Charging Message and Question - Samsung Galaxy S21 Questions

Two questions. First, is the S21 fast charging a function of the charging brick AND charging cable or just the brick? In other words, would any cable be able to fast charge with a 25W brick or does the cable need to be compatible too?
Second, I'm seeing this message every time I plug the phone in to charge. I hit OK and the phone charges (very slowly) so I assume this is nothing to be concerned about per se. I've tried at least five charging cables and various power sources from bricks, PC, car USB ports, etc. and they all give this message. Granted, none of the cables or bricks are Samsung branded so I assume that is whats causing the message.

I’m using the t-mobile version of the s21.
I have not ever seen that screen. I am charging with a variety of chargers and cables (Some are usb type a to type c,some are type c to c.) I’ve used ravpower chargers (A 2-port model with my laptop and a smaller 30 watt model.j also lower output legacy type a usb sockets on power outlets. I put the original Samsun cable away in a drawer.

You need to use a fast charging compatible cable and brick. Otherwise fast charging will not will not engage.

I currently have 81% charge. When I plug it into a charger (brick or PC), it says 6 hours and 15 minutes to full. That can't be normal. I have fast charging enabled.

It isn't. Try calibrating the battery. Discharge to auto shutdown, charge overnight to 100%, repeat.
Allow to remain on charger for 2 hours after it's showing 100%
Try clearing system cache.
Try charging with phone powered down (fast charging should work even then)
Try a factory reset.
Use a known good OEM fast charger and cable.
If that doesn't get it, it's probably a hardware or firmware issue.
Note: fast charging will not engage if battery temperature is too low or high. Best charge start temp is around 85°F.
If battery temp goes above about 100°F fast charging will disengage and so will all charging shortly after if temperature continues to rise.

What would be a normal charging time till full if you're at 81%...roughly speaking.

Why doesnt the battery

why doesn't the battery charge while it is plugged in while I'm watching a movie or talking to somebody online it's ridiculous amber light never turned green only when it sitting idle

Most likely because what you're doing, especially the movies is drawing more power than what's actually being pumped into the battery. Get battery monitor widget by "3c" in the market. Very very detailed info about your battery. Ish you never even thought about/existed. Haha. Its very helpful.

How is it being charged? USB or AC... The answer is important, as USB only charges half as fast as AC.
Regardless, the reason is that if you are using the phone heavily, you are using a lot of power. If you are using a lot of power, you may be using all or almost all of the power coming from the charger just to operate the phone.
I have seen power use rates when using the phone heavily that are around 700mA, that is more than the 500mA that you get when charging via USB, and almost as much as the 1000mA that AC provides.
Heck, I have seen power use rates that are up to 1100mA a few times. That is higher than even the AC input.
Here is a screen shot of my charging over the last 12 days. I have NEVER gotten 1k+ (results may vary. As to why, stated in the following) you can see on the bottom screen the max mA peeked at 972. USB doesn't charge at "half" the mA as wall chargers. I thought that too, but did some tests (while VERY bored at work. Haha) and have seen 600 to around 800 mA. It varies on a number of things.
Ie: the USB cord itself. As some are designed for data only or faster transfer rates rather that charging taking priority. (charging light may be on, but thats just because it knows somethings plugged in. Or you could just have a Bonk one. They're are MANY different USB cables today.
The phones kernel, because you'll notice when the phone is damn near dead, USB or wall, will charge at a higher mA and fluctuate at different battery percentages.
A good/stock kernel will charge super fast when battery is very low to get you somewhat charged quickly. Then in the upper percentages it should slow way down especially in the high 90%'s to effectively complete/finish out the charge rather than just throwing rediculous power into the battery across the whole process. Also what other stuff you may have turned on, on the phone like "enable always on mobile data" may be detrimental. Hope this helps man.

It was only a few times I noticed the power use that high.
USB can vary, but general rule is 500mA can be counted on as that is the max that the standard provides.
All charge rates will vary. The main problem is the fact that we usually charge a device that is powered on. The varied power use will cause fluctuations in charge rate.
I need to research more into how Li-Ion charges when the device is still in use. I do know how they charge when not in use, and all the little details of it. The biggest problem is that powered on really messes with how a Li-Ion battery can charge.
I need to get out my stand alone computerized Li-Ion battery charger and do some testing. I have been wondering exactly how much these batteries hold if actually charged properly. Too bad that the Stock OEM batteries are 3.8v nominal, they charge to a higher overall voltage and my charger is not set up to handle the new voltage so I couldn't charge the stock to a real 100%.
if u charge by AC with a 1000 mA you should be fine
Are you watching the movie on your phone or do you have it connected to a TV? The screen being on will draw a lot of power I believe.
Always always wall charged; only used USB to adb stuff never let it charge via usb

[Q] Galaxy S3 - Loses Power While Charging!?

