[Request] Remove stock Swype from custom ROMs

I don't know how many chefs read this side of the forum, but I know I'll get my hand slapped for posting this in the development side.
But now that Swype beta is available to pretty much everyone, why are we including the stock version anymore? Everyone seems to do it, and it's difficult to remove to install the beta.
It's obvious that the old version doesn't play nice with Gingerbread's text selection process, and the new version has solved that issue.
Can anyone explain why we're still including an almost useless version?

I can cook you up a straight stock rom without it. It's only an apk you can uninstall with tb

Thank you, but that's not really the point. I can remove it from any ROM, just asking why we're bothering to include something that generally doesn't work with our version of the OS.

its included because its the only authorized version allowed to be distributed by the manufacturer, if the developer ( the Rom maker ) included it, swype could get pissed and ask for a take down. you need to sign up for an account and be part of the beta to get it.
so in short.. its against Swype's ToS and EULA. in order to avoid complications, rom makers dont include it

That's just it, I'm not asking to include the new version... just to NOT include the old one.
The old one doesn't really work, and prevents the easy installation of the new one.
So why include broken software?

It's not just the APK, there's a file in system/lib that needs to go too. Last paragraph:
http://forum.swype.com/showthread.p...install-Swype-Swype-PreLoad-Production-Device
Edit: Instead of requesting the devs remove, write a quick script that will remove the old. Then you just need run it once whenever you install a new rom.

Again, I know how to remove it, I know that it's possible to remove.
The question that no one is answering is WHY INCLUDE SOFTWARE THAT IS NOT COMPATIBLE WITH GINGERBREAD?
Sorry for yelling, but I'm trying to grasp the value of having the original package.

Thank you for the link. The Swype beta always crashed for me and now I know why. I removed the files and now Swype works. Thanks!
I agree, I want to be able to install the latest swype. If I recall correctly, couldn't they make it so we could uninstall? I think that's how it was with OG Evo custom roms.
It's been removed from mine from day one.
I thoroughly inspect my ROM for every instance of software that I don't want.

1) It works just fine.
2) It takes 10 seconds to uninstall with TB.
3) Did you ever consider the possibility that some people may not have another version of swype?

1. It doesn't work right.
2. Takes longer than that including removal of the lib files and a half dozen reboots to get the beta installed
3. F%#@ them. Majority wins and its a fantastic idea to remove it, let's get rid of car panel, Twitter, footprints, friendstream, stocks, htcfacebook, fm radio too
its not in my rom either

[Q] Android Market and paid apps

Hi everyone
A lot of Chinese (non licensed) phones won't allow paid apps to be downloaded from the android market. On the other hand, I DO have a Chinese "no name" phone that downloads everything, including paid apps.
I'm trying to find out where all the information is located how the android market identifies the android device and either allows to download paid apps or denies it
My first guess of course was the build.prob, my friend copied the build.prob from my (paid apps download working) phone to his paid apps non working phone, NO SUCCESS, he still can't download any paid apps with my build.prob.
So, I'm guess there have to be other files(?) that also play a role on how a phone is recognized by the market?
Any suggestions?
Thanks
I don't think you are using official market...

Excuse me?
Of course I am trying to download paid apps from the official market, where else would I download paid apps?
And what you do mean by cheating? I don't want to cheat anyone, all I want is to fix a phone so I can buy apps from the OFFICIAL android market with that phone as well
Edit: Maybe I should keep it simpler? Here's the situation:
The official android market lets me buy apps when I am using my Chinese Phone A
When I try to buy apps with my Chinese Phone B, the download won't work, I can only download free apps.
What I want is to be able to buy apps with phone B as well. Nothing illegal, I just want to give Google some of my money

The main problem is that google doesnt allow China based phones to do this. There are reasons for this. It could also be that the phone tells the market where you are based on location.

That's what I'm trying to bring out. Because it is non licences phone, it won't allow you to do so. Even it is open source, phone maker still need to buy the license (Android 2.3 and above, the higher the os is, The more expensive it is. 2.2 and below is free ) from Google.
You can try using amazon if you want to burn some cash.

Like I wrote before, I DO have a Chinese phone that is definitely not licensed ( a Xperia Arc S clone) and that phone lets be me buy my apps
When I check all my devices on my pc when I login to the market, it is listed as "unknown" but still I can download any paid app I want to.
So, somehow this phone is identified as "o.k.", while other Chineses phones are not.
I'm just trying to find out what file(s) on the phone is responsibe for that, it can't just be the build.prob, I don't know this but I have the feeling the information must also be somewhere else?
Also, it can't be a valid or invalid IMEI because the same problem exists with some tablets pcs. Some are able to download paid apps, some are not and none of the have a GSM unit build in and there no IMEIs present.
That's why I was asking here, I was hoping somebody might know more about how the android market identifies a device

Question remains if all the impotant info in stored in the build.prob or what other file(s) might also be important in order how a device is recognized by the android market.

