Question R/W access to Boot animation or just system in general - Moto G Power (2021)

Okkkkaaayyyyy so story time
I have been Racking My Brain and Maybe I'm Just Not thinking outside the Black-Box.
So I hate My Boot animation+logo I have The Motorola G Power (2021) Borneo.
I have already rooted device through Magisk and Have successfully rooted. So I have Root Access super simple (if I didn't already mention that)
Been doing my regular tweaks on build.prop and have been going nuts cause I want to change my Bootanimation + splash due to the Horrid Warning that pops on to remind me I am an awful person and my life is a lie.
Sooo anywho as we know the ext4 filesystem pisses Jr. Off Hardcore, feel like I bought the phone it's mine. And as far as the Advertisement bull**** I am Not going to Go to some Random Asshole and Say "Hey dude!!!! You seen this ****????, This here my Friend is a Full Blown Bundle Of Badass you see this Moto Boot here? Freaking Mint Bro!!!!"
So I have successfully gotten rid of most the Suck but the rest I wanna change Is Locked For a Bad Boy Like Me, iv tried Remount I've tried, manually changing permissions even offered a quicky but Nada.
So I am curious in build.prop I have
Dev.mnt.blk.vendor
Which is the **** ass dm-0 the dreaded POS that is All evil.
So is there a way I can change my permission s for these awful Dirty Good For Nothing Commies? Or am i stuck in Limbo Offering My Phone A Good **** to just let me in?

I have tried adb to mount / no custom Recovery for my Phone That I Know Of and I use Root explorers several different ones I've tried and I do have read access to all files, just not read write privs

Did you su after gaining shell?

Like Mr Nerd, I too struggled to make sense of your post. To change your boot animation use this. It will let you change the animations before and after the "bootloader is unlocked and software integrity cannot be verified..." text that briefly pops up on the screen. Getting rid of that warning text will be a bit trickier though. It can probably be done with a hex editor if you know what you're doing.

[Q] Rooting Leagoo Lead 1

Hi All,
I have purchased a leagoo lead 1 http://www.leagoo.cc/c51181.html (slick design and under 150$) but now I'm trying to get it rooted.
I've tries Kingo root, V Root, Shuame, Towel root, Framaroot and none of it is working.
The phone operates on 4.4.2 with an MTK 6582 processor..
When holding Vol up + power I get a fastboot option though.
Would extracting boot.img and rework it mean something? or has anyone usefull tips?

First of all .. I managed to root it.
Needed: Kingosoft Sony bootloader unlocker, Kingosoft one click root, (www.kingoapp.com) Mobile uncle tools
Start sony bootloader unlocker and run it with your phone connected.
It will restart your phone to fastboot and then it remains idle.
Keep your phone plugged in, switch it off and boot manually into the fastboot (power + vol up)
From here the unlocker will proceed unlocking.
Step 1 done.
Now open kingosoft root connect the phone and let it do its thing.
At restart of the phone kingosoft will show on screen a message like "checking root status"
Launch mtk uncle and enter engineer mode.
Go to log and debugging tab ans select user2root
Select Root.
Now kingosoft will tell you that root is succesfull and restarts the phone.
That's that. Phone is rooted. For recovery see the posts 22 and 24 from Vampirefo who did the real hard work in creating 2 flavours of recovery. [emoji106][emoji106]
Non linux users can also flash the img through MTK uncle from sdcard if that doesn't work. See post 40 for flashing recovery via SP tools
The phone runs smooth on what seems to be Yun Os aka Aliyun. Gapps and all android functionalities are working well. At first it seemed that the WIFI reception was poor but with an OTA update seems this has been fixed.
Only trouble I have is getting a GPS fix. It does see 11-13 sattelites but I'm unable to get a proper fix on it. Also the EPO function is not acessible from 4.4.2 . so now with root I'm trying to inject the GPS.CONF file into system/etc and see if it gets a fix or not.
For the time I've been playing around with it... it seems a pretty decent phone with a good response for a reasonable price.

I Downloaded from kingosoft the sony bootloader unlocker.
It puts the phone in fastboot mode and then it hangs. I unplugged my phone, switch it off (keep the unlocker running) and manually booted into fastboot (vol up+power) the bootloader unlocker then proceeded untill finished.
Next I installed this root tool and started it while the phone was still in the fastboot mode. after a couple of restarts it says checking for Root, then I decided to start MTK uncle tools and scroll to "log and debugging" and select User2Root. then clicked Root and all of a sudden the phone was sucessfully rooted.. Smiling Smiling I don't know what exactly sparked the root access but It's rooted and works!

