Question Newb here. Official vs Unofficial - Moto G Power (2021)

I have a 2020 Moto G Power that I was able to load unofficial LineageOS 17.1 on . Does being "Unofficial" bring with it any caveats? SHould I not trust using it as my everyday smartphone for email, other personal apps?

Using a custom rom especially an unofficial version, may add to the possibility of your data being compromised.
99% of the devs on XDA are not trying to steal you data.
You just need to make your own judgement on whether it's worth the risks.
No mobile software is 100% secure, not even iOS.

Upgrading my Phone

I know this is going to be a somewhat complicated process, but I'm willing to stick with it.
I'm willing to upgrade to any ROM, really, I'm not picky. If nobody suggests anything different, I'll just go with Cyanogenmod. What I really want is Android M running on the device as soon as possible. Which ROM gets that update out the quickest? I'm a complete beginner at everything you can think of, but I can read and I have a computer, so I can follow tutorials just fine.
Any ideas which ROM I should upgrade to when the time comes? (I mean, if any developers have announced the update to M and their support for the Mate2). If not, my main question is when will Cyanogenmod developers start building on Android M? And when do you think it will get over to the Mate2?
EDIT: I know it hasn't come out yet, but sometimes developers announce that their ROM will be based on some new version of android before it even comes out.
Both PAC and CM are nice. I run CM because I prefer the stick android experience . PAC has more bells and whistles. Personal preference really. SuperBass has made videos on both of them. As well as installing each one.
M will probably never make it to the HAM2. CM works great and is easy to install. Just jump in there with both feet.

Well, to get there, I'd have to downgrade to Jellybean, upgrade to Lollipop, and then start the CM install, which I'm likely to **** up. It's gonna be more like a couple of slow hops in different directions.

Yeah, I was wondering about M. So the official Huawei devs won't update to Android M, but won't CM be updated to be based on it? Is that how it works, or am I mistaken?
I am under the impression that CM has official developers who actually work on the ROM. Then other developers use that and make it available for different devices. Therefore, Android M will be coming to the Mate2 as long as CM is updated by the official developers and it gets support for the device, right?

No, that's not how it works, actually. Huawei would have to release the HAM2 specific M code for other ROMs to use it. I am about 99.9 percent sure that Huawei will not build M for the HAM2 so it dies on the vine, so to speak.

So CM isn't a base that device developers tweak to work with specific devices? Do you mean that CM is developed over what the phone manufacturers release?

Devs need manufacturer kernel source to build off of. Someone can PORT M to this phone. But I seriously doubt that happens. Huawei will surely NOT release M. They barely managed L. And that was only due to so many complaining about no support.

Yes, CM is often used as a base that other devs use to add their stuff on top of. But, if the manufacturer doesn't release their code (which includes drivers and such), then there will be no CM. Yes, CM is developed over what the phone manufacturers release.

[REQUEST] Bring the new Lineage OS to A (2016) Series

The Lineage OS is just getting out, and since A (2016) series phones really need a stock android based ROM, it would be very nice to see some developers working for this beautiful device as well. Given how popular this phone is, i think it's a shame there's no stock android ROM for it. We beg you developers, TouchWiz is really annoying!

Exynos + a mid-range device will not probably happen, since Exynos is harder to develop on than Snapdragon and since our phone is not a flagship, not a single good developer will bother. Only way is for some rich guy on here to create a bounty for a LineageOS rom, lol.

Hei,
do you think that in near days a rom will be released for this phone?
Or something is blocking it?
Samsung a3 2016 a310f
Thanks
A base pure AOSP rom would be just as good as lineage OS... I know this isn't one of the devices devs pay attention to, but they underestimate them. I would really like a Lineage rom for my SM-A510M.
Me too

Then the driver model / HAL of Android is still a shameful failure and pressure should be put on Google / OHA in some effective way to finally make it proper, granting the way to to use unified, system version independent driver packages published by hw component manufacturers and a way must be provided to install them into ROM bases without complicated kernel compilation and similar ancient Linux-way methods. The wide compatibility of Dalvik / ART apps was accomplished very well without holding back the development of new features regarding the API, so I think they could be able to come up with a similar wonderful solution overcoming Linux kernel's rigid dependency hell. Then the system updates could finally be in the hands of even simple users, raising Android's flexibility on an attainable ground to the level which it always promised and thus securing the platform's hegemony on mobile devices for the future.
(I'm not a ROM developer, but I have years of experiences in a lot other fields of software development so I know what I'm speaking)

Guide some notes or something where can I learn? I am programmer but I lack awareness
My personal opinion is that we won't get Android Q. Too much has to be ported and our main developer kind of left this device maintanance.
Sry. for my bad english.
Mido is still 10th LineageOs most used phone, I am sure that developers will that care of a such huge number of users providing Android10 releases

We also have treble that keep the implementing easier....I am confident we will receive first Android 10 AOSP builds very soon.

I really can't understand how LineageOS can ignore 24782 people (10th most active phone with LOS) by not providing an official Pie version and probably not providing a 10 version either.
LineageOS should be centered on the most used phones, not the newest (if those phones are capable of running the last Android of course).

Just ignore Lineage and move on to something better. There are 2 - 3 ROMs for our phone which run absolutely stable Pie and get weekly or monthly updates.

It used to be Abishek who was in charge of Lineage
But Xiaomi gave him a cool new phone if he stops working on our phone. Lineage also refused a developer who wanted to take over.
So it looks like we will never get a "official" Lineage Pie or Q for our phones.
I don't know if it is a fork, or whatever they are called, but I use Pixel Experience. I get monthly safety updates, and I can say they put new features to it. Nearly no bugs. I suggest it for everyday use.

