I was able to flash my XQ-BC62 (US) model with the XQ-BC42 (JP) firmware using newflasher. Everything seems to work OK except the mobile radio. The radio is completely disabled (as reported by *#*#4636#*#* status screens), not just unable to connect. The hardware is still fine since flashing back to XQ-BC62 firmware gets a signal again.
Unfortunately I need to use XQ-BC42 as the other firmware images are missing the VoLTE support for my JP carrier and it fails to provision. At best I can force it into data only mode by setting radio to LTE only. The carrier does not support 3G at all.
Extra steps I tried:
- Perform factory reset after flashing
- Swap out the files for the modem firmware from the US firmware and reflash
Has anyone had luck with this, or are there any additional steps I might need to try?
This phone keeps getting worse. I literally bought it to use in the US and Japan. Sony support said it is officially unsupported by all US telcos. No SA 5G, no VoNR, no VoWiFi. Now I hear that it doesn't work in Japan?!
I already know it's close to useless in French Polynesia despite having all the right radio bands.
You can try swapping both OEM-xxx.sin files from the XQ-BC42 firmware folder into the XQ-BC62 firmware folder and flash there XQ-BC62 firmware with that, then you should be able to get VoLTE and modem working at the same time.
If that doesn't work, there are other methods but they will require root access.

Might you elabortate a bit on this?
So which modell? which provider? comeing form a country where all of these 5G related features are just in development this would be nice to get some further informations on this topic.
VoWiFi is highly likely a provider "problem" - as we have another thread here where these "offical support" statements are at least highly questionable, as we have multiple users here using VoWiFi.

Did you try to get in contact with the japanese carrier asking if they are supporting VoLTE for devices from other markets?
Maybe the easiest way would to switch your carrier at all.
If you are willing to dig around more you could try something like this

No, they don't support overseas models. I don't know if it's ignorance around the security or an attempt to prop up their own phone sales. Both are honestly believable over here.
This is the only reasonably priced major carrier plan with unlimited international roaming included (ahamo from NTT Docomo). Not being able to use the 1 iii sucks but I'll just write the 1 iii off if it can't be fixed and continue using my JP variant 1 ii.

Why did you get yourself the "American" Variant? Docomo has, as well as softbank, there own supported devices. Kind of similar to TMobile US. Sounds you are spending most of the time in japan. I know that the Docomo version isn't so well supported regarding updates though ...

I have the US model - the same as this thread topic.
It's Sony tech support themselves that told me that there is no carrier support for the US model in the US. It was such an incredible conversation that I saved it. An excerpt:

Don't repeat Sony's claim about 5G being in development. T-Mobile has been running SA 5G where I live for nearly 2 years. I've done side-by-side comparisons between an older phone with SA 5G and my Xperia by swapping the SIM. The XPeria has a lot of "no service" problems because it's using SA 5G channel aggregations without having SA 5G. There's another thread on this - Sony has explicitly disabled SA 5G on all US NR bands. https://cacombos.com/device/XQ-BC62
The Sony phone was unstable roaming in PF and could not see several 3G, LTE, and 5G bands that were available to it. Again, an older phone worked better. I used a much more modern coverage map than your 2017 document.
I haven't been to Japan with this my Xperia yet due to COVID restrictions, but I normally spend ~2 weeks a year there. I know my old phone works well there so I'm going to be mad if a new Xperia is stuck looking for old 3G cells that only exist in subways.
I have an XQ-BC42 that I'm using in Europe with 5G working (which isn't supported officially).
All I had to do was flash the XQ-BC42 firmware with the following 3 files replaced by their equivalents from the XQ-BC52 firmware:
* modem_X-FLASH-ALL-4BA8.sin
* modemst1_X-FLASH-ALL-4BA8.sin
* modemst1_X-FLASH-ALL-4BA8.sin
So in your case you just have to take the 3 files above from the XQ-BC42 firmware and combine them with everything else from XQ-BC62 firmware and flash that.
From what I've gathered, assuming your phone has XQ-BC62 firmware on it already, it might only be necessary to flash the XQ-BC42 modem files and nothing else, but I haven't tested this.
I'm assuming you can swap other files too but what definitely didn't work for me was the oem .sin files from another model's firmware. I don't know if there's something incompatible about the XQ-BC42 compared with other models but using non-XQ-BC42 oem .sin files disabled my radio completely.

