Best place to buy PC parts? - PC part sales

What do you guys use?
I usually compare Amazon and NewEgg and just go with whichever has the better price.
Also, anyone remember CompUSA before it went out of business?

CompUSA was nice, back in the early days

ah, so... XDA has a PC tech side now... yes...
anyways, I like to check amazon for free shipping and decent "warehouse" specials
bhphoto for tax free sales to my island, and usually very strict about pricing (they actually do MSRP)
newegg isn't really that good for me for years, they've raised shipping prices tooooo much, and pricing is not really competitive because of that.
ebay for used motherboard for older platforms... (ivy bridge / haswell...) and laptop parts...

I try to use newegg when possible, but It's hard to beat Amazon prime offers. But, my secret weapon is always newegg.com. Check their daily deals as often as possible. All of my best tech deals have been from there.

Use to use Mwave but they died. Mouser Electronics or Digikey for components and various electronic supplies.
Newegg and Amazon but I wish there were more.
Amazon is especially hated...

I agree, I always check Newegg before Amazon. I got my GPU from Microcenter

In india I always prefer MD computers

Easy now!
Things have changed a quite a bit, on Where and When, Personal users can purchase "Parts" (Parts=just about anything, in the Box, Tower, and even Laptops tablets) Dont work in a lab or do it for a living... Lab , might be cool, then again, might not!
Now, it really depends on the scope of the project. IF I am building for someone else, I do my homework and really get to find out IF or When I can get a certain list of parts (Mostly the most newest Intel part, that you just can go to a box store, and walk out with said part, why ? ) then get what I can/need!
OK, now that said, I use Digikey, Newegg Amazon, Microcenter to actually name a few. Have found a few others, but they are in bed with the Major company- (Hint Check out AMD and Intel- they have certain suppliers. This list, has changed, - opens up other places, but if you want the newest, latest xyz part, might be in for a wait)
Never use Best Buy. for Internal Parts, too $$$$ !
Short list is Amazon and Newegg, ...
Hope this can help

Anyone ever try Tiger? https://www.tigerdirect.com/
I use Newegg, avoid Amazon and Doctor Evil.

Me too, probably 15 years ago?

Newegg.com only inside USA, right?
Or they send overseas?

Amazon.

im just gonna go and say amazon will only be PC parts not laptop, and limited. if you want motherboards, specific and usually cheaper deals would be ebay. newegg if you ass is wiped with gold bars and amazon if you want fast shipping and moderate prices. ebay is a very reluctant tool sometines. and if you're not flaking gold bars, and want to find a relatively fast option is to buy a motherboard for an i5, i7, laptop off ebay and just using the hdmi ports, for display and external keybaord and mouse. just an idea i did at rough times.

Does anyone here had gone to computer shows? When I was building my own PC, I used to go to the computer show and checked the parts and bought them. The company that organized the computer shows had decided to stop doing that because of the internet, less people going to the shows. I will have to build a new PC b/c the one I am using is not compatible with Windows 11, and I also need one that can handle more resources for day trading.
.
The OP had mentioned about CompUSA, which brings back memory about the first PC (complete package) that I bought with them. The package cost was $1500.

Both Amazon and NewEgg are amazing. Also, try some Offline Market so that you can easily compare prices.

I would prefer Amazon and BuyKingston. I have been using Hyperx RAM for more than 11 months and it's doing the job pretty well for me. Till now, my PC is running like a beast.

I start with NewEgg for mostly selecting the parts I'll buy, referencing high ratings et cetera and individual reviews. Then I check for those parts on Amazon and also at MicroCenter - which I've been buying things from for almost 40 years starting with floppy disks by mail order way back then. I still get some parts from NewEgg. A year ago when I built my PC, I bought the motherboard, CPU, and some M.2 SSDs locally at MicroCenter because they were the cheapest for the parts I wanted.
I used to use TigerDirect. They've been mostly useless to me in recent years. Some of the last things I had gotten from them 7-8 years ago was a humungous but plastic computer case that after rebate I paid $5 for. I used it up until my build last year, when I bought much higher quality but still even larger desktop cases (one each for my wife and I - my old computer became her new one).
TigerDirect's April fools joke from 2015 was funny:

Amazon Kindle Fire vs Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet

Barnes and Noble just announced their Nook Tablet and it is only 50 dollars more than the Kindle Fire. Personally, I am leaning more towards the Kindle Fire because I get one month of Amazon Prime free, but the Nook tablet has a lot going for it. Specs wise, they are actually pretty similar.

So anyone planning on getting either of these tablets? Maybe both?
all i want to say is: CM9
give these things CM'd stock ICS, and the nook touch will pwn the kindle fire, in every way.
I really like the form factor of the Fire but 8gb of storage? Not ideal if you're traveling and want to load up a few movies. I'd need something with a bit more space for trips (of any length). Not bad for surfing at home though.

