Does anyone have any experience/recommendations for an Android-based car stereo head unit? My old stereo has just died, so I am interested in what people think of the currently available ones. I have a double din space.

I think I'm leaning towards the Parrot as it's rootable, and the single-din size is more likely to fit whatever car I get after my current one.
Bump for this thread. I just recently thought about getting into one of these units too, my only concern is how "locked down" they would be in terms of getting rid of their default launchers and crap they have. I basically want a way to just have android by itself running on the car - I can get apps for just about everything else. Ideally I want a clone of my phone on the car that would sync with my phone. Or better yet, simply a way to have a "remote display" for my phone. That way, anything I'm doing on the car side of things would be the same on my phone, like a received email, new internet bookmark, or something like that.

I just picked up a "Road Cyberman" from China Jiaho (actually they call it something else, but it's the same as Chinavasion's Road Cyberman, except $100 cheaper).
It's running Gingerbread 2.3.5 and proving difficult to root. No adb on the usb (even with debug option), no google apps (although I found some apks that sort of work) and no adb wireless available.
The devices works fine, but I would like to have a little bit more control over it.
I've tried Gingerbreak and the other get root apks, but no luck so far.

I have been following that company for a while, and they just recently released that video and are taking pre-orders for the new board. My biggest hold up at this point is that I would like to use a single DIN stereo for the "amp" by running the audio from their device into the aux input of my existing stereo. I need to find room to mount both the double DIN screen and a custom spot for the single DIN stereo I already have. I would then have the choice of using the stereo without plugging in the phone if I didn't want to for whatever reason. Alternatively, if I can find a good FM tuner app for my phone and a good customizable dock mode, I could eliminate the stock stereo and just run the inputs into a standard automotive 4 channel amp. This of course means you get nothing for a car stereo unless you connect the phone though, unlike the other plan.
Of course, another thought I had was getting a used double DIN touch screen DVD player and using their interface board to convert it to run the Android screen through it, then run the audio straight into the aux input of the touch screen DVD player. That way you have the ability to use the system "as is" out of the box, OR run the Android device through the screen. I think this is the best option, but it also takes the most money since you have the expense of the used double DIN touch screen unit first. I also wonder about picture quality and touch screen sensitivity with the built in touch screens on those units.
Anyway, just food for thought!

EDIT: One of the other hold ups is the calling. I would like to use an external mic and have audio come through the car speakers, currently using that board you are still calling through the device, thus you would need a Bluetooth headset from my understanding. I would like to avoid that if possible also. This is another good reason to go with the double DIN stereo since some of those support Bluetooth calling already and you could probably make/receive calls that way completely hands free.
EDIT #2: If you were into car monitoring and such also, you could easily get a bluetooth OBD interface and run the software on the phone (such as torque) so you could display live data from your car on your dash also. Something like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ay-ZvTn3fLo&t=45s

This may be such an unusual use case that it hasn't been an issue for anyone other than me, but here's to hoping for a solution...
I've just bought a new car (2015 Honda Fit) which has a decent size LCD panel in the dash (but I opted not to get the expensive navigation system) and which also has full bluetooth integration and, surprisingly, an HDMI port for the screen. HDMI is one of the "source" settings, and Bluetooth is a separate one.
I've paired my Nexus 5 to the car in order to take and make phone calls and get the other integration features such as music and podcast playback over the car's audio. I had this idea that if I were to run the Nexus 5 through the large screen using HDMI (via a Slimport adapter), I can have a much nicer Google Maps based navigation system that would give something close enough to the experience of the in-dash nav system minus the touchscreen -- which is fine, as I can set the route, put the phone in a cupholder, and not bother with it again.
Now, here's the fatal snag. While the phone is paired to bluetooth, it insists on sending 100% of its audio through Bluetooth and doesn't send it through HDMI. The car is either-or on the sources. If it's on HDMI, it only plays back HDMI. The screen displays exactly as I hoped -- but no audio at all (again, it's going to Bluetooth). Now, I can switch over to Bluetooth and hear the sound but not get the display. I could kill the pairing to get both through HDMI, but now I lose the ability to receive calls over bluetooth with the handy steering wheel call answering and all of the amenities associated with that.
I'm wondering if there is some kind of workaround -- Android configuration that I've somehow never noticed, or a third party app -- which will allow the Nexus 5 to remain paired and actively Bluetooth connected while still sending audio through the HDMI port (Slimport). I don't see that this would as likely be a car-side solution.
The Nexus 5 is rooted stock 4.3.3.

