Question SIM 1 refusing to use 3G (no VoLTE available) - Sony Xperia 1 III

Had the phone a week and was connected to Vodafone AU, connects to 4G but no VoLTE so it drops to 3G when making/receiving calls.
Yesterday it started to refuse to drop to 3G for calls and remained on 4G, internet on 4G was working fine, but because it refused to drop to 3G I was not having any luck with calls, manually trying to force it on 3G just ended up with no reception and no connection. Did a whole bunch of trouble shooting and reset network settings, even factory reset the phone and tried a different SIM from another provider, no luck... same issue, will not drop to 3G for making/receiving calls.
Once I used sim SLOT 2, everything was back to normal, I could manually force it on 3G, when making calls it will go from 4G to 3G as before and all is well.
Is the phone faulty and I need to get it replaced? is there something I can do to get sim SLOT 1 back working again?

It's really a problem where you need to just try and see if you find a fix.
If your provider offer no VoLTE try to do a software repair, no factory reset from inside the phone but a software repair with xperia companion. that will not reset the software on your phone but will download a new copy of the firmware (same then make a firmware reset with itunes and recovery mode compared to factory reset from iOS on iphone)

Thanks, will try with Xperia companion and see if it fixes to he problem.

I have the Xperia 1 II and flashed SEA firmware and Volte works flawlessly.
If you can be bothered flash SEA firmware to see if it works

Root & enable VoLTE

I've seen a few people mention the X1 ii can get VoLTE after flashing another region. Sadly no one with a X1 iii in AUS has confirmed they are able to get it working with any reflashed ROMs.
FYI my original issue with the 3G was resolved by doing a firmware repair using the Xperia companion.

Ohh good the problem was resolved with a software repair. However with Optus network 3G will be turned off April 2022 which I think in that situation anyone using the Xperia on Optus network with no volte wouldn't be able to place calls.

Yeah I heard the same.
Glad i'm with Vodafone AU as they have said no plans yet to turn off 3G since they have so many customers still using.

I hope someone can verify by flashing SEA firmware if volte will work for you.
I only flashed SEA firmware for faster updates which also resulted in volte working.
It made the phone a better experience overall

1 How can i tell what ROM i have (SEA,US,RU,HK etc)
2 I read in another forum that flashing non native ROM will cause OTA updates to fail and I would need to manually update via Xperia Companion (this is all for Xperia 1 iii)

I can't remember off the top of my head where to check Firmware region however you should be able to Google it.
I have flashed mine close to year ago and have received every update since. OTA works flawless.
I don't know about the Xperia 1 III though

With the xperia 1 iii, if you flash different region it will not allow OTA. I use flasher to flash update manually and for me it's fine as I'm using SEA also for VOLTE.

Wooow that's interesting that it doesn't do OTA updates as don't see what the issue is. I flashed firmware on phone and after that didn't really have to do anything as updates came through OTA.
Now I'm hesitant in getting the Xperia 1 IV as it may not work if flashed. It's a gamble to get volte to work. Also I much prefer OTA updates.
Might consider S22 Ultra if it checks out good. Sony has to do something exceptional for me to consider it. Fix screen brightness, fix battery life, fix volte, fix WiFi calling etc.

All asian version have the same bands, it only differs on the config. Since malaysia local xperia are SEA, then just flash the firmware then it will work. If xperia is not available locally, it will not be supported unless you root your phone and enable it.

[Q] After Updating latest samsung update My phone is now 100% roaming ?

I have not moved or changed locations or anything but after updating the newest samsung firmware (on friday) my phone is now 100% of the time roaming. I've checked the network settings and it says Tmobile in there as it should (i'm on Tmobile in america with the i9300).
Is there something i did wrong? I updated it with Kies, what can i do to downgrade back to the old firmware if i get tired of this roaming business?
try changing your modem

I am not sure, but its funny my friend has the BLUE i9300 bought 3 weeks after mine, and he was not getting a notification of the update via kies either, but it did give it to me and my phone the exact day it was out (uk firmware).
about changing the modem, will I need to root for that? i prefer to run stock for now..
that's bizarre but it probably has something to do with the phone being an internation model with a uk csc, but i've used my S1 from the uk several times in the u.s. with t-mobile and never had that problem .....can only assume it is a bug