Is unofficial roms safe?

hey friends i hope you're having a great and healthy life.
my question is very silly i know but i'm curious about it. i'm currently using V2 (Unofficial) Stable MIUI 11 Pie For Redmi 5 Plus/Redmi Note 5 (vince) by rashidmlyk.
i'm just curious and too much consious about my privacy and love to use custom roms. so let come to the point is this rom safe to use ? if yes then great but i am worried about is this possible to this rom contain spyware or data tracker like can this rom steal or view ? private contacts messages pictures video bank related stuffs? please let me know i'm very worried about these things.
Most roms have there code up on there sites so people in the know can read code for any malware. I have been using roms for 8 years with bank apps on phone no issues. I do stick to official roms from developers to though

The answer for your question is quiet hard to give. Because the answer can be taking positive and negative both.
For yes
The customs ROMs are very much smooth and free of bloatware than the stock. Privacy depends upon you yourself. I mean what kind of website you travel and what kinds of apps you use.
For no
The custom rom have open source code so it is quiet easier to get access in much of the cases. Sometimes there will be the case that you will unknowingly sending messages to one and other will get access to that and some question may arise in the unofficial ROMs. And in other points they are still unsecured and buggy if developed by intermediate developer or simple rom porter.
And yes this question is not ao my silly. It has many positive and negative points to think. And for me i prefer unofficial rom is much better than stock since they are twisted and tweaked so battery and performance is very much increased. [emoji9]

Trustworthy sites for downloading roms and lineage OS

You have to trust the source where you get your os from. Its known that middlemen insert malware into smartphone firmwares before sale. But if you flash your rom yourself then you have to trust the downloadsource. I searched a lineage or /e/ os rom for galaxy s4 mini and found this site: "lineageosroms com /s4-i9192/" ( I cant post links because i am new here) I doupt that this belongs to LineageOS, because on the LineageOS site there is no download for this device. My question is, what sources are trustworthy, which not? What about the unofficial roms on XDA Forums? What can i do or should not do with a not so trustworthy rom? Insert Sim Card? Chat about personal life, take personal pictures, banking, buying stuff etc. .. And what about old firmwares which do not receive any updates anymore, are there some rules to follow which make the device save although the rom is old?

The only official site for LOS is this one: https://download.lineageos.org/
You can find over the internet some unofficial websites, with unofficial LineageOs Builds. Idk about them being 100% safe, but Lineageos has its own privacy features, that may prevent (not at 100% obviously) virus to be silent. On XDA, and especially for popular devices (like yours), unofficial build can be trusted. Because a lot of people download them, and if there is something suspicious with the build, it will be soon called out, and the developer banned. So I'd say unofficial build in XDA can be trusted, outside of xda it's more hazardous, and the official build can be trusted eyes closed. If you don't even trust devs donc XDA, you can always make one build from your device tree in GitHub. It's free, and just requires a 64-bit Device (PC).
Thank you very much for your advice. I have a similar question. I dont like the Playstore, because i dont want to have to login in order to install an app. I use playstore download tools like "apkcombo com apk-downloader" or "apps. evozi com apk-downloader" to create download links. Or Mirrors like APKPure or appsapk.com. I know its easy to bind malware to a program, and it can be cryptet so a virus scanner is not able to detect it. Is there a way to verify these apks? The most easy way i could think of would be a list with the program versions with the correlating md5sum, then i can create the md5sum and see if its the same. Further Question: why are mostly the big phones with the big screens supported by linage os? Because the small phones arent used to surf the internet very much and an old firmware doesnt matter in this case? I like the small phones better.

Can confirm, Aurora store is a good value.
And LineageOs (and other ROMs) support popular devices, which are now bigger screen phone. I got to say tho, I think that the mini form factor of the iPhone 12 Mini revived a nostalgic feeling for actual small phones. So I guess that in 2021 some flagships will adopt this form factor and you'll have a community, and ROMs to interact with.
And IMO, small phones have always been the more "mature taste" lol. No seriously, I miss them, and I don't wanna get myself locked in iOS (although it's a pretty good OS)
Thank you very much for this tipp! I will try Aurora store in the near future. Further Question, why is only android on XDA and not ios? I suppose Apple keeps everything closed and there is no community other than the jailbreak stuff. I have an old iphone 5c, i bought it for cheap to see what apple devices are like. I cant recommend apple, because you have to give all your data in order to install free apps, and even contact the support, this is ludicrous! You cant store files on the device, you have to use itunes to get music on the device, its really not pleasant, the only thing you can do is to download your pictures on windows or linux. I am new to smartphones and i dont know very much about them yet, is there a way to bring this iphone to use? Store files like pdfs on it and install apps without the apple appstore? Only a safe way, without the risc of viruses or malware.

Once there was a xda-developers' sister site called "iphone-developers.com" which is dead as of now.
But the "good" new is that XDA has its first iPhone forum recently. It's the iPhone 12 Forums.
If you're still new around xda, you may check a thread I made to introduce users (originally iPhone users) to xda (https://forum.xda-developers.com/apple-iphone-12/how-to/welcome-hello-iphone-users-quick-t4180667)
It's also very important to read the rules, make sure you do that (link is in my signature).
Also, I don't know much about it but you can jailbreak iPhones and install .ipa files on them. Idk if it's safe and virus free tho. Jailbreak uses an exploit, whereas here on android google let users do this freely, with proper tools (I'm talking about root of course).
