Question HDR Videos colour banding and grayish overtone. Do you have this issue too? - Xiaomi Mi 11i / 11X Pro / Redmi K40 Pro+

Hi,
I have Mi 11x Pro (haydnin) stock firmware 12.0.2-12.5.2.
I am having this really annoying colours issue on HDR videos. All HDR videos have really bad color banding in dark areas and the colours appear grayish. The HDR is activated (as I can't change color filters in toolbox) but the videos don't look anything like they should.
I have played side by side with another HDR capable device Asus zenfone 5z and Poco F3 GT (K4O Pro Game enhanced edition). The difference is quite night and day.
Setting the phone in day mode almost fixes the color banding , but the colors are still dull and grayish and the blacks look like I'm using an LCD mobile!
Here see for yourself. A video speaks more than billion words.
If you have this device.
Please set it to night mode.
Set brightness to full.
Play this video on YouTube from 2:30 onwards. (
)
And let me know if you have the ugly color banding and greyish colours as well.

Confirmed the same issue. Seems that Xiaomi has not handled HDR content well

Yes. Absolutely unacceptable if you advertise this phone as having an award-winning display. Please mention your mobile version and firmware version too.

I'm using K40 Pro + Xiaomi.eu 21.8.11
I'm thinking of the incompatibility between Miui and Youtube app when playing HDR content.

It's not only YouTube. But every platform I tested, it is buggy.

UPDATE:
ADDED A BRIEF VIDEO of the issue as compared a a device without this issue (Poco F3 GT)

I returned the device. But if you can't. I suggest you use SVP video player from playstore. It'll give you right colours.

Clear camera cache and reset the setting in the camera app and set picture quality at highest

I'm not talking about the camera pics/videos.

HDR is terrible in the Mi 11i. It oversharpens and has inconsistent saturation. I'm hoping they'll address that in the MIUI 13 update.

HDR videos lookes washed out in Youtube

Hey anyone facing when playing a hdr video in youtube the color looks washed out
There is no contrast and no accurate colour see screenshot below
I don't think Poco supports HDR video with its "meh" display.
Edit: apparently it should support YouTube HDR playback in 1080p, but I think the screen is not capable of displaying it. I tried some videos and they look washed too.
Same Problem I have

Yup, I have checked for the same and yes colors are washed out tend to be more grey and white side so there is no hdr support in Poco. idk why they still show it in youtube listing like1080pHDR.

yes
this is annoying because if videos are HDR then we cant watch in youtube i didn't find any option to play hdr videos without HDR.
Pause the video in the exact frame, go to display settings, turn off Night/Read Mode and change the Contrast to Increased/Automatic contrast(Warm), reduce the brightness to the viewable range! come back to Youtube, you could see a nice difference in the paused image! shows good dynamic range! but once starts the video, display resets and it starts showing washed out images!! Looks display is ok to display issue in the software to me!
did anyone found how to disable hdr playback in youtube ?

This same video playback on my poco F1 looks like Ur screenshot 1 and def not ugly like the 2nd one.
Unfortunately I am not able to take a screenshot or screenrecord of the same .
The problem is with hdr playback the screenshot comes out black.
Is my display ok cos of the pie based beta 8.11.1 I am using.
Attaching screenshots to explain what is happening with screenshots
Well i played Avengers Infinity war 2160p.10bit.HDR.BluRay.8CH.x265.HEVC (3.69 GB) via both the stock video player and MX player and both rendered colors correctly ?
I can see HDR youtube videos near to the perfection for this screen. The colours are amazing.

I am whit MI 10.2 beta 8.11.1
I found a weird bug. Turn off auto-brightness and increase brightness. Now play an HDR video on youtube. While that washed out video is playing, hower your finger over the light sensor on and off. The screen will try to get dimmer for some reason as if the auto-brightness if on.
I can confirm too. YouTube HDR videos look more on the natural side and a tiny bit washed out. It's definitely doesn't render the more punchy Colors of HDR. Obviously because Poco display is not HDR complaint.
The youtube videos look way better on the web browser than they look on the youtube app.

Well I'm using the global rom but do check the screenshot for the additional details. As for the HDR screenshots, all of them comes out black.
Plays awesome in 8.11.1 beta Android 9 ROM...
Colours look beautiful for me in HDR. When I rotate the screen, it switches back to regular version for a split second and then back to HDR.
Running nitrogen OS on my device.
Check these screenshots
Videos downloaded in HDR format and 1 without hdr
Now you can tell the difference

U mean to say the bottom ones are hdr videos playing on ur phone.
If that is true I certainly don't have such problems.
I have compared YouTube hdr playback on poco with non hdr playback on iPhone 8 plus and mine looked better.
If u can link which videos to download and test i can send screenshots.
the colors looked washed out, because when the phone is at max brightness (which HDR videos turns up the brightness automatically).
there is an option in "display"
"Contrast and colors" select "standard contrast"
pretty sure your issue will be gone, but do note that selecting this option will make your display look yellowish

[EXYNOS S9+] [Q] Problem with HDR videos?

