How To Guide [No root] Disply always in 4k mode - Sony Xperia 1 III

IMPORTANT: This no longer works after the update to Android 12. 'wm size' resets itself to default immediately after you change it. If you know (or at least have an idea) of a possible fix - please reply, so far I'm clueless.
I'll edit the post again if anything is found.
If you have already updated like me you can run 'wm density reset' so your phone looks normal again.
So the phone by default runs in 1096x2560 and only in select apps with appropriate content in 4k. XZ Premium did the same thing and it is possible to make always run in 4k. I've decided to try the same on 1 III and it works!
How to:
Enable USB debugging in developer settings
Download and run ADB, you phone should provide the driver automatically. If not, it can be downloaded from here.
Run the following commands
Code:
adb shell
wm size 1644x3840
wm density 630
Done! Exit ADB shell by typing exit there.
From my testing this works flawlessly with any app and the 120hz mode. My device didn't get too warm from this, battery now is at 35°C and CPU at 40. No lagging or freezes whatsoever either, everything runs smoothly in 120 fps. The only thing I noticed is that when using always-on display the phone unlock can be a bit slow sometimes, but only when unlocking with said display lit up.
How to undo - the same as before but with these commands:
Code:
adb shell
wm size reset
wm density reset
Please report how's your experience and battery life if you try this.

I don't really understand, how will this make the apps render in 4K?
The screen is always displaying 4k resolution (you would have 3/4 of the screen black if it displayed only FHD resolution) but actively upscale to 4k the apps that doesn't render in 4k (so most of them).
Or is the tweak only to make the phone render the home screen and parameters in 4k?

No. By default the phone renders everything in 2560, except for rare cases of a suitable photo in Google Photos and a 4k YouTube video, etc. This makes the phone render all the apps in 4k no matter what. I've confirmed this by looking at the text and images in them (via magnifying glass), they're all sharp to a single pixel (and aren't without this).

Is 4K mode restricted to apps selected by Sony by default? Like if I have a random graphic novel reader app, will that be rendered in 4K or 2560 assuming the underlying images are 4K or higher resolution?

Seems like restricted to apps selected by Sony. When in default mode, when I open a pic in Google Photos is is in 4k, but when I open the same pic in Google Files (has built-in viewer), it isn't. In "always 4k" mode the pic is 4k in Google Files.

That's a damn shame - would it be easy to make a tasker routine or something to issue those commands automatically when an app is launched?

I don't think that would be possible without root. But on the bright side, always using 4k surprisingly doesn't seem to affect the battery life much, at least for me.

Sounds good. I'll def try it when I get my 1 iii. Does it persist between reboots?

Yes it does. Even the reboot screen is a little bit messed up because their animation is not 4k.

I can understand wanting to get the best possible picture/viewing experience when paying for a 4k screen.
However, can the difference be seen with the naked eye...you know without a magnifying glass? I guess my concern is: Why overwork the screen/CPU/GPU and battery if the benefit cannot be seen?

Weird. If you take a screenshot before applying these commands, the resolution of the image is 1644 x 3840. After applying these commands, the resolution of the image is 2466x5760.

Is this totally safe?

Could you make an Automate script for this (if you have the knowledge and time)

Yes it does. Sony usually upscales the screenshot to make it 4k. Now that the source is also 4k, that upscale makes it even larger.
I hope there's a way to disable this upscale, even when not using the 4k mod, if the content is 1080p then I don't need it stored as a 4k image.

Look like this is fixed in 61.0.A.14.3, can anyone else try?

Hey I came across this thread on the XZ Premium forum. Do you think that in the future devs are going to adopt this to custom kernels aswell?
ADB "fake" 4k vs Kernel 4k
I'm late to the party, but hopefully some of you are still around to shed some light on the eternal debate of wether true 4k is worth the hassle of unlocking the bootloader and mess with all the steps to finally get it to work. Most of the info...

It has a pattern of intersecting lines 1 pixel apart with lines 2 pixels apart at the edge, as you can see all are defined, wheras they where blurred and aliased before the ADB commands.

So one problem I found - setting the display to 4k all the time seems to skew the wireless charging targeting instructions that come up

I hope they will fix this soon, and even add a built-in always 4k mode (fixing all the small bugs like the one you pointed out or the AoD not working properly).
The difference between 1080p and 4k is noticeable in everyday use, especially in text. Maybe this is because I was used to a 1440p display for the past 6 years (and going back to 1080p is noticeable) but still, this phone has all these pixels, why not have an option to always use them.
I attached some pictures taken in both modes. The filenames are self-explanatory but I am sure you will be able to find which one is 1080p and which one is 1644p. Diagonal lines especially suffer a lot at 1080p, like for example the letter 'w'. Overall, text looks very soft at 1080p compared to 1644p.