Yea becuase when the phone arrived it worked great (even had a minor firmware upgrade the day i opened which was like june 15th ish or a few days later) and still worked great, no Roaming at all, then with last weeks update now it roams
It's worth pointing out that changing the modem will not work as a valid solution in this case. If one uses a non-LFB modem with the LFB ROM, the mic doesn't get used. One would have to also go to an older rom in addition to a different modem.
I'm having the same exact issue.
Need a solution.
Tried a factory reset. No dice.
Hi guys,
Didn`t find answer for my questions, so decided to link myself to similar topic.
Since the SW update I have done today my phone doesn`t lock to a network
When I go to settings to find a carrier manually, It takes about 2 minutes to find 4-5 networks available around, I am picking o2 UK (as I have a contract with them) and it says : Registering to o2 UK which takes about 4 minutes. After this it says : Emergency calls only and there is no status bars at all.
Master reset didn`t help.
What steps should I take ?
For you reference :
- Phone took from CPW in UK as sim free
- SIM Card used is from o2 UK (contract)
- I don`t want to flash anything, I would like to stay to stock ROM (if possible)
UPDATE : Chosen `Select Automaticly` allowed the phone to find signal, could make a call etc, but after 30 minutes lost signal again....

on AT&T / same firmware, no roaming issues.
Any fixes for this issue?

U Using it in india? Which network u using?
Any updates?
I did find out that the CSC that was applied by default was KOR. I went in and changed this to BTU using *#272*imei#, but still did not solve the issue.
Wondering if a repartition would help?

If u do not wish to root then your only option is to take it back to the store, so they can fix, u bought the best smart phone available on the market and u can't make phone calls or browse internet(without wifi).
To my understanding, still no resolution on this..
My friends phone after being updated (he just got his first update after having the phone a month) is now roaming as well.. So this is definately something either with our network (t-mobile) or the recent updates.
I've just started living with it, but it sucks becuase it does silly things like makes me click 'download image' when someone sends me a picture message in text...
with the few bugs could be ironed out of this phone kinda frustrating.
I do have similar problems since I installed an update 2 weeks ago. at home the phone says it is roaming at work approx 6 miles away and with a different station I am connecting to it is fine.

Thats interesting, no matter where I go i get roaming. Though a few times I have gotten the 'roaming' warning popped up, so maybe i went out of roaming and didnt know it? I'll keep a closer eye on it.
It is very frustrating and annoying. I've called T-Mobile and they said they would open a case with Samsung. If you guys could call too, we might get a fix.
I really suspect it is something in the CSC. Maybe if we could get the T Mobile SIII CSC and apply it?

My suspicion is wrong. I pulled the TMB CSC from a T999 ROM and manually copied it to /system/csc/TMB, then used the CSC Selector App to change to TMB.
No dice. Still in Roaming.

[Q] LTE not working on Z2?

So around 3 weeks ago I got a brand new unlocked Z2 D6503. As it says, it supports LTE and the bands it support are available and broadcasted here in KSA.
I'm on the operator Zain KSA and when I manually search for mobile networks, I do see the LTE network by the operator but whenever I select it, it doesn't register on it.
I've tried everything from calling/visiting the network operator from changing the SIM and getting a new one.
The FW I have is .314
Anyone has any experience or any idea? Do I need to reflash the FW?
May be enter the correct APN settings for your carrier?
Sent from my One using Tapatalk
Firstly, are you on an LTE plan? For Singapore, we need to sign up to an LTE plan and the operator has to do the necessary activation, before we can register on the LTE network.

That's the thing, I already had 4G activated, and I specially got it deactivated and activated again on this handset. 4G coverage is in my area, each and everything is in optimal condition. The network operator says everything is also fine at their end...

Yup everything is configured correctly
I can confirm that it is the handset that is not registering LTE.
I just popped in a working LTE SIM which has full coverage in my area and Z2 fails to register it...
Well I can't say much about LTE since I am on 3G data plan so can't use it. But the funny thing happened that I was on Edge connection, even tho I was in city centre and I could use 3G, it was full. So went into phone options and changed into 3G only and then Z2 has magically seen the better connection. Try to do that for LTE, maybe it will work. Otherwise I would flash other firmware or repair with PCC.

