No you will not lose ur data if you are encrypted as PE is by default. It needs PE Recovery tho.
If you used DFE to stay decrypted and in TWRP then you must NOT use OTA and manually update the ROM everytime along with DFE zip so you will not face bootloops.
If you have any other question let me know.

If you still have TWRP try to reboot to recovery. If you see random names on folders and files then you are encrypted.
Or simply go to setting in Security and somewhere says if your device is encrypted or not.
TWRP can't decrypt A12 encrypted ROMs yet, thats why u either need to decrypt if u want to stay with TWRP and manually update the ROM always along with DFE -and never use OTA- or use the Recovery that each ROM provides (if they are encrypted by default) which can handle OTA but you lose many abilities that TWRP have.
If you are stable user of a certain ROM, I recommend you to stay encrypted and use the recovery they provide to use OTA updates.
If you change ROMs like your shirts and trying them out, then you maybe need to consider to stay decrypted and use DFE always and never use OTA.

ah okay, TWRP doesn't show me in the settings if i am encrypted or not but when i start TWRP, i have to type in my password and it says among other things "data successfully decrypted". And if i skip the password then all files are randomly named. So i guess i am encrypted.
I am a stable PE user but i am a bit confused now. If i make the OTA update what TWRP abilities am i losing?
edit: i updated now, TWRP doesn't seem different but i lost root. Reinstalling Magisk doesn't work for some reason.

You can check if you are encrypted or not at security section in Settings inside the ROM.
If you replace TWRP with PE recovery for example you miss some settings that TWRP had, but that's all. You don't need these if you are stable and casual user of PE.

Cannot decrypt encrypted partition when using TWRP or CWM

I unlocked and rooted my AT&T HTC One with the stock AT&T 4.3 image, installed TWRP 2.6.3.3 and rebooted into recovery. Due to restrictions from my company, I am required to have the partition encrypted. When I boot into TWRP, I enter the same password I use to decrypt the phone when I boot it from off. However, TWRP fails to accept the password and will not let me access the file system.
I have also tried using flashing the recovery to CWM 6.0.4.3 and using that only to have the same issue.
Ideally, I would like to be able to flash patches to remove both the AT&T bloatware and the 'Dial 611' check for tethering.
I have tried a few proposed solutions from XDA to the issue but still cannot get around it. If any has had success in getting around it, can you please post steps of what you did here for the sake of clarity?
Thank you!

I have the same issues. Did you find a solution?
I did not. I eventually wound up doing a reset of all data the phone, applied the ROM image I wanted and added things back.
i only found this one: https://github.com/TeamWin/Team-Win-Recovery-Project/issues/247
and then i changed the Password with cryptfs.
But it doesn't work for me......
I have the same issue here... =\

I was just searching for the same issue, and I stumbled upon that thread as well. Except there's now an additional post from mid-February with more details:
https://github.com/TeamWin/Team-Win-Recovery-Project/issues/247#issuecomment-34895111
Looks like HTC doesn't use the same encryption scheme as stock Android, but rather uses some specific HTC algorithm, so TWRP doesn't support it because it would be too much work to do so. Dissapointing, but also understandable. I've only just encrypted my device (in order to be able to check my Exchange email for work), and I didn't think about the TWRP no longer being able to access my data partition or the internal sdcard... Reading through some of the more recent comments, though, it's still possible future releases of TWRP (2.7+) may resolve the issue, though I just tried the most recent release (2.7.0.0) with no luck.
I have the same issue. I tried the most recent TWRP as of this writing, 2.7.1.1, and it still doesn't decrypt on my HTC One.
I've had this issue on mine as well. Simply decrypt storage within settings. Reboot in TWRP, flash patch, re-encrypt. Pain in the a$$ but it works for me.

Go into settings and disable encryption within the main android OS. Reboot into recovery. Flash whatever you need. Reboot back into OS. Re enable encryption. Pain but it worked.

