the video quality and the fact that it doesn't support GCam). I currently have a Galaxy A50 and I like everything but the camera.
Are there any comparisons of the actual user experience between the 2 phones? Thanks in advance.
The S10/20p have almost same CPU speed. but S10 have better GPU. however if you are not gamer it's mean nothing.
Honor 20 Pro Camera is much much poor then S10.
(I have HTC U11, S9+, 20P,, In many case 20p photo quality is just poor then U11, it shock me!)
About fingerprint sensor, I like 20p's side sensor more then S10's on-screen sensor.
At least, 20p can't unlook boot loader and can't change default launcher.
If $$$ is not a problem S10 is better,, if think about C/P ratio 20p still a good phone.

For me is Honor20Pro better option, LCD without flickering, no extra rounded edges, 4Ah battery and, IMHO, better camera (f/1.4, 1/2").. and cost is, at least, 100euro lower :]. I"m able to get over QI/reverse charging, audio jack and a little bit wider UW camera.

Poco F1 Front Camera Fix New Finding

Hello devlopers and friends Ever since I brought poco f1 and installed gcam and other third party camera apps my front camera resolution drops to 5mp. Only official camera app is able to use 20 mp resolution.
I know there are many threads about pixel Bining and stuff but i don't agree with them. The main problem is at the end a 5Mp Image is 5Mp and 20 Mp is 20 mp.
But i think and request devlopers to please look to it.
## According to my theory As confirmed by Device info Harware app There are three camera sensors in poco F1 out of which the one with camera ID 0 is 13 the one with camera ID 1 is 20 and with camera ID 2 is is 5 megapixel.

This process is the procedure of combining a cluster of pixels into a single pixel. As such, in 2x2 binning, an array of 4 pixels becomes a single larger pixel, reducing the overall number of pixels.

Lets agree gcam uses pixel Bining and stuff.
But why other apps detect and capture 5mp are they all using pixel Bining.
And why only Mi Camera can capture at full potential of the sensor. Is there a catch we all are ignoring.
Pixel Bining or not at the end when zoomed 5Mp image is storing lesser data .
And also imagine a 20mp full resolution shot with gcam cam make things go from OK to wow.

It doesn't really change anything. And it doesn't mean more resolution = more quality. It is a matter of fact of image processing. If you really compare MIUI Stock Camera and Google Camera, you will see the big difference from the two since that Stock Camera doesn't uses Pixel Binning algorithm

Pixel binning gives better shots in low lighting conditions only. No significant difference in well lit conditions. Thats why i want to capture with full resolution in Google camera because its awesome.
Also if pixel binning is so justified why don't we capture 3 mp photo with rear camera and say its better than 13mp because its not

Then use the stock camera if you really wanted the 20mp. Use gcam if you wanted better image processing.
This was explained a long time ago and it is really not a big issue or some conspiracy about the 20mp sensor
Yes it is a issue One plus devices had this issue Zen devices had issues similar in Auxiliary camera regarding resolutions on gcam. All those were fixed due to efforts of devlopers.But i think people just want to accept everything and not work it out. If some one can try to find a fix there will be a fix. But if everyone just accept the fate lie down nothing is gonna happen

Dude, you are suggesting your gcam is taking front selfies with rear 5MP sensor?
A 20MP image is only twice as big 5MP image. Not 4 times big.
Gcam 5MP selfie carries much more details than 20MP MiUi camera, day or night. Period. MiUi camera does a lot smoothening.

Or maybe gcam does lot's of sharpening to make them look "detailed" zoomed out? When zoomed in you can see tiny coloured squares.
Update I used Redmi note8 Pro and Redmi k20 pro with gcam They all produce 5 mp front and 12mp back irrespective of the sensor resolution. Maybe gcam only supports these resolution maximum.
Honestly i would love larger resolution support with gcam .
In k20pro gcam can take images in 48 MP resolution
In back But issue is in front it only takes with 5mp resolution and this 5MP resolution is useless when you zoom the image or see it laptop you can see amount of noise.This really need a fix .

Actually Gcam detects full one Megapixel when individual pixel size is more that 1.1 π size..
Poco f1 or other Xiaomi phone with 20mp sensor has individual pixel size of 0.8/0.9/1.0 π size.
But Gcam detect full 13mp in my Redmi note 5 AI because the sensor's pixel size is 1.12 π.
Thus even in my old device has a 13mp insane Gcam selfie.

