General Feb Google play system update - Google Pixel 6

I just saw the new Feb update for Google play system come in. I don't know how but after the install my fingerprint scanner speed is significantly faster. As in 0.7 seconds before registration where is was previously about1.5 seconds. I am super happy!
Is this just a placebo effect or do more of you experience a more responsive fp reader?

Placebo. Your finger is probably just more oily/moist than usual. The sensor on this phone hates dry fingers.

I removed the tempered glass protector and re-enrolled fingers which took forever. The fingerprint sensor became stupider. Is this placebo?

No I installed this a few hours ago and tried it myself and I see a 100 % improvement over what it was before. My fingers are not oily actually they are pretty dry. Now if they could just fix this mobile network standby using 30% battery I would be happy.
And as a side note does anyone know if the Google store unlocked version of pixel 6 is working with Verizons c band?
It's very weird I remember in 2016 my buddy was on Verizon and his LTE was 100+ Mbps download. Now I don't get anything near that. 50 at most on LTE. If I get 5g it's between 80 and 100. I was hoping c band would give me 300 but I don't know how to test c band. Verizon clamis my town gets c-band but I haven't seen it yet. Maybe I need an update to activate it. I see on Verizon website that pixel 6 is supported but that's the Verizon branded one.
I wonder if I sideload and install Verizon specific builds for this phone if that would work.

fingerprint seems better for me as well. i'm on t-mobile getting 600+ Mbps down in boston

Just updated and from initial impressions (about 10 unlocks) it seems more accurate than before.
Edit: After being out and about today, which was a chilly day in England, I found the sensor almost 100% useless and had to use pin unlock most of the time.

I think this is common in cold weather even with reliable fingerprint sensors, especially if there's bright sunlight to confuse the sensor more.
A sysinfo app called DevCheck detects a Goodix fingerprint sensor. When I looked it up I came across an article saying these sensors are high quality and used in other phones with in-screen fingerprint sensors. Point being that software ought to be able to fix Pixel 6 problems. I'm confident it'll get ironed out eventually but for now I've given up on mine. I don't mind using a PIN. Mainly I'd like fingerprint access to Keepass2Android which worked fine with my old $200 phone.

I agree problems will get ironed out. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with the sensor as it works 100% successfully on banking apps. It is only the initial unlock where there seems to be a problem. My Oneplus 7pro never had a problem whatever the weather conditions though.

A friend with an 8T tells me the same thing about cool weather but he fumbles if temps are "really cold". I would think this is normal but I really don't know. Pixel 6 is my first phone with an in-screen fingerprint sensor and whatever I know about the tech I've learned in the past month.
In my case enrollment barely works so I've had limited experience unlocking. Maybe it's my imagination but it seemed slightly better while on the January update. Other than that, no other gripes and I consider myself lucky.

Fingerprint speed compared to other modern flagships?

Hi,
I am currently looking to buy Honor 10, however, after reading some reviews and comments on the internet regarding the slowness and unresponsiveness of the fp scanner, I am really hesitant to.
May I know opinions on anyone already using the Honor 10 regarding the fp speed/reliability compared to iphone 7, oneplus 5 etc.?
it's bad compared to regular FP in other Huawei models, when it works it's fine, but it doesn't work always, though face unlock in good lightning conditions it's superfast, not very usable in dark (obviously)
though compared to other brands even this is still decent FP

