Moto G Power (2020) XT2041DL Tracfone Bootloader Unlock? Mods? Root? - Moto G Power Questions & Answers

Hi everyone, long time xda lurker, first post. I bought a family member an unlocked Moto G Power (2020) for Xmas and 5 months later it took a fatal ride in the laundry machine The prices now for an unlocked phone aren't so great, so I bought the Tracfone version (XT2041DL) that I hoped to be able to modify back into a vanilla "Retail" phone. My problem isn't with the carrier lock (it will stay on a Tracfone carrier for many years), but with the bootloader lock. If I understand correctly, Tracfone won't unlock the bootloader even after carrier unlocking, so there's no way to install the vanilla "retail" ROM on it? Even if not possible to load a different ROM, at the very least I want the ability to remove the added carrier bloatware that Tracfone installs, but doesn't this require root?
I believe that one other user of this forum mentioned getting XT2041DL root, but with a locked bootloader, won't that still prevent me from making any permanent changes to the system folder? I did manage to find one guide at the following website, but I don't know if it's a reliable source of information [link] or if it will allow me to accomplish my goal. If I'm stuck with Tracfone's version of the ROM I will probably just return it and take the financial hit of the unlocked retail. Also, forgive me if I sound uninformed, I'm still very much a novice although I've managed to root a few items previously with the help of xda guides. Really appreciate the insight or advice from the community here.

You can remove bloatware with ADB shell commands.

same question, can anyone suggest?

TracFone won't unlock the bootloader. I've tried the guide in the link OP posted and it doesn't work. One of the ADB commands does bring up the unlock warning but does nothing from there. Unfortunately the only way to unlock the BL is through Motorola's website. If you're phone is eligible, they'll send a code to unlock the phone.

I don't think tracfone is eligible to be boatload unlocked that is the whole question where it started..not sure what adb shell cmd you are referring too? Is that work for your XT2041DL? Or you have other moto g power variants?

That is carrier network unlock, not bootloader unlock.
After that, moto still refuses to unlock bootloader.

Not too sure, but the steps for unlocking the bootloader mention using the .bin file from an LG V40, so I'm not sure if it's legit or not...

Could you elaborate, which resources did you use and what was the process, also does this now mean you are able to install TWRP, if so, which exact version and then are you able to root through TWRP or ODIN?
Wonder if there's a place one can find out whether this would work on US AT&T locked version, will unlock, speaking of which, why are there videos out there talking about that there's a cost to unlocking carrier, isn't the unlock free and provided on AT&T's website, what's the difference in terms of privacy risks and $?
Thanks

Gotcha.
Did you go through the full process of unlocking your bootloader, or did you just use fastboot to get the device ID credentials and get an email from LG with the .bin file?
You got me curious!!
Does this mean that upon unlocking the bootloader, installing a different ROM, rooting, one unlocks also the carrier, or is separate issue and how come some pay money for it when it seemingly is free on the carrier website? Scam? Or how are these private persons able to unlock the carrier for you? Say AT&T -> Global.
Also, is TWRP always device model specific or is there an option which is compatible for multiple models, likely to work with G8X in this case, I'm assuming a G8X specific TWRP does not exist.

I haven't tried it yet, so I can't say for sure, but you have the SDK tools you need on your desktop?
And you're running the CMD window from within the same folder that you have the SDK tools?

I don't think that matters, all commands are recognized, it's that AT&T has disabled bootloader, unless someone releases and exploit like this: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1671396
https://www.xda-developers.com/boot...s-been-found-for-the-sprint-oneplus-7-pro-5g/ - more recent
Can't do anything, as far as I understand it. So I guess no root, no twrp/recovery, no privacy. If these exploits are heavily model specific it will probably never happen with the G8X. Mainly I wanted to have root, de-google the etc. the phone with micro-g, and have twrp, hopefully customize roms, but I should have done more research beforehand.
Would be better if https://www.xda-developers.com/leaked-eu-proposal-smartphone-batteries-replaceable/ gets passed and soon So one can buy a phone at least somewhat worth buying, as we don't even own what we buy these days, communist beast system devices and all. What a crock.
But aleast people now will know that the guide is legit (?), thanks to our Bratan here (cpc), provided you don't have a carrier branded phone -> locked the bootloader.

LM-G850UM
I wonder if I can unlock the carrier from AT&T at least, the unlock portal at at&t says that it's still under contract or something like that, not sure what that means, will the guys contract run out in 12-24 mo and I will be able to unlock it through the AT&T portal or has he somehow bailed on it and it's locked forever.
I've also seen sites selling unlock codes, which this thing does ask for when I put in a different sim card, however I don't know if these sites are legit and if they work for never models like the G8x.
So that's where I'm currently at.

I'm not sure, I'm on Bell in Canada, and since 2017 all devices in Canada are sold as unlocked.
If you have an older device that IS carrier locked, you can get the carrier to unlock it for you at no charge.
I used to use a site to unlock devices, and the price ranged anywhere from $10 to $100 depending on the device, but I can't for the life of me remember what site that was.
That was back around 2012/2013.
Mine is also LM-G850UM, but I haven't tried the process of unlocking the bootloader yet.
I'm concerned that once I submit the device ID, it will void the warranty, and if it doesn't actually unlock the bootloader, then I've wasted the warranty for nothing.