Will be interesting to find out if the NT is as easy to root as the original NC. Love my rooted NC, and the fact it is just about bombproof (aka screwing it up by rooting, ROM'ing, etc) makes it a tablet that can continue to grow with each new ROM version.
Love the new specs on the NT as well, so will be watching the dev community closely to see how rooting of it goes. My kids would be happy taking over my NC if I grab a NT

This comparison chart is outdated and should be fixed ASAP.
1. B&N has fooled consumers into their newly NT with 1.2GHz processor, but it's 1.0 GHz in reality.
2. The new NT officially claimed to have 11.5 hrs of reading and 9 hrs of watching video/clip
They might have limited the clock speed to up the battery life on paper.

unless there are unforseen complications, almost guaranteed. for both the Nook Tablet and the Kindle Fire.
Both are amazing devices for their pricepoint.
For novice/non techy users, probably the Fire is better, but it depends on if they want b&n or amazon content.
For advanced/techy rooting users, the Nook tablet is the way to go.
If both devices were side by side, both on, say, CM7, the nook would win because of the hardware.

I would say 95% chance this NT will get ICS update either from B&N or from CM8/9.
The remain question is: will the original NC get CM8/9-ICS or not.
I do hope so.

3. The NT also has a microphone. Small yet effective positive addition...
There's more features in NT that even B&N forgets to mention sometimes:
-- a fully functional mic/sound recorder (I'm not sure is it a double mic like in BB Playbook -- a reference platform for both AK Fire and NT, or a single mic, but it's huge)
-- laminated IPS is supposed to be better than what NC has. Nobody knows what effect in reality this lamination has, even the reviewers who put NT and NC side by side for their Photo session.
As for chances of CM7, then CM9 to be build for NT, these are good. There was even a chance of verygreen's size-agnostic SD card booting CM7 right there, at the presentation.

I can sideload my epub library to the Nook without an issue. I cannot inject anything into the Kindle Fire, I have to buy it from Amazon.
There is also the 'hidden' cost of Amazon Prime. Each device has to have a person with an Amazon Prime account. If you don't already have such an account, that is an additional $80/year after any free incentives run out, versus the Nook Tablet which never has any maintenance fees, ever.
For those two reasons alone, I'm staying with the Nook. The hardware (probably faster speed, more RAM, more storage, expansion slot that 99.9% likely is the primary boot device, microphone) seals the deal.

I have a Kindle and I "inject" converted mobi books from ePub through Calibre just fine
Amazon Prime is NOT required to own a Kindle Fire. Without Prime benefits, you can use the device for its intended purposes, just fine. If you are going to root with a custom ROM, none of those would matter, though. For people who are going to run other ROMs on KF or NT, the decision will be at the "hardware" level, instead of comparing the ecosystem of Amazon to B&N.
Thinking it over some, I will recommend the Kindle Fire and associated Amazon Ecosystem to my friends that come to me for computer buying/repair advice.
Personally the Amazon stock GUI is much better than the B&N stock GUI.
Amazon did a great job at pulling off a user friendly device.
As a person who likes to be in control of my technology, I will pick up a Nook Tablet. If it turns out that it is wide open like the NC, I will be an early adopter of the NT.
They have the same SoC, at least superficially identical screens, and very similar size/weight. From my perspective, assuming comparable levels of developer support--something that remains to be seen, really--the question is whether it's worth $50 for more storage, more RAM, and a microSD slot.
Complaining about being "locked in" to either system strikes me as unworthy of these forums. Amazon already said they'll allow sideloading, and even if B&N doesn't at the start, it should be easy enough to root your Nook and set it up. Both run gingerbread, so if you don't want to use Amazon's or B&N's ecosystem, then there are plenty of alternative apps available. Or better yet, install CM9 when it's ready and dump the entire pre-installed experience.
In terms of stock interface, Amazon definitely looks more slick, and Silk is a great idea. Amazon also offers streaming music and movies, as well as cloud services, while B&N is reliant on partner support for anything besides books. While third party support is an advantage in some cases, such as ability to borrow stuff from your local library, my gut feeling is that the majority of people who buy these things don't really use features that aren't readily accessible from the default interface.

Where have you gotten the completely false info about the KF?
I own the nook color with CM7 and love it..
That said
1> Kindle fire will outsell Nook Tablet due to the price difference.. 90% of the consumers wont care about the add ons on the nook Tablets..
2> BN will be forced to drop the price after 3 months to match KF..
Hopefully BN makes money on the reduced price to keep the competition in the space alive..
Personally i like the microphone in the nook which was a key feature for me.. because i can run skype while on vacation..
I am going to go for the nook touch over the kindle fire for the microphone.. HTC Flyer might see a price drop so that might be on the list too..
Like others have said, if you don't want to think about it, buy an apple- (insert gadget name) but if you want choices then go with Android.
Amazon is sort of going the way of Apple by making certain decisions for us wee little consumers. They create and simplify their own ecosystem and it looks appealing to non-techies.
If I can draw a metaphor:
Apple has a yard full of the coolest toys that you cannot take home, fenced in with razor wire.
Amazon has a friendlier yard with cool toys too but you can't help but miss some of your favorite ones, ie the Android market.
B&N has a fenced in yard that they don't seem to enforce and for people who like wide open spaces without too many rules, it's great. They had better work on their website and access to apps to stay competitive though.
You just have to figure out whose yard you want to play in.
I hate overpaying at B&N so I hope they work something out to continue to be a viable competitor.

