XDA app will not open - LG V30 Questions & Answers

I have a Verizon LG v30 and just the other day, I installed the just updated us99830b rom coming from the vs996 30b rom (I think). It has been a little while since I've tried a different rom.
I did a clean install when I flashed it. After flashing, I installed my apps by using the Titanium Backup app. I installed XDA using tibu, restoring both the app and data. When I tried to open the app, it would not open. I get the warning that the app won't open.

I have searched on here and Google, but, can not get the app to open.
I've deleted and installed the xda app multiple times from the play store. I've deleted cache, deleted its data, checked all permissions for it. I've since done a dirty flash of the rom, but, still cannot get XDA to open.
I haven't tried too many other apps, but did have one other one that did the same thing. I can't fermenter which one it was, if I still have it, or not ().
The only way I can get into this app is to open a link to it from an email notification on a watched thread or an already open window on my browser.
So, I don't know if it is rom related or some unknown setting I've inadvertently set.
Any one have any ideas on how to get this app to open correctly?
Thx

Sometimes it helps to install either:
A) An older version of the app which you can find online somewhere
or
B) The same app from a different source, like an alternative store

Well, I did download and try an older version, Sept, 2020, I think. Same problem with just a little different warning (fail to connect to the forum, check with an administrator). This added an icon to my home page, just like the new xda app does, and, just like it, it failed to open. I'm still trying to figure it out, but...
Thx, for the help.

In addition to the xda app, I went to my home screens and tried opening the other apps (25 or 30 or so). All opened fine, except for 1: Allstate Insurance, 2: American Airlines, and 3: YouTube Vanced. They all closed on me like the xda app does. Their icons are on the screen, but the app won't open.

Sorry wish I could help. That happens with different apps on literally every phone I've owned. I know a wipe will fix it, but that's a crazy solution. Maybe there are remnant folders for reasons? You could try looking for a really deep app uninstaller. Not sure how effective it would be haven't used one in years.

XDA App is totally different since Dec 2020, older versions will not work because the forum software changed. If you try the latest from the Play store it should work. Are you saying you are getting a crash from there? Again, do a fresh play store install and not from a backup.

I have just uninstalled all four apps, and reinstalled them. The other three opened up and appears to be working fine, although my All-State app did open and close a couple of minutes later. I reinstalled it, but it seems to be working fine now.
The xda app still will not open, even after a clean install from the Play store. I hand probably tried that a dozen or so times the last 3 days. It just will not open.
I install it and click open from the Playstore sight. It goes to the xda icon on my home screen. I click on it, and get the error message every time.
I changed launchers to my old reliable Nova, and it still does not work .

Can you post your logcat so we can see/fix the error?

I have not done cat logs before. I have been trying all afternoon and evening to get you one and have attached a zip of a cat log (I think) from a downloaded app called "matlog".
Please let me know if this was done correctly in the accompanying attachment. I'm not sure.
Thx

Update
I was not able to ever get the xda app to open tapping on its icon. I even did another clean install. The second install would not even let me download the app from the play store. This was installing the new updated version of the US99830b Rom just posted a few days ago. I used that Rom for about 4 days with no problems (still don't know if the problem with xda is associated with that Rom).
What I have done just a few minutes ago was to delete/uninstall that Rom. I have now installed, and am currently using the Verizon vs99630c/debloated rom. I have not reset up my phone, yet, but did download the xda app from the play store. The xda app is now working properly. I click on the icon and it opens right up.
They only thing now (not related to the xda app, I don't think), is that when I check in the phone settings under about phone and hardware, it shows it to be US998, not VS996 (which is what I'm think I'm on--vs99630c/debloated Rom.
I will finish setting my phone up and see if any problems develop. Hopefully not.
Tnx, for your help.

I believe that debloated VS996 ROMs was not made by JohnFawkes, but someone else and they combined US998/VS996 stuff together. JohnFawkes and him got into it because as you pointed out it would show it's a US998. It was an easy workaround vs the specific tools/procedures JohnFawkes and Seadersn used for their TWRP-flashable zips.

