I rooted my Galaxy Tab S6 using the Magisk-only method detailed here after updating to Android 11. I had trouble with the post-Odin step (pressing power and volume up right after screen turns off) so I had to do the flash a couple more times before I got that right, but everything shows as rooted now.
However, my 256GB internal storage is only showing up as 32GB! Is that a firmware thing, or a partitioning thing? How can I fix it?
I'm confused about the stock firmware. I only see ONE firmware for my CSC/model/security revision, but there are 2 hardware versions (128gb and 256gb). How do I know which hardware version the firmware is for?
OK, and am I correct to assume this is going to wipe everything? Anyway thanks for the info! If it requires a wipe I will probably postpone this until the next time there's a security update.

Just Hard reset it from Android recovery ( stock rom ) and Format data ( custom recovery )

I actually have used SmartSwitch to seed the tablet, but it doesn't work for all my apps. Some of those apps I'm able to restore from TitaniumBackup backups, but not all, and restoring with TB often hangs. So you idea of just making a blanket clone of the internal storage makes a lot of sense! Is there a reference of what locations to backup? I mean can I avoid backing up the app/obbs themselves and just get their data?

So, I've no idea specifically where to start, so I'll just go from the beginning. Earlier today, I flashed a stock firmware for my device (I9300XXDLJ4 from the 'Stock Firmwares' thread) using Mobile Odin Pro successfully. No problems, except for when I forgot to factory reset the first time through.
More recently, I tried to re-flash CF-Root 6.4 to regain root, which didn't work as well as I had hoped, as I am now left with an unmountable /data partition on my internal SD, which means I cannot go any further in the 'factory reset -> restore' route. I have no idea what to do anymore - 30 Google searches later and about 20 separate flashes of firmware hasn't helped and I'm at the end of my tether. I really have no idea what other information to supply, so I guess if you guys have any idea you can let me know.
In addition, although a blank, yet working OS and phone would be better than a paperweight, I would like to keep my internal sd-card intact (or at least the partition with all my stuff on it). I also have a CWM6 back-up on my external sd if that could help me in any way.
So, yeah, whatever you can think would be greatly appreciated please and thank you.
(Long story short - unmountable /data partition on my internal sd means I can't boot/flash any 'proper' OS / it's soft bricked.)
UPDATE: Booted into stock Samsung firmware as above, not sure if it's because it's still got all the stuff from before and I haven't wiped it or it's genuinely fixed. May as well spend another half-hour on Odin to see what I can do.
UPDATE 2: Fixed. Mounting the /data partition only worked once I flashed the stock firmware - whether it's because of the recovery or the OS, I'm not entirely sure, but I'm now able to read/write to the /data partiton and I've just booted up my previous CM10 nightly, so... yeah. DO what you will with this thread mods. I'm done here, for now.

Hi all,
My sister-in-law hooked up her phone to her laptop and then Kies responded there was an update. I know for a fact that she was on 2.3.6 and the suggested update was the ICS one.
The phone booted in download mode and then got stuck on 12%, then she turned to me.
I'm pretty familiair with Android phones and I rooted and installed custom ROMs on quite a lot of phones. But, it was always with a full backup and I always made sure the phone numbers were on the SIM card as an extra precaution.
Now, this phone is NOT rooted, just stock 2.3.6 on it, she made no backups of any kind and there's no external SD card in it so the photo's are on the internal memory.
So, what I need first, if possible, is access to the internal memory. Normally, I can mount the memory in clockworkmod recovery, but this phone is not rooted so no CWM. Can I flash a kernel to get CWM? And if yes, which one?
Secondly, is there any way to backup the phone numbers? If I flash a new ROM I will loose al numbers, right?
Hope someone can help, she's quite desperate! (me too actually)
one part of information I forgot to give;
when I pull out the battery and reboot the phone after putting it back, I just get the phone/warning sign/pc logo and the text "firmware upgrade encountered an Issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies ans try again"
When I do that, Kies sees the phone, starts downloading a recovery image of some sort and stay on 100% for a few minutes and then closes without any error message.
Numbers are stored in Google account, and Internal memory is not formatted if you do a factory reset. I could recommend you to move your question to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1648351&page=148

Hi, I just flashed a stock ROM of the same version with Odin.
Phone is ok again, nothing is lost.
Camera was set on storing photos in internal memory, I changed it.
All contacts were already stored on the SIM card so no sync to Gmail

Okay guys, so I was wondering, since I dropped my phone the other day and now the touchscreen doesn't work at all.
I took it to a store to get it repaired and they were unable to, so I believe vodafone will replace it for $229
But my phone does do a titanium backup every 2 days at 3am, so I'm going to wait for that to happen before I take it to vodafone.
Anyway, onto the point of this thread, is there anyway to backup the internal memory of the phone?
I have done a CWM backup, but I'm unsure if that backs up the internal sd card?
Could someone confirm whether it does or doesn't, and if not if there is any way to access the internal memory with out using the phone?

a nandroid (CWM) backup includes the phones storage incl. the internal SD card if I am not wrong.
If you have some kind of USB wire, you could try to connect a USB mouse to your S3 to navigate without the touchscreen btw.

well a nandroid should return your phone to the status which you had when you did it, that includes usually all data but I might be wrong with my statement for the SDcard based on the following thread or this one. Whereas I think the reference SDcard in those examples would more be equal to our "external SDcard" and not to our "internal SDcard" which is more like an internal storage, but I might be wrong.
Nandroid backup/restores don't touch the sdcard. They backup to the sdcard but the nandroid only handles /system, /data, /data/data, /cache, boot, and recovery.