I can't help ith your situation, but I'm wondering if you can help with mine. I also just bought the 2015 Honda Fit. What I want to be able to do is mirror my Galaxy S4 to the screen for navigation purposes. But from what I understand, it will only work in Park. I don't have the cable yet and did't want to buy it unless I knew it would work.
For a quick test, I plugged a roku stick in the HDMI port. As expected, it worked fine until I put the car in gear. Then the display gets disabled. Does this happen with phone mirroring? Would I be able to actually use google maps and see it while in motion or will the screen shut off? What does and doesnt work with mirroring?

This behavior of the HDMI port / display actually became a far bigger problem than how to route the sound. I had been doing all of my testing with the car sitting in the garage, and because I wasn't ever able to get the sound to do what I needed, I didn't bother to go drive around with HDMI display enabled. I confirmed through this and consulting the manual that for "safety reasons" they have entirely disabled the HDMI input while the car is not in park. Unfortunately, I'd guess this is coded in the system's firmware which most of us aren't going to have a way to tamper with, so this is a fatal problem for what we're both looking to do. I was confident that there was probably some sort of solution to making audio go over both channels, but that's irrelevant in light of this problem.
So to summarize, I'll suggest not bothering with the Slimport (or the other kind of interface, if that's what your phone uses) because it will certainly be utterly useless for this and I don't foresee a solution. It looks like this thread is therefore dead. Thank you for bringing this to my attention, though -- I'd have continued working toward an audio solution and then discovered this bigger problem once I solved that one. You just saved me from wasting a lot of time.

One more thought (stating the obvious, I suppose) -- We've been hamstrung by the assumption that everyone is going to be using the display to watch movies while driving, even though we have excellent reasons which would actually make it safer (an easier to see navigation display). I guess Honda is mitigating lawsuits from the would-be idiots who might actually be watching American Idol episodes while driving to work.
I purchased my head unit last year from a reputable ebay store and installed it in a 2004 Toyota Sienna XLE mini van. I am an experienced car stereo installer with more than 25 years in business. I previously had a Clarion touch screen unit with NAV in this vehicle, but it was extremely slow to respond and I wanted something that would work as quickly as my Samsung tablet. After searching the internet and much research on youtube of end-users of this head-unit, I decided to purchase and install the TH8681GA unit. Initially I was very enthused about the functionality and response time of the product. I even encouraged my brother-in-law to purchase one for his Subaru. After only 3 months of use, the screen began to fade out, giving me a washed out look with a burned in radio screen permanently etched in the view at certain angles. The Basarsoft-IGO NAV system is very good, but it does not hold the memory of my selections for setup; language etc. The other memory functions in the radio remain set, so I know that the problem is not in the constant power 12V supply wire. Now the radio tuner intermittently decides to scan forward until it comes back to the station that I was listening to. Is there anything that can be done with this radio? I was hoping for durability with this product and at the price, a value that would allow me to install it for my customers. Disappointing

I would need some advice on turning TF201 to a car infotainment system. I'm running Katkiss's Stable rom with stock kernel (i believe). I like the multi-window option, that's when i decided it would be great for my car.
Any suggestions are always welcome!
I'm running premium version of Automate ( which i like the most on my Nexus 6P) but wouldn't support offline maps.
Then, I've downloaded Here Maps, I have difficulties in updating the location (could be GPS location problem) i have tried almost all navigation apps and none updated the location. Screenshot Below.
I do have an Asus GPS dongle, tried plugging that in and no luck (May be as i'm on a custom rom).
I would be glad if any of you have any ideas to speed up my (TF201) and my project as well.

I've actually been thinking of the same thing since I resurrected my Prime a few days ago. There are just two problems I have. First is my car stereo doesn't have and AUX input of any kind that I know about. If I'm going to do this I'm going to have to break into it and figure out a way to get into the low side of the output amps (or some other way) and tap in there. GPS is horrible even with the dongle and if using the dongle on a long trip you can't charge it. I have two dongles (thanks for your screw-up Asus) and was thinking of taking one apart and trying to install a charging cable that would work when the dongle is plugged in. Then I remembered that I have an old BT GPS receiver that I used in my PDA days so that solves problem #2.
Keep working on it and let me know some of your ideas/solutions and I'll do the same if I start this project.

I just can't find an FM BT transmitter that I like. I guess I'm a bit of an audio snob as far as sound quality and the FM transmitter just doesn't cut it for me. I'm an electronics engineer so breaking into my car stereo and making an audio in should take much work.
Torque was what I was going to use it for mostly as well. Still thinking about it. Right now I'm putting a clutch in my '71 Corvette convertible so that's taking up most of my time right now. I'll post stuff as I go.