Keep Prime or wait to see what's available at CES

Hi,
Now that many of you have received the Prime I was wondering, now that the excitement has worn off (or has it?) is the tablet what your thought it would be?
I own the original transformer and have my Amazon order for a 64gig tablet arriving mid January (or later) . Maybe I should cancel my order and wait to see what's announced at the Consumser Electronic Show. I've been reading about a new Lenovo tablet that should have higher resolution than the Prime and may be clocked slightly higher. I know the Lenovo tablet is speculation but it does suggest that there might be some more advanced tablets just around the corner .... and hell I've waited this long.
Thanks,
MD
keep the pre order and wait to swe what is announced at ces. the lenovo tablet will hopefully be announced and i know htc has a tablet in the works and i believe samsung might have their next galaxy tab announcement as well.
There is always something better around the corner. If you keep waiting for the next best thing you will wait forever.
Really, it's the dock that makes the Transformer (and Prime) of interest to me. Without it, I'd probably not be nearly as likely to get a tablet at all. I know there are Bluetooth keyboards available, but it's the fact that the TF/Prime+dock is an integrated unit (and can comfortably be used as such, no secure, flat surface required) gives me enough functionality that I can justify the cost for the tablet.
So, I don't really have any interest in other tablets.
Lenovo and HTC Tegra3 tablets have already been announced, dunno if they'll be cheaper or have better specs, or when they'll be released.
Until I have the dock I can't form a complete opinion, however it is easily the best tablet I have ever used in terms of performance, quality screen and features. Plus it is just as slick looking as the ipad2. I am an owner of a TF1 as well, which I still use since the dock is important to me. The dock is definitely what makes this tablet unique with the double battery life and excellent keyboard setup, so if the dock is not important surely in 2 months Lenovo or Acer will have something higher spec, but will it be updated and supported as well as Asus? I doubt that very much.
The only one I would wait for would be is the Lenova, supposeably it's coming with 2 gb of Ram, but that's the only boost over the prime, but then again you loose the cabability of having a keyboard dock that adds battery life.
They're always gonna come out with something better specs wise. But until that product is actually released youre never going to know if its really better or worth the wait...again. I say get Prime now and sell it later if you like something else. I know thats what I'll be doing.
Since the Prime won't come out untill 6th of January in Holland I will wait untill the CES. Asus has delayed the release for so long I don't mind waiting a few days to see if there are going to come much better devices for the same price..
I'm not really sure how any CES tablet would be substantially better. Especially once the TF201 gets ICS I think it'll be a winner for some time to come. I have no plans to get rid of mine.

More RAM, higher resolution screens, AMOLED screen's perhaps..
@Above, in the future this won't be useless.
Hmm, Samsung's rumored Exynos tablet will be interesting...
2.0 ghz dual-core processor (32nm processor), stereoscopic 3D displays and resolutions of up to 2560-by-1600, and retina display... oh, and supposedly 11 in.
I'm thinking about alternatives a little differently, from a cost perspective. Funds are short.
I'm without a tablet atm; miss the Acer tablet I returned for comfortable media consumption. Backordered the TP at BB, and keyboard would come later, if ever.
If I choose to delay the tablet, I'll likely upgrade my OG Droid with Galaxy Nexus, and wait till money is available again.
Either that, or look into a refurb'd Color Nook with CM9 on it, pass it to the kid if something better comes along for me.
If you're tight on cash and want to skip the TP, you should look at a Galaxy Tab 7" GSM or WiFI only refurb or just plain used on Craigslist, they're going cheap. It's a MUCH better device than the NC (I own both) and at the current price points you can find it at, a better overall value now too.

The Lenovo tablet enters production next month. Acer was trying to make X-Mas and missed so January or February is pretty likely. HTC uses Qualcomm chips and the newer Snapdragon's won't be available until mid year so they're a long shot. The Samsung tablet's a mystery - some online rags are saying February but that seems a little ambitious.