I am currently on the vs99639c debloated rom now. It runs very nice.
The US99830b rom (updated one) also ran very nice. Really the only problem I had with it was not being able to open up xda from the Home page icon.
It also contained a lot of bloat on it. But, I got around most of that, otherwise, no problem with it.
On a personal note, I hope you are doing well with your new family.
Where did you visit in S. A.? I plan on taking a trip later this year to Paraguay.

New Market 3.1.3 (3.1.5 is up now too)

Edit, as of October 3, I'd suggest holding off on the 3.1.6 Market update. Could be fishy. It's signed differently than Google does. Mine below are fine.
EDIT: The new market is cool and all, but I have noticed that if I have multiple google accounts, it switches back and forth... which is REALLY annoying. If you notice issues, go to menu > accounts and make sure your primary is selected. Other than this, it is great.
EDIT 2: there is now a 3.1.5 - the bug mentioned above still exists
DOWNLOAD LINK FOR 3.1.5
If you had 3.1.3, it may just auto-update for you.
---------- below is older information for 3.1.3 --------------
You can thank @MastaTM (XDA: Official_Master) for the new Market (3.1.3)
http://www.multiupload.com/41FQ6PQ3MS
The below is litterally pasted from androidpolice (again, they are on point). I bolded what is new.
Wow, Google is on a roll with the Android Market lately. Since the release of Market v3.0, a number of small updates have come to the Android Market recently, but this is by far the biggest yet. Google has added the long-awaited +1 functionality to the Android Market (which has been on the web version of the Market for quite some time), along with a few other goodies.
There's a brand-new settings menu, as well as click-to-read explanations of app permissions (not developer customizable, unfortunately).
There are also 2 brand-new Market icons to spruce things up a bit (within the Market itself - unfortunately, the app drawer icon is still the same).
For convenience's sake, the size in megabytes of each app, along with its latest update date, have been moved from the bottom of descriptions to the top of individual app pages, which is a very useful change in our book.
Moving on to the thumbnail navigator, Google added a long-overdue sliding transition - a nice touch that makes the Market feel more polished.
Oh, and did we mention you can now use an optional custom PIN for purchases on your phone, instead of leaving your Google Checkout wide open for anyone that picks up your device? If you have kids, or your phone is stolen, this is one awesome feature to have - and really, it makes a lot of sense.
You'll need Unknown Sources enabled in the Settings -> Applications menu to install it.

Ha ha, I went ahead and installed it anyway, and it pretty much looks the same as the last one, except there are finally options to turn off update notifications, AND now all the apps that were showing as update available, but didn't have an update, are finally gone. This is an excellent update. Thanks for the find!

Installing Android Market APK
Could use a little help here. Put a new ROM on my wife's phone, but for some reason, it doesn't have the Market on it. Every time I download the APK for the Market though, it asks me if I want to assign an account to it, which I choose Yes, and then it closes. I'm going to keep working on it, but if anyone has any ideas, please help!

Can you upload it? I did not know there was an update. Curious if it fixes the account switching bug in .3.
EDIT: nevermind... it does not fix the bug.
thank you, this new is better ;D
2.xx is better. 3.xx is too slow and laggy
Someone in the General apps forum uploaded what they claim is version 3.1.6. I pushed it into system/app and over wrote vending.apk but I still have version 3.1.5. Others are reporting success, though. Saying it looks a little more polished.
Edit: Removed link due to suspicious nature of this "update". Search it out and install it on your own, but I've restored my nandroid backup and am done with it until more is known about it.

Android Market 3.3.11

It appears an update to the Android Market is now being pushed out to handsets, and we've got the .apk file for you right now.
Warning: this updated Market does not seem to work very well on Honeycomb tablets, there appears to be a number of glitches.
What's changed? So far, we've found:
•New setting: Auto-update apps (presumably, sets all apps to auto-update mode, woohoo!)
•New setting: Update over Wi-Fi only
•New setting: Auto-add shortcuts (automatically adds homescreen shortcuts for new apps, ala Honeycomb)
•Smaller font
•New app drawer icon
•Microphone (voice command) button in search menu
•Star rating chart on app pages
•Minor UI tweaks

Update: I just installed the market. Everything seems to be in working order. Just d/l the apk. Use ur Root Explorer/File Manager. Run the .apk and install over ur old market. No need to replace vending.apk or setting permissions. Works fine as I did it that way. Smooth as butter.