Phone became a bit laggy no?

[Bug] AT&T NOTE Experiencing Screen Problem with Dark Images and Video

EDIT: Another long thread on this same issue here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1510251
Is anyone else experiencing messed up deep black colors (pixelization) in images, wallpaper, etc?
I thought I saw someone else mention this problem, but I can't remember which thread.
This is happening to me with almost every image or photo that has deep blacks in it, including photos I take with the camera and view on the phone!!
EDIT: I tried to attach screenshots of the problem to this post, but the uploaded images end up looking completely normal (gorgeous) when viewed on any other system. On my phone, however, they look like total pixelated garbage.
Do I need to exchange it, or did I screw up a setting somewhere? Any ideas?
I get that with some certain images and sometimes videos too. I believe it was like that on my skyrocket and gs2 too. Super amoled screens have saturated colors and causes black to pixelate even on our HD resolution...
-On another NOTE, Samsung goes 5.3"
I get that too and my skyrocket and gs2 was no different. Some pictures and certain videos. I believe Samsung super amoled screens have over saturated colors which causes the black colors to show up pixelated. Even in our HD resolution screens. Hopefully Samsung will improve this in the future.
-On another NOTE, Samsung goes 5.3"
So this is considered "normal" on Samsung's AMOLED phones? And it happens on every single device?!
I take little comfort in the fact that it's happening to everyone, and I personally consider it unacceptable for any device in 2012.
Some images and videos are totally and completely unviewable -- including every dark wallpaper I've attempted to use, and even many of the photos I've taken with the phone's camera. The photos do look fine when transferred and viewed on another device, of course, but how the hell can I tell if I just took a good picture if it literally looks like I used to MS Paint to draw it!?
How is this acceptable to anyone? What's going on here?
I would return it. Mine had no problem.

Omg, yes! that video is a horrendous pixelated mess on my Note!
Does that mean something is hosed and I need to exchange it? Or, is there a fix?
You are not the only one having issues. I am having the same problems, and I took mine back to best buy. I had them test there new units, and they had the same issues. Then I went to a local AT&T store and all of their demo units had the same problems. I dont know if its because its new release issue, but its very annoying! Also, open the android market and the grey tabs on the home screen mine have bands running through them, then also the skype app home screen you can really tell it.
Sadly, blocky artifacts for me.

i can tell you positively that video plays perfect on my Note..
I took five co-workers in the breakroom and made it pitch dark and when playing that video nobody can even tell where my screen ends and the phone begins because the black blends so well..
Not to say I never see blotches but its only on low res images or if the video just sucks.
That's how screens are.. the nexus is similar

Here are a few images that you can use to test this issue on your Note. First view them on your Note, and then view them on a PC to see how they're actually supposed to look. Pay special attention to the color transition areas and deep black areas. I agree that it appears software-related... something is definitely wrong with the gfx drivers.
I wonder if any of our friendly all-star devs can fix it? Do you think it justifies its own thread in the dev forum?

That video is garbage in both the stock browser and YouTube app; however, it looks great in Dolphin HD browser.
The still images I posted also look completely normal in Dolphin HD, but they look like pixelated garbage in every other app -- to include gallery, quickpic, tapatalk, etc.
So, I definitely believe it's a software-based rendering issue of some sort.
Hopefully our all-star devs can fix it, or perhaps the upcoming official ICS release will solve it...
Video looks like garbage for me in YouTube app as well, even with HQ checked. The only way to see it in full quality is to view it in Dolphin Browser HD, with the user agent set to desktop mode.
However, if I do this, another problem arises. The blacks are no longer black, but dark gray. I suspect that in desktop mode, Dolphin Browser doesn't know how to convert RGB16-235 to full range. Does anyone have any ideas? This is definitely a software issue.

Faulty down-scaling on games like Clash of Clans

I'm having a strange issue with down-scaling, where games look blurry, fuzzy, jagged, and low-res on my Edge. The best example is the game Clash of Clans. When zoomed all the way out, the resolution looks like 480p. Text is jagged and the graphs are generally blurry/fuzzy. As I zoom in, it appears the game fluctuates in and out of focus. When zoomed all the way in, it appears just fine. I have no idea what is causing this, but I can temporarily fix it by clearing the app cache and restarting, after which the are sharp and crystal clear. But then, as the day progresses, I'll suddenly notice that the resolution snapped back to low-res. Clearing cache and restarting fixes it again, but it's only temporary.
Another user started a thread in the Note 4 forums saying the same thing. http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4-att/help/clash-clans-graphics-bad-update-t3064467. And there are a couple other discussions floating around on Reddit and elsewhere. But, there isn't much traction or answers. Has anyone experienced this?
EXAMPLE (viewing the full size really shows the discrepancy):