I'm doing this exact project myself. I'm going to try and get away with running the stock ROM, AutoMate and using my phone as a WiFi hotspot for online navigation and music streaming.
I figure that I'll just use Tasker to make a quick hotspot toggle on my phone's homescreen. I'm toying with the idea of automating the hotspot activation for whenever my phone is plugged in (since I always plug my phone in when I'm driving anyway.) I'm thinking that if I do that and have it only function between the hours of, say, 6:00am and midnight, it'll deactivate automatically for when I forget to do so during my nightly charge.
I just have my tablet velcroed to my dashboard along with a charging cable. It looks just fine! I'm sacrificing the usage of two of my AC vents, but I never really use them anyway.
I'll let you know how it goes!
Update: AutoMate isn't supported on the stock ROM... Time to get to some flashing!
Update 2: The project is finished!
The memory of how my Prime ended up in my possession is a bit of a fuzzy one, and I discovered that for whatever reason I seem to have the German edition. Coupled with the fact that I have no Windows 7 computers to run fastboot with properly, I spent a few too many hours trying to figure out how to load the KatKiss 5.1.1 ROM.
I ended up settling for an easy 4.1.1 jellybean ROM that didn't need any further screwing around with TWRP and bootloader versions. I loaded up AutoMate and found it quite lackluster and somewhat glitchy, but Drivermode works absolute wonders! The WiFi hotspot from my Galaxy Note 3 running Dirty Unicorns 5.1.1 functions beautifully.
Apparently there's ways of transmitting GPS from a phone to a tablet via Bluetooth, but the GPS on my Note has never really worked since I flashed DU anyway so I left that alone. I'm fine with just getting Google's directions manually and having the map with the route open. It's still really handy having the Prime for that.
As far as physically mounting the tablet goes, I really just velcroed it to my dashboard and ran the charging cable plus aux cord beneath the front cover panel to secure them. It holds quite firmly and can be easily removed if I feel like using the tablet for something else. I also think it improves the aesthetics of my ol' 1998 Cherokee. It looks much cleaner than the cheap ugly radio installed behind it xD
Having driven a few hours now with this new setup, I can definitely say that I am very happy with the outcome, especially since my Prime was otherwise just sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Spotify works like a charm with Drivermode and controlling its functions is easier than ever. I have also realized other potentials for having such a large, Internet-connected screen in such a convenient location. It's got some wicked movie-watching potential, for example. Date night with a view, anyone?
That does look good AggieJack. I've put my project on hold for now as I'm pulling the engine on my old Corvette and theat is taking all my free time. I've not abandoned it and hopefully finish it too. For GPS I'm going to use my external Bluetooth GPS receiver I have. It works great ant can lock on to double digit signals.
That looks fantastic.. Again. Katkiss runs fine for me with automate.. It wouldn't pick the GPS. That's where I'm held at.
If I get that going.. I will may have to find a solution to connect the charger inside the stereo cabinet. As I don't like wires lying around.

As the title says, I have sent back my S10 for refund. When I pre ordered I was genuinely looking forward to the phone. My previous phone was a LG G7 which is low key a great device. I also have a Oneplus 6T.
Not gonna lie I really like the S10 size and ergonomics and on the whole it's a great phone but a few things irked me but one issue was the main deal breaker.
1/ in display fingerprint reader is not ready for prime time (firmware updates may improve it over time)
2/ contacts pictures are low res and tiny (again firmware updates may solve it but as my daughters S9 exhibits the same thing, I doubt Samsung are in a hurry to do anything)
3/ infinity display takes hella getting use to, example being ghost touches & screen distortion on the sides
However the deal breaker is Bluetooth connection to my cars infotainment system, specifically the Land Rover Discovery Sport. Basically the phone pairs with the system but almost immediately would continously unpair & pair in a loop. No matter what I do with the settings on the phone it would not keep a constant connection. The only way was to un-tick the phone connection on the cars system so that only media was connected. Whether its a problem with Samsungs implementation of Android 9 Pie causing this or the cars system I don't know.
There is an ongoing thread regarding the S9 having the same issues after the Android 9 pie update on Samsung EU forum affecting specifically the JLR group of vehicles

Shame really as I could adapt & live with the 3 other things but as I spend over an hour everyday commuting in my Land Rover the Bluetooth issue is not acceptable.
My S10 pairs with my Honda bluetooth and Android Auto no issues and remains connected. Maybe a defective unit?
The S10 pairs and works faultlessly with my wife's 2014 Mini Countryman and also my daughter's VW Polo. Also I had it paired and working fine with all our Bluetooth speakers, laptops, etc so I don't think the phone is faulty.
As an aside I tried my daughter's S9 that was updated to Android Pie with my Discovery Sport and it exhibited the same issues as my S10. So there is definitely an incompatibility with Samsung's Android Pie update and the infotainment system of my Discovery. Now which one is at fault I don't know but I'm not expecting either Samsung or Land Rover to be in a hurry to rectify.
Sounds like a unique experience. Coming from an S9, I'm experiencing better Bluetooth connections, smooth experience with the fp sensor and no problem with the curved screen with a case on.