Fix for Focus issue on LG G8X

Hello there, this is dedicated to all my photographers and videographers of LG G8x.
First things first, no matter what how many times you complaint them the problem is not fixable through software updates because front camera have fixed focus.
So i think there is no other option than this.
Case 1: (Professional phone photographers)
Guys if you are carrying a 35mm or 50mm then mount it to the front camera and zooming 1.5x is the solution for shooting 4:3 aspect ratios and only 1.2x zoom for 9:16 or higher aspect ratios.
+ Get lot of blur or shallow depth of field.
+ Can use Canon or Nikon lenses to achieve high end quality. Plus features if your lens have OIS, UV protection etc.
- Weight is a problem.
- Zooming 1.5x makes photo to loose its quality a little bit (especially in nights).
Case 2: (Cheap solution)
This is an inexpensive solution, get yourself a wide angle lens for under 200 rupees for indians and under 2 US dollars.
Buy that 3 in one lens and use the wide angle and zoom 1.2x for 4:3 aspect ratio and 1.1x for 9:16 or higher aspect ratios.
+ Very Cheap
+ Light Weight
+ Less zoom means lesser quality reduction
- No quality lenses are used, little bit lesser color reproduction.
Buy anywhere online by typing 3 in 1 lenses for phone.
Hope this would help you out, if helps don't say thanks but help me find a solution to record 1080p 240 fps video with zooming (stock camera doesn't allow zooming in that setting)
Filmic pro is not working for slow motion .
Moment pro camera doesn't work for slow motion.

Why you need to zoom ? Just take video at 240fps then crop, you will archive same quality because there is no optical zoom in our device, it only uses digital zoom even in photo mode (i gave you solution) ,give a thumb up

Thank you for the suggestion but while cropping as you told, the cornors of the video will have too much distortion which can be resolved by digital zooming a little bit.
And the answer to your question is, This LG G8x beats all the midrange smartphones and i have seen results better than iphone 11 (believe me).
It also beats Oneplus´s all flagships with its Camera capabilities.
Its DXOmark Score is 99, the highest score for a smartphone is 130.

Easily beats Oneplus 7 pro in both photo and video modes.
Comparatively Oneplus always makes it pictures over saturated which is ugly i feel. But LG G8x prefers natural tone for skin, good HDR and coming to indoor photography G8x is a killer. Very least noise with the 12Mp sensor and never use that Ultra Wide angle 13Mp in low light or indoor (Too much Noise)

General Is Sony Xperia Pro-I a real "game-changer"?

Hello, my fellow members:
Like many of you out there, I am in grief
Only a few months ago I purchased the Sony Xperia 1 Mark III and started enjoying it. But that joy did not last long... Sony announced Sony Xperia Pro-I... Now my $1300 top-of-the-line phone is no longer top-of-the-line and it now costs barely $997. Like many of you out there, I am asking myself: should I have waited? Well, if Sony Xperia Pro-i is indeed a game-changer then, yes, I shouldn't rush in buying the Mark III and wait for the next model, but is it? Whell, that's why I am starting this thread to hear your opinions!
I did not put my hands on the Pro-I yet but from its specs listed on gsmarena (see below) they are basically identical with the only difference being the lens and the chip - that is being advertised as a "1" chip".
I am a sony fan, no doubt, as 95% of all electronics I owned or owe are Sony. But when it comes to cameras, I noticed that Sony is very cheap in giving us better chips...They changed their cameras, they upgraded them but inside you would find the same, old, Sony chip. And now I am surprised to see that Sony is pushing it into the cellphone platforms....hmmm, why? Are they ready to make a move and change the chip on the cameras, therefore, they decided to make a little bit of profit still from their old one? Who knows?
Anyway, going back to the Xperia Pro-i, is it a game-changer? Tough question, right? Well, as I said before I own the Xperia 1 Mark III and one of its biggest drawbacks is the battery. Although Sony claims is a 4500mA battery, it does not behave like one - it keeps me running for the day but that's it - at night, I have to charge it.
So, if the Xperia Pro-I has the same battery (as per gsmarena), then how does that battery will power that big 1" chip??? In my opinion: it can not! If Sony would put that big *ss chip in the middle of the phone to work in conjunction with that super-duper, power-hungry display and all other gps , satellite antenas and that octa-core processor and speakers with subwoofer and vibrations and under an android command with many power-consuming applications, then that phone would not last half a day per charge. Therefore, I think that Sony must have cropped that chip but kept the dot pitch and, hopefully, put a better battery with a real 4500mA juice. Therefore, 1" chip might not be a real 1" chip, but still bigger than the one in Mark III.