Hi, I will copypaste the thread I did post on reddit.
I've just recently got the S9+ Exynos (EU) variant and I wanted to be hyped about HDR media playing. Downloaded some 10bit HDR H265 files and played them through the Samsung Gallery. Cranked High Performance mode to 1440p, +10 brightness and tried between Adaptive/Cinema Mode (this didn't make any difference besides some slight changes in colour and gamma).
Problem is, I see color gradients and a bad greenish tint, lifeless appearance overall. I did try Youtube 4K HDR demos in 1440p as well and, while I can see the extra PQ, color banding is very apparent: background blurred images seem like a weird crushed rainbow :-/
Is this supposed to look like this? I did read about the release (around march) issues people had with black crush and Netflix's HDR, but also read that some update fixed it. It appears that S9+'s AMOLED is 8bit, so is 10bit HDR and Youtube's HDR the culprit? How to play HDR media properly?
PS: Another thing to note is that neither gallery video player nor in youtube player does say HDR in any window or setting while checking file properties. I did read some reports of people seeing HDR stamped at the start of the videos.
Thanks in advance,

Netflix on Xperia 1

I have 2 issues which I am hoping someone on this forum could help with
1. Videos on Netflix are really dark. An app kicks in once Netflix opens and I'm assuming this is the problem
2. No videos play in 21:9 as promised has anyone got this to work? Pinch to zoom doesn't cut it as it crops the video to make it fit

I've noticed these issues as you've
1. Side by side comparison with my Galaxy S8 clearly shows video playback on Xperia 1 is really dark. This is more noticeable with Netflix app and also with pre-loaded Spiderman Far From Home trailer. Not entirely sure if this happens with YouTube too (I think it does because S8's super saturated display blows off X1's natural colour reproduction. Maybe its just my perception.)
2. Only YouTube videos by default play in 21:9 for me. I wasn't able find single NetFlix show or movie in that aspect ratio.

I believe the Samsungs increase the brightness in video apps inc Netflix.
Is hdr dark in Netflix to?
21:9 is a common cinema scope, I hope they get this sorted.
Thanks

Some videos do play in full screen without pinch to zoom, for example fast and furious 8. It needs to be natively on Netflix in the 21:1 aspect ratio.

How To Guide I am fed up of this ****ty camera processing of Nord 2.

The stock camera app of Nord 2 is ****. It over processes the images and the photos don't look like they are taken from a 50MP camera.
Any suggestions on what to do or some good GCam you can suggest?
Some examples? High mp sensors suffer in low light and have a more shallow depth of field especially up close to subjects. An accurate AF lock is important because of the narrow DOF; example, always try to get a AF lock on the subject's closest eye when shooting a face.
Adjust your shooting style according to the camera's strengths and weaknesses. See as the camera sees not as your eyes see. Human vision has exponentially more processing power and an incredible imaging system more so than any camera.
I want a proper gcam version if available or any better alternative that stock.
Always disable HDR option and pictures will look a lot better (sadly the app doesn't remember this setting so you have to turn it off each time) . The HDR process in the Nord 2 is absolutely awful .
Download the first file in this link. Photos taken with the primary camera will be much better, though I don't think Night Sight works. https://www.celsoazevedo.com/files/android/google-camera/dev-wichaya/f/dl5/
DISABLE HDR. It's a known issue.
But you can't disable HDR when taking photos directly in other apps (whatsapp, telegram, etc)? I had OP8T and it had same issue and I had returned it...
GCam won't give you 50MP. AFAIK the only way to get 50MP on stock Nord 2 is by using the Extra HD feature in the stock camera app.
I'm curious to know if people with rooted devices have this capability enabled in the API. Let us know please

I don't think HDR and other processing options are enabled for 3rd party apps (same goes for the ultrawide lens, you can't use it in other apps) for me whatsapp and telegram pictures look good (but they are heavily compressed)

50Mpx is available in some GCAm versions (Wichaya and Nikita if I remember correctly, BSG and Greatness don't have the full resolution option) , but the 50mpx full resolution of the sensor is totally useless (not only with the nord 2 , but generaly with all other phones) , 12mpx pixel bining gives you better image processing, less noise , etc... a quick look at the reviews explain very clearly why is not a good idea to use the full resolution (50, 108mpx etc...) of a phone sensor.
Personally I use the BSG 8.4 v10 version and pictures are great, Google HDR+ implementation give a lot better results than stock app

Was this on stock or rooted? Btw for me the 4:1 binning is not something desirable since I stack very low light photos, run my own denoising and various other process. Hence why I need the full sensor data made available to apps like OpenCamera

Yes, IM apps do compress photos but that's different story than colour fidelity. In my time with 8T the colours in photo app and telegram/whatsapp were simply blown out of proportion: something normal-red in real life was glowing like burning Mars in 8T photos. After disabling HDR in camera app the photos looked ok (though still overprocessed hence IMHO OP3 photos looked better!) but in whatsapp/telegram I still had same issue with stupid extreme colours...

Question Agressive Grey tinting in dark videos and a permanent grey tint in videos played on the browser!

I'm seeing really ugly grey tinting with my mi 11x pro (which is supposed to have a flagship screen), i also have a much cheaper redmi note 10 pro Max, and it's amoled display produces much better colour and tints. Also weirdly, the problem seems to rectify itself when you get the volume animation (check out the video I'm playing Dune on fmovies). Do we have a solution for this?
Did you find a solution?

Could be a software related issue, are you on latest MIUI ROM ? Also does the problem persist in other apps (youtube/netflix) ?

Then changing the browser should fix it.
edit - Also check browser settings about video playback, like use hardware acceleration (something similar)

Changing browsers doesn't work neither does video playback I'm beginning to think it's just one of those bugs that is so specific it never gets fixed