Yes mine is rooted also, Similar to the way you rooted yours.
I used Linux and wine to run the bootloader tool from there, I had to use another tool to get temp root, then I pushed su and set permissions.
The bootloader tool you used works via wine but the root tool doesn't.

So we can carefully state that the (accidental) rooting method works.
Btw. I figured out that /system is ro and not rw
Also with adbd insecure it remains ro. Means it has to be scripted to rw at every boot or.... Can try to run framaroot exploit.
System is supposed to be ro this is normal, to get rw add busybox and then remount rw.
Also you can edit the boot.img and make a insecure boot.img and flash, I have done this myself, this enables adb remount, you can add a script to /system/xbin, to force rw or ro.
I wouldn't want rw all this time, as this can cause instability use ro until you need rw, es filemanger with root also allows you to mount system rw as needed.

Facebook though can't be moved to SD card.

I have been able to hack through recovery, I now have root in recovery mode, so can do backups and restore, dual boot and should be able to increase the size of data partition.

Below shows data is now 4GB, as I am running data from sdcard, I can of course make data any size I want, only limited by size of sdcard, I think this phone supports 64GB, so data could be 64GB.

No ideal what you are saying, Have you rooted your leagoo lead1? if so by what? what is VOcano? Post more details, you say you root but not done, what does that mean?
Hacking through the recovery is a bit out of my league.
Is there a tut how to do this on a windows machine?
Another way I could think of is to create an ext2 partition (with an external program) on the SD card and use link2SD to utilize that as internal memory.
But I'm open for smarter ways of doing so.

There isn't a tut for Linux, so I doubt there is one for Windows, hacking comes from one's mind, lol. If link2SD works for you that would be just fine.
My method requires pulling stock recovery from phone unpacking recovery, adding adb support adding busybox support repacking stock recovery then flash to phone.
From the repacked recovery, full access to phone is possible, dual booting, running from phone from sdcard, creating and restoring backups.

Things just got worse hehe.. Did the whole link2sd thing and linked a couple of apps and voila. playstore, facebook, whatsapp gone.. and nowhere to be found back........... doubting whether a factory reset would fix the thing? So in short.... nope.. link2SD does not work.

Yes the recovery can be flashed on another rooted tablet, but there is more to getting data on sdcard that just flashing a recovery.
I just now modified cwm recovery to work on leagoo lead1, cwm recovery is bigger than my packed stock recovery, but I am able to squeeze in it, lol.

[GUIDE] Modify your System partition WITHOUT Root

Intro
This is a guide for people who want to make some modifications to config files, or other files, on System partition but do not want to root their phone or install custom recovery in order to keep OTAs and some apps, which don't play nicely with rooted phones, working. Examples of those config mods could be changing DPI or changing volume levels etc, which you would only do once and forget about it.
While root allows you to do those kinds of changes from within android, this methods would require a PC.
If you are familiar with temporary booting into a custom recovery, skip to step 5.
The usual i am not responsible for any of your actions / bricked phones disclaimer applies.
Prerequisites
- A working adb / fastboot environment. Please use Android SDK, if you installed your adb and fastboot using other tools, things might not work, so please just install SDK, install Google USB Driver from SDK manager, install Platform-Tools from SDK manager (should be installed by default) and then add your sdk platform-tools path to your PATH environment variable to have it available in cmd in every path.
- Unlocked bootloader
- TWRP image for you phone (.img) https://twrp.me/devices/huaweinexus6p.html
Follow the [GUIDE] Unlock/Root/Flash for Nexus 6P for that.
Instructions
Here is an example of modifying DPI. I prefer build.prop method of modifying DPI because using the adb wm density command usually caused some issues for me, but modifying via build.prop didn't.
1 - With you phone ON, connect it to the PC and make sure adb is working by running

and making sure that device is listed
2 - Reboot into bootloader. and make sure fastboot is good to go too. Run commands one at a time:

fastboot devices
3 - Place your TWRP image file in some easily accessible folder, for the sake of this example i will use C:\Mods.
4 - Temporary boot into TWRP (we are not flashing it here at all).