Do you call it a fancy toy because of the price? The Pro I sensor does not take better pictures? The pictures from the Pro I appear quite a bit brighter in auto mode, no?

you see, if something looks like a phone, feels like a phone and works like a phone, it's a phone. Even if the marketing team says it's a camera with a phone attached to it.
A camera with a 1" sensor should be a camera that uses the surface of a 1" sensor, dammit, and not 2/3 of it. If Sony boasted 36mp sensor in their Alpha cameras where you could only use 24, a lot of people would be upset, but here it's advertised as a game-changer.
I bought the phone for a review. Now I'm waiting for the release of Android 12 to help my review stay up-to-date for longer. Xiaomi already has updated its flagships to A12, Samsung also has, but Sony hasn't yet rolled out an update to its most pricy flagship, which makes no sense since both Xiaomi and Samsung have hundreds of phones while Sony only has a few.
Anyway, Sony is the most balanced flagship imo, but its camera is only good for videos. It does do a much better job in that department, with its 10-bit rec.2020 video, it's unmatched. But you need straight hands to be able to use this stuff properly.
Either way, if one is a photographer, I recommend getting an APS-C camera in the likes of Fuji X-T## series. For videography, the Pro-i has an edge.

Now I get your comment. Thanks for the full explanation. Your suggestion of an APS cameras like the Fuji is a suggestion with which I agree and have suggested myself. I want to upgrade phones from the Xiaomi Note 10 Pro from 2019 I have now. The Xiaomi Note 10 Pro camera still gets rated above many new phone releases at 131 DXO points. Anyway.... choices for new phones have not justified a purchase to since 2019. From Sony I appreciate the micro card storage, 3.5 jack, the lanyard and the other phone features etc. Close to stock android is a big deal to me. I ran with Pixels for 6 or 7 years. Xperia's are freer from monetization than Sammy or Apple. And I have a history with Sony cameras: the Sony HX 9 travel camera and the Sony Mavica with the floppy drive.
Sony gets top dollar from consumers. But Sony the downsizing of a lot of their divisions and off- loading the TV's etc. I think they are challenged with support. Sony obviously isn't devoting a lot of organizational assets or manpower to their phone division. So the step-child doesn't get the robust support out to consumers with updates.
On top of all that, the Sony dealer where I live in Indonesia doesn't sell the phones (... I won't go into details on that) so I will have to go to Singapore and I have concerns about the service to an overly expensive phone. I really don't know what I would buy that gives me micro-card storage and a 3.5 inch jack for the classical music to which I listen.
I do disagree with you about the big sensor. So what if they only use part of the sensor? There is no way with the tech to take advantage of the whole sensor in today's slab phones. Anyway... mobile phones are a lot of fun to play with.... you are right, maybe all of them are just toys. Have fun amigo.

Advertising the 1" but only letting users utilize 1/1.3" is a end-user deception. Still, 1/1.3" is big, it's nice, but it's far not the same as having a true 1" sensor. Also, relative aperture is pretty bad, f2.0 was already not impressive in 2017 - mi11 Ultra utilizes a bigger sensor and it's got a bigger relative aperture which resolves the sensor faster.
They should stop deceiving people and say the truth and explain it wisely - say, "We installed the same sensor as in the rx100m7, and cropped it so you could have 4k120 which the rx100m7 is not capable of! Also, the cropped area is the area that is almost entirely covered with phase detection AF points, so you'll only benefit from it in terms of AF speed!" But they don't. And lots of people feel they've been lied to - especially those who own the both devices and find out that Pro-i is limited to 12mp and it's not the same as the 20mp they got out of their RX100.
In the end, if one is into photography that much, they might consider a Xiaomi mi11 Ultra. In my opinion the Xiaomi gives the most camera hardware for money, and out of all the phones you see on the attached photo (i took it, it's not a stock photo), I am most impressed with the potential of mi11 Ultra. That's where you have the biggest relative aperture and a properly utilized huge sensor. At the same time, colors are not the best, Vivo x70pro+ gives colors that are more eye-pleasing if one prefers portraits. But one must not rush into buying Xiaomi if they ever take photos of moving objects due to catastrophic shutter lag. Only Xperias and iPhones, and AFAIK Google Pixels have minimal shutter lag, most other phones left me unsure whether I will always be able to capture rapidly vanishing moments. Xiaomi has the best detail and Vivo has the best color, but it won't matter if the smile is gone or the bike has left the viewfinder.
Pro-i has a very fast camera. Sadly you can't have both speed and high megapixel count on a phone.