display differences between nexus 5 and s6
I have attached two screen shot examples of how my clash of clans looks between the older nexus 5 (cleaner, but smaller resolution) with the s6 (very blury). The s6 is verizon using android 5.0.2. The nexus 5 is android 5.1.1
Let me know if you have any suggestions of things to try or what to check.
Same here and it's not good when I'm in war and it starts screwing up takes more than once to touch the right area, it's like bad traction. I don't know if it is touch wiz. And it goes to multi tasking allot to when i play clash odd clans like the button on the bottom left of the s6. Idk man.
I just bought a Galaxy Tab S2, and I get the same thing. Text is illegible when I'm zoomed all the way out. Did the S6 ever get a fix?
any solutions yet? i'm having the same problem :/
This is very strange, I have no such issues on my Edge.
Okay, let's get down to facts.
The phone is Quad HD aka 2k, most games and apps do NOT even have Full HD graphics. So it's not downscaling it's Up scaling. Up scaling low resolutions graphics will obviously result in blurring and pixelation...
However I don't experience any blurry texture in CoC, but yes, it pixelates. Even 1080p videos pixelates a tiny bit on the Edge because it's upscaled. 2k and 4k videos looks beautiful though.
Do a factory reset. By the way I enabled GPU rendering in Developer options, maybe that's why I'm not facing the issues that you are.
Cheers to the "Edge" makes things look differently though.

It only maintains the low resolution until a reboot. If i reboot it and right after open the game, it doesn't look blurry or low res at all. But if i wait a minute or two to run the game after the reboot it looks like it has been down-scaled compared to when i opened clash right after it. I noticed this on asphalt 8 too. Tried a factory reset and enabling gpu rendering but the problem persists... Contacted samsung and they told me to contact the game developers.

UGGHH i've got the same behavior... Contact the game developers when the game is fine as soon as the device boots up??? They're gibronis.
Okay. I had this issue on some games, now it's gone.
I did this...
Boot into recovery mode (newbies, don't ask how, research it),
wiped the cache first,
then factory reset,
booted up,
set up,
installed the new firmware update
(I read pretty much every region received it),
install Game Tuner (and set everything to the max).
Games looks better and smoother than before.

I didn't know about this "Game Tuner", but i just installed it to see if it would work. And it actually did... I didn't need to factory reset my phone or even wipe the phone's cache.
It just feels like another device when i'm playing games on it.

Even with game tuner the resolution goes blurry after a bit. It seems game tuner doesn't maintain the nice crispness. On my Galaxy Tab S2. My older Nexus 7 2013 is always crisp and clear. Never buying a Samsung again.

Motorola Stock Camera Thread : (Updates received)

WOW!
Today got an update and now stock camera supports manual exposure.
First impression is its nice nifty feature to have.
And I feel the picture quality has also improved in the low light, though will have to test it further to be assure.
Now waiting for the day when we have full manual camera supporting Camera2 API.
:good:
Is it just my imagination or does the stock Google Camera app now also support manual exposure?
It had the settings before but to me it always seemed like they didn't have any effect on the Moto X. But now they do.
But I do love the way it is implemented on the Moto Camera. Nifty.
Is there an APK somewhere... I don't have the update. When I check the Google Play listing it has the images for the new camera but I don't seem to be able to access it?

This is internal thing. If manufacturer has locked or didn't provide some features then they won't work in the camera apps, doesn't matter if other camera apps show controls in front end.
Now since Motorola has provided this missing feature, it will work in other apps also.
There are many camera apps which show enormous manual controls like manual ISO, shutter speed etc but none works in MotoX because they are not supported in back end.
Hope Motorola provides all manual controls supported in camera2 API, that will open many more possibilities.
The Google camera app has supported manual exposure for months. You had to enable it in advanced controls. The Moto Camera makes it far more convenient, though.