Both the Lenovo and Acer tablets are supposed to have more RAM (2GB) and higher res displays (1900x1200) then the Prime. They're Teg3 too and clocked at 1.6GHz. I'd guess that's going to become the new high-end standard. Thin and light is expected now so I'd assume the form factors will be similar to the Prime and Toshiba Excite (the thinnest, lightest tablet). They're both supposed to launch with ICS also. When all is said and done, the Prime's biggest differentiator is going to be its keyboard dock. Just like the dual-cores, all Teg3's will perform similarly. I'd expect the Acer and Lenovo to be announced in almost production-ready form at CES on January 11th.

More DRAM is always a benefit. Per Anandtech's review one of the issues he ran into was trying to edit a document, switching between apps and sometimes the memory management closing the editor on him resulting in lost work and there's no auto save.
I figure with all the delays with TP I might as well see what's coming out for the new year. I'm liking Lenovo's better specs (1.6GHz and 2GB DRAM) and also Samsung's 2GHz Exynos (prefer faster dual-core than slower quad-core).
As it was suggested I'll hold on to my pre order from Amazon and ride it out a bit but I think I'll end up cancelling it. I do own the Transformer dock and have never really used it. Virtually brand new. In the end I feel having a keyboard defeats the purpose of have a portable device.
I do have a first gen Transformer and a Samsung 7.0 plus, so I'm more than covered. If I do change my mind I can purchase a Prime from a retail location.

I wouldn't want a Acer tablet, their stuff just isn't good quality most of the time, but perhaps they surprise us with their tablet..
Samsung however, is something I'm very interested in, they seem to have the same quality as Asus with their Tab 10.1 (and others).

where's the love

I thought this device would take off. Seems to sell a lot on play store. Where are all the developers? Where are the accessories and brand name cases. Etc? I like mine and haven't had problems. Can anyone explain?
I think the device is starting to move more. Hopefully more accessories will follow. I would love an Otterbox............

Limited distribution primarily. It's impacted the N7 based on holiday sales. Asus said they were shipping 1MM N7's a month in Q3. In Q4 they sold a total of 3.1MM tablets including the N7, TF300, and TF700. So even with the holiday selling period you can assume the N7 dropped off from the 1MM a month shipping rate. That or Asus only sold 100K TF300/700's. Samsung shipped 7.99MM tablets in Q4 (unlike Asus, they don't count Google devices in their sales counts) and the G-Tab 2 7" and 10" saw huge growth in YOY sales; primarily because of price reductions and Samsung's massive distribution network. The Kindle Fire was the best selling non-Apple tablet in Q4. Amazon has a huge distribution network too and is a household name. Google is is a household name but for search not h/w.
The other component to weak Nexus sales is lack of features. We on XDA care about Teg3 and Exynos 5, the masses care about things like an IR port to control their TV's from their tablets and free content for being an Amazon Prime member. Nexus devices are great for Android enthusiasts but kind of barren compared to other tablets. That would explain why Amazon sold 6MM Kindle Fire's compared to the less than 3MM N7's Asus sold when they are both the same price.
Also, high-end Android tablets that bump up against iPad pricing have never sold well. Samsung was selling 1MM Note's a month in Q3 but primarily because S Pen differentiated it. At $499 with 32GB of storage the N10 is no bargain when it's singular differentiating feature is its display. Add limited distribution to the picture and I'd be surprised if Google's even broken 1MM in N10 sales yet. The G-Tab 3 Plus is supposed to be Samsung's version of the N10. It'll be interesting to see how well it sells at the same price based on the additional Samsung features and breadth of their distribution network.
This is what sold over the holidays and you'll notice the N7 is fourth behind the KF and two G-Tab 2's. I keep mentioning the N7 primarily because if a Nexus tablet was going to sell well the N7 at $199 would be it. If the N7's lagging, the prospects for the N10 being a tremendous seller at $399+ are poor.

Barry: some good info there. Could have done without the Samsung biased speculation though. Do you seriously think a load of gtab's were sold because of the ir blaster? they sold because they had huge price cuts/rebates. I myself brought my Mrs a gtab 7 because it was rebated to about £105.
I don't think that many N10's have even been made. In the UK at least, they sold out weeks before Xmas on the play store. Its only in the last few weeks you've been able to buy one with a 3-5 day delivery time.
As for the N7, seems to have sold well as far as I can tell. Again, the 3G version totally sold out over Xmas and even the 32gb was on a several week delivery time. Ditto N4.
Truth is, I don't think Google ever intended to sell too many nexus products. They make naff all on them, and they aren't even made by googles manufacturer! Seeding the market, and building a brand seem the main objectives as far as I can tell.
I don't buy Nexus devices for XDA support, I buy Google devices for priority Google support..
Also to the OP. Non-Google device forums are usually always busier than Nexus device forums because most of those developers are racing to do the best job of reverse developing the devices stock ROM to something resembling AOSP. Where as with Nexus devices all that reverse engineering isn't needed.
There are plenty of ROMs here,a and plenty of kernels..
The user experience lately on Nexus devices has increased a lot - JBQ mentioned the nexus 10 is the most open-source a device has ever been...
As such, there's actually less need to get hacking, as Google has started to make AOSP a lot more "aligned" with the features people wanted from custom ROMs (which makes sense).
I'd reckon a lot of people are using their N10 on stock with root, perfectly happily, tbh.