Can't use the february update, because is reading old keys

Hi, I'm having trouble with the latest update for my tablet. I'm running 6.0.1 with January update, on top of that I installed nethunter, and everything is fine. When I tried to update (changing recovery to stock or with the zip in twrp). I'm assuming the easiest way to resolve is install the whole image, and reinstall everything. But what I'm trying to do is to actually understand where this keys are stored? And why is my tablet using old keys? I used some Google fu and I understand that the problem is the keys to check signed apps it's not correct, but, I don't know where they are stored or how could I get the proper ones. Thanks in advance.
Nethunter I believe modifies the kernel (a.k.a boot.img) so you need to replace that as well.
OTA's will only work on stock devices. Even with systemless root if you have modified the system, OTA's will fail.
Factory Images can be flashed without wiping data/apps.

Thanks, I didn't know that the factory image flash will not wipe my data, so I will try to do it that way (currently on it). :good:
On the other hand, besides been able to update my tablet, what I was trying to undestand is where the keys where stored, to see if I was able to change it, mostly because I was surprised by the old key that was supossed to be on it.

Be careful how you flash the factory images, google it for instructions on flashing without wiping.
Did you use the same stock recovery image as what is on your device, TWRP can not sideload stock OTA's, so if your getting the KEYS error from that. That maybe the reason.

H850 rooted - OTA upgrade can't decrypt? (noob here)

I bought an LG G5 H850 3 months ago, and following the tutorial of this forum I unlocked, installed TWR and rooted the device without problems... I kept the TWR boot after this.
Note: I configured my phone to have a pattern code when boot in security options
Yesterday I received the OTA (I think it is called that) Android Update to Nouget from the inbuild update service...
I didn't know if I could install it or not in my rooted phone, but I tried...
I download the 1.6GB update, and try to install it. But instead of upgrading it booted to the TWR and asked for a pattern. I tried mine, but it said it "couldn't decrypt the data" so I think it is not THAT pattern.
After that I just cancel, and ask me to enable or not write access. Whatever option I choose, it just return me to TWR main menu, where I can just reboot and return to my 6.x Android... (not upgraded)
I tried also disabling the pattern or chaging to password unlock, but it only changed the pattern question in the TWR to a password question (again, no luck bypssing it with my new password)
As you can guess, I have no much idea about Android and TWR... But I think I must be something terribly wrong here... I don't remember having encrypt the data or decrypting it before.
Is it possible to upgrade to Nouget with the OTA upgrade in a rooted H850 with TWR? If not, is there any way to upgrade to the new Android version without wiping my data? (and if possible without losing root?)
Android is encrypted by default since Marshmallow or even Lollipop. You can turn off the encryption by wiping the data in TWRP (note: it will erase all the data from your internal storage, essentially making it a factory reset). If you want to just update to Nougat use LG UP to flash the KDZ (note: use upgrade mode). Relevant guides are available on the forum.
Sidenote: check your spelling. :V It's TWRP and Nougat, not TWR and Nouget.

Upgrade mode doesn't. Note that there's always a chance that something will go wrong, so I'd recommend a backup.

Thanks!. I know, I always do a backup.
Last question, do I lose TWRP or root with the LG UP? If so, is there a method for rooting it again with Nougat?

You'll most likely lose both. You can install recovery and root normally after upgrading.

I don't want to install a rom i want to keep miui
At the beginning of the instructions there is a short description how to root.
So, I'm Kinda Confused "If you want to root then copy the stock boot from the latest stock rom into internal and use magisk to patch it, then flash the patched boot in bootloader (fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img)"
So i take the miui boot and flash it after i installed this rom and restore a backup without restoring the boot.img ?
and we don't get updates foing that (we don't get updates when we unlock bootloader but why ? ) I Guess we just gotta accept the L here

With unlocked bootloader and root you will still get OTA Updates with Miui, you just need to root again after installing the update.