Clicked with HDR mode turned off and manual focus turned on. Notice the stickers, they have fine details which are washed out in the course of reducing noise:
View attachment 3325410
A Better Camera
Shooting in normal mode doesn't make any difference. But there is 'Night Mode' in this app which also requires stable hands for few seconds before it clicks the shot. I clicked the same shot using the night mode. I feel its kind of HDR mode where it merges few shots taken in the background, though not exactly sure.
Here noise processing seems much better but slightly over sharpening can also be noticed around edges. We get much more details around focused area but still the washed down effect can be noticed at out of focus areas:
View attachment 3325411
Camera+ (Modified version of stock camera)
There are options to toggle two types of noise processing and I turned off both of them. I also set the JPG compression mode to 100% so I loose slightly lesser data during JPG compression. But images comes out are double in the data size. One image clicked by stock app is around 4 MB but this app saves a file at around 8MB.
There is no noise processing thus we get as much as possible details but this comes at the cost of huge raw grains:

Conclusion : Which one is better app for MotoX?
Answer : No idea, I have always been confused. Stock app is still better suited due to quick accessibility and convenient controls. A better camera can bring out better pics straight out of the phone but its useful only in the situation when subject is stable and you have time to spend on the shot. If you use photo editing softwares on your computers then Camera+ will give you as much as possible data to post process, that ugly looking grain can be easily taken care in the editing software, that too in much better way than the dumb brain of stock camera app.
I have plenty of camera apps in the phone and use different apps in different situations. Though now a days I mostly use stock app due to better compatibility and convenient controls.
For whatever reason the Play Store wasn't updating my phone. I removed the updates I had installed and then went into the play store and updated the app to the newest version. If you have problems give that a try.
Don't know how many of you used it but, with the latest update, HDR lost tap to focus. Not no mention that the addition of exposure control is very finicky and sometimes doesn't do anything. Just a heads-up for those who haven't updated yet.

Couple of days back updated the phone to 5.1 and updated all the apps also. Now the camera has become terrible. The images coming out are having very heavy and unbearable water painting kind of effect.
Why Motorola why?
Previous update with exposure control brought some hope that Motorola caught up right path in improving camera but this new revision is much more terrible and hopeless. :crying:

What is Google Camera (AKA GCam)?
Google Camera is the camera app for the Google Nexus and Google Pixel phones. It is not designed or intended to be run on other phones.
What is HDR+?
HDR+ is Google's proprietary image processing routine. HDR+ employs image stacking to control exposure, and also to preserve details, reduce noise, increase sharpness, etc. It is an all-in-one package.

The Night Mode is very noisy. I think the Stock Night Mode from xiaomi is more accurate.

I agree. Gcam has better details in daylight. The main benefit IMO is using the 3.7x lens. It is so much more detailed in gcam, especially indoors.
And, of course, astrophotography. You can't beat that.
This appears to just be links to the two best known Gcam dev's Gcam versions rather than specific versions for the Mi 10/Pro.

Hi! one question, I installed the app en de XML..but how can I toggle all the lenses? Kind regards Tom
Depends which app you installed, after some research (actually hours of playing around) I came across some apps that have the option of adding additional lenses.
Several of the Gcam 7.4 I tried were not stable so I m using Urnyx05's 7.3.018. version 2.1.
I ve attached my config, you have to go into settings and enable the other lenses, I dont think the config enables them. (edit: it does on ports that support it, edited XML)
It might also be worth following the Note 10 Gcam thread too, as the cameras are the same, the same apps and configs should work too, although I ve not tried them yet.
Install burial beta 7
https://f.celsoazevedo.com/file/cfiles/gcm1/GCam_7.3_Burial_release_beta_7.apk
Then apply my in customized xml attached and you will be happy
Tried 4 different cameras and none are saving night sight pictures
It takes the picture, a preview shows in the bottom right, but then it just disappears
I ve had that sometimes, now I just cant view pictures via the camera, got to go to the gallery, using burial and the config 2 posts up.
It takes like 20 seconds to save night sight photos and I don't know why
Usually show up is photos app after 20 secs
Probably cos its stitching all those images together. Not that impressed with Burial tbh, lots of noise in night mode.
Does the gcam record hdr video in 10bit bt 2020 Color space at 4k 60Hz or just 8bit?
Anyone else not not able to use other cameras with ARNOVA8G2?
FAQ says to tap the screen and a tree will appear. I see no tree.
I've taken a photo of a toy cat and some printed text/pattern for comparison. I keep hearing that gcam blows the stock cam out of the water but I just don't see it. The stock photos are much warmer indoors, but I have lightroom mobile on my phone so that doesn't bother me too much. To my eyes, the stock app does a much better job at resolving fine detail and I have no idea what the gcam app is doing in the 3.7x zoom. Also the portrait mode, while probably sharper than the stock app, doesn't really do much background blurring.
For selfies, I get it. I think gcam captures more detail but I always need to touch them up because gcam seems to pump up the red channel far too much.
Here's a dropbox link to the photos.
These were all taken with Urnyx's 7.3 v2.3: GCam_7.3.018_Urnyx05-v2.3.apk and the yan1.xml config file.
EDIT:
I've found another gcam version (Burial) which gives me better results. I also tested out the Lightroom camera which I am a big fan of. There is more noise in the Lightroom photos but there's also more detail. The best example of the difference in detail is to look at the dark grey around the text. In real life it's a very fine cross hatching. The stock camera renders this as a mix of diagonal lines, hatching and smudges. Gcam does better abut renders it more as black dots to the right, pretty good in the centre but a little smudged and then diagonal lines to the left. The Lightroom camera looks more like the actual pattern, albeit with more noise and less sharpening. It does soften as you move right to left but it's the most consistent of the three.
Here's the Dropbox link.
Lightroom is also much warmer but again that can be easily dialed in. For the purposes of this I've just left everything on Auto.
Not sure which one I'll use. I might need to do some more testing.
I ve been using Burial 7.3.018 months, waaay better than stock, you can add each lens too.