You really think so? That's the last place I would have guessed.
Here you go:
http://chinamobiles.org/downloads/zap/appx18i.zip
Let us know if you find anything
You could try this solution:
http://www.slatedroid.com/wiki/index.php/Fix_Market_For_Slates#Get_AndroidID_From_A_Phone
Essentially it involves finding the androidID on your phone (or emulator) where the market works using
Code:
adb shell sqlite3 /data/data/com.google.android.googleapps/databases/gls.db "select * from meta";
and then copying that to the phone where the market doesn't work using
Code:
adb shell sqlite3 /data/data/com.google.android.googleapps/databases/gls.db "update meta set intvalue='idnumber_from_above' where name='androidId'";
It's not a ROM fix but at least it might help some people.

If you don't care about using Google Play Music 5.0:
Find old apk (4.5.9 I think)
Uninstall 5.0
Turn off automatic updating in market
Install old apk
???
Profit
This is the only thing I did, wasn't too wowed with the new features of 5.0.
I also don't know what it would take to add the functionality to 5.0 :/
Hope this helps.

Ok well the no updating might not be possible from editing the 4.5.9 app.
I looked around the 5.0 app and it definitely doesn't have the Tungsten support files so it isn't just missing visually
I'm wonder what is involved with porting the Tungsten code to the 5.0 app...

Verizon VVM for Unlocked Phones
Having the same issue after just buying an LG V20 unlocked CDMA. Funny thing is i cannot understand why i did not have this problem when i bought my MOTO X pure edition CDMA unlocked phone in 2016. I think it is because the app was still available on Google Play then. I also get the APK corrupt message when i try to install the downloaded APK. First of all, when i did a transfer of all my apps to a new phone, i noticed that the Verizon Voicemail wasn't copied. I later saw in the Google Play app under library that it is not compatible with my phone, which is bull hokey because i just got an additional Verizon version of that same phone and it is preinstalled on that phone. I even used an APK extractor on that phone to copy out the VVM APK but got the same corrupt message when i tried to install it on my unlocked version. I believe it is due to a couple of things. I noticed that Verizon made a considerable amount of changes to the OS because the same phones with Android 7 have different settings screens. the language in the menu screens is even different. SO i think they embedded system or other files for this APK into the framework or OS of Verizon version phones and that is why the APK will not install.
So I used a program from the play store called Resource Extractor and extracted the Voicemail app from the Verizon LG V20 and copied the contents of the extracted files to the SD card. Interestingly enough, all of the file folders indicate 0 files until you copy to another folder on your SD card. There are now 662 files and folders in that folder. My problem is that i know nothing about APK development or coding on Android so i do not know how to take the extracted folders and files and create an APK from them. Has anyone had any success with this since the first posting here??? I like Verizon's visual voice mail application because it works much better than all the rest, but i refuse to pay Verizon 800 bucks for a new one. The one i recently purchased on the net is going back because the screen doesn't look right and the fingerprint reader is either not functional or disabled. It was claimed to be "New" but i have doubts because the screen colors do not look right. Here is the really funny thing. There is no reference in any of the setup process or in settings later for the fingerprint reader at all. So either this model did not have one or Verizon disabled it when they over wrote the OS. I don't really know.
Thanks For Listening

install older version of mi browser on miui 11??

hello,
am on miui 11.0.5.0 global and was able to remove the stock mi browser(v10.....etc).
am trying to install an older version of mi browser that had better features than newer versions , it installs but keeps closing everytime i open it!
is there any workaround to make it work?
I know I'm not answering your question.
But why exactly do you prefer to use a browser filled with ads and junk?

Regardless of ads or not, why do you still insist on using a inferior browser when there are so many others out there that do a better job.

All you mention is "the feature I'm looking for" or the "cause I'm looking for"
There's no direct mention or explanation of what you're looking for. Maybe more people will help you if you choose to explain a bit more rather than shut down every comment that's trying to help you.

the reason for posting this topic is to get help regarding running an older version of miui browser that installs but closes everytime i open in oreo/pie/q ......it runs fine on other android phones on nougat!!.
specifying the feature thats working on this old browser and not working on recent versions wont help coz poeple who "try to help" would simply recommend using other newer versions or even different browsers!!

Okay, so you know how it works in the software world. Nobody codes everything from scratch. What we do is build upon the work of others to get what we want. Your previous browser would have been built with various libraries that it hooks into to provide different functionality. Now a new one has come out which was installed on your fone and this is using later versions of the libraries and possibly some APIs may have been dropped. So you're trying to use the old browser with the new libraries and it's entirely possible that the APIs/ABIs it needs are no longer available. So you're SOL. You're going to have to run your browser in debug mode to see what's wrong. I hope it works out for you.