We'll never know for sure what role features play in people's decision making. Your speculation that they don't matter is no more informed then my speculation they do.
I'll offer some anecdotal evidence that features matter. The KF sold 26% more units YOY over the holidays when last year it had no real competition at the price point. And it's running a limited and forked version of Android that ties people to Amazon for content. The Galaxy Nexus was available at the same subsidized prices via quite a few major carriers as the SGS2/3 and Sensation/One X yet sold only 750K units compared to tens of millions of non-Nexus devices that they were on the display floor (or web) sitting next to.
While Google doesn't spend as much on advertising as Samsung and Amazon anyone who searches on "best tablets" or "best smartphones" would see comparisons that all rate the current Nexus devices very highly. So it isn't as if people buying other phones and tablets didn't know they existed. The 16GB G-Tab 2 was $229 for the 7" and $349 for the 10" (only $50 less than the Exynos 5/2560x1600/2GB RAM N10) over the holidays both with inferior processors and displays compared to the N7 and N10. Why do you (or others) think they outsold "better" featured and reviewed Nexus competitors? At least we agree that distribution and name recognition play an important role so maybe the answer is there's value in walking in to a store and picking one up off the shelf. But globally I'd imagine picking up a KF off the shelf isn't much easier than a N7.

Agreed. The botched availability of the N4 whose launch pissed off more people than it pleased is testament. But that brings us back to OP's original question about the N10 taking off. With limited distribution and a $399/499 price tag it'll most likely sell in smaller quantities over its lifespan than more available competitive products rendering it a niche device. But if the G-Tab 3 Plus ends up selling well with the same h/w and same price as the N10 would you credit that 100% to it being more available? Just curious.
My guess is because it doesn't have a normal distribution. I know Staples and Walmart have them in the states but not in Canada. If they had them in Bestbuys and Futureshop then we would see more accessories.
If I am correct, the Galaxy Tab 3 plus should sell at a decent pace.

Agreed.
Even at Staples, you can only get the 32GB version. That eliminates all the potential customers that are looking for a cheaper alternative to the iPad, since the 32GB is the same price as the entry level iPad.
I think Google's master plan with the Nexus line was to get developers into the play store and also to get companies to make accessories...Not sure how they are doing on the accessories front but I think its pretty deplorable that a samsung/google hasn't released an official pogo charger yet especially given the poor charging that happens with the stock charger. I keep hoping it will come out but I'm starting to think it is about to be too late for them to make an official one -- have to rely on third party vendors for it

To Buy or Not To Buy it.

I've been hoping for two years already that my Note 10+ will, some day, serve as “trade-in” phone for a worthy, future upgrade. Since then I saw two unimpressive 'flagships' S20s and N20s came and went and now I'm looking with disappointment at the next rendition, the S21 models. Both, the S21 and S21+ are basically a stripped down S20 and S20+ phones with lower screen resolution, less RAM and no external SD. I feel like my Note 10+ built two years ago, is way more advanced phone than those brand new S20 and S21+. It's Samsung's conscious intention to steer everyone toward buying the top S21Ultra.
Well, I'm thinking about it, got excited once about that camera zoom on S20 Ultra, haven't bought it when I realized that the zoom quality was overhyped, now they say it's “greatly improved”. I'll be watching the release show, will see.
I have the 10+ and after little more then a year see nothing in the Samsung line up I like.
Part of that is Q's fault, another failed OS release and no faith 11 will be much better.
My 10+ runs fast, is rock solid stable, looks great and packs close to 1 tb of storage.
I refuse to buy a phone with no SD card slot as it serves as my data drive.
So I'm just sitting on a fence...

It's sad to see Samsung lowering their standards that much. People who are planning to buy S21 and S21+ will be comparing the specs to S20 and S20+ and right now they can buy S20 or 20+ for $600 less, still having 50% more of RAM(12GB v 8), SD card extension and better screen resolution. Unbelievable. People who never had a Samsung phone and for some reason are disappointed with their iPhones, Pixels or OnePlus devices will buy it just for a change and they are accustomed to missing SD card slot. But that's a small market share, Samsung is moving backwards.
My daily phone is now Pixel 4a5G, great phone, reliable, I really like it and I paid for it $420 after some Amazon discounts so it's about a ½ price for pretty much the same experience that the S21 would provide.
I was very excited for the new 2021 "flagship" and after seeing all the leaks I don't even know how to feel. I mean, what is going to be Samsung's excuse to bring a stripped down model this year?
Very disappointed.
Well, I bought the ultra as the only option to be slightly excited about. Watched the presentations, pretty much samo-samo as the previous ones, but I decided to recycle my N10+ and one of my cc has almost $300 in points so the whole purchase won't be that painful. Funny thing I've noticed, is that they totally omitted the fingerprint, that means the S21 series will have the same sensor as S10-N20 again, otherwise they would make out of it one of the main points in this presentation.
So, there is 'one carrot' - seemingly lower price for those S21 models and than a lot of 'sticks' like, no SD slot or chargers.
Still, am looking forward to put my hands on that new camera phone.