You don't have to install custom ROM to get root. If you are currently on MIUI 11.0.10, you download that exact ROM, unpack it and copy boot.img to your phone. Then you install Magisk manager and use it to patch boot.img. You will get a patched boot.img which you flash in fastboot.
Ok, Is there a way to backup 'cause it says "Unlock will erase user data"
EDIT: OK I found a way to backup using MIAssistant
EDIT 2: MIAssistant is outdated any way to backup ?
I don't know. I didn't have anything important to backup.

Ok I found that you can local backup from settings but what I'm worried is losing my efs partition hope it goes right I have joyuse (9 pro)
I have 9s and all went fine.
However, I installed the custom ROM from that thread and root as well.
Now, I have to wait 168 hours (one week) to unlock
That's normal but annoying.
Yea BUT *sniff* BUT *sniff* *sniff* WHY
(ded meme)
EDIT:. BTW what does oem unlocking in developer setting mean ?
And thanks a lot man I couldn't have done this without you.
Enable it to be on the safe side when you apply for unlocking even though I don't think it's necessary for official Xiaomi unlocking. I think it's for unofficial unlocking 'oem-unlock go' which I don't think works.
Is there Twrp For joyuse (9 pro ?) i searched the fornm and i couldn't find it.
The Only One i could find was https://forum.xda-developers.com/re...nt/recovery-unofficial-pbrp-recovery-t4137753
And is this what you exactly mean ? https://forum.xda-developers.com/re.../how-to-unlock-root-redmi-9-9s-9-pro-t4108913

Just transfer the files you want to backup from your phone to PC and later copy back. Apps, SMS, call log, wifi passwords etc. are backed up to your Google account (if you have enabled backup/restore), you can backup some extra stuff in MiCloud too (I don't use it, don't wanna give em my data lol, it's enough that google has it).
FYI local backup will get wiped after unlocking.
I'd recommend you stay away from TWRP because there is no official version and it's unstable. I've read reports of people bricking their devices and losing widevine L1 after installing it. Just use Xiaomi's recovery and fastboot because they're enough for both rooting and installing custom ROMs.

Alright I've received the email to unlock the bootloader now I have some questions before using it..

Alright, I've received the email as the title implies but here are the questions I have before I proceed into the whole process
Is there a way to backup the stock image without TWRP? if so how do you get the stock image backed up if it's impossible how to back up the stock bootlover/recovery before installing TWRP if I were to get rid of TWRP one day?
also is it possible to just root the system without flashing anything to avoid data loss? this would be the preferred option actually, thanks! (Using the be2028 t-mobile version, if there's a premade backup that'll be cool too.)

I am just getting back to messing around with phones after about 5 years. So many things have changed and I am trying to get answers here as well.
I used TWRP and Magisk to root my phone. Installing TWRP will not wipe your data as it is flashed to a different partition but to install TWRP you have to unlock the bootloader and that will wipe your userdata. And no, I don't believe there is any possibility of rooting without unlocking the bootloader. If you decide you want to go back to stock, there are stock roms available and you can re-lock the bootloader on the N10 so you should be able to set it back to just like it was when you first bought it. I say should because I have never done it, just read that it can be done when I unlocked and flashed mine.
I wish I could be of more help but so many things have changed in the years since I've been away from doing this stuff I feel like a total noob again.

No I do not believe there's a way to gain root without flashing anything. There's no need to backup anything you can always use the MSM download tool to restore your device. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...l-to-restore-your-device-to-oxygenos.4204445/ You should be able to find most of the stock imgs on here already if you'd really need to flash back. I'm no expert either, just my experience with this phone in particular has been pretty straightforward. I never backed up anything lol.
Twrp is iffy i made a backup I'll never use, check out the post about flashing international rom to tmo and metro devices, that's my backup. Also you can run 11.0.3/2 firmware and boot 11 gsi's the post about lir rom has the info. Flash the product_gsi.img referenced there, I have never deleted my product partition and I only leave oos ten installed long enough to take ota's. There are more roms in the source forge page referenced with lir rom post. Flash magisk via recovery, either side load or twrp, pay attention that it flashes partition sda14(super image) or wifi breaks.