No Films on Desire HD
Hey. Im on an Atrix in the UK on O2 and am running CM7 (the latest beta) and now have the latest Market (3.3.11) from another link.
I've also forwarded the .apk to my wife and mate, both of whom are on a Desire HD in the UK.
Funny thing is, I have the option of Films, yet, with the same .apk, neither of them do. Just Apps, Games and Books. Very strange! Can anyone explain it? Either I'm not meant to have Films, or they are not meant to!
By the way, I have also used the same .apk on my Uk Transformer, which is unrooted. On there, I too have the options for Films!
I suspect it is HTC thing, but how/why?
(The reason I went looking for the .apk in the first place was because wifey was still stuck with version 2 of market as the Google update wasn't not coming through. Apparently that was an HTC thing - apparently they only release their Market updates with ROM updates. Is that true? or is my wife's phone glitchy? Hers is std uk Voda unrooted)
Thanks guys.

Strange Korean App: Malware or GPlay Bug?

After the recent GPlay update adding 'Installed' and 'All' categories to the My Apps page, I noticed an odd Korean language app at the bottom of the 'All' section that could not be uninstalled.
The comments on the app were all to the effect of "what is this? Why is this on my phone/tablet?" When launched, the app opens Polaris office. One commenter said the app title translated to "test application", and this occurrence appears to be contained to Asus and Pantech devices.
I've been looking around XDA and other forums and can't seem to find anyone else with this problem.
I think this may be a mix up akin to the problems some Samsung owners were having with an odd Russian app replacing their email client. The Play Store thought the the email client WAS the Russian app and, if automatic updating was enabled, replaced it with the Russian one.
Luckily, I didn't have automatic updating on, so Polaris seems intact. I'm not rooted, so I can't look in /system for evidence that the Korean app is in any way on my device. It also doesn't show up in Settings --> Apps.
So, has this happened to anyone else out there? Opinions: Bug or Malware?
One Samsung owner said clearing the GPlay cache removed the Russian bug. I'll try, and post results.
I'll post more details (screenshots, etc.) once I get home.

Strange App
Hi Sturk91
I have/had one as well called Two Stars???? You could check out the link below as there are other people out there
http://www.transformerforums.com/forum/transformer-prime-help/18807-rogue-app.html
Now subscribed to both threads hoping to find the solution :-S
Same here. I have a Transformer Prime, the app showed up just recently (don't know exactly when, but it was in the last 2-3 days).
The icon looks like an HDD with a magnifying glass, and under the magnifying glass there is a "virus"... So basically the icon looks like that it could be a virus scanner. But searching on Google Play for "TwoStars" only brings up 1 application, something to do with cats.
WTF??? (The people over at transformerforums seem just as confused as everybody else... :S)
EDIT: the app does not show in the "Apps" menü, only in the Play Store, there is no uninstall option, only "Open" (the app does not show in the Apps list under Settings). If I open it, it simply runs Polaris office... Strange.

The icon is a DVD/CD with a pair of AKG headphones. That is AKG's logo on the little heasdphones. I also now have this app. Lets hope it goes away very soon, as I don't like the look of it.
Hi,
yeah, you are right! Thanks for the clarification! I did not notice the writing before. Yes, it's a CD/DVD with the AKG headphones around it.
I also opened a ticket with Google Play Support, hopefully they can bring some light into this matter (ticket #993826613).
Thanks for all the input guys, glad to see I'm not alone.
Reassuringly, the app doesn't require any special permissions to run, so it seems pretty harmless so far.
Here's a shot of the app from the Play Store.