Okay so actually solved the issue.
I reinstalled/repaired the FW using Sony PC Companion and now LTE works perfectly. But the side effect? I heard that 4.4.2 causes many bugs and seems like I just got the phone sluggish one.
Phone feels sluggish in different parts as well as when I tap the recent icons button. Also the animation for WiFi turning on and off is not there anymore...
I don't know what's happening anymore....:/
I too have a bit of a lag when I hit recents menu button. I guess it's just the way Z2 is now and we have to wait for new firmwares, hopefully with less bugs, to come.
Happy for you that you fixed the problem with LTE

Sad how the animations worked and there was no lag but sadly no LTE functionality. Such bad FW release.
And yeah atleast I fixed the LTE issue as I really can't stand slow internet and H+ seems pretty slow to me.

Cameras Not Working Android 10

I am experiencing a new problem that may be hardware related given my results but this is phone is brand new and has always been very protected so it seems unlikely but I still have to ask if anyone else is suffering from the same issue.
I have the j9110 with dual-sim functionality that I had originally flashed to the United States j8170 software to for VoLTE and recently accepted the Android 10 update for the j8170 model. Initially the phone seemed fine and worked fairly well until today when I found that Snapchat could not launch the camera. Further testing concluded that the stock camera app and the CinemaPro app were not displaying any preview either. On the off chance the stock app launched, which it sometimes did not - it displayed a restart app/phone or an unknown error message, the 1x and 2x preview were extremely laggy (around 5-10fps) while the selfie camera and the wide angle lens worked okay. None of the apps allowed pictures or videos to be recorded.
From this I then did a factory reset which did nothing, I then flashed the Android 9 j8170 software which also displayed the same problem, and then I finally flashed the Android 10 j9110 software and got the same result. I will try the Xperia Companion repair software next and I have already sent Sony support an email detailing my issues. Would any of you have any other suggestions that are software related to help with my situation?

It did not work, same issues persist after the software repair. I tested j9150 rom for the Xperia 1 Professional and the cameras worked flawlessly on that but that rom is Android 9, not 10. It also supports VoLTE too but the rom does not have the U.S. bands enabled. I may have to talk to sony support after all :/
What did you flash with? Newflasher?
Yes, downloaded all the roms from XperiFirm.
Bootloader still locked?
Yes but the problem has gotten worse - the rear cameras won't launch at all and the camera applications insta-crash or display the error messages. This leads me to believe my suspicions of a faulty camera module to increase.
You may be right but usually it is all or none and yours has worked in the past. You dumped data and cache on both camera and Cinema Pro?

if you have a j9110 flashed only firmwaren j9110, using the firmware of other model you risk completely destroying the smartphone by and at the same time canceled the warranty. there are official firmware Android 10 j9110 why did you flash another model?

I dumped the cache on both, I contacted Sony and they will accept the European warranty so I am shipping it to them - no software fix will help with this as Sony support could not help either.

When the Xperia 1 was released, it came with Android 9 and VoLTE was only enabled for the j8110 model (dumb af). For me to able to reasonably use the j9110 model in the United States then VoLTE is required (these bands are prevalent in the US) and this required me to flash the j8110 model software. As these are official Sony ROMS, the warranty is still very valid. Flashing software between models is not a new occurrence, as since the Xperia Z5 Premium you had to flash the United States software on the international dual-sim models for VoLTE and US band access. This was also the case for XZ Premium as well, and in my experience with these previous phones has told me Sony has never blocked warranty based on this. The hardware is the exact same minus the option for dual-sim functionality so the software between the models should, in-theory, work the same as well.
Here is a link of many others flashing the j8110 software on the j9110 with little no issues:

Thanks for trying! And yea thankfully they agreed to the warranty, I just hope the damage is just a loose connection or something, as usually with parts replacement it would take longer and I may need to pay for some of them.

Yes, the VoLTE in the United States has different bands associated with each service provider. I currently am using T-Mobile and they have VoLTE on Band 16(?) which the j9110 does not support as stock for VoLTE as far as I know.

anyone got a quick fix?
I'm not sure but J9110 Customized SEA firmware might help you.
Regarding the repair using Xperia Companion it didn't move past few steps and error was displayed for me about model when I tried J9150 model. I flashed J9150 but was still displaying J9110 . Xperia Companion was weird.
I suggest you try J9110 SEA and then send to repair center if you can. Else they will still give you J9110 because you have that in receipt.

Question Anyone tried to flash XQ-BC72 with XQ-BC62 (US Version) firmware?

Just got my Xperia 1 III (XQ-BC72) couple days ago, flashed SEA firmware with no problems so far. Except too bad it doesn't support Volte in Canada, which used to be fine on my previous Xperia 1 J9110 with SEA firmware as well.
I was wandering is that possible to flash it with US firmware to unlock that, plus features like more 5G bands support?
Anything helpful would be appreciated.