fastboot boot c:\Mods\twrp-2.8.7.0-angler.img
Here is where things may not work. If you don't see your phone boot into TWRP then either your adb / fastboot environment not setup correctly (installed via a tool instead of SDK) or your img file is corrupt.
One thing that works for me when TWRP refuses to boot is to restart cmd and issue the command again this closes and reopens adb/fastboot daemon.
5 - Once TWRP is up on your phone it may display a warning saying "TWRP has detected an unmounted system partition". Swipe to allow modifications at the bottom. This screen may not come up at all.
6 - Go to Mount >>> Tick System >>> Make sure "Only Mount System Read Only" is unticked >>> Press Back button
7 - Back on your PC check if your device is listed

8 - Pull the file you need to modify from system partition to your PC. Please note the direction of the slashes:

9 - Now you should see build.prop in your c:\Mods folder. Use Notepad++ or something like that to edit the file. Find the line with lcd_density= and change it's value to whatever you need and save the file.
10 - Push the file back to your phone:

12 - Profit.
Hope this will help anyone who is looking to do some mods without installing custom recovery and rooting your phone.

Works are per OP's original post, tested and boosted the headphone volume without a problem.
Headphone path is /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml
So as per OP's example to pull: adb pull /system/etc/mixer_paths.xml c:/Mods
push: adb push c:/Mods/mixer_paths.xml /system/etc
I'm using the OP's "Mods" folder to demonstrate the file path but this may vary on your PC.

You can certainly push the files to system partition and they will retain there after reboot. So if you know which files have to be pushed for SuperSU then give that a go. It shouldn't break anything.
I haven't tried pushing SuperSU files to system partition before so I can't guarantee that OTAs will work after this. The only way to find out is to try it i guess...

not sure if it's allowed or not.. but with this can i push hosts file onto the phone as well for ad-blocking...?????
I will say thanks now and try it later. These are the type of tweaks I would like to make to my phone. Do you know if changing the DPI cause any stock applications to show up broken like they do on the Samsung phones?

Can you run nandroids backups from TWRP by just booting into it?
okay so after i did this i get the following during boot up
"Your device is corrupt. It can't be trusted and may not work properly". Does this mean i will not get Securty Updates any more? I saw i had an update before i performed this however, now i do not see that update notifications any more.

I got this too when I flashed MOAB via adb sideload. I'm just wondering if the same warning appears with the adb push method. Also, the file's permissions don't need to be set after adb push?
My main concern is if Android Pay still works with the red triangle warning. Anyone?
FYI Flashing back to stock is no issue for me.

I think if you get the latest TWRP which supports decryption of data partition (where all your stuff is) you should be able to back it up.
Edit: backup works on nexus 5 with temporary TWRP boot. Sorry I'm still waiting for my 6p to arrive.

Thanks for trying it out! Sometimes OTA notifications take a little while to come up after reboot. But based on the warning Im afraid that they might be disabled now. It looks like it runs some sort of a check on the system partition to verify its legitimacy. So modifying files would be fine on it using this method but looks like adding them won't work.
TWRP just released their recovery with decryption support so you can just follow the standard procedure or just temporary booting into TWRP and rooting from there which works as well.

On your Nexus5 I assume you are also unrooted? And have you tried a Nandroid restore, booted TWRP, no root?

Thanks a lot for that. I didn't unlock the bootloader. Ugh. Time to start over. To me nandroids alone make it worth the effort.

Root... but not root?

Hi everyone. I have a tablet from a famous argentinian whose devices quality is not the best (Noblex). This tablet has an Intel redhookbay SoC (x86). I tried to root it with Framaroot with no success. I also tried with apps like Kingo Root and Kingroot (disgusting, but I had to try them to see if they worked). Nothing worked. So I looked for a custom recovery and I found this thread which helps redhookbay users having a temp recovery like "above" the fastboot menu. In my case, CWM didn't work because power button selected the recovery item, but also fastboot menu item, so it always rebooted. TWRP didn't work either because touchscreen doesn't seem to work when I choose it. So and idea came to my mind: I could make an OpenRecoveryScript to make a backup and flash SuperSU.
I used adb shell to see if I could write a file in cache partition without being root. Of course, it didn't work, but then I typed "su" because it came to my mind, and boom! I was root, and even without any prompt that asked me if I wanted to grant root access for adb. So I thought "great! I'll remount partitions as rw and update the binaries to SuperSU ones". But, I had a little problem called Operation not permitted. Yup, I couldn't remount because I'm not allowed.
So, what can I do in order to root this thing? I read something about adbd Insecure, but I don't have any app that manages root to use this.
I don't know what to do, please help me.