I wasn't able to find it when I searched the store either.
Also, just fyi I don't have 3rd party sources enabled, so it couldn't have been something I accidentally side-loaded.
Tried clearing the Play Store cache, as that worked for that Samsung bug I mentioned earlier, but it didn't work out. I'm not all that worried about the app itself, just that it seems the Play Store has some serious bugs. Hopefully Google will work this out in good time.
Anyone else found a solution?
I am having the same problem... two star just appeared as "installed" in google play. Two days ago it was just hanging out in my "apps history"...today it is installed.
Searched the internet and for the most part, nobody seems to have any idea as to what the app is or what it does. The developers blog seems harmless enough.
The strangest thing seems to be that the app does not come up as a result when searching google play for "twostars."
Oh well. Maybe it will just disappear soon!
I have the same problem. I've been trying to identify it in running apps but no success. I also tried with avast but didn't find anything

What ROMS are all of you running? Stock? ROOTED? I'm running a mostly stock but custom ROM and am obviously ROOTED and unlocked, and I do not show this as being installed. No trace of any wierd apps on my Prime, but I sure am curious to find out what the hell it is!

I'm stock, unrooted at the moment. Does your ROM contain Polaris Office? If not, that might be why the app isn't showing up.
I looked into a couple other problems the Samsung crowd has been having and it seems both the dev and the Play Store are at fault. There were two other similar bugs I found. Both involved the Store mistaking a pre- installed app for a completely different one. In one case, when automatic updating was enabled, the stock video player was replaced after the Store mistook it for a blank test app. The other case was identical: a Russian voicemail app was mistaken for the stock email app.
I am pretty sure that the same thing has happened in our case: the Store thinks Polaris Office is this Korean app. And even if this Korean app is actually present on our devices, its completely toothless when in comes to permissions. So I'm not worried. Google will get this fixed soon. And failing that, one of our brilliant XDA colleagues will find a solution.
I don't use ROMs. Also I turned off automatic updates. There are no special permissions for the app. If that helps...
This occurred on my Acer a500 tablet. Custom ROM has Polaris office, which opens if you click that update. I uninstalled Polaris and the rogue app went away from my market, but I don't like even the thought of that.
Will follow this thread.
Thought I'd check this out and it also seems to be listed on Google Play for me, but "thankfully" not in my installed list on the prime.
Running stock rom & rooted.
I'm running stock ICS 4.0.3, unrooted .15 firmware

Great news! Checked Google Play today and it seems to have gone away. It no longer shows up anywhere in my apps list. I had not uninstalled anything in the
meantime, just seems to have gone away on it's own.
Just checked google pay and app dissapeared for me too

[Tip] Fix App Associations in Sense 3.6/4.0

It seems that because of an Apple lawsuit, all links (YouTube, Play Store, etc) open in the web browser instead of their respective apps. It no longer gives an option to choose like it did in gingerbread. This drove me nuts and I searched around the internet for a fix. I hope this helps someone with the same problem.
1) Delete HtcLinkifyDispatcher.apk using System Tuner or Root Explorer (apk located in /system/app). Note: Freezing the apk won't work, it needs to be removed.
2) Reboot phone
3) Clear defaults for browser in Settings/Apps

So THAT is why.. I always wondered if I could safely remove that APK from my old rom, now I wish I had. Like apple owns the RIGHTS to apps getting utilized.. I'll probably figure it out later, but this doesn't actually break the app association function in system settings right?
Mainly this post is a bump for your thread, this is good to know, and I think this apk is still being included in all the roms..
You can also remove the app using titanium backup.
Thanks

Why not just use app associations in the settings menu?
I stand corrected... MrMako posted THIS LINK and when I clicked it, it gave me option for play store app

The app associations in the settings is incomplete. Try opening a YouTube link on your phone without this tweak and it will force it open in the browser instead of giving it an option to open it in the YouTube app.
The reason HTC added the app associations in the settings menu is to get around an Apple patent that is being enforced by the ITC (thus the delay in customs for HTC ONE X at the US customs). Apple owns a patent which allows intelligent app associations by knowing which app to open by reading the link. HTC lost that in the courts so we get a workaround that is not as good as the old option.
This is not a big deal for most people but I hate the YouTube mobile site and would rather want my YouTube links to open in the app.

