Android 11 or 12 for Google pixel XL? - Google Pixel XL ROMs, Kernels, Recoveries, & Other

Is there a rom or software to put on the Google pixel XL to get it to Android 11 or 12?

Unless you want scoped storage in all its cpu cycle sucking glory... I would stay on 10.

This is probably not the place to ask questions, but I will answer.

Android 12 on Pixel XL works, but it has quite a serious bug, mentioned below.

no one makes roms for pixels because they sell so few units

I think the reasons are slightly different. I think it's just hard to make an Android 12 port.

There already exists a port for the HTC Ten, so it's possible.

Apparently at the moment a good option would be tO INSTALL lineage OS 18.1. And install the monthly security updates Which you can find in the corresponding thread. The phone works just fine.

Does lineage os 18.1 rom support free unlimited photo backup?

The general consensus was that Android 12 would not work without big issues on the Nexus 6 either but someone tried and got it working. There now exists (Android 12) for the Nexus 6 which is a lot older then the Pixel XL. They even got VoLTE working. It works great as a NAV device for my Motorcycle.
Would hope that someone would take a second look at 12 for the Pixel XL and not just write it off because someone else said so.

Dear All,
I just brought this phone Google Pixel Xl 128gb second hand for using Google Photos storage. I want to know if there is any upcoming Android 12 or 13 rom. Also if i use any Android 11 rom will it still get the Google photos unlimited storage if i update to another rom

Yes, you still get unlimited storage in Google Photos if you use a (reputable) custom ROM. I use LineageOS 18.1 on my Pixel (non-XL) just for backing up my photos and videos. It still has unlimited original quality Google Photos backup.

I would backup all critical data redundantly to at least 2 hdds that are physically and electronically isolated from each other and the PC.
I also use 2 .5gb OTG flashsticks for "dirty" backups for my data drive, an SD card(s). My backup is 5 or 6+ layers deep, time staggered and none is cloud.
Lol, I've lost a Google account; it can happen and if it does kiss that data goodbye... FRP is bad enough, but losing critical data is not an option!

Android Oreo: Go Edition ROMs

Hello, developers. I'm Dondre Johnson (XDA: Scholeggo; an XDA newbie), and I currently have a Sprint variant of the Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime (G530P). It's sad to hear the Unofficial Lineage OS 15 won't be supporting this variant. But I believe there's a solution you probably heard of by now, that can fix performance on any updated ROM, on all variants of the Grand Prime: and it's Android Oreo: Go Edition. (Don't confuse this with the original Android 8.1)
Developers, if you're seeing this thread, (including you guys, @vince2678, @Has.007), I am requesting that you guys please consider importing Android Oreo: Go Edition in the ROMs for these variants. It would really benefit us.
(I know that Sprint sucks, but, unfortunately, I'm one of them, and I won't be getting a new phone anytime soon. Please don't leave me out! Android Oreo: Go Edition is guaranteed to increase performance and help save mobile data, storage and battery juice. So it will be easier on me, and it should also be easier on you as well, developers, when developing the ROMs. (Correct me if I'm wrong))
I'm excited to hear your response and opinions. Thank you for your consideration.

Ugh. This again? -_-
Again, Android Go is only given by Google to OEMs and are not possible to be built from source. Only new devices given by such OEMs are capable of Android Go, given that the OEM selected Android Go as such device's ROM.
Thank you.
I agree with @Jovic77
Also you also will never need Android go edition anyway. Android Go is for Low-end devices which has less than 1GB (example 512mb) and lower SoC (like Snapdragon 200 series or MTK SoC). Grand prime has hardware powerful enough to run a full version of Android 8.1.
If you want to experience Android go just wait for Android 8.1 to be release for your device. Install Go Editon of GAPPS like YouTube Go, Play Go, Maps Go, Files Go etc.

Well, I guess that could work, but the guarantee of taking up half of the original space for the system, compared to Android 7.1.1 is the main reason I wanted it.
No offense to @Has.007, but his Resurrection Remix ROM bricked my Class 10 SanDisk SD card, weeks after I formatted it to internal storage, and days after I set in Developer options to force eligible apps onto the card (Ok... now I don't know if that was my fault.)
Sorry if I annoyed you @Jovic77, but I really thought Android Go would improve the performance as well, since that and multitasking between the maximum of 3 apps is troublesome on these ROMs. Plus, I'm not the only one who requested Android Go.
But Ill take your suggestion, tasnim_tamim. I'll wait for the original Android 8.1 to be released for my Sprint Grand Prime, port the Go edition of Gapps, and see if the storage management has improved. Thanks forthe suggestion and feedback.