You sure You want to use it since you don't know what "it" "does"?
You ever changed Your resolution on a TV or Monitor?
It's the same. ALL "it" does is changing the Resolution+Hz Rate

You're welcome! It basically just changes the default Display Mode to what You want. Xperias do that automatically mostly but don't leave users with a choice at all like on most other Android Devices (OnePlus, Samsungs and now also Pixels). And it doesn't looks like Sony is giving us that Option with Android 13 while it introduced it to AOSP officially... Blame Sony for bad Software
Hello!
Anyone know why im getting this error?
XQ-BC52:/ $ service call SurfaceFlinger 1035 i32 3
Result: Parcel(Error: 0xffffffffffffffff "Operation not permitted")
Thank you!
EDIT: Non rooted
@Miustone
Getting the same error exactly
C:\Android>adb shell wm size
Physical size: 1096x2560
C:\Android>adb shell service call SurfaceFlinger 1035 i32 1096x2560x60Hz
Result: Parcel(Error: 0xffffffffffffffff "Operation not permitted")
Hi! does it work on android 12? Thanks!

It works with "su':
Code:
XQ-BC72:/ # service call SurfaceFlinger 1035 i32 1
Result: Parcel(NULL)
XQ-BC72:/ # wm size
Physical size: 1644x3840
Override size: 1096x2560
I can confirm that refresh rate is changing but there is no difference with resolution. Whe I set native 1644x3840 in RDP client it looks like 1096x2560 (service call SurfaceFlinger 1035 i32 0)

Rooted ? Flash my zip with magisk, stands in the 2nd post here.
It doesn't change resolution, only refresh rate. My device is rooted.

To be more precise: the phone gets to display 4k in some very few places. The only one I was able to see is the camera app viewfinder (only, not the UI), the wallpaper and Google Photos when playing videos (only, not the UI nor photos). Here are some examples. I tried to display this image, which is a test pattern I made, at 8k resolution (7680x7680). From bottom to top, it's 8k, 4k, 2k, 1k.
View attachment 8k_test_pattern.png
The reason I went 8k is because of chroma subsampling on my next example : video. Google Photos can't play yuv444p videos, so I had to use yuv420p, and that's why I went 8k so the 4k pattern won't be affected by the chroma subsampling.
View attachment 8k_test_pattern.mp4
Download the video (right-click, save link as) since it's so high definition lots of browsers won't play it.
Here are the results. From any app (I tried Google Photo and my gallery), it's rendered at 1096p because there are visible artifacts. But when viewing the video from Google Photo's video viewer (only, my gallery app video player doesn't display 4k), the pattern is correct.

Screenshot of the previous screenshot from Google Photo (which displays at 1096p)
My previous comment is still relevant since, whether or not I set service call SurfaceFlinger 1035 i32 to any of the numbers 0 to 3, the result is the same : 1096p everywhere except in Google Photo's video player. If you want to more drastic example, set wm size to a very small amount, and look at this... I set wm size 274x640 (and the density accordingly at 105), everything on my phone is super lowres with very visible upscaling artifacts.... except the video, which is still at 4k!
So it's not even like in Android 11 where there was some apps that ran at 4k and others at 1096p, here, even within the same app, some content is at 4k and other at 1096p. So I guess it will be very hard to find a way to always output at 4k. Maybe we can use some hidden settings from Android 13? Android 13 allows to change the resolution of a device, but Sony didn't add this feature. Maybe there is still a way to activate it (via adb, root or something else).
I hope someone knowledgeable will be able to figure this out.
I gotta try setting 60hz to see if Kodi can work that way. I'm not sure if Kodi doesnt work because of refresh or because of ultrawide resolution.

Kodi doesn't work because of refresh so keeping it at 60 Kodi will work for sure.
