Guide: Force 4G/LTE When Stuck on 3G, Korean LG G6 (LGM-G600L) - LG G6 Guides, News, & Discussion

UPDATE: Use the app to select "LTE/CDMA/UMTS auto (PRL)" which starts as LTE but will switch to 3G to make voice calls. if you force LTE alone then voice calls won't work.
This is simple once you know how but otherwise most would probably assume a 3G only area or forget the device is actually 4G capable. So this another eccentricity of this model. I was told that I should definitely be getting 4G/LTE at my address when the phone would only connect to 3G. But various guides recommend changing "Network Mode" to force 4G. However this model does not have this setting. I had to install "4G LTE Switcher" and switch to "LTE/WCDMA" and now get 20.7 Mbps according to Google Speed Test, when on 3G I was at 11 Mbps.

With 2G only checked - no data

With Use "2G Only" checked I get NO data. I've been googling and testing for 4 hours.
When I uncheck "2G Only" it switches to 3g and I get data. If the 3g signal is bad it will switch to E and I will get data and if I move near the window and the signal gets better it will switch back to H. So I know Edge works fine and is in this area.
At the same location, if I check 2G Only, I get no data. Voice is fine.
I went into *#*#4636 Info and when GSM Only is selected, I press Menu, and it shows Enable Data connection but when I select it, it does nothing. The menu disappears but it acts like nothing happened.
When I boot Windows Mobile 6.5 Edge and 3G work fine.
I have to get 2G only working because the 3g is random in my condo.
FYI, I can't get MMS sending to work either. I tried port 8080, I tried with username and without, with and without passwords, with APN type and without too.
I've had the same problem on builds that have a 3g only choice (wcdma). When selecting, I get no signal, otherwise it was fine. I wonder what that is messing with.

I have the same issue too
What network are you on? TMobile I assume since you talk about Edge and GSM.
Edge is 2.75G in essence. TMobile does not have a distinct 2G signal, at least not that I am aware of. It goes G (no data), E (Edge 2.75G), 3G, and H.
So by choosing 2G only, you eliminate even E...therefore no Data.

I'm on AT&T with a Telstra phone that has 850Mhz data.
If 2.75G is Edge and HAS data, how do I select it from the *#*#4636 or from some other menu?
On Windows Mobile 6.5, when I select GSM only I still get EDGE for data. So I can have a reliable voice call and when I'm not talking I can have Edge data.

[Q] Phone switch too late between WCDMA and GSM mode?

My SG2 is set up in network mode with GSM/WCDMA(Auto mode).
When I’m home the signal strenght, WCDMA, is -101 dBm 7asu and the voice quality is very bad, almost unusable.
When I manually switch to GSM the signal pops up to -73 and 15 asu and I can talk with a sound quality as it should be.
To me it seems that the phone doesn’t switch to GSM, or too late, when the WCDMA signal is bad.
I have tried quite a few different modems for the SG2 but I can’t see any difference between the versions. Maybe it’s the network provider that manage when to switch?
If would be great if someone could give me some info. on how the switching between WCDMA and GSM works, and the thresholds.
GSM auto (PRL) will favour GSM over 3G.
I am not sure if it will work with your network, but you can only try...........
There are a few apps around that will do it, or you can just use the following:
1. Phone dialer *#*#4636#*#*
2. Phone info
3. Set preferred network type to : GSM auto (PRL)
Edit: I am not sure if it will revert after a reboot.
This post was rather useful info, although different phone and network, principle is the same:

[Q] Force 3g on sprint

I am running Android 2.3.4 on Sprint's network. I see full signal strength. I am streaming some music online on a straight road (which per Sprint's coverage has full 3g support). However, at some points, the data switches from EVDO to 1xRTT.
Is there any way to force the phone to always connect to 3g instead of edge? I am local most of the time, so I will prefer the same.
Currently, after opening the debug menu (*#*#4636#*#*) The phone is currently on CDMA auto (PRL). Is that the best one?

how to set network mode for only hSPA on GPE

I have a one converted to GPE and where I live I get great LTE coverage. However at work its weak and my one is constantly switching between LTE and hspa.
How would I set my phone to only connect to hspa while at work to avoid the constant switching? In setting under network mode there is only options for LTE 3g and 2g.
Does 3g include hspa and if not I've read about a code to enter from dialpad that allows u to set netowkr. I need a method that will allow me to easily switch it depending on where I am.
If anyone knows how to do this any help would be great.

No data connectivity at all when 4G enabled on tmo US, works with 3G though

Hi All,
I just got the international Z5c, model E5823, which supports both tmo us LTE bands in my area (bands 1 and 12). When I have preferred network type set to 3G, I get more bars and have data connectivity. When I switch it to 4G, the bars go down to 1 or 2, and I get no data.
I did a logcat while switching from 3G to 4G and noticed that while switching, the icon switches between H+ and H, then eventually drops out. I'm still trying to see if there is anything useful in the logcat, but the one thing I noticed that seemed interesting was
Code:
D/StatusBar.NetworkController( 2598): updateIconSet, voice network type is: 13/LTE, data network type is: 13/LTE
To me, this looks like I might be seeing issues with some failed attempt to use voice over lte (as this phone supports it).
Regardless, does anyone know how I can disable voice over LTE? There was an option in the phone menu on the Z3 supposedly that would let you toggle, but I don't see it anywhere on this.
I'm going to be cross posting this in the sony forums as well, so if I hear back I'll post here.
Fixed it. I turned it onto 3g and selected "Internet settings" from the networking menu, which seems to have downloaded some configuration stuff from my carrier. After switching back to 4g I have fully working data.