I'm sticking with the 10+ that's still running on Pie. No SD card means no sale... I demand to have a data drive.
Samsung still hasn't upgraded their bt chipset hardware to include AptX-HD... I call foul, again. Lame.
I'm stuck on the 10+ Pie for the foreseeable future unless Samsung and Android get their sorry acts together. Q and up scoped storage and lack of overlay support just plain sucks.
No way Sammy can bribe me to trade in my 10+ that's in near perfect condition and is running fast, stable, with close to 1 tb of storage on it.
You'll love the Buds+, the best bt Buds set for this phone. With Poweramp's EQ you can dial them in pretty good.
There are -still- issues with the Bud's firmware. Occasionally I need to reset them as nothing else seems to cure them when their sound goes wanky. Reboot, clearing caches and cursing does nothing. It may happen when they switch codecs... not sure what the trigger is. Could be a 3rd party apk or game that goofs them up?
Be nice if Samsung would get it spot on... for once so we didn't have to do their job and try to play in their muck!
I got the Ultra too. While I was dissapointed that they ended up removing the SD card, it really is not that unusual these days for phones to have onboard storage only - no SD Card. The options to have from 128 to 512 GB adds quite a bit of additional storage and for me, will be more than enough. I will miss the SD card a little - but I will get used to it. (my wife uses my Pixel 5 and sometimes we switch and I use it. Not really a big deal to go without that SD card....)
I wonder if mzsquared Is right about the Fingerprint sensor? I know they didn't talk about it at all, but I hope that Samsung will surprise us when we get the phones.....
I was looking to upgrade which I have done after every new release since the S6. As prerelease rumors were confirmed I am no longer looking at the S21 as an upgrade. What made Galaxy devices unique was not following iPhone's "Advances". Now Samsung has eliminated the 3.5 Jack, MicroSD, 1440 Screen Resolution, Eaphones or Buds, Immersive Display, Back Panel Glass and the Charger.
For me the biggest setback is no MicroSD. Sorry, I have no faith in Cloud Security and my current MicroSD already has more data than the S21's highest capacity device. As a musician and serious audiophile no bluetooth connection will preform as accurately or sound as definitive as a wired connection, it's just not happening! Not to mention the hassle of changing wireless buds. I couldn't care less about S Pen functionality, even if it was included with the device. Some of these are personal preferences but based on initial responses it's obvious there's widespread disappointment in Samsung's new direction.
The only features worth having are a more efficient SoC, some photo or video processing and the 120Hz refresh rate. I'm not opposed to spending top dollar for a worthy smartphone but the S21 has eliminated many features which are truly valuable. For now I'll stick with my S10 Plus, IMHO it's still the best Galaxy device currently available. The S20's worldwide sales dropped 35% when compared to the S10, this latest offering has no hope for reversing this decline.
Fingerprint Sensor has been improved!
I know we have to take information we get from Samsung Support with a grain of salt, I am hoping they were right when I asked about whether Samsung had improved the Fingerprint Sensor on the new S21 Ultra.
Customer Support told me:
"The in-screen fingerprint sensor in Samsung's Galaxy S21 is easier to use than ever. it has the second generation of its 3D Sonic Sensor that's faster and bigger, making it easier for people to to unlock their devices using their fingerprints."
Hopefully, he was right - we will find out in a couple of weeks...

The problem with the SD card is people don't utilize it to it's full potential by making it the dedicated data drive. I did this too for years until I realized I could use exactly like I used data drives for years on my PC rigs.
Downloads stay on internal memory until they can be vetted malware free. A small security buffer but one that has already saved my data on the 10+ from a tainted jpeg with embedded script as well as a trojan preloader.
Up to 1 tb is supported... I could use 3 tb but it's irrelevant for now as even 1 tb cards are prohibitively expensive. A .5 tb V30 Lexar can be had for reasonable $75.
What I like to see is dual SD card support; you can never have too much fast storage.
Over a decade ago my PC with packing 2 tb of data drive storage. Even my E6400 laptop now has a 2 tb data drive with a 7200 rpm 1 tb OS drive. Hell yeah.
I'm wondering if the mobo chipset Samsung chose even supports an sd card?
Either way Samsung wants to skimp and still charge big bucks... No!