Mine still opens in the browser, even after clearing caches, to be honest, I think the app htclinkify or whatever the name is happens to be the app that links contacts, but I may be wrong.
Well guess I'm the only unlucky one, lol.

Worked for me!
You sir, are a flippin' genius! Also, Apple are a bunch of asshats, but that's nothing new.
Just curious, those who have completed this mod, can you click on a phone number or email (check both please) and the phone bring up either the dialer or new email to compose? I tested it and these stopped functioning as the links call the app that is renamed/deleted.
Thanks!!

Clicking phone number does bring up a dialer for me and clicking an email link brings up an option to choose.
Try clearing the defaults for Mail/Gmail and dialer and that might solve your problem.

I'd have to test it, but I don't use gtalk.. but since gtalk is a purely google app, I doubt it would have problems from deleting a HTC specific file. I would go ahead and stop the app, delete the files in system settings, or if that doesn't work uninstall and reinstall the app..
As I said, there is no reason that gtalk should have problems after this..
I just tried this and none of the links open now. When I try for example to open a link from Reddit News, nothing happens. It doesn't open it with youtube app or the browser. Nothing happens at all
EDIT: Seems like freezing the app with titanium backup doesn't work. I uninstalled it and it works fine now
Thanks OP

I found the same to be true about freezing the app.
From what I have experienced, this occurs with the stock browser. I installed Dolphi Browser and I am able to open maps with the maps/navigation app, as well as click numbers and it opens in the phone app. Maybe something to consider.
Sort of easy fix is to install the google chrome beta and make that default. When i click on links on that browser (or even facebook) it asks again. Thank GOD!!!
Question. I don't really mind the fact that the linkify dispatcher exists, and the benefits of removing it don't outweigh the drawbacks for me. But I am darn tired of seeing it showing up in my multitasking menu. Looks unprofessional and tacky.
So, my question is: how can I hide HTCLinkifyDispatcher from the multitasking menu without actually removing it?

I've yet to see a benefit to keeping it, so I don't know why you'd want to keep it. Remove it, then it is a non issue.

Really nice so far. Theme engine is flawless so far and opened browser up for first time and it logged me right in almost instantly. Have had issues with that since first lollipop build went out.
I can't use any third party browser all the ones I try won't open they fail with weird errors.
Testing update
Everything seems pretty solid for a first build. I went from the 3-25 build of 5.0.2. To Pac roms the last couple days. To clean slate and fresh install this morning. Only thing i have is still no Netflix. Have tried uninstalling and a reboot. Install and a couple reboots. And there is no mute on calls. Which by no means are deal breakers for me. Also GPS is a little off however finds location pretty quickly. I use my LTE connection for all my net use. I average around 250-350gb per month so a daily driver is a must for me. Thanks for your hard work on this Wilson.
On a side note. I don't see the thanks button anymore. Am i missing something.

Did you try another reboot after installing Netflix?
Check this file /data/data/com.netflix.mediaclient/shared_prefs/nfxpref.xml:
Did you see this line before "</map>"?
<int name="nflx_player_type" value="10" />
If not, manually add this line...

Default CM file manager will do...change access mode to root in settings...
You can get a logcat for me to trace...It could be due to the same libc issue. Sorry no netflix in my country.
Other than Chrome force-closing, this seems to running well for me. My last week or two of 5.0 nightlies gave me a lot of trouble connecting to my home wifi, but this is not an issue here. I did wipe clean for this, whereas I was dirty flashing 5.0, so maybe that has something to do with it.
EDIT: Not sure if this would be ROM related, but I do not have an option within either of my Google accounts to synchronize my calendar. I can synchronize Gmail, App Data, Contacts, People, and Fit data, but that's all. I do not even have a greyed out option for calendar; it's simply not there.

Confirmed. 4/2 build is flawless. Everything works. FCS are gone. Other than missing MUTE in call everything is pristine.
Thank you!
I'm Going to have to give this another go. I reverted back to Alliance build 30 because of not receiving calls all of the time on a lot of the lollipop builds. And it is hit or miss as to weather I would receive a call and not rom specific.