Can you have a comparison with other brands as well, for example iphone 6s, samsung s7, oneplus 3 etc.
No problem after the first update.
And it's important how the fingerprint is registered.
One finger is recognized everytime on first try. An other finger ist working in 90% of the time.
I came from a Honor 8, and this brand new Honor 10 is a BIG Disappointment. Doesn't work fast, sometimes only recognize the fingerprint at the 3rd or 4th try...
Actually it's horrible... It takes severel times to detect the finger print (can compare to my Mate 8 and the Honor 6x).
But the face unlock is surprisingly good, even in low light and if you not hold your phone perpendicular to your face
The fingerprint reader is embarrassingly bad and I really hope they can improve it with a firmware update.
Thankfully, as mentioned, face unlock works really well.
it's really a shame then would have been perfect if they just used the normal fingerprint technology. I'm still holding out of buying it until I can try it in shop but they don't have stock for demo yet.
Same experience here - FP reader is slow and inconsistent, however face unlock works so well that I just use this and am very happy with it.
It's a different type of fingerprint scanner on the Honor 10. Its under the bezzel of the display and works with pressure. A slightly unfair comparison to other flagships here. In my opinion the fingerprint scanner placement isn't useful. Face unlock is faster.
I agree what other said. The fingerprint sensor just isn't as responsive as other conventional fingerprint sensors. I guess that is the trade off on some usability for style (under-glass sensor). There is no lowered platform in this phone. And no fingerprint sensor at the back ties in nicely with the cool phantom colors of the back cover.
Face unlock is faster but less secure as it is not true 3d face unlock technology like Iphone X or the Mi 8. I personally still go with fingerprint instead of face unlock.
I find the fingerprint sensor to be pretty fast although you do have to have to put pressure on it. What is more disappointing is when you want to use it for off screen navigation swiping it from left to right or right to left is supposed to bring up recent tasks but it only works about 50% of the time. I have put the on screen navigation back but it's a shame because it uses up screen space.
Fp is lame!! Use face unlock lmao

I agree. The unresponsive fingerprint for navigation even after the update is what makes me want to return the Honor 10 and get the P20. I want to use the off-screen navigation but same experience, it's unresponsive and works only half the time. P20 doesn't have this problem whatsoever.
They wanted full underscreen scanner.
Drawbacks. As everyone have noticed, ridiculous sensitivity issue.
Kinda hoped they just use back normal scanner, although it would feel different than glass, it functions better.
Mine works pretty well, i have no problems with unlocking or navigation. The only problem is the recent apps gesture, because of the screen protector it dosent work all the time from the first try.
Bought this phone last week...yeah it's a little bit slower than other flagship phones but i never had a problem with my fp recognition, it always works pretty good and doesn't need that much pressure. Though i have to admit i prefer the face unlock, it's faster, more convenient and i can use it while driving.

True, unlocking and navigation works fine. Same with me that recent apps gesture works only 50% of the time and that's a bit frustrating to me :/
I dont want to remove the screen protector, i bet it will work flawless after. We have to swipe full FP and the protector kinda prevents us to do that.
As almost evryone said it's not the fastest on earth but it kinda works and do the job, even if sometimes I have to try 3 times before unlocking.
I first tried the face unlock but sometimes I just want to take a look at the notifications without unlocking my phone so I de-activated it and the more i am using the FP the better it seems to work (or maybe I'm just getting used to it). Also I use the FP to navigate in the UI and love it for the moment even if the recent apps is sometimes hard to get.

Question No Face unlock?!

Hey
Did not realize the P6's didn't have Face unlock
Yes, this is a HUGE disappointment but I'm hopeful for it's return, along side the fingerprint sensor, in the next year or 2.
Yr sucks although most android face unlock phones are pretty bad and only work in good light then its hit and miss wish they would take a leaf out of apples face unlock at least it works flawlessly 99% of the time even in the dark only android phones with 3d facial unlocked that came near apples was from Huawei think p40 pro etc maybe 30 pro if remember correctly , I would of much preferred a side mounted fingerprint than a in display one there just as bad with screen protectors etc
Had many inexpensive Chinese 'phones where face unlock is flawless, in near darkness too. My Smartisan is superb in any light, my TCL 10 Pro not so good, even in good light. It has been suggested that face unlock is not very secure (particularly the Chinese models) but I've never managed to fool it with anyone else's face, in a mirror, photographs or random objects . I really like face unlock though one of the problems with more recent versions of Android is that you are often required to use a password after a number of hours have expired. This also applies to fingerprints too. I realise it is for security, but it truly is a pain. My Windows PC has face unlock and it not only recognises me at some distance, but so far I've not needed a password in nine months or so since buying it.
I work with my hands and my fingerprints must become worn, cut or just plain dirty and I find optical fingerprint readers fail to recognise my fingers or thumbs from day to day, hour to hour. Ultrasonic or at least physical fingerprint readers work far better for me. So if Google can add face unlock, I would be grateful. Even if it is a greater security risk.