SM-T867V Software Modifications

I've been trying to go through this forum to see if you have already answered this question but could not find any reference to it.
I received a Verizon Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 as a gift and even though it is supposedly unlocked I have difficulty using my local sims in it. For starters every time I insert a non Verizon sim I get a notification reminding me that it isn't a Verizon sim that I cannot dismiss. Also, I would like to remove and not disable the preloaded apps that came with the device and completely remove/change the Verizon startup logo. I has some prior experience with rooting older android phones (up to Android 6) but am a little worried about making any modifications to this tablet. I know there are step by step instructions on installing TWRP on the SM-T860 and T865 but can anyone be so kind as to walk me through just rooting my SM-T867V and removing the bloatware/boot logo and fixing the non Verizon sim thing so that my device can use the LTE capabilities?
VZW is known for locking the bootloaders of their devices so in short no TWRP or root. As for removing some of the bloat it can be done through ADB commands without root.
Thanks.
Thanks for the reply. Any links to the guide regarding the adb removal? And if I were to get the bootloader unlocked, what would be my next steps?
Here's a tutorial.
https://www.xda-developers.com/uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/
As for the bootloader I meant locked as in cannot be unlocked. No TWRP, No Root, No Custom Binaries Period. The only models of the Tab S6 that allow bootloader unlocks to my knowledge are the T860 or T865
Thanks again
I guess I have to annoy Verizon and have them unlock the bootloader. I really want to get rid off the branding and the non verizon sim message.

They definitely won't be unlocking the bootloader. However the SIM lock should be handled if the prerequisites are met.

Moto G Power XT-2117-4 newb

I just got this phone from Boost Mobile and sent away for an unlock code. Afterwards I wanted put on a very basic ROM.
I havent done this is a while and saw some instructions on how to root and unlock the boot loader. Is rooting necessary?
Also, the stock roms people were posting are for the XT-2041 Sofia. Will this work? Thanks for any guidance.

I think its not possible for Boost Mobile Moto G Power (2021)
The OEM Unlock is greyed out and I cannot get it unlocked. The phone has internet, I had to activate it and get a line, but it still wouldnt unlock.
I think this is the main first step to being able to do anything? Is there ways around it?

Probably not.
Sometimes the allow oem unlock toggle is greyed out for a few days.
For some software channels, there is a delay that starts after connecting the internet.
Also sometimes a factory reset is necessary, then reconnect to internet.
Thanks for the info. I tried the factory reset without any luck. I guess Ill wait a few days and see if it unlocks.
I waited a couple days and OEM unlock toggle worked! I've unlocked the bootloader. Thanks for the help!

Question TracFone unlocking policy

Do they mean network unlocking or bootloader unlock? Has anyone been successful in unlocking their bootloader on this website?
I have this device and it's for cricket and it says not a supported device at the Motorola website. So tho I have the twrp I can't flash it until I unlock my bootloader which I pray someone can get around. That's what you guys do fingers crossed....but until there's a way to unlock my bootloader I have to look at the twrp and root images without being able to use them or root ....someone told me you can flash a different bootloader so I figured someone with the same Motorola G Power 2021 but different carrier can provide you their firmware and images for boot and so on. Plz help thanks again and Merry Xmas to all

You could always download the firmware from other moto builds and variants on the lolinet site. The problem is you will most likely brick your device attempting to flash, if you're even able to, or using RSA to trick it into recovering a build not designed for your phone. I'm not experienced with Cricket devices, but I'm assuming since they are based on ATT network that they are not eligible for bootloader unlocking. Though that's a huge guess on my part since that normally is up to the carrier and both ATT and Verizon find much of their purpose executing their right to do so to their hearts content.

No, it's fine here. There are a bunch of threads regarding bl unlock with a Verizon branded device going all the way back to the P3. But I am curious too since temp root was always something that was thought to be the key to unlocking the OEM switch and unlocking. But I don't think it will work from the few posts I've seen. I'm not sure but I think you can get the switch to show active but it doesn't change the function of it or allow it to bl unlock in fastboot. Perhaps I missed the discussion and maybe I should search for it, right? lol I don't have much interest since I will never buy a Verizon device that can't be unlocked but I still am curious.
I see that you cross posted your request to this thread. We should continue it here... and close this thread. No point now.
Verizon Pixel 6 Pro Bootloader Unlock?
Its been a very long time since i have done any of this stuff. I bought the verizon version and cannot get bootloader unlocked. I have searched and see there has been the same problem in the past models. Is there a bypass or workaround? I can...
forum.xda-developers.com
Temp rooot is usually the first step to bootloader unlocking from how I remember it.
However, an exploit or app or something else will still be needed to unlock the bootloader.
A good example would be Sunshine exploit for HTC/Verizon HTC devices. Verizon was always much more difficult because HTC allowed for bootloader unlocking, but Sunshine took it further with a full unlock with "S-OFF" which stands for Security Off (the phone comes S-ON).
So since Verizon made HTC block us from unlocking bootloader/root. Getting temp-root was essential to the unlock/S-OFF.

Given the OP's post is nearly a year old and they have never replied, it's a pretty good bet he wasn't able to unlock his bootloader. Now, I'm sorry if in your original thread wherein you asked about this for your device you didn't like the answer you were given, but the fact remains that the Pixel 6 / 6 Pro devices on Verizon are very tightly locked down.
Verizon devices are always going to be locked down than my ability to get a partner unless by an exploit.
