Which Default Apps to Keep - Microsoft Surface Duo Questions & Answers

Hi Everyone:
I just bought one of these. It should get here on Weds. From what I have read, there are a few apps that really take advantage of the dual screens. I have been an android fan from the G1 days, and. like all of you, have my favorite apps., but I am willing to give those up for apps that take advantage of the layout of the machine. So, which should I use?
Thanks.

[Q] A thought: Is Girb or Froyo really enough for tablets?

Hey there i have a general question or a thought that came to me.
While using my tablet to check my email, searched the web play a quick game. never at any point did it look like or even feel that i was using a phone. I have a nexus one and love that too..... anyway. Question is if great devs like , Rothic, Roebeet, and Gojimi can mod O.S's and apps like office HD, and the kick ass launcher fitted for tablets, is Honeycomb, or even waiting for honeycomb for our tabs necessary?
Being that the "phone" versions of android are well developed, if modders and devs can make tablet specific apps pre Honeycomb why wait for Honeycomb? I remember reading that Homeycomb is a version 1 so it would be starting over again why not just stick with and maximize the 2.3.3 or froyo?
Just thinking out loud, but if Homeycomb is a version of Android that makes a tablet "look" like a tablet, with the ability to customize our tablets the way we want them, why not just develop or mod the HELL out of 2.3.3 or even froyo. Its supposed to be "optimized" for tablets but the apps that i use seems to not have an issue with the screen....I've seen great screenshots of peoples home screens and they look awesome... anyway sorry for long post...
Big up to the G tablet devs again.... thanks for making this tab the best bang for my bucks i have ever spent!!!
Is it Necessary? Probably not. As you said, we've got some pretty good toys right now.
However, you wouldn't be on this site if you weren't always seeking (like a bad habit), the latest and greatest... the newest 'eye-candy', etc.
One of the things that no OS/Launcher can completely fix is that many apps were developed with phones in mind, and they just don't scale or fir right on a tablet screen.
While HC won't just up and fix those problems, the increased exposure and focus on tablets will help convince developers to keep both platforms in mind when coding.
Now, let me get back to my latest CM RC7 with Tablet tweaks install while I wait for HC

[Q] Bought the Samsung GTab 10.1 today, have a few questions about it?

Hey guys!
I just ordered the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 (P5100) 10.1" today via Flipkart (Indian Online Mega-Store) and it is expected to arrive in a few days. I'm really excited that it's going to be my first tablet, but mostly because it'll be the first Android device I own. I've been living with my Nokia N8-00 (Symbian Belle) for about 2 years now and I finally have a replacement.
Along with the excitement, I had a lot of questions about the device. I'll just list them below, so it'll be easier for you guys to answer them
1. Have I made the right choice?
The first thing I thought to myself after I pressed the 'Buy Now' button. I bought it mostly for watching movies and the TV shows that I regularly download from the internet. Some rigorous browsing, downloading of music, and mostly showing off my photos to other people (I'm a photographer and having a portfolio on-hand is a good idea). I haven't demoed the device before, but my friends have all said theirs works wonderfully (granted, they own the 7" version).
2. What is rooting? Do I need to root my device?
My friends keep talking about this rooting thing. I'm a new android user, so I lack the basic knowledge of these terminologies. Will I need to root my tablet? Is it safe to do so? What will I benefit from this procedure?
3. What are the best apps I can download?
I want to know what are the best apps I can install on my device for my particular needs (mentioned above). I also wanted to know how I can customize my device to the fullest extent. When I had an iPod Touch, I jailbroke it and installed WinterBoard to use custom themes and icons of my own choice. What is the procedure to replicate the same on an Android device?
4. Is Android App Development easy?
What language is it generally coded in? I have a basic understanding of HTML/CSS & PHP, a firm grasp on C# and .NET (from Windows 8 Development). I'd like to try my luck in the Android App genre, how many have tried the same and do you feel it is easy for a beginner/intermediate?
I'd really love it if you guys could help me out starting with this new journey of Android! Thank you all!

Well you're in the wrong forum. This is the original galaxy tab forum. Might want to post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1596
Our tablet here is laggy and slow, so you're not going to get proper opinions
1. It really depends on if you have a desktop computer or a laptop as well. If you don't? Sure, it's good for browsing and some other things. But I find watching video on it to be awful, the screen is just too tiny in comparison to an actual monitor, nevermind a TV screen.
2. Rooting allows you to access commands and run apps that you normally wouldn't be able to do. Most of the time, on this forum anyway, it also involves flashing another rom like Cyanogenmod to get even more functionality and remove some of the bloat and crapware that comes with the tablet (like touchwiz).
3. I use Firefox, Apollo and Android's built in gallery. The Android Market also has top paid and free app listings
4. Apps are written in Java and aren't too complicated if you have knowledge of the language and device.

Question: Is it possible to root the new Blackberry Q10 to run Android?

Hey guys. Not sure if this is the correct place to post this, but it wouldnt allow me to post in other area as I have fewer than 10 posts. Appologies if it should be in a different area
Anyways. I am a big blackberry fan due to the physical keyboard, and although the new OS is good, im still an android lover when it comes to software
i'm just wondering though, now that their chipset has changed to the snapdragon processor, would this make it any easier to root the device to run a version of android in the future? Or would it be very difficult?
I remember they did it to the HTC device that was on windows 6.5 a while back and the initial process took quite a while, but once some people had android up and running the rest was a breeze
so question is, would anyone else be interested in this? there is a real lack of high-end phones with physical keyboards and this is one of the reasons i bought the Q10. i do however still love android
anyone else interested? post here or let me know how difficult the process would be.
I was thinking the same.
I would immediately buy Android phone with Q10 form factor. I would even try using BB10 because I dont use as many apps on my GNote. Problem is me relying heavily on Google services (drive, music, etc.) and it seems like BB10 lacks native Google apps.
Also I burned myself with Palm (and I have to say Pre 3 was great, definitely on-par with Android phones of its time) and can't be sure Blackberry will be around in six months from now
Same here

Same here. I really need a qwerty phone, but LTE Android phones don't have it...
Yes, Please provide a way of rooting q10. I love qwerty phones. But no android phones has qwerty keypad.
You have the priv which is an android, and also you could have a jolla +physical keyboard (sailfish) which it is suppose that can run google services seamless. It is a non sense this lack of physical keyboards... we are going to a very basic scenario. Time ago we has touchkeyb, physical keyb and stylus. Can we call it progress?