I'm in the same boat, I'm old, my fingertips are worn and getting fp unlock to work is a challenge at best.
On my OP7 (current device) I've been using face unlock for almost 2 years without a single issue. When I initially set it up I was only messing around so I set it up in bed while watching TV, with very dim lighting. But thanks to that it works every time, it's never failed under any lighting and 7 times out of 10 even works at the grocery when I'm wearing my mask.
I'll be using Swipe or None on my Pixel 6 lockscreen now because Google removed face unlock "for security" ... not sure how Swipe/None are more secure though, it's simply ridiculous and makes no sense at all.

I do wish they had both and was kind of counting on it due to earlier reports. I am also, I'll call it elderly since "old" seems to be a state of mind. I have trouble sometimes with FP especially in certain environments such as dry weather or wrinkly skin after swimming. I've taken to one hand mode so I can enter the keys rather quickly although I do curse at it most of the time. My experience with face unlock on the P4 was rather good in all kinds of lighting until face masks became ubiquitous. Then it didn't work at all. Apple figured it out but you needed an iWatch (is that what they call it?) in order to make it flawless and that is not acceptable to most users of Android. But hopefully they will enable both in the future perhaps with a software update or dare I say it, the P7?

Your face is now the property of the PRC.
I suspect Face Unlock will show up on the Pixel 6 in due time. Unfortunate that is not there in release.
I wouldn't be surprised for this to show up as a software update in the future officially, given the difficulties being experienced with the in-screen fingerprint sensor combined with screen protectors.

Almost certainly! Especially as a few have been direct imports of brands not sold (widely, if at all) out of the Chinese markets.

Question Fingerprint reader vs previous Pixels

I'm still using a Pixel 3a and am having the same problem I always have at this time of year (winter). The heated air dries everything out, including my skin, things are staticky, etc. and the fingerprint reader on the back stops working well, if at all. Sometimes I can record a new print and get it working again, but often I have to revert to unlocking with a pattern which is a PITA compared to the reader when it's working! Other times of year it works great.
I'm aware of the early problems with the in-screen reader on the P6, but in general has it been consistently reliable once it starts working? There have to be some others who have seen similar issues to what I'm going through. A more reliable reader might put me into a P6 although I might still wait to see if a P6a shows up.
6a is coming there has already been lots of chatter about it. But I think it is going to have the same fingerprint reader as the regular p6. Not the one you have now. By the way the fingerprint reader you have now is 100 times better than what's on the p6 in my opinion anyway. So if that's what your looking for you will be very disappointed if you get the p6. But don't get me wrong the p6 is a great phone and worth every penny. Just the finger print reader is not too great.
For me after january update fingerprint reader works ok. It is still not 100% and definitely if your finger is cold and/or dry it may not recognize it but now i have around 90% success rate even with glass screen protector which is comparable with my previous phone using optical in display reader (oneplus 7). Definitely ultrasonic fingerprint readers are better but pixel lineup is quite conservative regarding FP reader so i don't expect to see such fp reader in pixel before pixel 7 or even pixel 8 maybe.
For me the FP reader is great, about the same as on my previous OnePlus phones. Only rarely does it not get me on the first try.
One difficult scenario is "first 5-10 minutes after taking a shower" as I think the swelling of skin throws it off. Other than that, basically works every time.