Nah, I'm not annoyed. xD
But yes, @tasnim_tamim's suggestion may work for older devices. But the full Android Go will never be available to any older devices. I;m also hoping for a "Go" set of GApps too, since they work for Android 4.1 onwards.
If performance is your concern with your current rom then I suggest you get rid of Google play-services completely. I use my phone without google , it runs absolutely flawless and lag free.

I don't use GApps on my 5 years old Galaxy Tab 2 running on LineageOS 13 and I can easily live with it. I download my apps from APKMirror and Aptoide, Use OGYouTube as a YouTube alternative that uses its own Gapps called MicroG, and most of the games doesn't forces me to use play games (I don't even have play games on my Grand Prime )..
So it's not really impossible to live without GApps. Although sure it's annoying to not get updates or getting easy access and features like play store.. but it still is better than using GApps which really slows down my already slow tablet.

Actually I see no difference between gapps and microg in performance. There's still a huge difference between the battery life though. My phone is smooth af with gapps, on los 14.1
I couldn't get used to microg.

I use MicroG on my tab.. not phone.
I used MicroG for a while on my phone.. and yes the performance boost was not noticeable. But still for me RAM was really great. Play Service on GApps takes more than 70mb... But MicroG only takes 25-60mb. Not noticeable battery though.
My phone is smooth with GApps... But my really old tablet lags alot with GApps on LOS 13. My tablet is really old (2012) and can't even run TouchWiz properly. So MicroG is only option for my tab.

I'm extremely dedicated to the Google ecosystem. All of my emails are in Gmail, all of my devices are connected to my Google Account, my photos are synced to my Google Photos. Heck, even builds of my ROMs are uploaded first to my Google Drive.
I dunno, maybe a Filipino (like me) relies on Google so much since we really don't have better services or as seamless as Google's here. xD
there is no impossible in android world....
What is the difference between microG and Gapps? It still features all the Google functionalities, right?
Did you have any problems using any Google apps and APIs?
Who has noticed difference in performance/battery life on a G530P?
There's a storage space difference, right?

Actually , yeah i kinda can't get used to MicroG as well. Sure that MicroG gives you more RAM, but is it really matter with a 1 GB RAM phone? This why buy a new phone is way better than tweaking your phone too hard.
I know that not everyone's rich, but that's the only way if you don't want to experience lag anymore .
Besides, some of Gapps won't work without the actual Google Play Services. For example, the Google Search app. It won't retrieve my account info, and i really need it . Heck, even the Go version can't do it.
But then again, we all have different tastes and opinions. Although if MicroG can make all Gapps working, i might gonna switch to MicroG in the future. But i'll stay with Gapps for now because i need some of the Gapps to be truly working ( and hoping that OpenGapps Go will exist in the future. ).
And @Jovic77 , i think you're way too much dependent on Google.

Nice.
I tried searching some comparisons betwen LineageOS and this, mainly for differences, especially depending privacy, but I didn't find any.
Any info?
Well, CRDroid for mi a3 is based on lineage, mainly differences besides that, are the amount of features that CRDroid has compared to lineage. And you have a big plus with OTA updates.
For your concern, privacy is very strict between both of them at the same level, as of now, CRDroid has already April patch which lineage doesn't.
Yeah I read it's a fork of LineageOS and has more features.
My concern is not security (which is what patches address) but privacy, it has to do with google telemetry hard coded in the kernel, and other stuff like network scanning, wifi triangulation etc.
if you're really really concerned about privacy and will go overboard my advice is just flash any aosp rom without gapps. Just find alternative apps for youtube (this was my main concern) like newpipe.
I've been researching a whole lot of privacy focused apps and started replacing them one by one.
But ROM should be first.
Does aosp ROMs or CrDroid contains Google services?