I'll wait now and see part of the round of 2022 devices. The Xiaomi I have has a nice camera. You are right, the shutter is slow. I really should stick to a phone like the Xiaomi's that you can get here in Indonesia. The Vivo is nice, but I find the colors oversaturated but the people I know with shoot in auto mode all the time.The Oppo Find X and a few other phones are interesting. The new Xiaomi ultra should be interesting. Still I don't like the operating systems on the Xiaomi. It is getting better, but I prefer a fairly pure android if I can get it.

That aside, the real question is: is the Pro I a game changer? Yea and no: There are faster and larger sensors on phones. There are more powerful AI computational phones out there. However, if you don't want your grey rainy skies tinted blue, or yellowing grass made artificially green, then Xperia is the way to go. The Pro I is slightly thicker and noticeably heavier than the Xperia 1 III, which I like, but most will not. Also there is very limited zoom on the Pro I, and I find this a little limiting.
However, the main sensor is better. Better in colour, low light and detail. On phone screen you will not notice it. But on a 4k monitor or 10"x8" is is better. Not a huge difference, but it's there if you care.
This is the game changer: More interestingly is the RAW performance: if this guy is right, then most computational cameras ruin the raw output even if they have amazing jpg output. Here is the Vivo X70 Pro Plus against Xperia Pro I in raw

You are right. I notice the difference in photos. You are correct, the sensor is better. I don't like the marketing stretch and over-exuberance. But, don't all the phone companies say they are the best? The size and thickness? Those commentators should get over themselves. Pro-i does computational photography. It is a digital product after all. The Sony look appears to be more natural to me and so I prefer it. Remember the days when photographers debated Kodachrome, Ektachrome, FujiFilm, etc. Each had it's own look. I want to remember the image I see with my eyes the way it was, not some computational blue blazing sky on a dreary day. And yes, there is a real difference in Sony vs. Sammy or Apple. SomeGadgetGuy (knows his stuff) and has said so once or more. Sony is offering a very comprehensive package (head phone jack, etc., etc.). One of these days Sony will hit it out of the park with a decent battery and a little bit of cooling for the damn chip sets. Let's hope Sony keeps up it's distinctive set of phones. The phones are quite apart from the fanboy and fangirl mass products. BTW, I do think Oppo, Xioami and Hauwei( and their sub-brands) are putting out some worthy packages. This should be a fun year for phones.

Sure, all digital cameras are computational, but you appear to know what I am describing. The over emphasis of sharpening and saturation. The phone companies have gone overboard for me, and it appears you. Kodachrome or Fujifilm would be a nice optional filter, as opposed to Samsung defaults. Personally I find the Xperia a bit flat, and seems to be compared to the dedicated Sony cameras like RX100. But as a data, it gives you a great raw starting point with lightroom. If the YouTube link I gave is true, the other don't stand a chance if that. Lightroom's auto mode is better than iPhone ect.
Yes Vivo, Huawei and by association Honor are doing great things (Vivo you need to switch to Zeiss Natural Color first or it over saturates).
We are in agreement. I see in adverts that Sammy now claims the S22 Ultra has natural colors and a better raw. If the marketing claim is true for more natural and better RAW, then Sony moved the bar. Wouldn't it be great if Hasseblad has a real influence on the Oppo, or Zeiss hits the mark with their Sharp branded phone? It's a fun year for mobile phones. Best.

I do need to play more with the video pro and cinema and see if I can unlock the potential. I also just started experimenting with the night time shots. A few shots are in basic.