Yup I usually without fail switch back n forth from the s line to the note line to have the latest and greatest but the fact that stupid samsung decided to kill micro SD support on all 3 models is absolutely ridiculous so I will be skipping the S21 Ultra and hoping Samsung can pull there head out of their asses and at least keep micro SD support for the next Note model cause without it I have no use for it,I have a 512 gb. Internal storage Note 20 ultra with 1tb.micro SD card so Samsung either step your game up or prepare to be disappointed.
on samsung dot com, it said Esim supported.
it listed Ultrasonic Fingerprint: 7.5x8.25mm
i dont know the size of previous galaxy.
I've ordered the 256GB S10 Ultra as an upgrade from the S10 5G, which also has 256GB internal storage with no memory card slot.
I've ran all my old Samsung phones at 1080p rgardless of maximum resolution, and I gave up using SD cards several years ago. From my perspective, the eSIM support, camera upgrades, larger battery newer hardware and software makes it a worthy upgrade. I returned the Exynos Note 20 Ultra because the battery live was unbearably poor, so I'm hoping for an improvement in that area.
I ordered the Ultra as a replacement for my Note 10+ too.

That was a wrong guess on my part fortunately. In the presentation, they spent so much time talking about a 'heroic efforts" to get that specific 'phantom black' on the back of the Ultra phone that I thought they must have exhausted all available R&D brain power working on it and the fp sensor was postponed again to next year. They never mentioned it.

The Buds link up seamlessly with a Samsung if bt is active. That and range are not issues.
They never fall out... for calls I don't even put them all the way in and they still stay in place.

When is the best time to buy computer parts?

Getting the right set of computer parts, whether for a brand new PC build or an upgrade, involves a good amount of research and most importantly, patience. It is wise to purchase individual PC parts over a period of time which can help you save some money. But as I mentioned, this requires a lot of patience especially if you have been planning to build a new PC for some time.
If I am being honest, there is never a good time to buy computer parts. You might get a new monitor today, but in a few years or even months, it will be replaced by a new model that will be brighter, sharper, have a higher resolution, or even a faster refresh rate.
Yearly sales
One can anticipate a potential drop in price during recurring yearly sales. Amazon hosts multiple sales throughout the year with the biggest one being Prime Day that is usually hosted in the month of June. Similarly, Newegg is also a good place to buy PC parts at discounted rates during their Supreme Tech, and clearance sales. Additionally, Newegg also has Shell Shocker exclusive deals where prices change every day on different types of products. There are also smaller sales on occasions like Valentine's Day, Labor Day, and of course right before the holiday season.
Black Friday and Cyber Monday are your best bet if you are looking for the best deals on PC parts. These are the biggest electronic sales where you can expect discounts, deals and price drops on a large range of hardware, peripherals, and other small PC parts. Retailers and sellers often host pre-Black Friday sales for long periods and those are not to be missed.
Having said that, don’t expect price drops on every single component. A lot depends on what you want to buy especially if you are seeking a particular model or a brand. There is a good chance that some component is not even included in the sale or the discounted price is not marginally better than the original cost.
Amazon Prime Day - June 21-22, 2021

Generational upgrades
This can be very tricky for the layman. However, if you are a PC enthusiast you can potentially capitalize when a newer generation of product is released. For instance, the introduction of Intel’s new 11th-gen CPUs has led to a small drop in the price of the outgoing 10th-gen CPUs. So yeah, it is s good time to get your hands on Intel’s Comet Lake processors.
The most obvious thing to note here is that you are not getting the latest piece of hardware, potentially missing out on a new feature or two. But if you don’t mind using hardware that is only one generation old, then this is a good way to save some money.
This isn’t always the case though, as it was evident when NVIDIA introduced its new GeForce RTX 3000-series last year. The entire GPU market has fluctuated with older generation parts selling at a premium, almost double the cost of their original retail price.
Price trackers
A good way to stay updated with the changes in the pricing of PC parts is by visiting PCPartPicker if you live in the US and PriceSpy if you live in the UK. These websites offer a breakdown of prices for a particular product from a list of vendors. This helps in comparing components, especially older generation models where you can end up saving a significant amount.
There are various external factors that can affect the price of PC parts. The most recent one is the ongoing chipset crisis along with crypto mining that has lead to an increase in the prices of graphics cards all over the world. Today, getting a new graphics card has become next to impossible, let alone getting one at retail price.
With this general chip storage and mining requirements (RTX and hard drive), I would be glad to buy a piece of hardware at MSRP... Not many deals these days...
The best time to buy computer parts? When you can afford them.
There's a bad time?
Haha
After building many PC's over the years starting in the early '90's there is never a good time to buy PC parts. Every last one of them become obsolete before you drive home and start building. This is why I retired from build PC's as I was always in the hunt for the latest and greatest. I have a stack of MB, graphic cards, HDD's, sound cards etc. You can never keep up. The best advice I can give is to buy the most forward looking motherboard and hopefully you'll get a few years out of it.
The best time to buy anything is when you need it, or, when it's in season.
When it's in stock and on sale.
Depends You Planning To LULZ
I got lucky when I built my Mecha-Godzilla PC a year ago, especially for the video card. Turns out I didn't really need one after all but I thought I did at the time, and I feel lucky for paying less than $200 for an nVidia 1650 (overclocked). So video cards were already expensive but they jumped up even more right after that