My s10 also does the same thing with my bluetooth in the car. I think my phone is faulty because my wife has the same phone and hers is fine using bluetooth in the car

That's unfortunate. As other's have stated, it may be a faulty unit. I have a 2014 Chevy Sonic and have had no issues using phone and media bluetooth with the stereo. I can definitely understand the disappointment, though, and I'd be weary of possibly getting a replacement with the same issue.
I was initially having some BlueTooth issues with having to repair the phone with my 2014 BMW after re-pairing it for the third time a few weeks ago it has been stable ever since. As far as the ghost touches I completely agree, my Note 9 was not like this and I don't want a case on the phone so I have been using the Edge Touch app from the Good Lock app and have had a decidedly better experience.
As I explained I don't think it was faulty as it connected fine to a couple of different vehicles as well as all my home bluetooth electronics. I'm leaning towards it being more an issue with my Land Rover infotainment system as my daughters Galaxy S9 on Oreo connected fine to it but after she updated to Pie it did exactly the same as my S10.
I've already spoken to Land Rover but will be not holding my breath for any update in the near future.

Since the latest update I've been having problems with both finger print and Bluetooth connection in my car, and it seems Samsung have pulled this update from any further roll out , do there is clearly a problem

I've already sent it back, but I have kept all the cases I bought for it just in case I decide to buy another one at a later date.
Sounds kind of like whiny things to complain about but if you didn't like the phone that was probably your best bet

Same. Since the note 8, all samsung phones (and I have tried them all) have a horrible time with the bluetooth connection on all 3 vehicles in my household (13 BMW X3, 14 Caddy ATS, 14 Chrystler 200) hey google does not work after it registers the first time making hands free driving impossible and the constant disconnects after you use it or just make a call are a joke. Pair that with a camera that is not even close to the pixel 3 and this hot piece of garbage is gone. Boy the hardware is spot on for size and ergonomics, but it just dosen't work.
2016 Jaguar XF. Same exact issue with bluetooth connecting and disconnecting every 10 seconds or so. I plan on messing around in developer settings but not holding my breath for a fix through an update from JLR or Samsung.

I have a Android head unit in my Car on Android Oreo. I keep having issues with the Bluetooth connection from my S10 in which it disconnects and reconnects over and over every 30 seconds. Here are results and a work around I found.
Galaxy S4 connection to Head Unit
First pair: Works fine
Future auto connects: Works fine
Galaxy S9 connection to Head Unit
First pair: Works fine
Future auto connects: Works fine
Galaxy S10 to Head Unit
First pair: Works fine
Future auto connects: disconnects and reconnects over and over every 30 seconds
Galaxy S10 to Head Unit paired using 3rd party app called Force Pair
First pair: Works fine
Future auto connects: Works fine
I tried everything to get this working since my S10 arrived.
S10 is on the latest update
Updated my Car Head Unit to the latest Firmware and Software.
Played with the developer bluetooth settings on the S10.
Tested pairing from the head unit and the phone separately.
Tried factory reset on both phone and head unit.
Tried forgetting all network settings on S10.
Tried disabling media and ringtone volume sync
Disabled Sleeping Apps, adaptive battery etc
Set All apps to not optimised
Tried unlocking the screen.
NON of the above worked. Only using this 3rd Party app Force Pair works, which has to suggest its a bug in the Bluetooth Connection Pairing. I dont even seem to need to keep this app running on my S10, just paired with it and the problem is gone. Samsung support just keeps telling me to take my phone to a repair centre but its not broke, all other bluetooth devices work fine.
If your experiencing any issues like this, its possible this workaround will work for you also
is it one of those "off road" vehicles that people never drive off road? lol

all seriousness however, I'm finding that I'm getting inconsistent connection to my Bluetooth headphones. they just randomly seem to cut out whilst listening to tunes and when I go to replay the tune from where it last stopped, its right at the beginning again.

I have a similar issue as my new SM-G973F cannot connect to a Jabra Elite 25e neck ear plugs or to a Wonderboom speaker (Logitech). My former S8+ connected without problem.
I've tried kdowney's solution to no avail.
It's also a pain for me since I spent almost 2 hours a day commuting to work.
[Edit] It took re setting the hear plugs (+ & multi function for 5") and it works now
