Question for the brain trust. Is there an idiots guide to rooting the p6? I have been reading through the post here and I am totally lost and confused.

You can use this from Pixel 6 Pro forum.
Thread '[Pixel 6 Pro] Easy STEP BY STEP Unlock-Root' https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/pixel-6-pro-easy-step-by-step-unlock-root.4361847/
Make sure you substitute 'raven' with 'oriole' when installing anything.

I do appreciate it. I had to wipe so I'm letting it rebuild as I make some lunch then going to give it another go. I actually need root for call recording because of my ex and my kids (it's a mess) so I'll get it done.

I downloaded the zip, but stopped there. I've never messed with a system dump before, so I didn't know what direction to move in. I don't have time to mess with it now. It's standard fare...system.img, boot.img, radio.img....etc...
I'll try and get to it tonight.

HTC Desire X: QuickRoot?

Same tool. Though I personally would recommend using this tool instead, as it's actually built for and confirmed to be working on the Desire X.
You could also follow this tutorial by nloooo which will actually help you learn something about your phone and how it works as you root it step-by-step.

EDIT: Yes I know the tutorial by nloooo but knowing that there are some tools that can help me, I would rather use them... But still it's good to know how to "root" manually.

It has worked for many people. A few people had problems mostly to do with not having installed the HTC drivers properly on their machine, but you can read through the forum thread and see for yourself what issues people faced. I think the general experience has been very positive.

Can't boot --- *** please *** help ***

after my phone had lost 4G.. I thought maybe a reset would fix it.. when I realized I had to change the APN, that worked.. but when I went to put Xposed back on, it kept failing saying it couldn't write to the SD Card.. so I went back and re-flashed the rom.. no luck. so then I was going to go back stock and restart..
but now every firmware I flash, it will get stuck in a bootloop... if anyone can help me.. please let me know what to do.. Thank you.
well just let everyone know i was able to finally fix my Note II.. just had to download the right firmware.. did go with ND7 so now have a locked bootloader.. but at least i still have root!

So shall I edit build.prop to make it support my device and test it?

It's not that simple. You'll need to learn a lot about coding in order to be anywhere close to doing it. It's not copy pasting stuff here and there or installing from a backup.

Since you're a noob, I can't think of anything easier than this for you
Go through the ports which are already available (like Mi A2) (must be xiaomi)
See what files the dev used to get the camera working on non-miui roms
To give you rough idea there will be xiaomi framework , some xmls, libs etc.
Try replicating those exact files from your stock firmware and create a flashable zip or directly paste em into root
Also try contacting the dev of that camera and see if he agrees to help you out !
Ask him if you face any trouble throughout.
Ignore people who are discouraging,
Today a noob, tomorrow a pro
Thanks a lot. I trialed and error-ed and came to same method you mentioned below.