Hey Google: Acknowledge & Fix The Fingerprint Scanner
11-9-2021 - RETURNING DEVICE I’ve given it some time to try screen different screen protectors but the nail in the coffin for me is Googles response to how bad the fingerprint scanner is. I can’t accept that as a answer with no foreseeable fixes...

Question Does Android 13 beta 4.1 REALLY fix the fingerprint scanner?

The buggy fingerprint scanner was one a dealbreaker for me.
Has the scanner performance improved with this update? Did anyone try?
Source: PhoneArena
It's been significantly better since beta 2.
I still can't use a tempered glass screen protector though, and none of the Google recommended ones are even available in the UK.
My scanner never really was unusable a little laggy but certainly not a deal breaker. But it has actually shown significant improvement since the third quarterly release of 12. And it has been consistent on Android 13. I joined 13 in beta 3 so I haven't been on it all that long but the fingerprint more or less works about the same for me it works. It is not as fast as the old rear fingerprint on all the other pixels and it's about the same as the face id from the pixel 4 I would say. But definitely secure which is all that really matters. Unlike the reports coming in from the p6a 5hst say the phone can be unlocked with any finger regardless of if the print is registered. Now that would be a deal breaker for me.

How would you say it compares to the one I have on my Realme? Here's a 20-sec video of how the scanner works there
It is as good if not better than that video. I'm currently on 13 beta 4.1
On stable it were a little slow, but my finger got recognised almost 100%. Now on 13.4.1 it's fast as it could be and works 100% of times.
I went from extremely frustrating (50% success at best) on 12 to mostly acceptable (80% success) on 13.4.1. The modem is a little better also. Still a frustrating phone, but I haven't wanted to throw it for a couple weeks so that is an improvement.
I get about the same success rate on the P6 as I did on my S20, but the S20 also had face unlock. What seems to help more than anything is if I get my thumb wet (like condensation from a bottle) or even slightly licking my thumb (not recommended most of the time).
But, I also have issues with our fingerprint timeclock at work because my finger prints are wore down from 30 years of playin guitar.
My P4 face unlock was the best so far (and my work iPhone 13 Pro).

Question Fingerprint

I have come to the conclusion that Google gave up on the under the screen optical fingerprint reader. Tried with out a screen protector, tried turned on off touch screen sensitivity. Any idea?

It's a known issue ever since launch and nothing seems to be working out. I've enrolled 6 fingerprints and success rate is less than 50% first time. I gave up on this after using it for couple of weeks and accepted the fact that there's no solution.

I'm on a P6a but probably similar situations. I was even worse with about 25% success rate and couldn't even add a FP. I signed up for QPR1 Beta 1 yesterday and the FPR is flawless. 100% in the time I have it running (other than missing the sensor half way once). It basically fixes it. FP added as well and it works.
Thanks for the update. I have beta update available but haven't installed it yet. Let me do it over the weekend.
FWIW, I have been using an IQShield screen protector on my Pixel 6 without issue. Close to 100% success rate for fingerprints. I'm really curious what causes some people to experience problems, and others not.
I'm starting to wonder if this is a per-device thing or something. I got mine a few days ago and have been using it constantly, and it hasn't missed a fingerprint read yet.
Out of curiosity, do y'all have dry skin or something? I wonder if it has anything to do with how well your fingertip flattens against the glass.
Well, after installing the latest beta QPR 1, this issue is resolved.. 100% success rate

No dry skin or other issues coz I've been using onscreen fingerprin from ages but definitely device issue i guess, which is now resolved.

I took advise on the beta. Opt in. Fingerprint works great. Never ever use the privacy screen protector either. That blocks the fingerprint, and enrollment.
Since the June update, never had any issue with the fingerprint again. Before it was hit and miss.
You guys have the Pixel 6a?
Cheers
The two best tricks I am aware of are:
-Registering the same finger more than once
-Using hand lotion frequently to avoid dry skin