The phone is in installation mode. ADB on linux can't detect it. I don't have access to a windows PC at the moment.
And I can't seem to turn the phone on..
Does anyone know much about the phones motherboard and circumventing the phones power button? Apparently there is some sort of issue there..
Or about accessing the phones storage without turning the phone on?

My Father has a Galaxy S II , and he is always complaining that his phone is low on space.
The phone is 16GB and has another 16GB MicroSD card.
Most of his on-board integrated 16GB is free, and his MicroSD card is almost completely empty, the problem is that this phone has a very small Android OS 2GB partition, and every time he installs an app it always leaves something on the OS partition (even after manually moving every possible app to SD using the built in Move To SD, and placing all photos and videos on MicroSD). So even with very few Apps installed his phone is always begging for space since essentially he can only make use of 2GB of his 32GB of storage.
So I have considered maybe the best way to fix this his issue, is to install a Custom ROM on his phone, which only contains 1 Single Partition for the integrated 16GB of storage space, and another partition for the 16GB of MicroSD storage.
Thus eliminating the limited 2GB OS partition. (basically make it like every new Android phone since the galaxy S2)
I have never used a custom Android ROM so this is new to me ( i am more familiar with PC's).
So my primary question before I start looking for info and procedures on rooting and custom roms for this phone is as follows:
IS it possible to even install a new android OS on this phone which will have only one primary partition, or is this phone forever destined to only work as it is now with a small 2GB OS partition? In other words is there a hardware limitation which prevents this phone from addressing more than 2GB for its OS partition?

You can repartition the phone using a modified PIT file. You will be able to increase the Data partition to avoid the "out of space" when installing or updating apps. The tradeoff is to have a smaller internal SD partition.
I have done it to my S 2.
There is a thread with clear instructions on how to do it. You will have to learn to use Odin, but that will be very useful as long as you have Samsung phones.

Will starting from scratch with a new OS allow me to set my partitions (just like on a PC) ?

No. You must use the Odin / Pit file to modify partition sizes.
And yes, that assumes you will flash a new rom.

Don't forget to mention that re-partitioning your phone will delete all data so do a backup!!!!!

Here's what's happening ... I have an Samsung Galaxy SM-J500FN 2015 model phone,
a while ago I rooted it (back then it was under Android v5) ... I wanted to tweak some settings but I did something terrible, I played with KNOX.
Apparently KNOX and root don't go well together, my phone wouldn't boot anymore (rebooting loop).
Anyway, it was nothing, I just used Odin and a fresh new Official ROM (Android Marshmallow v6.0.1) and my phone was working again.
But now I discovered something, my phone is supposed to have an Internal Storage of 8GB, and that's the amount my memory settings show, but something was wrong with that, so I searched and after some time I understood that even though it said 8GB, my true storage was 4GB.
(More exactly I had 8GB but 4GB were constantly full, not even used by the system).
After a day I understood what might have happened :
My older ROM that has crashed wasn't erased when I flashed the new ROM, so now half of my Internal Storage is occupied by default meaning that I have two partitions on my phone (similar to when you install Windows and Linux on one PC).
But I cannot find any way to erase/reset my phone totally to get back those 4GB of memory.

Ok, first thing you should know, that if your phone is labeled as an 8GB phone then you will only get 4GB no matter what you do, now there is no way that there are 2 roms on one system partition, what may be taking the space could be old data from the old rom like in /android folder and could possibly also be media files from apps that was installed in previous rom like Facebook photos, WhatsApp videos, pics, and voice messages...etc, installing stock rom with Odin doesn't erase any files, but it completely replaces the rom in system partition with new rom.

the reason why you will get 4 only is because the 8GB includes system partition, data partition, cache, preload (if there is one) in addition to the space taken from the formatting, it's pretty much the same like when you buy a 8GB sdcard and you get only about 7.3GB, or when you buy a 16GB phone and you only have 11.5GB for media (my case..), or when you buy a 32GB phone and you find about 8GB already taken from the phone and you get to use about 23GB for media files (my dad's case and you'll notice that in any other 32GB phone), that's what i meant, you also can check any 8GB phone and you will find that he only has 4GB for media...i hope i explained it in an easy way.
in my case i have an s2 with 16GB
i only have 11.5GB for media, and there is 512mb system partition and 512mb preload, and 2GB data partition, and small cache partition.., so that makes it about 14.5GB in total, the missing 1.5GB is due to formatting as far as i know, same as the sdcards thing i said earlier..
p.s: those partitions are unaccessible by default, they are hidden from the user, only way to access them is by rooting the phone and using a root explorer.
