[Q] Recommend a phone that is not locked down

I am a Windows Phone developer who writes apps for wearable devices like the Pebble that are not supported or poorly supported on Windows Phone. In order to understand the Bluetooth protocol for the device I normally download the manufacturers apk for their device and decompile it to understand the Bluetooth packet requirements.
I have been using a Nexus 7 which has worked well but the last couple of devices I have purchased, Google Play will not allow me to download the apk because my Nexus 7 is not a phone. So the question is what would be the recommended pre-owned device I should get that will still allow me to download apps meant for an Android phone but still allow me to get to Google Play and the apk when downloaded.
If it makes a difference, I use Verizon but if a suitable phone was not available or too expensive, I would be willing to go with a phone I could not use on Verizon but still use Google Play on.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Google Certifications?

I am looking to pick up a prob7 however with the recent device blocking I need to be sure of google certification. Google’s official list includes all variants of the Pro 7 family, however i’ve seen zero proof from the actual device. Can anyone confirm whether the device is certified in the play store. Also, which rom variants are certified? Do I need the G rom or is the A rom also certified? I am
Maybe new devices will be approved or you need to wait for a system update.

What do you mean by Google certification? Are you interested if this phone would run Google Play, services and the whole suite of Google apps? It does.
G Rom has Google built in and every Google thing works as expected.
A Rom comes Google free, but you can install Google Store and all other Google things easily (by apk).

Unnoficial/Modded app crash on Cat S61 (Android 8.1.0)

Hello,
I have two phones , one Cat S60 and today, reciewed my new Cat S61.
I have installed same apps that i have on my S60, but, the problem is, many modded app or other unnoficial app have problems with the new android system. On my S60, it working very well.
For exemple, i have and old version of Pocket Informant (i supposed is a "cracked" version but not sure) and a Modded version of Hogwarts Mystery. Both crash instantly when louching the app. Have black screen for few seconds and return to android desktop and have a texte say the app have crashed. If retry, same crash and android said (in french: "Harry Potter s'arrête systémathiquement") i think trad is "Always Crashing". I have no problems on the S60 is running on Android Mashmallow (if i'm correct). Other user have similar problems with custom app like me on his Android Oreo 8.1 or it's specific to the News Cat S61 and will be resolved by future update?
Thanks in advance for your answer and sorry for my bad spelling ^^'
Sounds like the applications are incompatible with the new android. Keep sending the reports to the developers and hopefully some day they release new versions for new Android. If you are rocking some "cracked" soft, then it might just be an old- non-updated version of the app. Search for these apps on google play and purchase them, if you enjoy them. That gives the developers some well deserved money and motivation to fix the issues.

That i have maked for Pocket Informant. The reason i have a cracked version is i dont like the new interface of the calendar (and as need to pay for have all function, for gaving an old version of the app, needed to be a "cracked" because if isnt, even if you have paid the new version, the old (uncrackef) stay limited function. For harry potter (hogwards mystery) it just i whont paid anything ingame for advance in game or other. If the dev put this game on store and need to paid for have it and play "unlimited, i will pay for it, but... If you read how the game is working, it's just a scam for get maximum monney of people X). The mod make just infinite energy ingame and dont need to paid for advance in the game ^^.
So, it's not a Android "limitation" to make unable to have non official or modded apk . I will wait that get new version of my apps and see what happens.

Google pay and/or Samsung pay with Root

So I currently have a Tmobile Note 8 that I just found out that rooting it will prevent me from installing apps like bank apps and using samsung pay. I also have an At&t Note 10 plus for work but I dont want to root it as if something happens how will I explain it to my boss lol. So being that my Note 8 is 3 years old I decided that it's time to upgrade to a new phone. My question is what phone can I buy that I will still be able to install bank apps and keep using google or samsung pay. I'm open to any suggestions
Thank you
David
these guidelines will help
--- find out if rooting is easily available for the phone
--- take a look at extant ROMs and see what are the problems associated with those ... in the latest update and how easy it is to fix them or else live with them
--- broader the user base better it is find support available for various issues
--- coming to your question on banking apps it has nothing to do with what phone you want to buy
if you root that phone and the banking app has various checks and balances to detect root you may not be able to use it. with passage of time banking apps are clamping down on root detection and unfortunately Evasive measures are not sufficient so those fighting for root and wanting to use banking apps ... are on the losing side

Question Gapps on Color OS OnePlus 9r

Hi guys looking to buy the OnePlus 9R in China so it'll have color OS installed. Anyway to install Gapps on Color OS 11xxx? Thnx
Chinese user here, core gapps like Google Play Services and other components are pre-installed in, so you just need to install a Play Store (and maybe a manual update of the service), then you can use the gapps.
Thnx
A bit late, but I bought it in China as well, and Color OS is absolute madness. Ads everywhere, on system level - in app drawer, top drawer and god knows where else. Plus it comes with a ton of preinstalled garbage, and the Chinese play store equivalent upon first launch "recommends" you 27 (!) other apps that are utter garbage as well.
Do yourself a favor and follow the guide over on https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/oneplus-9r-oxygen-os-india-msmdownloadtool.4268431/ to install the Indian OS (which is a localized OxygenOS). Works like a charm and only comes with very little bloatware that can be killed easily (some RedCordClub that seems to be a oneplus bonus program and a cricket score app that is for whatever reasons installed as system app). Both can be killed with adb uninstall, don't even need root.