If you are so focused on privacy then ditching all Google apps and researching microg would be the first thing you should do. Replacing apps now is useless as Google will still pull your data from every app on your device so long as play services are installed (or any Google app for that matter)

Micro G it's kinda confusing first times you read. To answer your questions, yes, you will be Google free. Microg is mostly for apps that depends on Google services to live. It replaces the Google apps but without sending any info to Google anonymously. They just connect to make a login, that it's why signature spoofing is important, without it, microg wouldn't be able to fake gapps for those apps who required then.
Different thing is that you don't use any app who doesn't require Google services. But banking apps, for example, most of them requires it, so that it's the moment when microg plays the fake game.

Hmm I see. It would be nice if you could work to make it encrypted by default especially in this ROM. However I understand it may need some of your time.
BTW, I checked fast some screenshots, I saw some dots, seems there is a padding issue in status bar. (not sure tho since I checked from screenshots, I haven't tried the ROM yet). If you want take a look at crDroid values here, it may help with padding.
Does this build also receive OTA updates? Wishful thinking I'm sure, but i'm very interested. Do you have any plans to bring your project up to the newest iteration of CalyxOS? I think it's on 4.6.0 now. Any clarity you can offer on how your build copes with updates and what other manufacturer specific updates you've had to keep an eye on would be good to know as well please.
I think your build might have a specific application at the intersection of privacy fanaticism and audiophile listening with external DAC/AMP. The user can luxuriate in the use of interchangeable micro SD storage slots and the infinitely expandable, offline library it affords them. This means they can do away with depending on an internet connection and subscriptions to lossless music services like Qobuz, Tidal, Deezer, etc.
Alternatives in the android-based DAP market often have limited, non-expandable storage, and rely on versions of android which are outdated but no less privacy invasive. Whereas using a Poco F1 with custom ROM opens things up entirely. It also allows users to incrementally upgrade their DAC whilst always relying on this phone as their DAP playing hi-res files over USB. No need to upgrade DAP.
I'm really keen to learn how you built this. I think this phone is an ideal candidate for DIY, cost-effective, privacy respecting lossless listening.

In my understanding, not present by default:
GrapheneOS is also hard at work on filling in gaps from not bundling Google apps and services into the OS. We aren't against users using Google services but it doesn't belong integrated into the OS in an invasive way.

They provide a compatibilty layer and capability to install it as an app
CalyxOS since Jan/Feb with no G stuff. I'm not moving from here it's a happy place for my phone and use case.

ROM advice request

Hi, I have an old GT-i9300 phone that I was going to lend to someone going on holiday. They wanted a phone that they would not be worried about if it grew legs and walked off, so old and slow was fine.
They wanted to use it for:
google maps,
google translate,
google photos,
gmail,
chrome
And all was going well until i was testing google maps and after a few days i started getting annoying popups informing me that android 4.3 or older are no longer supported. And then said person requested support for a pile of other apps.
So I have no choice but to install a custom rom as android 8 or higher is now required.
I have come here seeking your wisdom and knowledge in finding a custom rom for android 8 or later that is stable enough for daily use, has working wifi, NFC, data roaming and camera.
Please help

ive tried a couple of roms in the past days. they all have some kind of little issues. especially the higher android versions from 8-12 are quite buggy.
what i can recommend is:
1. resurrection remix 5.8.5 android 7: https://sourceforge.net/projects/resurrectionremix/files/i9300/ and https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-7-1-2_r2-i9300-ressurrection-remix-n-5-8-3-official.3270121/ (for reference)
2. lineage os 14.1 android 7 by mibo: https://github.com/Mibo5354/i9300_builds/releases
this one i tried today and it looks to be the best overall one so far:
3. lineage os 16.1 android 9: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-16-0-by-team-infusion-beta-20-08-19.3940142/
this one may also be a good one:
4. lineage os 15.1 anroid 8: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-15-1-for-galaxy-s3-by-team-infusion.3941516/

if you want gps navigation take mapfactor navigator with open street maps. google maps, translator and mail you can use via browser, as browser take opera gx, it has adblocker and antiminer built in. play store you dont need just take the apks. i never install gapps. photo / gallery is available in all roms by default.
but if you want gapps you have to chose a specific package for the respective roms, like opengapps for arm.
The Open GApps Project
OpenGApps.org offers information and pre-built packages of The Open GApps Project. The Open GApps Project is an open-source effort to script the automatic generation of up-to-date Google Apps packages. All Android versions and platforms supported.