no, i am not saying it is under development. The standards are there. How ever - in different regions some of the 5g is still not rolled out / will never been seen (mmWave,SA 5G - at least for private customers).
Well i read the message you quoted a bit different - and i would love to know what other carriers have to say about that.
I personally would find it completly unlogic to sell a device like the Pro, which is said in your excerpt, to have 5G support on Verizon - but then sell the 5G capable phones which have this deactivated at all.

Might be, that t-mobile is using some more advanced features. how ever: here where i live most phones up to now don't support 5G SA, at least thats what the carriers say, as there are updates needed to make this work. So we will see here some selected phones using 5G SA - as the providers are working together with SOME of the major OEMs.
You can know ask who is responsible for supporting 5G SA or providing updates... As much as i got from t-mobile usa, they where always not really open to devices, which they don't sell directly ....

I happened to be in the US at the time to pre-order and it wasn't clear that Sony would release an unlocked dual-SIM model for the JP market. I checked the radio bands before purchasing but all of this client provisioning stuff is new to me. Seems like all these laws were made to force carriers to unlock their phones / allow any standards compliant phone on their networks, and then they find this loophole with provisioning that requires more than just a SIM card...

Unfortunately this didn't work. But I did learn that the radio problem isn't an issue with the firmware itself.
Immediately after flashing the mobile radio was OK and I could use it with my alternate SIM card. As soon as I inserted the JP SIM card it triggered OMA client provisioning and killed the radio. After this happened not even the US SIM card would work anymore, and any radio related configurations can no longer be changed.
My hypotheses at this point are either (a) the client provisioning step found something off with my phone and forced it to lock down (not sure if client provisioning has the authority to do this though), (b) the client provisioning is interacting with the modem firmware in a JP-specific way and the US modem firmware is borked by this.

Other than the issue after provisioning the OEM files from the JP model did work for me. If (b) is true then flashing both the oem and modem files might be a solution. I'll give that a try!

Have you tried with only the modem files taken from the XQ-BC42 firmware? Might be worth a shot.
Also, it might be worth asking on the 5ch thread if you speak Japanese.

I spent a few more days trying various combinations of flashing, factory resets, etc. and finally have it working. I don't know if this is the only way to achieve this, but I can share the sequence I did most recently. This was inspired by the discussions in that 5ch thread - thanks for the link!
1. Install JP variant ROM with full factory reset.
2. Install the JP SIM card and wait for provisioning to finish. The radio stops working at this point.
3. Create and flash a hybrid ROM, using the modem*.sin files from the JP variant and everything else from the original (US) variant. Do NOT factory reset.
4. Set the correct APN (sp-mode.net for ドコモ).
After this both the JP and US SIM cards are working.

So recently i bought this international unlocked Galaxy S9+ (SM-965F/DS Exynos processor) off Amazon and it's great, everything is fine with the one major exception being that at home my signal is pretty poor and i get extremely delayed text messages coming in and calls taking forever to dial out or failing to connect. Not a problem, i'll turn on Wi-Fi calling, right? Wrong, option isn't available, some detail: I'm in the US on T-Mobile, updated to the latest Pie OS update, i'm very tech-capable and used to do tier 2 tech support for Verizon. Long story short, I've tried everything in the book including FDR and fresh setup as well as clearing system cache etc. and it's looking like the ONLY solution to get Wi-Fi calling (and subsequently VoLTE that i didn't realize wasn't enabled until researching and checking myself) enabled is to flash the ROM with a T-Mobile OS. Unfortunately i'm coming up negative trying to find the firmware for this phone. Plenty of resources out there for the SM-965U(Snapdragon), but none for the SM-965F(Exynos) as of yet as far as i can tell (and before any ignorance jumps in here as i've seen on other threads, NO the SM-965U software will NOT work on this model phone as it runs a different processor, non-Snapdragon Exynos chipset)
So, that all being said, is anyone out there working on a fix for this, is it likely i'll ever get a fix for this, and/or is the fix already available and I've just completely missed it? Any information or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.