Hi guys,
I have had my S3 for 2 years now and noticed this problem for the first time around 5 weeks or so ago. Basically i noticed that it would not charge much after a long period of time charging, and also when using the device the battery would deplete a lot more quickly than what I am used to.
On investigation it appears that I am losing power while charging. I downloaded the application 'galaxy charging' which lets me know how many mA are being drawn etc.
Via mains the reference is always 1098 or around 1amp as it should be and via USB it is 466mA. This app monitors the average current being drawn while the device is charging and i notice that EVERY time i charge via either mains or USB the device NEVER charges at its max capacity (1098mA via mains and 466 via USB)
What i see which happens is as soon as i plug in my charger to mains it will start off close to maximum, around 800mA and then after 10 seconds or so it will slowly come down to say 600mA, a further 20 seconds or sooner we are down to 300mA and eventually it will either settle around this figure if i am lucky so i actually charge my phone (all be it very slowly) but much more likely it will always drop off to 100mA. At this power the phone drains more battery being on than power being given to it to charge so the battery goes down while charging.
Does anyone know what could be causing this?
Troubleshooting attempted:
I have replaced the battery with a new one. I still get the same problem
I have replaced the USB lead, i *might* get a slightly higher stable mA on average on one but maybe this is probably just coincidental
I have tested via mains and USB, the error occurs on both, I have tested mains where nothing else uses the socket and USB on a PC where the only USB port being used is the phone.
I have changed my ROM, I am now using ArchiDroid. I thought doing a complete reset and putting on a new OS might fix this but apparently not.
Right now I am out of ideas and am left thinking this is some internal hardware error, but can anyone else offer any suggestions or has this happened to anyone else?
Appreciate any responses,
James
You could try a custom kernel which allows you to override the charging current, but you may find the charging circuit inside the phone is damaged.
Easy solution if so is to get a desktop charger and second battery.

i had this same problem but simply replacing the cable solved it
i tried nokia cable and now it is fine ,
if that also dosent help than you can try googy max kernel or boeffella kernel and check for "ignore unstable power option"
Get one of these bad boys

Hi everyone, thanks for all your replies. However it was this one that fixed my issue. Since i already had the boeffla kernal on my phone i found the setting to 'ignore unstable power' and since having that checked i now charge at a constant 460mA via USB and 1098mA via mains. Thank you so much!!

10 hours to recharge 75%? This can't be normal can it?

I've had this N9 LTE for about a week and a half, so i'm still not used to it fully, but this, this can't be normal right? I havn't seen a device take 10 hours to recharge 75% since the first iPhone in 2007. Plus I have ElementalX Kernal with fast recharge enabled...I don't get it

find a good cable and a good 1.5A-2A charger, the junk HTC gave us is something out of their "just include something" bin. I haven't even taken the stock charger out of its packaging. its good in a pinch when you must have a charge, but not worth using on a higher power device like the N9.
also, give a kernel like elementalX a try, it should enable faster charging..
anker makes some good self regulated (based on needs) multi port chargers, give those a try with some anker 1' cables.

Stock charger works fine here. Takes 6 hours or so to charge.

I'm using my note 4 fast charger and cable. Can't be better quality than that. And as mentioned, I'm already on ElementalX
After you change the cable you might realize that this won't solve the problem. Most of the times it works better if you simply reboot the tablet, the charging time will significantly decrease (~3-4 h depending on your kernel). Share if something changes.

You didn't mention if you have a custom rom? I'm using a cm based rom and there is a known bug that the tablet does not show the correct battery status... I have to reboot it to see the true batters stats

Yeah that's not normal... I would now try the stock charger... That's what I use and it works fine... If that doesn't help then I'll would call Google for a replacement
I'll wait for 5.1 to come out and will take a decision then. Thanks for your input
it's not normal for this to happen, but i've seen a few threads where this does happen and it doesn't matter the kernel, charger or cables. sometime the device gets stuck at charging at less than usb 2.0 speeds. it doesn't happen all the time, but it's pretty crappy when it does happen. one suggestion was to unplug and replug each time you charge it to hopefully not get stuck with the bug through that charge session. when i do catch it trickle charging i just replug it. i generally charge in just over 4hrs for a full charge using a samsung note charger and cable.
I have been using the stock charger with a third-party USB cable (I needed something longer) and it has never taken more than 3-4 hours for a full charge.
Try using Ampere app from the play store to test different chargers and cable combinations. It helped me to eventually go with a iPad charger and a 20awg 1m cable which charges at an average of 1700mha which means a full charge of about 3hrs or less (stock ROM + ElementalX fast charge enabled)