Not sure my question in subject is clear, so here's the thing...
I have dual-boot tablet with Android 5.0.1 and Windows 10 installed, and the model is Onda V80 Plus (32GB), if that matters at all.
I'm really having hard time rooting this device using standard methods (even with much of background knowledge and experience), so I was about to take a different route.
I installed Paragon ExtFS windows app which gives me read/write access to /system and /data android partitions (which have ext4 filesystem).
I was wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to gain root access in Android just by copying some files and changing some permissions or whatever from within Windows OS?
Basically, for those not familiar with ExtFS app, I can assign a drive letter to /system and /data partitions, and do whatever I want with them just like with any other drive or volume.
I'm aware that modifying ext4 partitions can render my Android OS unbootable, but I have a backup and would like to try it anyway as this is my last option.
When I look into SuperSU.zip file (which I always flashed through CWM/TWRP recovery to gain root access), I see many files which some lengthy script is copying all around, so I stopped after analyzing about hundred lines of code lol.
I really didn't find any method like this on the internet, so I wonder if that's even possible, and if it is, how would I go about it?

I really didn't find any method like this on the internet, so I wonder if that's even possible, and if it is, how would I go about it?

Root needs a custom kernel. Not something you are gonna do with a Windows setup the way you have it. Also you will most likely not find anything as that is most likely not an official version of Android as Google doesn't allow dual booting.
Thanks for a reply. But I don't see what does custom kernel have to do with what I try to achieve? If I could, in my Windows environment, replicate the modifications that script inside SuperSU zip does to /system partition, I should gain root access, right? In theory that is, since I'm aware lots of things can go wrong. I was hoping someone could explain a bit what SuperSU script is doing when run inside custom recovery, so I try to do the same thing. Again, if it's possible, and if it's worth the time spent. But I have time, and I'm always willing to learn something new.

what su is doing is pulls the kernel and patches it. root access is defined in the kernel. what itnis doing in system is flashimg just the apk
Ok, I see. So if I ask someone who rooted the same model successfully to send me patched kernel, I could easily flash it in fastboot mode (my bootloader is unlocked). So only thing left to do would be to copy apk inside /system/app, and cross my fingers? I'll post my findings if I manage to do something worth writing about. Thanks.
I have same problem with you. I can't root my Onda V80 plus. I unlock bootloader, flash recovery for my device. Then, i put it into recovery mode and install supersu.zip over recovery. When i reboot this onda, it has stopped in onda logo.

I managed to root my Onda few days after my last post, but forgot to post my findings, sorry. I didn't used any of my hacker's skills lol, but I researched a bit more and found out what I was missing. The same issue is with you, so you have to disable verity before flashing recovery by typing in these commands:

adb root
adb remount
adb disable-verity
adb reboot
After rebooting install supersu.zip, and the next boot won't hang on Onda logo anymore. Hope this helps you.
btw, note that not just any adb version has verity command line switch. You have to download newer adb version!

Basic root procedure would be: unlock BL -> disable verity -> flash (temp) recovery -> install SuperSU

Note the ReadMe.txt inside archive. It contains list of adb/fastboot commands needed to be executed in order to successfully root the device.