I'm currently researching the very same issue... So far i hypothesize , with no knowledge, that if it is rooted, you can then change the csc settings and configure it for TMO, thus enabling WiFi calling. If someone can confirm, that'd be great, otherwise i'm trudging slowly to verify.

Well i looked at this and it looks like a non-stock rom i'm sure wrought with problems that unfortunately is not helpful. My goal here is to have my phone work and continue to get standard updates with original and licensed (more or less) software and have it actually work. I'm not interested in a full OS replacement pre-loaded with a bunch of adblockers and other crap the designer thought would be useful, just want my standard features enabled and nothing else to change if at all possible. Also, if you believe my statement here is in error please explain, your one line really isn't very helpful, and nowhere on their website is there any description as to what tekhd detonator does / is supposed to do / what it will break. I'm certainly not risking bricking my phone when their own website says under all of its S9+ related material that it's for Snapdragon which the variant i have again doesn't use Snapdragon.

This is going to be a hassle trust me. even with the Snapdragon models from different CSCs VoLTE and Wifi Calling do not carry over. An ATT 965U would have to be reflashed with the TMobile CSC and USERDATA files to get access to TMobile features. U are trying to do this with an Exynos model. I think you would have to root and install a custom firmware that has the TMobile USERDATA embedded.

You can flash the G965U onto the G965U1 and vice versa. It's been well documented that this will let us go from one carrier firmware to another as well as let us have the unbranded carrier firmware. The only catch to this is the bootloader version of the firmware your wanting to flash. The firmware one wishes to flash must have a bootloader version equal too (or greater then) what is currently on the phone.
If your trying to ask about flashing the U1 onto an exynos variant then the answer is definitely no. You can't flash firmware from a different model onto a different model.
Just got my Xperia 1 III (XQ-BC72) couple days ago, flashed SEA firmware with no problems so far. Except too bad it doesn't support Volte in Canada, which used to be fine on my previous Xperia 1 J9110 with SEA firmware as well.

I flashed US firmware yesterday but it appears that it still wont work with Verizon even though all the 4G bands are there. I could care less about 5G where I live. I have CMDA less feature activated too but still no go. Worked fine on the HK version of Xperia 5 II so I though I would be OK on this one as well.
@i7killpii you are unlikely to get VoLTE to work (aside from maybe on T-Mobile). Its possible that a Canadian provider may also allow it but I doubt it. You also wont get access to more bands just by switching firmware. Whatever bands came with the phone is all you have access too.

These are for the Xperia 1 II but its the same process for the 1 III as well. If you use Verizon and somehow figure out to make it work, let me know. Please note, flashing firmware will erase everything. Also I am not responsible for any bricking or issues you may get into. It worked for me on the first try.
I flashed my XQ-BC72 using XQ-BC62 rom before. I cannot afford 5G plan so I didn't try. About VoLTE, I am using Fido and the carrier services are not available (including VoWiFi, VoLTE, showing 4G instead of LTE, etc.). Also I got a lot of problems such as LTE connection disconnection about every 30 seconds. So I flashed it back to TW rom. Still all carrier services are not available but at least the LTE is functioning.
I've searched about the carrier services issues. It seems it's because the carrier isn't cooperating with Google so no carrier configuration is available (I'm not sure because fido has android phones on their website).

@i7killpii you are unlikely to get VoLTE to work (aside from maybe on T-Mobile). Its possible that a Canadian provider may also allow it but I doubt it. You also wont get access to more bands just by switching firmware. Whatever bands came with the phone is all you have access too.

These are for the Xperia 1 II but its the same process for the 1 III as well. If you use Verizon and somehow figure out to make it work, let me know. Thanks for the follow-up. I managed to cancel my order for the Asia version and am going to snag the NA version when I can.
try only flashing /OEM partition with the OEM files of the firmware from your area.
Usually that brings VoLTE functionality and stuff

I called Verizon and got them to add the IMEI to my phone line along with CMDA-less feature. It actually worked. I can make phone calls and send/receive texts so it appears its possible to get Verizon to work on Asian model. However, VoLTE is a different story. I dont think I will get that work.