Not sure if this is the same issue, but when I charge my n9 overnight, the battery indicator only shows like 23% charge. However, if I restart the n9 it updates and shows 100%.
Anyone have that issue? Buy
I think my Nexus 9 charges faster with the Fire-Ice Kernel

Charging problems

Hello everybody!
I have the following problem. Some time ago I hadinterruptions during the charging process. This has become noticeable that in between the screen was flashing up and the lightning symbol as it normally is when its charging was not on the battery symbol. This problem has been getting worse to the point that the device has only loaded temporarily. So almost by luck. Sometimtes it didnt work for hours and then it charged the whole evening. I even had the feeling that it has charged, even though my phone has not shown. The battery capacity increased after few hours. The end was that the phone no longer charged at all. Then I ordered a new charging socket and installed it. Since then everything works fine and I was satisfied.
Today, however, to be exact half an hour ago, I had that bad feeling again. The screen flashed up and the charging interrupted. It was now three times. What's going on here? I hope that it does not become worse. I ordered a new battery on the internet before all these problems came up, which was touted as original. Before changing the charging socket I have tried this with both batteries. Same problem. The power adapter was able to charge the phone of a friend of mine but not my phone.
Does anybody have an idea and can help me? Thanks alot!
Same here mate, now it stop charging completely... Have you found any solution? Tried replacing the charging port, but I was told that it is the motherboard...
If anyone have any idea would be helpful. Thanks!

I have same problem. Phone seems to charge well till 80-90% then, charging interrupts. Before my warranty has finished, I have contacted with Samsung. They advised to restore phone to factory setting, what I did. Nothing helped. I have changed chargers ofc for original one, bought new battery, luck of improvement... What is more I have noticed that my phone consumes battery a way faster than before – I have to plug phone every 6-8h with 3g, GPS and BT on. When I use google maps in my car in spite the fact phone is connected to charger (2A Samsung original one!) phone runs down slowly :/ I am rly disappointed with this phone… Guys did you find solution?
I have two of these phones, and both have developed charging issues after a year or two. I bought two OEM batteries to replace, and still does not help.
Tried various chargers, various cables. Intermittent charging at first, then nothing. 2 bricks.

May be the problem 's in the connection between MicroUSB port and mainboard. I suggest you supply 5V to 2 pin and waitting for full battery. If this solution working, buying wireless charging Pad .

battery good, but always shows battery needs charging!

hey all, i got this phone, i was told just a dead battery. put it on the charger and it never charged up. the screen just showed that i needed to charge the battery. i did the power & volume button trick, and the at&t logo showed up, then went back to dead. so i pulled the battery and tested it for charge. it came back 3.5. then i checked the charging port, and the contact part was broken. put in a new cable & port. still showing battery needs charging. got a different battery, still shows battery needs charging. only booting to at&t logo. what can i check or do next? thanx!
@chowceal
May be battery's calibration is wrong. If your phone's Android is rooted then you can try to re-calibrate it. I use "Advanced Battery Calibrator" app - what is attached - to do this from time to time.
the phone is not booting up to be able to use any app.
@chowceal
The phone tries to charge "by hardware" from whatever you plug it into. Then after some time it tries to boot, and part of the boot process will run off the internal battery.
If the charging happens from a slow charging powersource, the charge in the battery will be insufficent to bridge the "no charging" part of the boot process, the phone will shut down again and not resume charging!
So, if you charge from a "faster" charger, that can provide more current, then by the time the boot happens, there will be enough charge in the battery to bridge the gap.
My advice: Use the factory charger and/or a wall charger and not USB.
That is what I would do:
Plug the phone into the factory charger and cable.
Hold down the power button for several minutes (like 4-5 minutes) - The phone will cycle through several booting/charging screens.
Release the power button, then press the power button to make the phone boot.
Plug the phone into a computer or other non-factory charger; it should begin to charge, albeit slowly.
Finally after it has charged over 10% or more, plug it into the factory charger and see if it charges normally.
Important: Never charge over 80%, always start charging when 30% reached.

My POV: As you are not willing to do as suggested, it is best to take the phone to the repair.
since both batteries were at capacity, i dont see a need to charge them. yes, i could take it in for repair, but im trying to learn to do this myself. o, and thanx for your POV.
and im still looking for an answer as to what i need to test for.