Ok, I get that boot-debug has been around for years... since android 10 for me, before that, it was variant=user, or variant=eng(ineer).
Strange how after I show boot-debug.img, magisk chooses this very path, but only after. Keeping in mind many people come here asking questions, and all those that know sit back and say nothing. Until they dont like what they see.
If you know better, and cant help, please keep your comments to yourself. This thread is intended to HELP, and is targetted toward those who CHOOSE to HELP because they CAN.
How I got su to work. Is this root? Now this is a good question. I dont want ANY overlaid system in my fone. I want to write to system like many others want to.
Not some google way of forcing us to use their mirrored online version of a locked filesystem already on my f'n.
Priority 1: I want to root my f'n without internet. Period. I do NOT want magisk using my credit. This proves we pay for magisk. I sometimes live so far from the world wide web, that offline is the only way to work. So I need to be able to root without google or THEIR employees offerings.
Priority 2: RW-able system.
So, I discover boot-debug.img for my f'n. Had it for a year, before I discovered it. Yeah, I discovered it after a year here asking, and getting NO replies that worked. Only after I'm vindicated to the naysayers 'thats been around forever...' yeah, try helping instead of useless comments.
In the end, I learned so much in such a short time. Constructive critiscism is NOT insulting. Magisk kills root in MY f'n. PERIOD. Camera does not work, location does not work, and I cant make/receive calls. But hey, it's an overlaid file system, of course it wont ALL work, I mean, I'd expect to lose a lil functionality, but disabling the GSI ability in dev options? I dont think so.. Worse, lack of adb or fastboot is produced in my f'n when using magisk, so tata magisk.
My logs actually explain all, so no more crappy adb logs. Yeah, I like simple adb, it works, or I'll MAKE it work.

Attempt every possible method of flashing magisk according to tut's, nada. 3 different paths lead me to...?
1: The note9 recovery I found, that lopstom was kind enough to twrp for me (well appreciated) is the KEY to gaining root on my ulefone armor x5 mt6765. It turns out that the note9 recovery is actually an android 9 os, with a 'super' .img - and being android 9, the bootloader I used is an OLD bootloader, in particular, the variant=eng type. Note this, this is key.
2: With the note9 flashed to recovery I can RW system in android 10 properly, but only in twrp.
3: Discover boot-debug.img - yup, it's not quite a variant=eng build, but it does work for the following:
Flash boot-debug.img. By doing so, you get the adb root command, and the disable-verity options, way better than wiping vbmeta, which contains the 'is it rw, or ro' of every file in every partition to be mounted in their own partitions, but what most dont know, is each file mounted in it's own mountpoint also has the information contained by vbmeta, but for each seperate file. So unless you add the /null (one for system, the other for vendor) after the disable-verity...
Nah, wipe most of your directory structure, then wonder why in a RW-able system, it still dont work. Because each file in it's own mountpoint knows if the system directory SHOULD be ro or rw. That's EACH and EVERY stock file in it's OWN mountpoint, has the RW or RO inf for the system & vendor directory, ie, is system RW?
Example: Camera wont work, get it?
In the end, this is how I went about installing su.
Flashed boot-debug.img did NOT flash recovery. Flashed meefik busybox-arm64 to f'n, but did NOT install it, instead, I opened it to install it, top left, saved the busybox-arm64 and then flashed twrp, and while there, flashed the system_rw, to defeat the system_RW saying not enough space, I chose 1024, did the copy over of super_fixed, then rebooted, enabled system, THEN flashed the busybox-arm64 from twrp, and rebooted.
Results: I copied the busybox-arm64 su, from xbin to system. In order to defeat the system_RW saying not enough space, I chose 1024. Round numbers matter with system_RW, same senario as memory, so use sizes equal to how memory works. ie, 32, 64, 128, and multiples of.
Look at the adb posts in my closed thread.
With Su installed, I have to type exit TWICE to exit. without su in system, exit only needs typed once.
Now here is why I continue. I found root, but dont have the experience, but it's like this:
See all those lovely new file that end in .cel? Mine says platinum. That means I AM ROOT. By swapping out .cel files, I have all the access magisk denies me. .cel files... get on it devs... swap them out, try try try... find what I found.
I dont actually need su, but i need it for some apps. What I have proven, is that SU does NOT kill android 10_Q.
variant=user or variant=eng, is NOW dependant on .cel files, like, say, boot-debug.cel.
Have a nice discovery... I hacked googles latest offering my-cel-f
Edit: Cel files are found in the bootloader, a zero byte file, the file NAME decides what the loader can or cant do, PERIOD.
New root tools only require swapping these out, as well as a few system edits when done.
Ok, slight mistake in spelling so I'll add the following for you to 'see'..

So it's not cel as I wrote in the first post, my point being just as valid.
Platinum clearly states there are more who's names I have yet to obtain...
Theoretically in my mind, if I swap the .cil file in the bootloader for say hypothetically:
engdebug_plat_sepolicy.cil... with the few edits seen in the android 10 notes I posted from china, the one where people say 'too much hassle' - I say, for them. Those notes show the rest of the cil files, so yeah, I got root OPTIONS to play with