Just a quick confirmation request. I bought a Verizon V60 and have been extremely pleased with it, save for the fact that after following every available guide and tip I was unable to get VoLTE or VoWiFi to work.
So...I bought another. T-mobile version. All of the options are there this time around, and I can enable VoLTE options in hidden menu and they stick.
Unfortunately, I am still met with "Error: ER05 "Invalid SIM card"" when I turn on wi-fi calling seemingly no matter what I do.
I am turning to the brains trust to confirm my suspicions. The V60 was never sold in Australia. There exists no V60 .mbn carrier config for the telstra network, and it seems this might be the key to getting both features to work.
The V50 WAS sold in Aus on Telstra. Is there no possible way to adapt an mbn file to bring requisite operator specific config to my V60? I realise it is a different chipset.
I see little point in pursuing this further with crossflashing etc if it is truly impossible. I suspect this may well be the case. Unfortunately both my home and office have near zero mobile coverage, so I am heavily reliant on VoWifi at the very least and I can't make it go.
Did you try unlocking the bootloader and then crossflashing your Verizon V60 with the T-mobile version?

However I've been reading confusing stuff about the V60 not working with VOLTE if you use a carrier not branded for the phone, which I assume could be fixed by flashing firmwares. And from what little I know, you need to make sure the phone is sim unlocked before crossflashing anything, and that, I don't know how to do (my phone seems to be sim locked to verizon).

I already have both a Verizon and T-Mobile version. I crossflashed the VZW one to EA to try it out but no dice.
Unfortunately I'm pretty sure my deduction is spot on - going through guides to gain voLTE and voWifi on unsupported devices, every single working solution relies on there being an appropriate firmware available with your local carrier config to extract an MBN, OR the manufacturer adding support themselves (like asus did for ROG Phone 5).
I have an Australian KDZ for the velvet. Extracting the modem from this and trying that MBN file is my last resort but I believe these things are device/ chipset specific - I don't believe there's a very high chance of success unless someone knows how to port/ convert the carrier config to another device.
I thought I'd done my research but sadly it looks like I'll have to sell both of these devices and move on. Major bummer because it ticks 100% of my other boxes - I bloody love the device! Seems so silly but I need wifi calling, it's essential - I live in the middle of nowhere.
I just received my Xperia 1 IV USA version today from FocusCamera.com today, I was a little skeptical if it was even the USA version, since it wasn`t shipping from Sony until next week, I originally had pre-ordered on Sony website, then with a little looking around I had found the USA version on ebay in-stock, then I saw the seller name and went to there website yesterday and verified with there live chat that in fact it was in stock and would ship, so I ordered and use next day air shipping, everything works flawless and actually has the 5G bands like my Pixel 6 Pro, so I can get proper 5g speeds, on Band N71, That was missing from the Global version I was using 2 weeks ago, now I need the Firmware from Sony so I can root. I`m a happy camper

yeah I had t-mobile then I switched to GoogleFi last month, and wifi calling works perfect, inside my work place service from all carriers suck, since it big steel building, but my Xperia 1 IV will say emergency calls only, but I can receive calls and make calls and receive text, ad everything just like had full bars of carrier service.
I guess you were not able to root it?
To know exactly how capable the device is then its necessary take modem logs and let smart people parse it.

Unfortunately not, so this will be going back for refund, I can`t justify spending 1600.00 on phone and not able to root and do with it what I want with it, but there`s always the global version I could go back too, I`m going return it and wait and see if Sony does eventually allow it to unlock the bootloader, until then I`ll just use my Pixel 6 pro for now.
Can you please let me know if :
a. the NA model has Dual SIM support ?
b. Face unlock works (was told the fingerprint scanner is a bit finicky)

a. there is dual sim support, but you will lose the micosd card, because Sim 2 uses the microsd slot
b. no face unlock and both global and USA version`s the fingerprint readers worked perfect.
Is the 5G SA standalone or NSA only?
Should be both on all versions, USA model difference is mmWave support.
Would also like to know if they finally enabled 5G SA on T-Mobile with this year models.