This Will Be My First Android Tablet - Tips to Get Started

So I've owned Android phones for years. Droid X, S3, and now the One M8. I even had a brief stint with an Android Tablet, the HP Touchpad after the firesale, but it's been years and I barely used it anyway.
So I'm very new to the Android Tablet world, and I'm looking for input on how to get started.
What are the best tablet-optimized apps? (this is the biggest one I'm looking for)
What are the best tablet-optimized games?
What is the best productivity suite for tablets? (I've asked this in several threads and gotten some good feedback, but I'm always looking for more)
Where is a good place to get ideas for creative homescreen setups for tablets? (I'm one of the crazy people who's really into that)
Any other awesome tablet-specific tips anyone has?
Thanks so much. Can't wait to get this baby!

I dont know the answers to most of your questions since my app use and games tend to be limited to just the few types of games I enjoy these days, but as for homescreens I am sure we will see some awesome homescreen setups in a thread here soon enough. That would be the best place to get ideas I think because it will be from other users of this tablet. I love to customize the homescreen with new designs often too, but I generally stay with a similar feel. Which is minimal icons and widgets on screen, just a handful of shortcuts to launch the most common things, and double tap to get to the app drawer which I organize and filter to only show the specific apps I would ever use and not all the random ones. Here are a couple I did on my Nexus 10 from a couple years back:

IMO, it should be the other way around. You should buy a tablet for a reason/purpose, not find a reason/purpose to buy a tablet. Otherwise, it'll end up sitting in a drawer just like the previous one.
You say you've used Android phones before. The tablet experience isn't much different besides the bigger screen. The same advantages and disadvantages are present. It's pretty much universally agreed upon that Android is still pretty weak for tablet-optimized apps and games. It all comes down to your preference for screen sizes.
The reason I use a tablet is because sometimes I wish my smartphone had a bigger screen. It's nice to surf the web, watch Youtube, and read e-books. I run the pretty much the same apps on both my Tab S and my Nexus 5.

Clash of Clans should work well on Android tablets. It's a game that really needs a bigger screen. If you like city building games, try the new SimCIty buildit game which EA touts as being tablet optimized. Also, i read somewhere that Hearthstone will be release by the end of the year for Android tablets specifically (phone releases won't be available until later).
My two favorite customization apps are Zooper Widget and Nova Launcher. You should give them a try on the tablet. Checkout the XDA forum section for Themer and Zooper to get ideas: http://forum.xda-developers.com/themer
Baconreader on a tablet is great for looking at pr0n. :good:
I set mine up to be a pr0n only account and set the subreddits accordingly.
Open app, pr0n pops out.

I'd definitely recommend using Google Apps (Keep, Drive, Slides, etc.) these sync across your Google account which makes them extremely useful when you use a PC. You could use Microsoft's version of apps of this if that is more your style. I'd get a controller if you're planning on some heavy gaming as well; there are tons of bluetooth ones that work great. I definitely recommend rooted this tablet as there will tons and tons of development for it! Good luck!

Tizen

Hello ... This the 1st time im thinking of buying a smartwatch so im looking for something good ..... I want to buy gear s but the only thing that keeps me behind is its software .... I guess that it doesnt provide a lot of apps is that true ? Should i buy it or buy a android wear smartwatch ? Thanks
I have to say that I personally battled this difficult decision as well.
For me, since I already owned a TrueSmart and used it daily for 8 months, I knew that my next watch was going to require one of two features... First was a higher resolution display. Many of the popular apps for android were almost impossible to utilize properly. Second was a larger screen for mostly the same reasons.
Utter was the saving grace for the TS... Which allowed me to use many features that were otherwise unusable. For example, the keyboard was extremely tough to use. Even the Fleksy app... But in the end, many times I found the standard font sizes were too small to read on the 1.5" screen.
I ordered and tried a Neptune... And that was just a monster on my wrist...
When I previewed the Gear S, I was most impressed in many ways. I realized that a watch should not be a carbon copy of the features currently standard on full sized smartphones. What I used most on the TS, was already built in the Tizen OS. And the remote feature, was truly one of the better advancements I've seen in the wearables niche market.
I've had the Gear S for three weeks now, and have yet to find something I'm missing, as far as apps go. The Tizen store quantity and quality is bleak, for sure. But, that will change slowly... But will never be equal to Play or Apple stores.
All in all, the SmartWatch of choice is completely dependent on you and your needs. Figure out what you are buying one for, and what apps are absolutely necessary to your daily needs. This should help you make this tough decision.

Depends on how one defines "a lot". Hundreds of apps? Yes. And some of them are of quite good quality. But it will likely always have less of a selection of either Android Wear or Apple's upcoming smartwatch sadly. If you want a kickass watch and don't care much about a wide selection of apps, then Gear S is great. If you want the most selection of apps as an important buying parameter, then Android Wear or Apple's upcoming watch are likely best...
I belive the same but i saw a video were a man used an app to run apk on tizen and then i thought i could use it ...