Just a small note for Canadian aligned part seekers, in relation to pcpartpicker.com - specify ca.pcpartpicker.com or you will at some point forget to make the adjustment and start getting all excited and giddy with the amazing prices that are happening at a time that does not coincide with cyber monday, black friday or the news that quantum computing just rendered all compy tech that is not included in the quantumyummygoodness effectively.. ineffective, the amazing prices are actually in USD and you didnt realize your cache refreshed or you're using a different browser or device - which you will then at least consider smashing a la "Hulk mad" mode. Yes of course it seems sensible at the time. So does fighting Thor. But its not his fault, its yours. You're welcome for the disaster aversion assistance, and apologies for the shattering of ignorance's "bliss", at least in this regard anyways.

May all your future "rodes" be as bumpy as my life since my current upgrade which started on January 23rd, 2021 and ends at some point in the yet to be determined future, I friggen hope.
Why the glum chum?
Amazon. Amazon is the reason for my bumpiness. Due 3x bad MSI B550 Carbon Wifi motherboards, followed by 2x altogether WRONG Gigabyte Wifi Elite z390 INTEL boards which were supposed to be Gigabyte Aorus Master x570 AMD boards, since I already had a Ryzen 5 3600 cpu waiting, and had also paid for at more than double the cost of the wrongfully delivered board - and this is where the inexplicable and nasty starts - at which point I was told that they would offer no other replacements, my only ootion being that once I returned the 5th board <as if I didn't return the first 4 promptly or notify them when they sent me 2 of the same product and returned the extra insulated water bottle as im an honest.. idiot>, they would send the 2 refunds.
They eventually sent back the refund for the Aorus <I had double paid for the first MSI board, and then upgraded to the Aorus Master with my tax return, so at one point was out $700ish to this mess>, but the initial 285.88 that I paid for the MSI Carbon board in January, which bank account by then had been closed for months, <an account that had been closed 3 months without my knowledge - after the first mb purchase made on Jan 23rd > - and this was now August 16th.
Amazon claims CIBC accepted the refund, CIBC said they didn't recieve it, <and still could not locate the refund with transaction codes given to me to take in to the bank so they could track it down>.
Then Amazon made a promise to rectify the issue within 72 hours after making me wait 15 more business days, after which they said 'too bad, we arent going to do anything'.
Thats not even bringing up the fact that I had explained to them that I had JUST been illegally evicted <after 5 years of residence> by the new landlord who wanted to jack the rent way up, like everywhere else during covid, and that I was living in my car <a Coupe no less> with my cat and dog for 2 months and was out of money. I also had a storage unit full of my things, costing me monthly until I could find another apartment.
So, I've had a brand new Phanteks white case, with aio rgb addressable liquid cooling, a new cpu still in box, new white 850 watt platinum plus ps fully modular, killer addressable rail rgbs, 2 sticks of white Crucial Ballistix RGB 3600mhz cl15 ram, new white grouped cables with rgb combs, m.2 512mb nvme pcie 4, corsair dark core rgb mouse, all gathering dust, until it was stolen while someone "helped" me move. I did talk to a buddy of mine, who is the right guy to know, and got it all back, BUT STILL WITHOUT A MB AMAZON. I started a new job, but by the time I backpay covid debt, and save up, itll be obsolete again. oh and i saved up the parts to build it, and did get to use it for a glorious 2 weeks before MSI Carbon board number 2 took a dump. All 3 had flashback bios issues. I spent days and weeks on them trying to get them going again. Never had bios flashing issues that i couldnt recover before those. Im 43, been building my whole life.
Oh, right, my point.. sorry didnt expect all that despite leaving out all kinds of details - I had to stick with my pair of MSI 970 GTXs 4MB Gaming gpus, selling one along with my old rig to afford the new parts because i couldnt find ANY that were anywhere NEAR affordable.
Hence the bumpy rode wishes, but not really obv just jerking around bro, seriously. Glad you got yours before things went full retard.
1st total upgrade in abour 12 years, after mb mods kept my Asus Crosshair V Formula Z relevant, even now. I have pictures of my gloriously short run, during the two weeks, if anyone is interested pm me. Sorry to detract from thread. All 3 24" Samsung monitors, also collecting that figuratively tear stained dust.
What? Fine. Not ALL figurative tears. Stupid covid. Hulk sad.
When the college/university midterm ends as students sell their desktops looking for laptops.
Right before a new hardware release comes out and there is a large amount of supply