I flashed US firmware yesterday but it appears that it still wont work with Verizon even though all the 4G bands are there. I could care less about 5G where I live. I have CMDA less feature activated too but still no go. Worked fine on the HK version of Xperia 5 II so I though I would be OK on this one as well.
@i7killpii you are unlikely to get VoLTE to work (aside from maybe on T-Mobile). Its possible that a Canadian provider may also allow it but I doubt it. You also wont get access to more bands just by switching firmware. Whatever bands came with the phone is all you have access too.
@charlatan01 you can follow the directions here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/guide-flashing-xq-at51-firmware-on-xq-at52-device.4147027/
These are for the Xperia 1 II but its the same process for the 1 III as well. If you use Verizon and somehow figure out to make it work, let me know. Please note, flashing firmware will erase everything. Also I am not responsible for any bricking or issues you may get into. It worked for me on the first try.
I flashed my XQ-BC72 using XQ-BC62 rom before. I cannot afford 5G plan so I didn't try. About VoLTE, I am using Fido and the carrier services are not available (including VoWiFi, VoLTE, showing 4G instead of LTE, etc.). Also I got a lot of problems such as LTE connection disconnection about every 30 seconds. So I flashed it back to TW rom. Still all carrier services are not available but at least the LTE is functioning.
I've searched about the carrier services issues. It seems it's because the carrier isn't cooperating with Google so no carrier configuration is available (I'm not sure because fido has android phones on their website).

Thanks for the follow-up. I managed to cancel my order for the Asia version and am going to snag the NA version when I can.
try only flashing /OEM partition with the OEM files of the firmware from your area.
Usually that brings VoLTE functionality and stuff

I called Verizon and got them to add the IMEI to my phone line along with CMDA-less feature. It actually worked. I can make phone calls and send/receive texts so it appears its possible to get Verizon to work on Asian model. However, VoLTE is a different story. I dont think I will get that work.

General USA version XQ-CT62 received today!!

I just received my Xperia 1 IV USA version today from FocusCamera.com today, I was a little skeptical if it was even the USA version, since it wasn`t shipping from Sony until next week, I originally had pre-ordered on Sony website, then with a little looking around I had found the USA version on ebay in-stock, then I saw the seller name and went to there website yesterday and verified with there live chat that in fact it was in stock and would ship, so I ordered and use next day air shipping, everything works flawless and actually has the 5G bands like my Pixel 6 Pro, so I can get proper 5g speeds, on Band N71, That was missing from the Global version I was using 2 weeks ago, now I need the Firmware from Sony so I can root. I`m a happy camper
Congratulations
What carrier are you using it on?

yeah I had t-mobile then I switched to GoogleFi last month, and wifi calling works perfect, inside my work place service from all carriers suck, since it big steel building, but my Xperia 1 IV will say emergency calls only, but I can receive calls and make calls and receive text, ad everything just like had full bars of carrier service.
I guess you were not able to root it?
To know exactly how capable the device is then its necessary take modem logs and let smart people parse it.

Unfortunately not, so this will be going back for refund, I can`t justify spending 1600.00 on phone and not able to root and do with it what I want with it, but there`s always the global version I could go back too, I`m going return it and wait and see if Sony does eventually allow it to unlock the bootloader, until then I`ll just use my Pixel 6 pro for now.
Can you please let me know if :
a. the NA model has Dual SIM support ?
b. Face unlock works (was told the fingerprint scanner is a bit finicky)

a. there is dual sim support, but you will lose the micosd card, because Sim 2 uses the microsd slot
b. no face unlock and both global and USA version`s the fingerprint readers worked perfect.
Is the 5G SA standalone or NSA only?
Should be both on all versions, USA model difference is mmWave support.
Would also like to know if they finally enabled 5G SA on T-Mobile with this year models.

You can know that without buying phone. Download the firmware with xperifirm, extract modem.img and use ELFextract to extract your hw variants .mbn file. This will reveal the carrier/band policy files (in policyman folder) which live in the modem. There you can see which bands are enabled for specific operators and if they are enabled for SA and NSA.

Thanks for the tip. I got as far as extracting mbn files. I can't seem to find ELFextract tool you've mentioned. I'm assuming this is different than readelf utility.

Thank you for confirming that Google fi does utilize Wi-Fi calling on the Xperia 1 IV.
