The device may not work in diagnostic mode.
why do you need to change the phones imei??
Any Discussion about IMEI Changes is against XDA Rules and as such illegal in several countries.

I really want to give write access to a particular application, to a folder on the usb drive! Xiaomi interface does not prompt for granting permissions. and googling around suggests that this device can't be rooted as well!
There has to be a way!! This is driving me nuts. Please help

It's a good device, but very 'locked in' . No amazon prime etc..
I suggest you to don't root the MI phone, I had really bad experience with that..
Its not a phone, but a modified(by Xiaomi) androidTV box.
I have been searching for a way to root this device to potentially use gcam due to camera2api being disabled. If anyone needs anything from the phone let me know!