You can know that without buying phone. Download the firmware with xperifirm, extract modem.img and use ELFextract to extract your hw variants .mbn file. This will reveal the carrier/band policy files (in policyman folder) which live in the modem. There you can see which bands are enabled for specific operators and if they are enabled for SA and NSA.

Thanks for the tip. I got as far as extracting mbn files. I can't seem to find ELFextract tool you've mentioned. I'm assuming this is different than readelf utility.

Thank you for confirming that Google fi does utilize Wi-Fi calling on the Xperia 1 IV.
Hi, i bought a unlocked xq-bc62 in US. I travel a lot and discovered 5G won't work in several carriers networks, no matter what I do in the phone ( I spend more time outside US). I called the carriers support and they confirmed their network doesn't have any lock preventing the use of overseas 5G bought phones. So far, I tried to use it in Portugal, UK, Ireland and Brazil but 5G is not recognized by the phone. I changed the sim for a 5G local one, changed ASN, manually chose network (5G ones are not displayed) and no success. I even tried to pray, but again, no success. I contacted Sony Support and they said phone will only work in 5G in 2 of the 3 main carriers in US and not outside US, despite the phone tech specs says it will work in all the frequencys used by above carriers. There are some threads here that confirm xq-bc62 Is not a full 5g phone. All said and done, my Question: is it possible to flash another region Image like xq-bc52 or xq-bc72 in this hardware? Will it work fine and, mainly, will 5G networks be accessible outside US? Tks
Some times its hardware but you can try mtk engineer mode settings there may be something of use there
If you can get the original vendor file usually have (user low ship...) its usually international
Unless the phone is using 4.5G and not real 5G

Yep, the US models have numerous disabled features and run late on updates. I've also noticed it's crippled or disabled while roaming. I'm not sure if it's directly from disabled features or it it has been blocked by telcos because it malfunctions. (It gets kicked off cell towers in the US)
The US model has slightly different radio hardware so I would expect problems flashing the OS from another region. There are some tricks for changing the feature lists that might be a safer bet.

How would one check what is and isn't turned on network wise??
I was able to flash the XQ-BC52 ROM in my XQ-BC62 hardware. So far, working fine in 4G+, but I´m in area with no 5G coverage. Tomorrow I will go to an 5G area and check f it worked. If not, I will try the XQ-BC72. I will keep you posted.

Maybe something along the lines of Getting VoLTE and VoWiFi on unlisted carriers by flashing mbn file or 5II/1&5III VoLTE patch. [Guide to release the root] or https://band.radio/
I haven't rooted yet so I haven't tried them. I bring a T-Mobile LG Velvet 5G with me when I travel. It's a little slower but doesn't have all the telco problems.
Test done, xqbc-52 doesn't see 5G network as well. XQ-BC72 SEA is a no go, don't even recognize the SIM card in the phone.
Will try another firmwares and the tweaks kevinmcmurtrie mentioned above, but my feeling is: I paid the 5G price for the Phone and actually got a a 4G Phone. Very frustrated with Sony. Thinking seriously about going back to Samsung.

UPDATE!!! 5G is working!!!!! After Several Attempts, I finally got 5G. What worked for me, in Claro BR Network, was flash a Hybrid ROM. I Flashed A XQ-BC52 ROM with Modem files from XQ-BC72. So far everything working as it should. My only concern, next month I will be in Germany, may I have trouble in LTE over there with XQ-BC72 modems?

Ok, major setback. it worked for 3 hours and when I turned on my second Sim card the phone 5G was gone. Turned it off, reset radio configs, but no success. Apparently turning the second sim on override the BC72 configs. Time to get serious now and root the phone, what I'm very reluctant to do.

How did you manage to do that? Could you please explain the process?
Settings, Network & internet, Smart connectivity and turn off. On by default. See if it works. I found where I am at it tends to look for wifi over 5G.

That's what I want to more..i have the xq-bc72 on mint mobile and no5g.even my kids xiaomi 11 5g ne has 5g on mint.
I am on Mint, T-mobile towers. 5G works great, has to be in your settings. For MMS use the T-mobile APN settings.
I would like to activate 4g+ on my xq-bc52!
